Yes—your Steam Deck can act as a screen and controller for a PS5 or PS4 through the independent Chiaki-NG Linux client, and it can stream an Xbox home console through the independent Greenlight client. Neither route is the official PlayStation or Xbox application for SteamOS. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps for Remote Play and 15 Mbps for a better experience, but those figures do not guarantee a particular result on a Steam Deck. PSP games are a separate question: remote-playing a PS5 or Xbox does not install or run PSP software, and this guide does not provide PSP-emulation steps without authoritative, current setup documentation.

What “remote play on Steam Deck” actually means

In this guide, remote play means a game is running on a console in your home and its video and audio are sent over the network to the Steam Deck. The Deck sends controller input back to that console. The Deck is therefore acting as a portable display and input device; it is not replacing the PS5, PS4, or Xbox hardware that runs the game.

That definition matters because several similarly named features are easy to confuse:

  • PlayStation Remote Play: Sony’s service streams PS4 and PS5 games from a console to another compatible device. Sony says a PS4 or PS5 is required to stream to another device and publishes a minimum connection recommendation of 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. See Sony’s Remote Play documentation.
  • Xbox home streaming: Greenlight is an independent client that documents Xbox home streaming on Linux and Steam Deck. It also documents access to Xbox cloud streaming, which is a different source of the game than a console in your home. See the Greenlight project.
  • Steam Remote Play: Valve’s feature streams audio and video captured on a remote computer to another connected device. It is not the PlayStation or Xbox console connection described here. Valve explains that distinction in its Steam Remote Play support documentation.

For PS5 and PS4, the SteamOS route covered here is Chiaki-NG, an open-source client. For Xbox, it is Greenlight. Both projects are independent of the console manufacturers, and their installation screens and release procedures can change, so use their current documentation rather than an old command copied from a forum.

What you need before starting

For a PS5 or PS4

  • A PS5 or PS4 that can run the game you want to play.
  • A Steam Deck running SteamOS with enough free storage for the client and any supporting files required by its current instructions.
  • A network connection between the console and the Deck. Sony’s published baseline is at least 5 Mbps; it recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience over Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are Sony service recommendations, not a Steam Deck performance guarantee.
  • The current Chiaki-NG release and setup instructions from its project repository.
  • A way to play comfortably on the Deck. Chiaki-NG’s controller documentation includes Steam Deck-specific mappings, including a PlayStation touchpad mapping.

Sony’s public Remote Play page lists supported computer platforms such as PC and Mac but does not document SteamOS as an official app platform. Installing Chiaki-NG therefore means using an independent Linux client, not installing an official Sony SteamOS application.

For an Xbox

  • An Xbox console if you want to stream games from hardware in your home, or an eligible cloud-streaming service setup if you intend to use Greenlight’s cloud option.
  • A Steam Deck and a network connection suitable for interactive streaming.
  • The current Greenlight build and its installation and sign-in instructions from the Greenlight repository.

Greenlight describes itself as an open-source client for Xbox home streaming and xCloud that runs on Linux and Steam Deck. It also states that it is not affiliated with Microsoft or Xbox. The project documentation is the authority for its current installation method, authentication flow, and supported features; no single release number or fixed installation command should be treated as permanent.

How to use a Steam Deck for PS5 or PS4 Remote Play

1. Confirm that the console is the source

Remote Play requires a PS4 or PS5 console. The game must be available on that console, and the console must be configured according to Sony’s Remote Play requirements. A Steam Deck by itself cannot turn a PlayStation game into a local SteamOS game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the network before installing anything

Use Sony’s figures as a starting check: below 5 Mbps, the connection does not meet Sony’s published minimum; 15 Mbps or more is Sony’s recommendation for a better experience. Sony also warns that quality and connectivity vary with the network environment, so a speed-test result is not a promise of smooth play. The console’s connection, the Deck’s connection, wireless interference, and other traffic can all affect the session.

If the console and Deck are on the same home network, keep both on the network path you intend to use during play and pause large downloads or video streams while testing. These are practical checks, not a claim that a particular router, Ethernet adapter, or wireless band will improve every setup.

