A flip phone’s outer display lets you check alerts, answer or reject calls, control media, open selected quick settings, and frame selfies with the rear cameras while the handset stays closed. Gestures, available apps, and privacy behavior vary by model, region, and software version, so use the instructions for your exact phone rather than assuming every cover screen works the same way.
What the secondary display can do
On a flip-style foldable, the secondary display is the small cover or external screen visible when the phone is folded. It is designed for short interactions that do not justify opening the handset: checking whether an alert matters, glancing at the time, controlling music, answering a call, or using the main cameras for a self-portrait.
The feature is not a universal standard. A Galaxy Z Flip generation and a Motorola razr generation can use different gestures, expose different settings, and allow different apps or widgets. Even within one product family, a software update, regional configuration, or selected control-center style can change what appears. Treat the steps below as model-specific examples and confirm the menu names in your phone’s current user guide.
Prepare the phone before relying on the cover screen
Set up the outer display while the phone is open, then test it folded. Check the exact model name in Settings > About phone and install available system updates. A gesture shown in a guide for a razr 2023, razr 60, or a particular Galaxy Z Flip may not exist on another generation.

- Allow the notifications you actually want to see. If an app is blocked from sending notifications, its alert cannot appear on the cover screen.
- Decide whether message previews should reveal private text when the phone is closed. A visible notification title can expose information to anyone who can see the display.
- Pair a headset or Bluetooth audio device before answering calls if you do not want a folded call routed through the phone’s speaker.
- Learn both the wake gesture and the physical-key shortcut for your model. If one stops working after a setting change, the other may still be available.
- Look under External display, Cover screen, Sleep display, or Control center in Settings. Manufacturers use different labels for closely related functions.
How to check notifications and messages without opening the phone
Galaxy Z Flip instructions documented by Samsung
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip support instructions, last updated December 2, 2020, describe the following folded-phone workflow. They apply to the device and software covered by that support page, not automatically to every later Z Flip model.
- Wake the cover display by pressing the Side key or double-tapping the screen.
- Tap and swipe on the display to inspect alerts, app notifications, and messages.
- If an alert requires the full app, tap the notification and tap it again. Unfold the phone to continue in that application.
- Swipe left to reach music playback controls when media is playing.
For calls, swipe right to answer and swipe left to reject. Samsung says that answering while the phone is folded uses speakerphone unless a headset or Bluetooth audio accessory is connected. Check the screen before speaking: a crowded place, a nearby passenger, or a confidential call may make unfolding or connecting an audio device the safer choice.
Motorola razr 2023 and razr+ 2023
On the razr 2023 and razr+ 2023 instructions, notification icons appear along the bottom of the external display.

- Tap a notification icon to open the notification list.
- Tap the down arrow on a bundled notification to expand it or reveal more information.
- Swipe a notification sideways to dismiss it.
- Swipe down to close the notification list.
This arrangement is useful when several alerts arrive together: the icon row shows that something needs attention, while the expanded view lets you inspect details without opening the handset. The razr 60 guide documents the same general notification-icon and expansion workflow, but individual labels and available actions can differ.
When a notification will not open on the outer display
A cover screen may show an alert but still require the inner display for the app itself. That is a design limitation, not necessarily a fault. If tapping an alert only gives a prompt to unfold, open the phone and continue there. Some apps also suppress sensitive details until the device is unlocked.
Quick controls and media while the phone is closed
Motorola quick settings
The razr 60 guide says to open quick settings by swiping down on the external display. This gives you a faster route to the controls Motorola exposes on that model than unfolding the phone and opening the full notification shade. The exact tiles and their order depend on the phone’s software and configuration.
On other razr generations, the same swipe may open notifications, a control center, or a different panel. If swiping down produces an unexpected result, open the external-display or control-center settings and check which style is selected.

