Pause before you activate the camera. Read the kiosk’s consent notice and confirm whether it uses a live feed or stores a still image, derives facial geometry or other measurements, uploads data, shares it with a named provider, and states a retention and deletion period. If the explanation or requested data is unacceptable, decline and ask staff whether the product can be viewed or compared without a camera. Such an alternative may not exist, but asking is the only way to find out.
What a virtual try-on kiosk may actually do
“Virtual try-on” is a description of an experience, not a single technology. A kiosk might display an overlay on a live camera feed, take a still photograph, estimate measurements from an image, or send the image to a service provider for processing. Some systems may keep the original image; others may retain only event records or derived measurements. The kiosk’s appearance does not tell you which workflow is operating.
The privacy notice at that specific location is therefore more useful than a general promise that the system is “interactive” or “AI-powered.” Look for separate answers to these questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Does the camera provide a temporary live view, or does the kiosk save a still image?
- Is processing done on the kiosk, or is an image uploaded to a remote server?
- Does the service calculate face geometry, body dimensions, or another biometric measurement?
- Why is the information collected: only to show the try-on, or also to improve a product, train a system, measure advertising, or support another service?
- Who operates the equipment and who can access the image or derived data?
- How long is each category retained, and how can you request deletion?
A live preview is not automatically anonymous. A system can display a feed while still transmitting frames for analysis. Conversely, a saved photograph is not the only data that may remain after you leave: measurements, facial templates, device identifiers, timestamps, or a provider’s copy can have separate retention rules.

A privacy-first procedure at the kiosk
1. Stop at the consent screen
Do not point your face at the camera until you have read the notice or asked for it to be displayed. If the screen offers “accept,” “continue,” or a similarly broad button, look for a link to the full notice and any separate controls for optional uses. A hurried tap can authorize more than the try-on itself.
2. Identify the capture method
Find a plain statement about whether the system captures a live stream, records a still, or does both. “Camera access” is not enough detail. Ask whether frames leave the kiosk during the session and whether a photograph is created automatically when you position yourself or select a product.
3. Check for measurements or biometric processing
Terms such as facial geometry, face landmarks, biometric information, body measurements, or template indicate that the service may create data from your features rather than merely display pixels. A measurement can remain useful to the operator even after the original image is deleted, so it should have its own retention and deletion explanation.

4. Match each purpose to the data requested
The notice should say what is necessary to show the selected item and what is optional. “Improve our services,” analytics, personalization, advertising, and product development are materially different purposes from a one-time preview. If a purpose is not explained, ask whether you can use the try-on without consenting to it.
5. Find the upload and sharing details
Look for the company that runs the kiosk, the technology provider, and any other named recipient. Ask whether the image is sent outside the store, which country or region hosts it, and whether contractors or cloud providers can access it. If the notice names only a general category such as “trusted partners,” ask staff for the provider’s identity and role.
6. Read retention and deletion terms carefully
Retention should be stated for the raw image, derived measurements, logs, and any account record separately when they are treated differently. “Deleted after the session” may refer only to the kiosk’s local copy. Ask how to request deletion from a provider and whether deletion also covers derived biometric information and backups.

7. Test whether declining is possible
You can refuse when the collection or use does not fit your privacy preferences. Ask staff whether a mirror, product display, printed comparison, or another image-free method is available. Do not assume the store must provide one; availability depends on the retailer and location. If staff cannot explain the data flow or the available choices, leave the camera inactive.
Questions to ask staff when the notice is vague
Use short, specific questions rather than asking whether the kiosk is “safe.” A useful answer identifies the operator, the data, the purpose, and the retention period.
- “Who operates this kiosk, and which company processes the camera image?”
- “Is this only a live view, or is a still photo saved or uploaded?”
- “Do you calculate face geometry, body measurements, or another biometric identifier?”
- “What is the exact purpose beyond showing this product?”
- “How long are the image, measurements, and session records kept?”
- “Who receives them, and are they used by any other service provider?”
- “How do I request deletion, including deletion of derived measurements?”
- “Can I compare the product without using the camera?”
If an employee does not know, ask for the kiosk operator’s privacy contact or a printed notice. A confident answer about the photo does not answer what happens to measurements or third-party copies; ask about each category.
How to compare two try-on options
If a store offers more than one kiosk or a kiosk plus a mobile option, compare the actual data flow rather than the visual quality of the overlay. The following framework separates questions that are often bundled together.
| Privacy dimension | Lower-exposure indication | What to verify in the notice |
|---|---|---|
| Camera handling | Temporary live processing with no saved still | Whether any frames are recorded, cached, or transmitted |
| Processing location | Processing on the kiosk or device | Whether images leave the store and which provider receives them |
| Derived data | No face geometry or biometric measurement | Whether measurements, landmarks, templates, or similar data are created |
| Retention | Short, specific period with a deletion method | Separate periods for raw images, derived data, logs, and backups |
| Third parties | No external recipient beyond the retailer | Provider names, roles, access, and onward sharing |
| Purpose | Limited to the immediate try-on | Optional improvement, analytics, advertising, or training uses |
| Choice | A usable image-free alternative | Whether declining camera use still permits product information |
“On-device” is a useful distinction, but it is not a complete answer. A kiosk could process locally and still retain a photograph or send usage logs. Similarly, a short image-retention period does not establish that derived measurements disappear at the same time.