3. Read Chiaki-NG’s current setup instructions

Open the Chiaki-NG repository and use the installation procedure and release information shown there for your SteamOS environment. The project’s release state is version-sensitive; an older guide can point to a package, filename, or menu that no longer exists. Follow the project’s documented prerequisites and update procedure exactly.

Because Chiaki-NG is not endorsed or certified by Sony, treat its documentation—not Sony’s official app support list—as the source for installing and operating the SteamOS client. Sony’s page remains the source for the Remote Play service requirements and supported console concept.

4. Register or pair the console using the project’s procedure

After installing Chiaki-NG, follow its current setup flow to identify your PS4 or PS5 and complete the registration or pairing step. The exact screens and values can change between releases, so this article deliberately does not freeze a particular code-entry sequence. Keep the console available during setup and make sure the Deck is connected to the network on which you expect to play.

If the client cannot discover the console, first verify that the console is powered on or in the power state required by Sony’s Remote Play configuration, then verify that both devices are on the intended network. Re-check every value against the live Chiaki-NG instructions instead of substituting a value from a different tutorial.

5. Configure the Deck controls

Use Chiaki-NG’s controller documentation to select or adjust the Steam Deck mapping. The documentation specifically covers Deck controls and the PlayStation touchpad, which is important for games that use touchpad gestures or clicks. Test the touchpad, shoulder buttons, sticks, triggers, and the PS-button equivalent before starting a long session.

A mapping that works for ordinary buttons can still fail a game’s touchpad input. If a title depends on that control, test it in a safe menu or save point and correct the mapping before continuing.

6. Run a short test session

  1. Start the console and launch Chiaki-NG on the Deck.
  2. Connect to the registered console through the client’s current interface.
  3. Confirm that video and audio arrive and that every required control responds.
  4. Move briefly through a game menu or low-risk area before committing to a ranked match, difficult encounter, or unsaved progress.
  5. If the test is unstable, stop and troubleshoot the network and client configuration before blaming the Deck’s display or controls.

The test tells you whether your particular network and configuration are usable. Sony’s 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures remain service guidance; they are not latency, image-quality, or frame-rate measurements for Chiaki-NG on a Steam Deck.

How to stream an Xbox to a Steam Deck

1. Decide between home-console streaming and cloud streaming

Greenlight covers two different sources:

  • Home streaming: the game runs on an Xbox console you own or control, and the Deck receives the stream over the network.
  • Cloud streaming: the game runs in a cloud service and Greenlight displays that stream on the Deck. There is no local Xbox console doing the rendering for that session.

Choose the source first because a problem with the home console cannot be fixed by changing a cloud setting, and a cloud-availability issue cannot be fixed by moving the Deck closer to your router. Greenlight’s documentation is the place to verify the current requirements for each mode.

2. Install the current Greenlight client

Open the Greenlight project page and follow its current Linux or Steam Deck installation instructions. Do not assume that a package name, Flatpak identifier, executable location, or login screen from an older guide still applies. The project documents its own release artifacts and update process.

Greenlight is independent software, not an Xbox or Microsoft application. That distinction affects where you obtain updates and where you look when a feature changes: use the project’s repository and issue guidance rather than expecting an official Xbox support page to document SteamOS-specific Greenlight behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Complete the documented sign-in and console selection flow

Use Greenlight’s current instructions to authenticate and select either home streaming or the cloud option. Keep the Xbox available and in the state required by the project’s instructions when testing home streaming. If the client shows no console, verify the Xbox’s network connection and the Deck’s network before changing unrelated settings.

For cloud streaming, verify that the account and service access required by the current Greenlight documentation are available in your region. The material cited here does not establish a universal cloud catalog, regional entitlement, or bandwidth threshold, so those details should be checked in the live project and service documentation rather than inferred from the PS Remote Play numbers.

4. Test controls and the stream

  1. Start Greenlight and connect using the mode you selected.
  2. Confirm that the picture and sound are present.
  3. Open a game menu and test sticks, triggers, bumpers, the D-pad, face buttons, and the menu or guide control.
  4. Play for several minutes while watching for input delay, dropped connection, or audio interruptions.
  5. Only then move to a session where an interruption would matter.

