To use MySQL on a Minecraft server, create a database and a restricted database user, collect the host, port, database name, username and password, select MySQL in the plugin’s configuration, then save and restart the server. The workflow is consistent across most plugins, but configuration keys and file names vary by plugin and version.
What MySQL changes on a Minecraft server
A Minecraft plugin normally stores data locally in a file, SQLite database or another embedded store. Selecting MySQL moves that plugin’s data into a separate MySQL or compatible database server. The plugin connects over the network whenever it reads or writes data.

A network behind BungeeCord, for example, can use one shared permissions or player-data database so that changes made on one server are available to the others. A remote database can also suit a data-heavy plugin, provided the database server is reachable and sized appropriately.
For one small server, the plugin’s default file or SQLite storage is usually simpler. It avoids database credentials, network access and another service to maintain. Do not switch to MySQL merely because it sounds faster; switch when shared data, centralized administration or the plugin’s documented requirements justify it.

Decide whether MySQL is appropriate
Use MySQL for a multi-server network
- Several Minecraft servers need the same permissions, economy records or other plugin data.
- You are building a network and want a central store before adding more servers.
- The plugin documentation specifically requires or recommends a remote database for network operation.
The official LuckPerms documentation states that a remote database such as MySQL is needed when you run multiple servers in a network or plan to do so. Each server must use the same database details and compatible plugin configuration.
Keep local storage for a single small server
- The server is standalone and the plugin’s built-in file or SQLite option meets your needs.
- You do not want to expose a database port or manage credentials.
- The plugin does not document a MySQL benefit for your use case.
Changing storage is an operational decision, not a mandatory Minecraft setting. Check the plugin’s own documentation before changing an established installation.

Before editing a configuration file, make sure you have administrative access to both the Minecraft server and the database service. You need these five connection values:

| Username | A SQL account used by the plugin | The dedicated user you create or the panel generates |
| Password | The secret for that SQL account | Set it during user creation and store it securely |
Keep the values together in a password manager or another protected location. A Minecraft plugin configuration commonly contains the password in plain text, so restrict access to the server files and never paste the file into a public issue or chat.
Create the database and a dedicated user
Managed game-host panel
Panel labels differ, but the process is usually:
- Open the server’s management panel and select Databases.
- Click NEW DATABASE (or the panel’s equivalent).
- Choose a database name and create a database user with a strong password, if the panel separates those actions.
- If the panel has a connections from field, leave it empty when the Minecraft server itself must connect and the panel’s instructions define an empty value as unrestricted. If the panel lets you specify the server address, use the narrowest permitted source instead.
- Copy the generated hostname, port, database name, username and password before leaving the page.
Some hosts display a combined address such as database-host:port; others put the hostname and port in separate fields. Enter them in the format required by your plugin.

MySQL on a machine you control
Create one database for the plugin and one SQL account dedicated to that database. The following is an illustrative pattern; replace every example value and apply the account-host restriction appropriate to your network:

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;mpdb is simply an example database name. The account should have access to the one schema it needs, not unrestricted access to every database on the server. If the Minecraft server and MySQL run on the same machine, your administrator may use a local account host; if they are separate, the account and firewall must permit the Minecraft server’s address.
Do not give a plugin your MySQL administrator account. A dedicated account limits the damage from a leaked password or a plugin defect. After creating the account, verify that it can log in and access only the intended database.
Open the plugin configuration
Stop the server before making a configuration change when your host recommends doing so, or use the panel’s file editor carefully and restart afterward. Plugin files are often under the server’s plugins directory. On a managed host, open the panel’s Files tab, enter the relevant plugin folder and locate config.yml or the file named in that plugin’s documentation.
Find the plugin’s storage setting. It may be a selector such as storage-method, a boolean that enables MySQL, or a nested database section. Do not copy key names from another plugin: two plugins can use different names for the same setting, and a key can change between versions.

Enter the five connection values exactly as supplied. If the plugin expects one combined address, use the documented form, commonly hostname:port. If it has separate host and port fields, keep them separate.
Quote YAML text values
Quote usernames, hostnames and especially passwords in YAML. Characters such as :, #, !, braces or leading symbols can otherwise be interpreted as YAML syntax.
username: "mc_plugin"
password: "replace-with-your-password"Preserve indentation. YAML is whitespace-sensitive, so a correctly spelled setting at the wrong indentation level can behave as if it were missing.
Worked example: configure LuckPerms for MySQL
LuckPerms uses a file-based H2 database by default, so a new installation works without database setup. To use MySQL, edit its storage settings after creating the database and user.

