To use a Samsung portable SSD, connect it to a compatible computer or mobile device, open it in the device’s file browser, and copy files as you would with other storage. If you enabled password security, unlock the drive before accessing protected files; eject it through the operating system before unplugging. The steps below focus on the Samsung Portable SSD T7. Check the support page and manual for your exact model, since compatibility and software can vary by model and region.

Before connecting: check compatibility and the cable

Samsung’s US T7 support listing gives these minimum operating-system versions: Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, and Android Lollipop or later. These are T7-specific details from a US support listing, not a guarantee for every Samsung portable SSD or every device running those systems. Confirm support for your drive model and host on Samsung’s regional support page.

The T7 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). Use a compatible cable and a suitable USB port; a slower USB interface can limit transfer performance. The drive’s advertised maximum is not a promise of the speed you will see on a particular computer. Samsung says performance can vary with the host system, and its manual notes that even a Gen 2 connection may perform below expectations if the host does not support UASP.

Connect the SSD and open it

  1. Identify the model printed on the drive or its packaging. Find that model on Samsung’s support site and use its manual and current software downloads; software availability and release information can change.
  2. Connect the SSD to the host using the supplied or a compatible cable. Connect directly to a suitable port when possible, rather than relying on an adapter or hub that may limit the interface.
  3. Open the operating system’s file browser: File Explorer in Windows, Finder on Mac, or the corresponding file browser on Android. Select the SSD to view its folders and files. The exact navigation and prompts vary by operating-system version.
  4. Copy files to or from the drive using the normal file-browser controls. Wait for transfers to finish before ejecting or disconnecting it.

The T7 is preformatted as exFAT, which Samsung’s manual identifies as supported by Windows, Mac, and Android. Read/write behavior can still vary by operating system and device. Do not reformat merely because the drive does not appear or a file is inaccessible: formatting erases data. Back up anything important before formatting, and troubleshoot the connection and file-system support first.

Enable password security and unlock a protected drive

The T7 supports password protection using AES 256-bit hardware encryption. Security mode is optional. To configure it, use Samsung software supported for your specific model and operating system, following the current instructions on the model’s Samsung support page. Set a password you can retain securely.

When security mode is enabled, connect the drive and enter its password to unlock it before accessing protected data. If it remains locked, the protected files are unavailable and only a small software partition may be visible. Keep the password: do not assume that reconnecting or changing computers will make protected files accessible without it.

Eject the SSD before unplugging

When you have finished, use the operating system’s eject action for the drive, then disconnect the cable after the system indicates it is safe. Follow the model manual’s instructions for the host operating system. Ejecting after file transfers have completed helps avoid interrupting writes or leaving files in an incomplete state.

What speed should you expect?

Samsung lists the T7 at up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed everyday transfer rates. The actual result depends on the host, connection, workload, and other system conditions; Samsung’s manual states, “Performance may vary depending on user’s system to which T7 is connected.”

For context, Samsung Semiconductor lists up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read/write for the T9, but that maximum requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2-capable host and cable with UASP enabled. A faster drive specification matters only if the rest of the connection supports it. Neither figure should be treated as a speed guarantee for a particular setup.

If the drive does not appear or files are missing

  • Check the connection: reconnect the cable, try a compatible cable and another suitable host port, and confirm the host supports the drive.
  • Check whether it is locked: if you enabled security, unlock the drive with its password. Protected files are not available while it is locked.
  • Check file-system support: the T7 is exFAT-formatted, but support and read/write behavior can vary by host. Consult the operating system and model documentation before changing the format.
  • Do not format as an initial fix: formatting erases the drive. If it contains files you need, avoid formatting and seek a recovery or support path appropriate to the situation.
