Run a portable generator only outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home and every door, window, and vent, with exhaust pointed away from buildings. Keep the equipment dry according to its owner’s manual, connect appliances with individual heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords, keep carbon-monoxide (CO) alarms working, and never refuel a hot or running engine. A garage, basement, shed, porch, carport, or open doorway is not a safe substitute for outdoor placement.
Why winter generator use needs extra care
A winter outage combines several hazards that can develop quickly: carbon monoxide from combustion, electric shock from wet equipment, fire from fuel or hot engine parts, blocked exhaust, and cold-weather decisions made under pressure. Snow can hide a generator’s exhaust path, while people may be tempted to move the unit into a garage or under a porch to keep it dry. Those shortcuts can put the household in danger.
Portable generators produce carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas. Exposure can cause headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says portable generators are associated with about 100 U.S. consumer deaths from non-fire CO poisoning per year, based on its latest report. The release does not state the precise estimation period or method, so treat the figure as an agency annual average rather than a prediction for a particular storm.

The CPSC’s warning is unambiguous: “Opening doors or windows will not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO.” Cold air, wind, or a partly open garage door does not make generator exhaust safe.

Before an outage: prepare the generator and the house
Read the exact owner’s manual
Keep the manual with the generator and read the labels before storm season. The manual controls model-specific instructions for starting, stopping, grounding, fuel, load limits, maintenance, cold starts, precipitation, and electrical-shock protection. CPSC advises maintaining the unit and following every warning in the manual.
- Identify the approved fuel and storage procedure.
- Find the manufacturer’s instructions for rain, snow, covers, and cold temperatures.
- Confirm how the unit should be shut down and restarted.
- Record maintenance dates and inspect the fuel system, oil, cords, plugs, and wheels before an emergency.
Install and test CO alarms
Use working CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, as CPSC recommends. Test them monthly and keep battery-operated or battery-backup alarms available for an outage. Do not disable an alarm because it is inconvenient or because the generator is outside; exhaust can enter through openings or accumulate around a building.
Prepare safe electrical connections
Have individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords that are long enough to keep the generator at least 20 feet from the house and its openings. Inspect each cord for cuts, crushed insulation, bent prongs, heat damage, or wetness. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish one universal cord gauge, generator load plan, or household-wiring procedure. Use the ratings in the generator and cord manuals, and hire a qualified electrician for any permanent connection or transfer-switch work.
Choose a location before the storm
Pick an outdoor location where exhaust can disperse and where doors, windows, vents, and neighboring buildings’ entrances are not downwind of the exhaust. Do not plan to operate the generator in a garage, basement, shed, porch, carport, or any other enclosed or partly enclosed space.
Leave room to inspect the exhaust area without touching hot or moving parts. The surface should be stable and clear of combustible materials. Keep the route for extension cords away from standing water, snow-clearing equipment, vehicle traffic, and walkways where someone could trip.

Consider a CO shutoff feature correctly
CPSC tells buyers to look for a portable generator with a CO shutoff feature. This can add protection if dangerous CO levels are detected, but it is not permission to run the generator indoors, closer than 20 feet, near openings, or without working household alarms.
How far should a generator be from the house?
Place it at least 20 feet from the home, measured from the generator to windows, doors, and vents. Apply the same separation principle to nearby buildings and their openings. Point the exhaust away from the home and other structures, not toward a wall, doorway, window, soffit, or air-intake vent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not reduce the distance because the generator is small, the weather is windy, or a window is closed. Do not place it beneath an overhang that could trap exhaust. If the only available location cannot meet the 20-foot separation and clear exhaust direction, do not operate the generator there; use another power plan or obtain professional advice.
Can you run a generator in a garage if the door is open?
No. An open garage door does not provide enough ventilation. A garage is partly enclosed, and CO can accumulate or flow into the home through adjoining doors, cracks, vents, or air-handling systems. The same prohibition applies to a basement, shed, porch, carport, tent, or any improvised enclosure unless the manufacturer specifically permits a properly installed, NFPA-rated noncombustible generator tent for that model and weather condition.
Never move the generator indoors just because snow, rain, or freezing temperatures make the outdoor location inconvenient. Wait for conditions required by the manual, or use a different emergency-power option.