- Open the LuckPerms configuration file. Depending on the version, it may be
config.ymlorluckperms.conf. - Find the Storage Settings section.
- Set the storage method to MySQL:
storage-method: mysql- Fill in the
datablock with the values from your database provider:

password: "replace-with-your-password"The address above is an illustration. Use the hostname and port supplied for your installation; do not assume that localhost:3306 is correct. A third-party configuration example also shows a connection-pool setting with a maximum pool size of 10, but that layout is illustrative rather than an authoritative default. Add optional pool settings only when the LuckPerms version you run documents them.

Save the file, restart the server and inspect the startup log. A successful startup loads the MySQL storage provider without connection or authentication errors. If the server still reports H2 or file storage, recheck the storage-method key, the file you edited and the YAML indentation.
Restart and verify the connection
- Save the configuration with the server stopped or through the panel’s supported editor.
- Start or restart the Minecraft server.
- Watch the console from the beginning of the startup sequence.
- Look for the plugin’s storage provider to load as MySQL without an exception.
- Perform a small, reversible operation in the plugin, such as changing a test permission, then restart again and confirm the change persists.
A successful login alone is not enough if the plugin is still configured for local storage. Confirm both that the MySQL provider loaded and that the plugin can read data after a restart.
Use one database across multiple Minecraft servers
For a network, configure every participating server with the same database address, schema name, username and password. Each server must also run a compatible plugin version and use the same storage method. A database hosted on one private server must be reachable from every Minecraft server through its firewall and network route.

Do not create a separate schema for each server when the purpose is shared data. Conversely, do not point unrelated plugins at the same schema unless their documentation explicitly supports it. A dedicated schema or clearly separated table namespace makes backups and troubleshooting safer.
When multiple servers write at the same time, follow the plugin’s guidance for caching, connection pooling and synchronization. Those settings are plugin- and version-specific; there is no universal MySQL configuration that can be copied across all Minecraft plugins.

Back up before changing storage
Changing from H2, a file store or SQLite to MySQL can involve a data migration. Make a copy of the plugin’s existing data directory and configuration before changing the storage method. Also arrange a database backup after the first successful MySQL startup.
Some third-party guides show the LuckPerms command lp migrate mysql. Because that command is not confirmed here against the official documentation for every version, do not run it blindly. Verify the migration procedure for your exact LuckPerms release, take a backup first and follow the documented order of operations. A storage switch that connects successfully does not necessarily migrate old records automatically.
Troubleshoot common failures

Read the first database-related error rather than only the final shutdown message. Later errors are often consequences of the original authentication, address or parsing problem.
Protect the database credentials
- Use a unique, long password for the plugin account.
- Grant access only to the required database; never use the MySQL administrator account in a plugin.
- Limit which host or network can connect when your provider supports it.
- Restrict panel and file-manager access to trusted administrators.
- Remove passwords from screenshots, bug reports and public repositories.
- Back up both the database and the plugin configuration before upgrades or migrations.
If a password is exposed, change it in MySQL or the hosting panel and update every server that uses the account. Restart the affected plugins so they discard the old connection and authenticate with the new credential.
Handle plugin-specific configuration carefully
The general sequence—create credentials, enter connection details, select MySQL, restart and inspect logs—is portable. The names and locations are not. LuckPerms documents storage-method: mysql and a data block, while another plugin may place its settings under an economy or database section.
Search the exact documentation for your installed plugin and version before adding keys. An unverified search excerpt describes EssentialsX MySQL fields such as enabled, host, port, database, username and password under an economy section, but that layout should not be treated as confirmed for every EssentialsX release. Use the plugin’s shipped configuration and official documentation as the authority.
There is no single 2026 configuration format for Minecraft plugins. Version changes can rename files, move sections or alter migration commands, so a configuration copied from an older tutorial may silently fail.
Operational checklist
- MySQL is running and reachable from the Minecraft server.
- A database exists for the plugin.
- A dedicated SQL user has access to that database only.
- You recorded the exact hostname, port, database name, username and password.
- The plugin’s documented MySQL setting is enabled.
- All YAML text values are quoted and indentation uses spaces.
- You backed up the old local data before attempting migration.
- After restarting, the console shows the MySQL provider loading without errors.
- A test change survives another restart.
The Bottom Line
MySQL is most useful when a Minecraft plugin’s data must be shared across servers. Create a restricted database account, use the exact connection details supplied by your host, configure the plugin according to its own versioned documentation, back up existing data and verify the provider in the startup log.
