A Surface Pro changes between tablet and laptop-style use through its physical setup: close the kickstand and use the touchscreen, or open the kickstand and attach a compatible detachable keyboard. There is no single universal Windows switch that creates both modes. The keyboard model must match your Surface Pro generation, and some newer keyboards have capabilities that older Type Covers do not.

What you need for each mode

The Surface Pro itself is enough for tablet use. You can tap, scroll, write with your finger and run touch-friendly apps without buying an accessory. Laptop-style work requires a compatible keyboard, because the keyboard provides the physical typing surface while the kickstand supports the display.

  • Tablet setup: Surface Pro with the kickstand closed. A Type Cover may remain attached, but fold it behind the display.
  • Laptop-style setup: Surface Pro with the kickstand open and a compatible keyboard magnetically attached to the lower edge.
  • Writing and drawing: An optional compatible Surface Pen.
  • Desk pointing: An optional mouse. It is not required for either mode.

Do not buy a keyboard based only on the words “Surface Pro keyboard.” Compatibility changes by generation, and Microsoft lists different keyboard families for different devices.

How to use a Surface Pro as a laptop

1. Place the Surface Pro on a stable surface

Set the device upright with the rear kickstand facing away from you. The kickstand is built into the computer, so no separate stand is needed.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

2. Open the kickstand

Pull the kickstand out from the rear of the Surface Pro and adjust it until the display is comfortable for your desk or table. The angle that works on a desk may not be stable or comfortable on every lap, so adjust it for your posture and surface.

3. Attach the keyboard

Align the keyboard connector with the lower edge of the Surface Pro. The magnetic connection should pull the keyboard into place. A Type Cover or compatible Surface keyboard is removable, so you can detach it when you want a lighter tablet setup.

4. Start typing

Windows should use the physical keyboard as soon as it is connected. If it does not, detach and reattach it, check that the connector is clean, and confirm that the keyboard is designed for your exact Surface Pro model.

On Surface Pro 6, Microsoft describes this arrangement as opening the built-in kickstand and adding a removable Surface Pro Signature Type Cover to create “Laptop Mode.” That description is specific to Surface Pro 6; newer generations use different keyboard compatibility lists.

How to use a Surface Pro as a tablet

1. Close the kickstand

Fold the kickstand flat against the back of the device. You can then hold the Surface Pro like a slate or lay it on a table for touch interaction.

2. Detach the keyboard or fold it behind the screen

The cleanest tablet setup is to detach the keyboard. If you want to leave a Type Cover attached, fold it behind the display. Microsoft’s instruction is to “Fold the Type Cover back behind the screen to use your Surface as a tablet.”

When the cover is folded behind the screen, Windows does not register key presses from it. This prevents your hands or the rear-facing cover from entering unwanted text while you hold the device.

3. Use touch controls

Tap icons and buttons, swipe through pages, scroll with a finger, and use touch gestures supported by the app. The touchscreen remains usable whether a keyboard is attached, detached, or folded behind the display.

4. Bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed

Tap a text-entry area, such as a search box, address field, message field, or document. Windows should display the touch keyboard. If it does not appear, select the keyboard icon in the taskbar when available, or open the on-screen keyboard from Windows settings. The exact location can vary by Windows version and taskbar configuration.

Choosing a comfortable kickstand position

The kickstand is more than an on/off support. Microsoft documents several positions for Surface Pro 6, including a lower “Studio Mode” angle intended for writing and drawing. A lower angle can make pen work feel more natural on a table, while a more upright angle is usually easier for reading or typing.

  • Upright position: useful for viewing the screen and typing with the keyboard on a desk.
  • Lower Studio Mode angle: suited to handwriting, sketching, and other pen-based work on a table.
  • Kickstand closed: best when holding the device as a tablet or carrying it without a support footprint.

There is no single ideal angle for every desk, lap, chair, or user. If the device wobbles, change the support surface or move to a desk rather than forcing an unstable angle.

Switching between tablet and laptop use during the day

  1. For typing: open the kickstand, attach the compatible keyboard, and place the Surface Pro on a stable surface.
  2. For reading or touch work: save your work, detach the keyboard or fold it behind the screen, and close the kickstand.
  3. For handwriting: use a lower kickstand angle on a table and write with a compatible Surface Pen if your model supports one.
  4. For another typing session: return the kickstand to a stable angle and reattach the keyboard. If you used a detachable keyboard away from the device, reconnect it before typing.

This physical transition is the practical meaning of switching “from tablet to laptop mode.” It does not require a universal Windows tablet-mode toggle.

Choosing between attached, folded, and detached keyboards

There are three practical keyboard arrangements, and each solves a different problem. An attached keyboard is best when you are ready to type and want the most laptop-like setup: the connector is engaged, the kickstand supports the screen, and the keyboard stays aligned with the device. A folded Type Cover is convenient when you are moving between short touch sessions and occasional typing because you can keep one accessory attached. Its keys are intentionally disabled behind the screen, so you must unfold it before physical typing.

