Keep your regular SIM enabled, set it as the line for calls and texts, and select the travel eSIM for cellular data. This works when your phone supports the two lines and is eligible for the travel plan. It does not make calls, SMS, or roaming on your regular number free: check your home carrier’s charges and terms before you leave.
Before you set up the travel eSIM
Confirm your phone supports both lines
Check that your exact phone model supports eSIM and dual-SIM operation for the combination you plan to use. If the home line and travel eSIM are from different carriers, the phone generally needs to be unlocked. Apple says Dual SIM with eSIM is available on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later; using two carriers requires an unlocked iPhone unless both plans are with the same carrier. Pixel support varies by model and carrier. Google documents one physical SIM plus eSIM on Pixel 3a and later, while simultaneous use of two eSIMs is limited to supported models and carriers. Check Google’s instructions for dual SIM on Pixel for your device and configuration.

Before installing the travel plan, confirm that it covers your destination, and check its data allowance, validity period, hotspot or tethering rules, and whether it includes voice or SMS. A data-only plan can provide internet while your home line remains available for calls and texts, but the home line must still register abroad and its service depends on your carrier and plan. Provider setup instructions apply to that provider’s service, not necessarily to every eSIM.

Ask your home carrier about charges and conditions for incoming and outgoing calls, incoming and outgoing SMS, data roaming, and any travel pass that could activate. Apple cautions that additional charges may apply. Do not assume that receiving a call or a bank verification code is free or guaranteed. If you rely on verification texts, arrange an alternative authentication method before travelling.
Assign calls, texts, and data to the right lines
On iPhone
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Mobile Data; the label can vary by region or software version.
- Keep your regular plan turned on.
- In the cellular-data settings, select the travel eSIM as the line for cellular data.
- Set your regular number as the Default Voice Line if you want it to be the default for calls.
- Choose which line to use for iMessage and FaceTime, if needed.
Apple states that “Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.” The travel eSIM can therefore be the selected data line while the regular number remains enabled for calls and texts.

On Google Pixel
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
- Under the primary SIM preferences, select the home SIM for Calls and Texts.
- Select the travel eSIM for Mobile data.
Google notes that available menus depend on Android version and phone model, and that only one SIM can be the default for data. Other Android manufacturers use different settings paths, so consult your phone maker’s instructions and verify each line’s assignment rather than assuming the Pixel menu applies.

Dual-SIM settings can affect data routing and whether a call on the second line comes through while you are using the first. The behavior differs by phone, carrier, and configuration.

iPhone: cellular data switching
Allow Cellular Data Switching lets an iPhone use data from either plan depending on coverage and availability. If your goal is to keep data on the travel eSIM, leave switching off unless a specific call or carrier requirement means you need it. Apple says receiving a call on the line that is not designated for cellular data while you are on a call requires data switching to be enabled. The feature’s behavior also depends on carrier support and can change which line carries data.
Pixel: data during calls and the second SIM
Google says that during a call, data may use the SIM making the call rather than the SIM normally selected for data; Pixel phones provide a data-during-calls setting. Google also documents limits on receiving a call on the other SIM while a call is active. Exact behavior depends on the Pixel model and configuration, so check the settings and Google’s dual-SIM guidance.

Wi-Fi Calling is not a guaranteed workaround for second-line calls over the travel eSIM’s data. Apple and Google both make some second-line calling behavior conditional on carrier support. Confirm with your carrier whether Wi-Fi Calling is supported for your line and situation.
Keep roaming settings and charges straight
Data roaming is a per-line setting. Google describes roaming as allowing data over another carrier’s network outside the area covered by your carrier. A data-roaming toggle does not determine by itself whether calls or SMS will cost extra; those charges depend on your home carrier, account, plan, and destination. The travel eSIM’s data allowance and the home number’s voice and text service are separate. Leave the home line enabled if you want it available for calls and texts, but verify its roaming terms with the carrier.