Can you cover a generator in snow or rain?
Do not assume that a tarp, patio umbrella, plastic sheet, storage box, or homemade roof is safe. CDC guidance says the generator should be placed where rain and snow will not reach it and says not to use a wet generator or wet appliances. CPSC directs users to follow the particular manufacturer’s inclement-weather instructions; those instructions may require waiting for precipitation to pass or may specify an NFPA-rated noncombustible generator tent.
Recommended Free Tools
Use only the weather-protection method expressly allowed by the owner’s manual, installed exactly as directed. Keep every cover away from the exhaust outlet, intake, hot surfaces, and moving parts. If water reaches the generator, cords, plugs, or appliances, stop and follow the manual’s drying and inspection instructions. Do not touch wet electrical equipment while standing in water.
What to do when the outage starts
- Confirm the location. Set the generator outdoors at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents. Keep it out of enclosed or partly enclosed spaces, and aim the exhaust away from the home and nearby buildings.
- Check weather instructions. Follow the manual’s rules for snow, rain, wind, cold, and electrical-shock risk. Do not start or continue operating a wet generator. If the manual requires precipitation to stop, wait.
- Inspect before starting. Look for damaged cords, fuel leaks, blocked vents, accumulated snow, loose parts, and combustible material nearby. Keep hands away from hot and moving components.
- Start it exactly as directed. Use the manufacturer’s starting sequence, fuel type, oil specification, choke procedure, and warm-up guidance. Do not bypass safety devices.
- Connect loads individually. Plug appliances into separate heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords. Keep cords and appliance connections dry, route them to prevent trips, and preserve the 20-foot separation.
- Monitor continuously. Keep household CO alarms active and check the generator area regularly for snow, debris, fuel leaks, unusual noise, smoke, or exhaust obstruction.
How to connect appliances safely
Use individual outdoor-rated cords
Connect appliances directly with individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords sized and rated according to the cord and generator manuals. Use enough length to keep the generator outside the 20-foot boundary. Keep plugs, receptacles, and appliances out of snow, rain, puddles, and melting runoff.
Do not use damaged, indoor-only, wet, overheated, or makeshift cords. Do not daisy-chain extension cords unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Keep cords away from sharp edges, hot exhaust components, driveways, and areas where snowblowers or vehicles could cut them.
Do not guess at the load
Generator output, starting surges, and appliance requirements vary by model. The sources available for this guide do not establish a universal wattage formula or cord-gauge rule. Read the generator’s rated-output and supported-load instructions, prioritize essential equipment, and ask a qualified electrician if you need to power a home circuit or install a transfer switch.

Never backfeed a household through a wall outlet. A permanent connection requires equipment and installation that comply with local electrical requirements and the generator manufacturer’s instructions.
How to keep snow from blocking generator exhaust
Check the exhaust outlet and the area around it repeatedly during the storm. Wind-driven snow, drifting, and roof runoff can build up after the generator starts. Clear snow and debris before they restrict combustion exhaust, but do so only when it is safe and without touching hot or moving parts.
The reviewed CDC, CPSC, and generator-safety guidance does not provide a universal clearance distance for snow around every generator model. Do not invent one. Use the manual’s clearance requirements and keep the exhaust visibly open. If snow cannot be kept from accumulating, stop the generator and move to a safe, approved location only after it has cooled and the manual permits the move.
Also clear snow from household furnace and appliance vents. A blocked furnace vent can create its own CO hazard, even when the generator is correctly placed.

Cool the engine before refueling
Never add fuel while the generator is running. Turn it off and let it cool before refueling, as CPSC instructs. Hot engine parts can ignite spilled gasoline or vapors. Refuel outdoors, away from flames, cigarettes, pilot lights, sparks, and electrical equipment. Wipe up spills according to the manual before restarting.
Store fuel outdoors
Do not store gasoline inside the home, basement, attached garage, or another place where fumes can ignite. Use only approved containers and follow local fire-safety rules and the generator manual. Keep fuel away from children, heat sources, ignition sources, and the generator’s hot exhaust.

- Fuel smell, visible leakage, or a damaged fuel line.
- Smoke, flames, unusual heating, or repeated backfiring.
- Wet electrical connections or standing water.
- A blocked exhaust outlet or rapidly accumulating snow.
- A CO alarm, even if the generator appears to be working normally.
Shutdown and cold-weather maintenance
Follow the manual’s shutdown sequence rather than simply pulling a plug or closing the fuel valve at random. Disconnect loads in the order specified, allow the engine to stop and cool, and store or protect the unit as the manufacturer directs. Never cover or store a hot generator.
After the outage, inspect the unit for water intrusion, ice, damaged cords, fuel leaks, and impact from wind or snow. Complete the manual’s maintenance tasks before the next use. Cold-weather starting, oil viscosity, battery care, fuel stabilization, and storage procedures differ by model; use the exact instructions supplied with your generator.

When to stop using the generator
Stop immediately for a CO alarm, fuel leak, fire, smoke, wet electrical equipment, damaged cord, blocked exhaust, unstable placement, or any condition the owner’s manual identifies as unsafe. If the generator cannot remain outdoors with the required separation and weather protection, do not improvise. A dark house is safer than an enclosed or wet generator.
For household circuits, transfer equipment, grounding questions, repeated breaker trips, or uncertain load calculations, consult a qualified electrician. The correct procedure depends on the generator model, the home’s wiring, local requirements, and the equipment being powered.
