To use a normal Minecraft monster spawner, secure the dungeon with torches, leave the spawner in place, clear the temporary lighting, and channel the mobs into a safe kill and collection area. In vanilla Survival, you cannot pick up a normal spawner—even with Silk Touch—so the farm must be built around the block where it generated.
Trial Spawners are a separate 1.21 feature. They appear in Trial Chambers, activate when a player approaches, create limited combat waves, and release rewards after the challenge. They are not a replacement for the renewable dungeon-spawner farms described below.
What a Minecraft spawner does
Normal monster spawners
A normal monster spawner is a dungeon block with a miniature version of its assigned mob rotating inside. While a player is close enough for the block to be active, it repeatedly attempts to spawn that mob. Each attempt still has to satisfy the relevant spawning conditions, including suitable space and the required environment. A spawner is therefore an engine for repeated spawning, not an instant source of mobs or drops.
The block is valuable because it remains a renewable source as long as it stays in the world and the player can remain nearby. Breaking it removes that source permanently. In vanilla Survival, mining it yields experience rather than the block itself.

Why the room must be redesigned
A dungeon is usually a cramped room with uneven walls, corners, and a short route to the surrounding caves. Left untouched, mobs can collect around the spawner, wander into dark pockets, or reach the player before there is a safe way to attack them. A useful farm turns that room into a controlled chamber: the mobs have one route out, the player has a protected attack position, and drops arrive at a predictable collection point.
Prepare before you enter the dungeon
Do not begin by mining the spawner. First make the room safe enough to work in. Bring:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Torches or another temporary light source for the room and nearby openings.
- A reliable weapon and enough food to recover between fights.
- Building blocks for walls, ceilings, barriers, and emergency seals.
- A way to close cave entrances so mobs cannot attack from outside the planned chamber.
- Chests or another collection system for the finished farm.
- Water buckets if you intend to use water channels, plus blocks for signs, gates, or dividers where your design requires them.
Mark the spawner immediately
Once you see the cage, place temporary blocks or distinctive markers around it. This prevents accidental mining while you clear the room and gives you a reference point when you enlarge the chamber. Keep the marker until the farm has been tested.
Light first, redesign second
Place as many torches or other light sources as possible while fighting the mobs already in the dungeon. Lighting the room pauses the normal spawning attempts while you work, giving you time to remove existing threats and inspect the walls. It is temporary construction lighting; the finished farm will need the appropriate darker conditions for its mob type.
Step-by-step: turn a dungeon spawner into a mob farm
1. Secure every opening
With the room lit, check each wall, ceiling, and floor edge. Seal cracks that lead to caves or tunnels, and build a short barrier at the entrance you will use. A farm is much easier to operate when hostile mobs can only come from the spawner chamber and not from an unlit passage behind you.
2. Clear the existing mobs
Fight or remove the mobs that spawned before you arrived. Do not start excavating while a group is still hiding in a corner. If you need to retreat, close the entrance with blocks and add more light before trying again.

3. Leave the spawner intact
Do not break, move, or attempt to collect the cage. Vanilla Survival has no Silk Touch exception for normal monster spawners. Silk Touch lets you harvest many ordinary blocks in a different form, but it does not make a dungeon spawner portable. The correct farm location is the location where the dungeon generated.
4. Open a controlled chamber
Remove or reshape the cramped dungeon walls so the room has a clear, enclosed volume around the spawner. The aim is not to make a decorative hall; it is to remove dead ends and give every spawned mob a route toward the transport channel. Keep the ceiling and side walls high enough that the assigned mob can spawn and move without getting trapped in the structure.
Work in sections. Keep the torches in place while excavating, then replace any blocks you remove so the chamber remains sealed. A single open cave can turn a predictable farm into a dangerous intersection.
5. Choose one transport route
Most practical designs use one of three routes:
- Water channels: Use flowing water to push mobs along a floor channel toward a walled corridor. Water is useful when you want the kill area at the same level as the dungeon.
- A drop: Funnel mobs to an opening and let them fall into a lower room. The drop separates the spawning chamber from the player and can soften or weaken mobs before the final attack, but the landing area must be enclosed.
- A short walled corridor: Force mobs through a narrow passage to a protected opening. This uses fewer moving parts and makes manual attacks straightforward.
Whichever option you choose, build the walls before removing the temporary lights. You want the route ready before the next spawning attempt begins.

6. Build the kill and collection point
Create a position where you can attack without standing in the spawning chamber. A solid wall, a narrow opening, or a separated lower room can keep hostile mobs away from your face while leaving their hit area accessible. Place the collection point directly beneath or beside that attack position so drops do not scatter into inaccessible corners.
Add chests or another storage arrangement where you can reach them safely. Keep the floor around the collection point closed; an accidental gap can let mobs escape or allow items to fall out of reach.

- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features torches, hay, a smoker stove, 2 eggs, 2 lots of seeds, a chicken leg, feather and an axe
7. Keep the player close enough
A normal spawner only works while a player is within its ordinary activation range. Stand at the finished attack position and verify that the spawner remains active from there. If the kill room is too far away, move it closer or create a nearby standing spot. The ideal position lets you attack and collect drops without leaving the activation area.
8. Remove temporary lighting last
Only after the chamber, transport route, kill point, and escape barriers are complete should you remove or reposition the torches. Remove them in a controlled sequence rather than all at once. Watch the first spawning cycle from the protected position and confirm that mobs follow the intended route.