No comparative test establishes that Greenlight and Chiaki-NG deliver equal latency, image quality, compatibility, or setup ease. Your result depends on the client version, console or cloud route, network, and game.

Network and performance troubleshooting

The client cannot find the console

  • Confirm the console is on, reachable, and configured for its manufacturer’s remote-play feature.
  • Confirm the Deck is connected to the intended network rather than a guest or isolated network.
  • Pause heavy downloads and streaming on the same connection.
  • Re-read the client’s current pairing or discovery instructions. A menu or registration method may have changed after the guide you used was published.

The picture is present but controls do not work correctly

  • For PlayStation, open the Chiaki-NG controller guide and verify the Steam Deck profile, including touchpad input.
  • Test the controls in a menu so you can identify one missing input at a time.
  • Check whether the issue is limited to one game or affects the entire client session before changing the whole mapping.

The stream is blurry, stutters, or disconnects

  • For PlayStation, compare your connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, remembering that those figures do not guarantee a stable session.
  • Test with other network traffic paused and with both devices in their normal play locations.
  • For Xbox, do not apply Sony’s numbers as if they were Xbox requirements; the cited Greenlight material does not publish an equivalent universal threshold.
  • Record whether the failure occurs only in home streaming, only in cloud streaming, or in both. That distinction points to different causes.
  • Check the client’s current issue tracker or release notes when a problem begins immediately after an update.

Audio is missing while video works

First establish whether the issue occurs in the client’s entire session or only in one game. Then check the Deck’s output device and the client’s current audio settings as documented by the project. Avoid changing several unrelated system settings at once; doing so makes it difficult to identify the cause.

How Steam Remote Play differs from these console links

Steam Remote Play is a Valve feature for sending audio and video captured on a remote computer to another connected device, as described in Valve’s support page. It is useful when the host is a computer running a Steam game. It does not provide the PS5-to-Deck or Xbox-to-Deck connection described in this article.

Seeing “Remote Play” in the Steam client therefore does not mean that a PlayStation or Xbox has been paired. Use Chiaki-NG for the PlayStation route or Greenlight for the Xbox route, and use Steam Remote Play only when the source is a compatible remote computer.

Can a Steam Deck play PSP games?

That is a separate use case from console Remote Play. A PSP game could mean at least two different things: running a PSP emulator locally on the Deck, or streaming a game from some other system. Neither interpretation is the same as receiving a PS5 or Xbox Remote Play session.

This guide does not provide PSP installation, compatibility, or legality instructions because current authoritative setup documentation for that specific promise has not been established here. Do not treat the Chiaki-NG or Greenlight steps as PSP support, and do not assume that a title’s availability on a PlayStation console proves that its PSP version can be streamed or emulated through either client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before following a PSP tutorial, identify the intended method (local emulation or streaming), the exact game format, the SteamOS version, controller needs, and the legal source of any game files. Those questions require source-backed, current instructions separate from PS5 and Xbox Remote Play.

A safe first-session checklist

  • Identify the source: PS4/PS5 console, Xbox home console, or Xbox cloud service.
  • Install only the client that matches that source: Chiaki-NG for PlayStation or Greenlight for Xbox.
  • Use each project’s live installation and update instructions rather than a fixed command from an older article.
  • For PlayStation, verify the network against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
  • Pair or sign in using the client’s current documented flow.
  • Test video, audio, every required button, and the PlayStation touchpad when applicable.
  • Run a short, low-risk game test before starting a long or competitive session.
  • If a failure occurs, isolate whether it is discovery, authentication, controls, audio, network stability, home streaming, or cloud availability.
  • Keep the client updated from its project source and re-check documentation after SteamOS or console updates.

Bottom line

A Steam Deck is a practical remote screen for a PS5 or PS4 when you use the independent Chiaki-NG client, and it can serve the same role for Xbox through Greenlight. The PlayStation route has Sony’s published 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation; Xbox-specific thresholds are not established in the cited Greenlight material. Treat both clients as independent software whose instructions change over time, and keep Steam Remote Play separate because it is for streaming from a computer. PSP games need a different, separately documented solution, so they should not be folded into these console-streaming steps.