A 2024 analysis of websites and Android apps
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s project page summarizes a 2024 Concordia University analysis of 138 virtual try-on websites and 28 Android apps. In that sample, 65% of websites and 18% of Android apps transmitted user images to servers. The analysis also reported facial-geometry extraction on 37% of the sampled websites, 1,446 tracking scripts and 931 cookies across the analyzed websites, and non-compliance with stated privacy policies for 11% of websites and 25% of virtual try-on providers.

Those figures describe the sampled websites and apps, not all virtual try-on services and not the prevalence of practices in physical retail kiosks. They are a reason to inspect a particular notice, not a measurement of what the kiosk in front of you does.
The 2020 Canadian mall-kiosk investigation
Canadian federal, Alberta, and British Columbia privacy commissioners investigated Cadillac Fairview mall-directory kiosks after inconspicuous cameras collected images. Their 2020 release said images from about 5 million shoppers at 12 malls had been collected; it also reported that the images were deleted while biometric information derived from them was stored in a centralized third-party database. British Columbia Commissioner Michael McEvoy said: “Pictures of individuals were taken and analyzed in a manner that required notice and consent.”
This was a historical investigation of a particular mall-directory deployment and its legal context. It is not evidence that current try-on kiosks use the same system. Its practical lesson is narrower and important: deleting a photograph does not by itself prove that derived biometric information or a provider’s copy has been deleted.
What one current retailer notice illustrates
Walmart’s current privacy notice gives a concrete example of why the product category is too broad for a universal answer. For its eyeglass virtual try-on, Walmart says it collects biometric information and deletes it within 48 hours; it also says the information is not sold or shared. The same notice describes apparel and makeup workflows differently: apparel information may be used to improve the service, while makeup information may be shared with Perfect Corp.
These statements apply to Walmart’s named services and can change. They should not be treated as a rule for other retailers, other products, or a physical kiosk whose operator has not been identified.
Why third-party processing changes the decision
A retailer may own the screen while another company supplies the camera software, cloud infrastructure, measurement engine, or analytics. Each handoff can create a separate access path and retention policy. Ask whether the provider acts only on the retailer’s instructions or can use data for its own improvement, security, or product development.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2023 policy announcement on biometric information identifies unexpected collection or use, failure to assess foreseeable harms, and weak oversight of vendors and other third parties as risk factors. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “Today’s policy statement makes clear that companies must comply with the law regardless of the technology they are using.” That statement describes U.S. enforcement policy, not a guarantee of a particular outcome for every kiosk or jurisdiction.

What consent and deletion guidance says
An FTC staff report’s 2012 virtual-eyeglass example recommended telling consumers at collection why images are stored, how long they are stored, who has access, and what deletion rights they have. It also recommended express consent before a materially different use. This is staff guidance from that report, not a statement that every jurisdiction currently imposes identical requirements.
Apply that logic to the kiosk’s actual notice. Consent to create a temporary overlay is not necessarily consent to retain an image for analytics or to send it to a new provider. If the screen combines all purposes into one mandatory button, ask whether an optional setting or a non-camera route exists. If neither is available and the explanation is inadequate, do not proceed.

Record the operator and the notice
Before leaving, note the retailer, kiosk location, date, product category, and the operator named on the notice. If the screen provides a privacy URL or request form, save it. This information matters if you later need to identify the correct company rather than contacting a store employee who cannot access provider records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSubmit a precise deletion request
Ask for deletion of the original image, facial geometry or other biometric measurements, session logs linked to you, and copies held by service providers. Include the date, kiosk location, approximate time, and any session or receipt number. Do not send extra identity documents unless the operator explains why they are necessary and how they will be protected.

Check the response for partial deletion
A response that says “your photo was deleted” may not address derived data, backups, security logs, or a provider’s independent copy. Ask which categories were deleted, which must be retained for a stated legal or security reason, and when remaining copies will expire. Keep the response with the notice you read.
If you used a linked account
Some experiences connect the kiosk to a phone number, email address, loyalty account, or QR code. Deleting the image may not delete the account activity record. Use the account’s privacy controls separately and ask whether the try-on event can be dissociated from your profile.
Common assumptions that lead to over-sharing
“It is only a mirror, so nothing is saved.”
A mirror-like display can still upload frames or create measurements. Verify the workflow instead of inferring it from the interface.
“The camera was on for only a few seconds.”
Short exposure limits the session duration, not necessarily the retention period. A single captured frame or derived template can persist after the preview ends.
“The notice says images are deleted.”
Check whether that promise covers biometric information, measurements, logs, backups, and third-party systems. The historical Canadian case demonstrates why the categories need to be separated.
“A large retailer must use the same system everywhere.”
Retailers can use different providers, products, and notices. Walmart’s eyeglass, apparel, and makeup descriptions differ within one company, so the product and location still matter.
“The app’s privacy policy explains the kiosk.”
Website and Android-app findings cannot establish what an unnamed physical kiosk currently does. Use the notice displayed on that equipment or supplied by its identified operator.

Use the kiosk only when you can answer four questions to your own satisfaction:
- What exactly is captured or derived?
- Why is each item needed?
- Who receives it and how long does each recipient keep it?
- What can you do if you change your mind, including deletion of derived data?
If any answer is missing, ask staff for clarification and for an image-free way to compare the product. If the explanation remains vague or the requested collection is more than you accept, declining is a reasonable privacy choice. The convenience of a virtual overlay is optional; your image and biometric information are not required to be surrendered merely because a kiosk is available.