9. Test the farm in short cycles
Let a small group spawn, then observe where each mob stops. If one catches on a corner, widen or straighten that section. If mobs reach the player, add another wall or move the attack opening. If items land outside the collection area, extend the floor, channel, or storage reach. Test again after every structural change.
Design choices that affect reliability
Water transport
Water makes the mob path visible and easy to adjust. Use walls on both sides so flowing water cannot spread into the rest of the dungeon. End the stream at a drop, corridor, or attack opening; otherwise mobs may swim against the flow or remain at the edge of the channel.
Drop transport
A vertical drop is compact and keeps the player away from the spawner room. Enclose both the top opening and the landing room. The landing area must leave enough space for you to attack and collect drops while preventing mobs from climbing back toward the chamber.
Manual attack versus automatic damage
The simplest farm leaves the player responsible for the final attacks. This gives direct control over when mobs die and lets you collect their drops immediately. A more elaborate design can route mobs into a separate damage area, but every additional mechanism creates another place where a mob can stop or escape. For a first dungeon farm, prioritize an enclosed route and a safe attack window over complexity.

Storage and maintenance access
Build a small maintenance doorway or inspection window before you remove the torches. You will need to see the transport route, replace damaged blocks, and clear an obstruction without entering the active chamber. Put storage within reach of the attack position so you do not have to leave the activation area whenever the chest fills.
Can you pick up a spawner with Silk Touch?
Vanilla Survival
No. A normal dungeon spawner cannot be collected in vanilla Survival, including with a Silk Touch tool. Breaking it gives experience and destroys the renewable source. If you want a spawner farm, preserve the original block and construct around it.
Creative mode
Creative uses a different workflow. A placed spawner starts empty, and you can configure it with a spawn egg. That lets you create a test setup or a custom display, but it does not change the Survival rule for dungeon spawners. Treat Creative configuration and Survival collection as separate use cases.

No mobs appear
- Check that you are close enough for the spawner to be active.
- Confirm that the temporary torches or other lights were removed from the spawning chamber when testing.
- Look for blocks, water, or a low ceiling preventing the assigned mob from spawning or moving.
- Inspect nearby spaces for mobs that have accumulated outside the intended route.
A spawner can make repeated attempts without producing a useful group when its environmental conditions are not met. Change one obstruction at a time so you can identify the cause.
Mobs stop around the spawner
Check for corners, shallow water, decorative blocks, or a route that does not lead to the channel. Enlarge the chamber or straighten the first section. If too many mobs remain near the block, spawning attempts can fail until the crowd is reduced; clear the group from the protected attack position before testing again.
Mobs escape into caves
Relight the farm temporarily, retreat, and seal every opening. Search above the ceiling and below the floor as well as the four side walls. The route must be enclosed from the spawning chamber to the kill area, not merely blocked at the entrance.

The player is attacked at the kill point
Move the attack opening behind a solid barrier or narrow it so mobs cannot pass through. If the route ends too close to the player, add a short corridor or lower the kill room. Keep the player’s standing position within the spawner’s activation range after making the change.

In vanilla Survival, the original block cannot be recovered with Silk Touch. The experience is the only normal drop, so the renewable farm cannot be rebuilt at that location without another spawner.
What a Trial Spawner is
Trial Spawners are part of the 1.21 Trial Chamber system, not upgraded dungeon spawners. They are found naturally in Trial Chambers, cannot be crafted, and cannot be obtained by players in Survival. Their purpose is a bounded combat encounter rather than an endlessly operating drop farm.
Activation and waves
Minecraft’s official Trial Spawner description states: “When a player gets within 14 blocks, they activate and start spawning mobs in a series of waves.” The 14-block distance is the approach trigger described for this feature. Once active, the block creates a limited number of mobs as part of the challenge instead of continuously supplying an unlimited stream.
Rewards after the challenge
When the spawned mobs are defeated, the Trial Spawner ejects rewards. The reward cycle is tied to completing the encounter, so redesigning it as a conventional dungeon farm misses the point of the block. You enter the chamber, survive the waves, and collect what the completed trial provides.

Choosing the right approach
If you found a dungeon cage
Use the dungeon-farm workflow: light the room, clear it, preserve the block, build one enclosed route, and put your attack and storage position close enough to keep the spawner active. The value comes from repeated operation over time.
If you entered a Trial Chamber
Prepare for combat rather than excavation. Identify the Trial Spawner, approach when ready, defeat its waves, and collect the rewards it releases. Do not spend resources trying to mine and relocate it; Survival does not provide that option.
If you are building in Creative
Place a spawner and configure it with a spawn egg for testing or demonstration. Creative configuration is useful for experimenting with room layouts, but it is not evidence that a Survival player can harvest a dungeon spawner.
A compact operating checklist
- Bring torches, food, a weapon, blocks, and a sealing material.
- Light the dungeon before fighting and excavating.
- Mark and preserve the spawner.
- Clear mobs and close every cave opening.
- Build the chamber, transport route, kill point, and storage area.
- Confirm the player position is close enough to activate the spawner.
- Remove temporary lighting only after the route is enclosed.
- Watch the first cycles and correct corners, leaks, or escape gaps.
The Bottom Line
Build around a normal dungeon spawner instead of trying to move it: secure the room, preserve the cage, route mobs to a protected kill point, and keep the player close enough for activation. Treat a 1.21 Trial Spawner differently—it is a limited Trial Chamber encounter that rewards completion, not an unlimited farm.
