Keep a portable room heater at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from curtains and every other combustible object—including bedding, clothing, furniture, paper and sofas. Put it on a stable, level surface, prevent children and pets from reaching or knocking it over, plug an electric model directly into a wall outlet, and switch it off whenever you leave the room or go to sleep. Always follow the heater’s manual if it requires a greater clearance or additional precautions.

The three-foot distance is measured from every side of the heater, not just the front. Curtains can move with drafts, doors or a child pulling them, so a heater that appears clear while the fabric is still may become a fire hazard when it runs.

Start with a three-foot clear zone

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture, bedding and curtains. Its guidance also includes beds, clothes, papers, sofas and anything else that can catch fire. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) gives the same three-foot instruction for bedding, clothing and curtains.

Measure the clearance from each side, the top and the front or rear air openings. Do not let fabric, toys, pet bedding, blankets, laundry or papers overlap that zone. A heater’s grille may be hot even when the case feels only warm, and airflow can pull lightweight fabric toward an intake or outlet.

How to account for moving curtains

  • Keep the heater outside the full sweep of curtains, blinds and drapes, including when a window is open or a fan is running.
  • Tie back or fully open curtains so they cannot fall into the three-foot zone. Do not rely on a loose knot that a child or pet can pull down.
  • Check the curtain position again after the heater has been running. Warm air can create movement that was not obvious when the heater was off.
  • If the room layout cannot maintain three feet on every side, move the heater or use another approved heating method rather than reducing the clearance.

Follow the manual when it is stricter

The three-foot rule is a minimum general safety distance, not a replacement for the manufacturer’s instructions. Some models specify larger distances, prohibited locations, minimum overhead clearance or restrictions near water. Use the greater distance and follow the manual’s ventilation and operating instructions.

Choose a location children and pets cannot reach

Place the heater where a child cannot touch hot components, pull the cord, climb against it or push it over, and where a pet cannot bump it, chew the cord or sleep against it. Official guidance does not establish one universal barrier design or reach distance that works for every age, animal, room and heater.

Use a stable, level surface

  • Set the heater on a firm, level, nonflammable surface that will not wobble when the cord is moved.
  • Keep it out of walkways, door swings, play areas and places where a chair, toy or vacuum can strike it.
  • Do not place a portable heater on a bed, sofa, cushion, carpeted step, unstable table or any surface that can flex or tip.
  • Keep the heater upright in the orientation specified by its manual. Do not operate it on its side or at an angle.

Barriers require care

A gate or guard can prevent direct contact, but it must not narrow the three-foot clear zone, block intake or exhaust airflow, trap heat, or conflict with the manual. Do not improvise an enclosure around the heater. A barrier that keeps a toddler away but places fabric against the grille is not a safe solution. If you cannot maintain both access control and ventilation, relocate the heater or do not use it.

Supervise the room, not just the appliance

Keep children and pets away while the heater is operating, even if the model has a tip-over switch or a cool-touch exterior. Those features can reduce a particular risk; they do not prevent burns from every hot surface, cord damage, or a fire caused by nearby material. An adult should be able to see the heater and respond quickly whenever it is on.

Set up the electrical connection safely

For an electric portable heater, use a wall outlet directly. Do not connect it to an extension cord or power strip. High-wattage heating loads can overheat undersized cords, plug connections or power strips.

Route the cord where it cannot be pulled or damaged

  • Keep the cord along a wall or behind furniture where children and pets cannot tug it into the heater.
  • Do not run the cord under rugs or carpeting. Covering a cord can hide damage and trap heat.
  • Keep the cord away from the heater’s hot surfaces, water bowls, sinks and areas with foot traffic.
  • Do not pinch the cord in a door, staple it to a wall, place furniture on it, or coil excess cord tightly beside the heater.

Stop if the plug, cord or outlet gets hot

A warm or hot plug, cord or receptacle is a reason to stop using the heater. Unplug it only if you can do so safely without touching a damaged or burning component; then seek qualified electrical or appliance help. Do not keep resetting a tripped breaker, replace a damaged cord yourself unless the manufacturer specifically provides an approved procedure, or use an outlet that is loose, scorched or cracked.

Inspect before each season and after moving the heater

  • Look for cuts, crushed insulation, exposed wires, bent prongs, scorch marks or a loose plug.
  • Check that the outlet holds the plug firmly and shows no discoloration or heat damage.
  • Make sure the heater’s grille and air openings are free of lint, dust and pet hair, following the cleaning method in the manual.
  • Confirm that any tip-over shutoff, thermostat or timer operates as described by the manufacturer. Never defeat or bypass a safety switch.

Turn it off before leaving or sleeping

The USFA advises: “Turn heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.” Make this a non-negotiable rule. A child or pet can move an object into the clear zone, a curtain can shift, or a fault can develop after you leave. A timer or thermostat does not make unattended operation safe unless the manual explicitly permits that use and the heater remains supervised as required by its instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable shutdown routine

  1. Switch the heater off using its controls.
  2. Wait for moving air and hot surfaces to cool as directed by the manual.
  3. Unplug the unit if the manual calls for unplugging after use or if it will be stored. Pull the plug, not the cord.
  4. Before leaving, verify that curtains, blankets, toys and pet bedding remain outside the clear zone.