A detached keyboard is a separate case. Microsoft specifically documents detached operation for the 13-inch Flex Keyboard, with Windows 11 required for that mode. The keyboard recharges when it is attached to the Surface Pro again. Do not infer that a regular Type Cover or another Surface keyboard can be used wirelessly simply because it can be removed from the device.

When comparing products, check four things in order: the exact Surface Pro generation listed as compatible, whether the keyboard is attached-only or supports detached use, whether pen storage or charging matters to your routine, and whether you want a keyboard at all. A person who mainly reads and annotates may need only touch and an optional pen; a person writing long documents needs a compatible physical keyboard; a desk user may also prefer a mouse.

Confirming your model before buying accessories

Find the Surface Pro model and edition in Windows or on the device before ordering. Record the generation rather than relying on a seller’s broad “Surface Pro” label. This matters because Microsoft’s lists separate Surface Pro 7 and earlier Type Cover support from the newer 13-inch Keyboard family, and the Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, and later models are not covered by the legacy Type Cover list.

Check the exact edition as well as the number. Microsoft’s 13-inch Keyboard list includes Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 9, Surface Pro 10 for Business, Surface Pro 11th Edition, and Surface Pro X. The 13-inch Flex Keyboard is listed for selected Surface Pro 8th Edition-and-later models, not every device with a similar screen description. Compatibility and availability can change as new editions appear, so recheck Microsoft’s current table immediately before purchase.

Keyboard compatibility by Surface Pro generation

Keyboard fit is the most important purchase decision. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance distinguishes legacy Type Covers, newer 13-inch keyboards, and the 13-inch Flex Keyboard. Check the model name and edition printed in Windows or on the device before ordering.

Keyboard family Compatibility stated by Microsoft Attachment and use What to check
Surface Type Cover Designed for Surface Pro 7+ and earlier devices; not compatible with Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, and later models. Magnetic attachment to the lower edge; can be folded behind the screen for tablet use. Confirm that your device is in the supported Surface Pro 7-or-earlier range.
13-inch Keyboard Listed for Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 9, Surface Pro 10 for Business, Surface Pro 11th Edition, and Surface Pro X. Magnetic attachment; intended for the listed newer devices. Match the exact edition, especially if you have a business model.
13-inch Flex Keyboard Listed for selected Surface Pro 8th Edition-and-later models. Can be used attached or detached. Detached use requires Windows 11; the keyboard recharges when reattached. Verify that both your Surface model and Windows installation meet the requirements.

These lists are not interchangeable. A keyboard that fits one generation may not connect to another, and detached operation is a Flex Keyboard feature rather than a universal property of Surface keyboards. Microsoft’s compatibility pages can change as new editions are released, so verify the current model list immediately before purchase.

Using a keyboard while it is folded behind the display

Folding a Type Cover behind the screen is useful when you want to carry one accessory without removing it. In that position, the cover’s keys are disabled. That is expected behavior, not a keyboard failure.

To enter text, tap the field where you want to type and use the touch keyboard. To return to physical typing, unfold the cover into its normal typing position and place the Surface Pro on its kickstand. If the physical keys still do not work, disconnect and reconnect the cover and inspect the magnetic connector for debris.

Using a detachable Flex Keyboard away from the Surface Pro

The 13-inch Flex Keyboard has a special detached-use capability. Microsoft states that detached operation requires Windows 11, and that the keyboard recharges when it is attached to the Surface Pro again.

Do not assume that a detached Type Cover or another Surface keyboard works the same way. Unless Microsoft lists detached operation for your specific keyboard, treat it as an attached accessory and keep it connected to the device while typing.

Adding a pen for notes and drawing

A Surface Pen is optional. You can use the Surface Pro as a tablet with touch alone, but a compatible pen can make handwriting, annotation, and drawing more precise. Microsoft identifies pen use as a tablet-oriented activity and also documents the lower Studio Mode angle for writing and drawing.

Pen support and features vary by Surface Pro generation. Confirm compatibility for the exact device before buying a pen; do not assume that a pen made for one Surface family works with every Surface Pro.

Adding a mouse for desk work

A mouse is also optional. Microsoft lists a Surface Arc Mouse among optional accessories for Surface Pro 6. A mouse can be convenient when the device stays on a desk or when you work in desktop applications with small controls, but it does not affect the tablet-to-laptop transition. Touch, keyboard, and trackpad input remain independent choices.

Practical choices for common tasks

  • Web reading or video: close the kickstand and detach or fold the keyboard so you can hold the screen without accidental key presses.
  • Email and short replies: keep the cover attached and folded behind the display until you need to type, then unfold it and open the kickstand.
  • Long documents: open the kickstand fully enough for a stable desk position and use the compatible physical keyboard.
  • Handwritten notes: close or lower the kickstand on a firm table and use a compatible Surface Pen if desired.
  • Desk-based precision work: add an optional mouse only if touch or the keyboard’s pointing surface is less convenient for your application.