Sleep display on the razr 2024
Motorola’s razr 2024 guide describes Sleep display as a low-interaction view for peeking at the time, notifications, and currently playing media. Tap, lift, or wave gestures can be configured to wake the interactive display. This is useful when you want information at a glance without fully activating the cover-screen interface.
Because a wake gesture can also expose notifications, choose the gesture that fits your privacy needs. A tap may be less likely to trigger accidentally in a pocket; a lift or wave can be more convenient when your hands are occupied, but it may wake the display when another person is nearby.
razr 2025 sleep, always-on, and desk display options
The razr 2025 family guide separates Sleep display, Always-on display, and Desk display settings. Desk display is intended for a tent or stand position and can show a clock or a picture-and-text carousel. The guide also notes that the route to quick settings and notifications changes with the selected control-center style. If a familiar swipe no longer works after changing that style, use the gesture shown in the current on-screen instructions or switch back to the layout you prefer.
Music controls on Samsung
The Samsung support instructions reviewed here document music controls on the cover screen by swiping left. They do not establish that every Galaxy Z Flip generation exposes the same quick-settings panel or media controls. Do not apply the Motorola swipe-down procedure to a Samsung phone unless that model’s own guide documents it.

The outer display can act as a live preview for the rear cameras. Instead of using the inner display’s front-facing camera, you can frame yourself with the main camera hardware, which is often useful for group shots or situations where you want to see the composition clearly.
Galaxy Z Flip camera shortcut
- Fold the phone closed.
- Double-tap the Side key to launch the camera, following Samsung’s documented Galaxy Z Flip procedure.
- Use the cover display as the preview to frame the shot.
- Press Volume Down or use the palm gesture to take the photo.
The camera shortcut and palm gesture can depend on the phone’s settings. If double-tapping the Side key does not open the camera, check the Side key and camera-shortcut settings or use the model’s documented alternative.
razr 2023 and razr+ 2023
- With the phone closed, twist it twice or double-press Power to open the camera.
- Select Photo, then choose Mirror so the external display works as a mirror.
- Frame yourself on the outer screen.
- Tap the display or press Volume Up to capture the image.
The twist gesture is convenient when the phone is already in your hand, while the Power shortcut is easier to remember when you want a physical control. If either shortcut fails, open the camera normally and check gesture or shortcut settings.

razr 60 mirror workflow
The razr 60 guide documents the same general mirror workflow: open the camera while folded, select the photo mode and mirror view, and use the external display to compose the image. It also advises positioning the phone with the camera at the top for a better angle. That orientation can prevent an awkward downward-looking perspective when the handset is held at arm’s length.
Gesture availability depends on setup. A phone that has disabled twist-to-launch, changed the Power-button action, or assigned a different volume-key behavior may require you to start the camera through the cover-screen interface instead.
Customize what appears on the external display
Panels on razr 2023 models
Motorola’s razr 2023 documentation describes external-display panels for apps; contacts, calling, and messaging; calendar; weather; games; and widgets. To manage them, touch and hold a blank area of the Home panel, then select the panel-management option shown on screen. Add the panels you use and remove those that create clutter or expose information you would rather keep private.
Panel availability is model-specific. Seeing a panel listed for the razr 2023 does not prove that the same panel exists on a razr 60 or another generation. Use the list presented by your own phone rather than searching for a missing panel in an unrelated guide.
Panels on the razr 60
The razr 60 guide also describes customizable external-display panels. The practical approach is the same: open panel management from a blank area of the Home panel, then choose the panels you want available while the phone is folded. Keep frequently used controls near the first screen so a short interaction does not become a series of swipes.

Motorola’s razr 2024 guide explains that app-transition behavior can be configured. Depending on the setting, an app that was open on the inner display can continue on the external display after you close the phone. This can be useful for navigation, a timer, or another task that you want to keep visible, but it also means closing the phone may leave more information exposed than a simple notification preview.
Review the transition setting for each supported app or category. Allow continuation for tasks that benefit from a quick glance, and disable it for apps containing private conversations, work material, or account information.