Never leave a portable heater running in a child’s bedroom, a pet’s room or any confined space while no responsible adult is present. Do not use sleep as a substitute for supervision.

Electric and fuel-burning heaters have different hazards

The clearance, stable placement and supervision rules apply to both types, but fuel-burning heaters add combustion and carbon-monoxide (CO) concerns. Fuel-burning appliances may include models using kerosene, propane, natural gas or another fuel. Their exact ventilation and indoor-use requirements vary by model and jurisdiction.

Follow the fuel-burning model’s ventilation instructions exactly

Combustion needs adequate air, and unsafe combustion or venting can produce CO. Use only the fuel, room type and ventilation arrangement specified by the manufacturer. An older CPSC safety release specifically advised keeping doors open to the rest of the house when using an unvented fuel-burning heater. Because that advice is older and model requirements differ, check the current manual and local fire-safety guidance before operating one indoors.

Use working carbon-monoxide alarms

  • Install working CO alarms outside sleeping areas, following the alarm maker’s placement instructions and local code.
  • Test alarms as recommended and replace batteries or the alarm at the stated intervals.
  • If an alarm sounds, or anyone develops headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness or confusion, leave immediately for fresh air and contact emergency services. Do not re-enter until authorities or qualified professionals say it is safe.

A CO alarm does not correct blocked ventilation, a damaged heater or incorrect fuel. Treat it as an early warning, not permission to ignore the manual.

  1. Identify the heater type. Read the label and manual to confirm whether it is electric or fuel-burning, whether indoor use is allowed, and what clearances and ventilation it requires.
  2. Map the three-foot zone. Measure at least three feet from every side and mark the area mentally or with removable floor markers. Use a larger zone if the manual specifies one.
  3. Check curtains and windows. Open or secure drapes outside the zone. Account for drafts, fans, doors and a child’s ability to pull the fabric.
  4. Remove combustibles. Move bedding, clothes, paper, furniture, toys, blankets and pet beds beyond the boundary. Do not store items on top of the heater.
  5. Choose the surface. Set the heater upright on a stable, level surface away from traffic, stairs and door swings.
  6. Plan child and pet control. Use supervision or an appropriate room arrangement that keeps people and animals away without blocking airflow or shrinking the clear zone.
  7. Connect an electric model directly to the wall. Keep the cord out of traffic and never under a rug. Stop if the outlet, plug or cord becomes hot.
  8. Check alarms for fuel-burning use. Confirm working CO alarms outside sleeping areas and follow the model’s ventilation requirements.
  9. Run only while present. Watch the heater during operation and turn it off before leaving or sleeping.
  10. Recheck after movement. If a child, pet, curtain or piece of furniture changes position, switch the heater off and restore the safe arrangement before restarting.

Safety features: useful, but not a substitute for placement

When selecting a portable electric heater, look for a recognized-laboratory certification, an automatic tip-over shutoff, a guard around hot components and clear manufacturer instructions. Verify that the particular model actually has these features; names and controls differ.

Feature What it can help with What it does not solve
Automatic tip-over shutoff Stops or limits heating when the unit tips, if the switch functions as designed. It does not prevent a child or pet from touching hot surfaces, nor does it make a cluttered location safe.
Guard around hot components Reduces direct contact with some heating elements. Guards can still be hot, and they do not replace the three-foot clearance.
Recognized-laboratory certification Indicates evaluation against the applicable safety standard by a recognized testing organization. Certification does not permit extension cords, blocked airflow, damaged wiring or unattended operation.
Thermostat or timer Controls temperature or duration according to the model’s design. It is not a substitute for turning the heater off when you leave or go to sleep unless the manual expressly says otherwise.

Common unsafe setups and the correction

Unsafe situation Why it is risky Correction
Heater beside a curtain or under a window with drapes Fabric can move into hot surfaces or airflow. Move the heater at least three feet away on every side and secure the curtains outside the zone.
Heater on a sofa, bed or thick cushion The surface can tip, block airflow or overheat. Use a firm, level surface approved by the manual.
Power strip or extension cord The connection can overheat under the heater’s load. Plug directly into a wall outlet.
Cord under a rug Damage and heat buildup can remain hidden. Route the cord uncovered, protected from traffic and out of reach.
DIY box or tight safety fence It can trap heat or block intake and exhaust openings. Do not enclose the heater; use a layout that provides supervision and the required clearance.
Running while adults sleep or leave No one can respond to movement, overheating or a developing fire. Turn it off before bed or departure.
Unvented fuel-burning heater with closed doors and no CO plan Combustion products may accumulate. Follow the current manual and local guidance, provide required ventilation and maintain working CO alarms.

What to do if something goes wrong

The heater tips over

Move children and pets away, switch the heater off and unplug it if safe. Let it cool completely. Inspect it for damage and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before using it again; do not assume a tip-over switch means the unit is undamaged.

A curtain, blanket or toy touches the heater

Turn the heater off immediately. If anything is smoking or burning, get everyone out, close the door if possible without delaying escape, and call emergency services from outside. Do not reach through flames or return for belongings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The outlet or plug smells hot or looks scorched

Stop using the heater and obtain qualified electrical help. A damaged receptacle or connection can remain dangerous even after it cools.

A CO alarm sounds

Leave the building with children and pets, call emergency services, and do not go back inside until officials say it is safe. Do not silence the alarm and continue operating the heater.