These are workflow choices, not separate operating-system modes. The same Windows installation and apps remain available; the change is how the display is supported and how you provide input.

Troubleshooting the transition

The keyboard is not recognized

  • Detach and reattach it so the magnetic connector seats correctly.
  • Check the connector for dust or foreign material and gently clean it with the device powered down.
  • Confirm the keyboard’s compatibility list for your exact Surface Pro generation.
  • Restart Windows after reconnecting the keyboard if it remains unavailable.

The keyboard types while folded behind the screen

A properly folded Type Cover should not register key presses. Unfold it and reconnect it if Windows continues receiving unwanted input. If the issue persists, check for a loose connection or a Windows device-detection problem.

The touch keyboard does not appear

  • Tap directly inside a text-entry field rather than an empty area of the page.
  • Use the taskbar keyboard icon when it is shown.
  • Check Windows’ touch-keyboard settings if the icon is missing.
  • Unfold or detach the physical keyboard if you need to type immediately.

The kickstand feels unstable

Move the Surface Pro to a flat, firm surface and adjust the angle. A kickstand position that works on a desk may not hold securely on a soft lap or uneven surface. Do not use a steep angle that causes the device to slide.

A detached keyboard does not work

First determine whether it is a 13-inch Flex Keyboard. Microsoft requires Windows 11 for its detached mode. Other Surface keyboards should not be expected to provide wireless detached typing unless their documentation explicitly says so.

Battery-life expectations

Microsoft reported up to 13.5 hours of video playback for Surface Pro 6. That figure came from testing in April 2017 on a preproduction Intel Core i5 device with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, using full battery discharge during video playback. Microsoft also warns that battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because that is a dated, model-specific laboratory-style result, it should not be treated as the expected battery life of every Surface Pro generation or as a prediction for mixed work involving touch, keyboard input, wireless connections, and demanding applications.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify the exact Surface Pro model and edition in Windows before buying accessories.
  • Choose tablet use with the kickstand closed and the keyboard detached or folded behind the display.
  • Choose laptop-style use with the kickstand open and a compatible keyboard attached.
  • Tap a text field to use the on-screen keyboard when the physical cover is folded away.
  • Use a lower kickstand angle for table-based pen work when it feels stable and comfortable.
  • Confirm Windows 11 before relying on detached Flex Keyboard operation.
  • Treat a pen and mouse as optional accessories, not requirements.
  • Keep battery claims tied to the specific model and test conditions rather than applying them to all Surface Pro devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use my Surface Pro as a tablet?

Close the kickstand and use the touchscreen. Detach the Type Cover, or fold it behind the screen; folded keys are disabled. Tap a text field to open the on-screen keyboard when you need to type.

How do I turn my Surface Pro into a laptop?

Open the built-in kickstand, attach a keyboard that Microsoft lists as compatible with your exact model, and type on the physical keyboard. Surface Pro 6 documentation calls this Laptop Mode.

Can I fold my Surface keyboard behind the screen?

Yes. Microsoft instructs users to fold a Type Cover behind the screen for tablet use. Windows should not register key presses while it is folded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Surface Pro keyboard fits my model?

Check Microsoft’s current compatibility table by exact model and edition. Legacy Type Covers cover Surface Pro 7 and earlier, while newer 13-inch Keyboard and Flex Keyboard lists cover selected newer devices. Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, and later models are not compatible with the legacy Type Cover list.

Can every Surface keyboard be used detached?

No. Microsoft specifically documents detached operation for the 13-inch Flex Keyboard, and that use requires Windows 11. Do not assume a regular Type Cover supports wireless detached typing.

Do I need a Surface Pen to use tablet mode?

No. Touch input is sufficient. A compatible Surface Pen is optional for handwriting, annotation, and drawing, especially with the lower Studio Mode kickstand angle.

Do I need a mouse?

No. A mouse is optional for desk-oriented work or small desktop controls. It does not change how the Surface Pro switches between tablet and laptop-style use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my touch keyboard not appearing?

Tap directly in a text-entry field, use the taskbar keyboard icon when available, and check Windows touch-keyboard settings if the icon is missing. You can also unfold or detach the physical keyboard.

What battery life should I expect?

Do not apply one figure to every Surface Pro. Microsoft’s up-to-13.5-hour result was for Surface Pro 6 video playback in April 2017 on a specified preproduction configuration, and Microsoft notes that settings and usage significantly affect battery life.

The Bottom Line

Use the Surface Pro as a tablet by closing the kickstand and relying on touch, with the Type Cover detached or folded behind the display. Use it as a laptop-style PC by opening the kickstand and attaching a keyboard that is listed for your exact generation. A compatible pen and mouse are optional, while detached typing is a specific Flex Keyboard feature that requires Windows 11. Verify the model and compatibility table before buying any accessory.