Sleep and Desk display on razr 2025 models
The razr 2025 family provides separate settings for Sleep display and Desk display. Sleep display controls the glanceable state used for time, alerts, and related information. Desk display applies when the phone is placed in a tent or stand position and can show a clock or a picture-and-text carousel. Select the mode that matches how you physically use the handset; a desk-oriented carousel is less useful if the phone normally stays in a pocket or bag.
Privacy, sound, and accidental actions
A smaller screen is convenient precisely because it is visible and quick. That convenience creates three practical risks.
- Notification exposure: full message text or contact names may be readable to someone standing nearby. Reduce lock-screen or cover-screen preview detail if the phone is used in public.
- Speakerphone calls: on the Galaxy Z Flip behavior documented by Samsung, a folded answered call uses the speaker unless a headset or Bluetooth audio accessory is connected. Connect audio first when the conversation is private.
- Unintended wake-ups: lift, wave, and always-on options can illuminate the display or show content when you do not expect it. Choose tap or button activation if accidental reveals are a concern.
These controls are not identical across manufacturers. Look for notification privacy, lock-screen content, audio output, and wake-gesture settings on the exact model.

The screen does not wake
- Press the Side or Power key once, depending on the phone’s labeling.
- Try the documented double-tap, lift, wave, or twist gesture.
- Check that the display is not disabled by a battery-saving or accessibility setting.
- Restart the phone and test again after it has fully booted.
A swipe opens the wrong panel
Different control-center styles can assign the same edge gesture to different destinations. Open Settings and search for Control center, External display, or Cover screen. On razr 2025 models, verify the selected control-center style before assuming the gesture is broken.
A notification appears but cannot be expanded
The app may have bundled the alert, restricted sensitive content, or provided no expanded view. Tap the down arrow where the model supplies one, unlock the phone if prompted, or unfold it to use the full notification shade and app.
The camera shortcut does not launch
Try the physical-key alternative documented for your model: double-tap Side key on the cited Galaxy Z Flip instructions, or double-press Power on the cited razr 2023 workflow. For Motorola models, also check whether the twist gesture is enabled. If the camera opens but no preview appears, select the mirror option in the camera interface.

Only supported apps or app categories can continue externally, and the setting may be disabled. On a razr 2024, review the app-transition option. On other models, use the external-display panel or app list supplied by the phone; do not assume that an inner-screen app can be transferred automatically.

How to compare phones by their secondary-display features
If the cover screen is a deciding factor, compare capabilities rather than outer-screen size alone. The following questions identify meaningful differences without assuming that one manufacturer’s gesture applies to another.

Before buying, open the manufacturer’s guide for the exact generation and region. Confirm which notifications can be expanded, whether quick settings are available, how the rear camera is launched, which apps or panels are supported, and whether call audio can be routed privately. Those details matter more to daily use than a generic claim that a phone has an interactive cover screen.
Practical routines that make the feature useful
Fast morning check
Wake the display, scan notification icons or alerts, dismiss messages that need no action, and open only the items that require a full app. This prevents a stream of minor alerts from turning into repeated unfold-and-lock cycles.

Use the documented media panel or Sleep display to check what is playing and make a quick adjustment. If the gesture behaves differently after a software update, revisit the external-display or control-center setting instead of repeatedly swiping at the wrong edge.
Group selfie
Open the folded camera shortcut, enable Mirror or the equivalent preview mode, position the camera at the top when the model guide recommends it, and use the display tap or volume-key shutter. Check the preview for reflections, face placement, and the camera angle before capturing.
Private call
Connect a headset or Bluetooth audio device before answering when privacy matters. If no accessory is connected and the model routes folded calls to speakerphone, unfold the phone or move to a private location before continuing the conversation.
What to expect from a secondary display
The outer screen is best understood as a fast-access layer, not a smaller replacement for the inner display. It excels at notification triage, glanceable information, media controls, selected quick settings, and rear-camera framing. More involved reading, composing, account management, and apps that are not supported externally still require unfolding.

Use the gestures and settings documented for your exact make, model, region, and software version. When a guide says a feature exists on a razr 60, razr 2024, razr 2025 family, or the Galaxy Z Flip instructions updated in 2020, keep that qualification attached to the instruction. That approach avoids the most common cover-screen frustration: expecting a familiar gesture or panel to behave identically on a different phone.
