A mini PC can serve as a Tailscale Peer Relay, giving devices another route when they cannot connect directly. That may improve a transfer compared with Tailscale’s DERP fallback, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade: direct connections usually have the lowest latency and highest throughput. Tailscale’s launch materials do not establish that a mini PC will make transfers “instant,” and no speed improvement should be claimed without measuring the same transfer before and after.
What a Tailscale relay does—and what it does not do
Tailscale devices can communicate directly, through a customer-deployed Peer Relay, or through Tailscale’s DERP relay. Tailscale prefers a direct connection. When that is unavailable, a peer relay may provide a route; DERP is another fallback. Tailscale describes peer relays as generally faster than DERP, but a relay is not inherently faster than a successful direct connection. Tailscale’s connection-types guide explains these paths and their trade-offs.
| Connection path | Who provides it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | The two Tailscale devices connect to each other. | Usually the lowest latency and highest throughput; may be prevented by NAT or network conditions. |
| Peer Relay | A node you configure in your tailnet. | Can provide an alternate route when direct connectivity fails; may outperform DERP in some cases, but is not promised to beat direct. |
| DERP | Tailscale’s relay infrastructure. | A fallback relay path when devices cannot connect directly; Tailscale’s guidance says peer relays are generally faster. |
The distinction matters: “Tailscale relay” can mean either a Peer Relay you operate or the DERP fallback. Use “Peer Relay” when that is the feature actually configured. For a broader explanation of why direct connections fail, see Tailscale’s firewall and connectivity guidance.

How to set up a mini PC as a Peer Relay
Tailscale says Peer Relays can be enabled on a Tailscale node and are available on all plans, including Personal, according to its February 18, 2026 general-availability announcement. A relay needs a UDP port reachable by both sides of a connection, and tailnet policy determines which devices may use it. The exact port, address, firewall rule, and endpoint configuration depend on your network and deployment; follow Tailscale’s Peer Relay setup documentation for the current configuration steps.

- Choose a suitable always-on host. Install Tailscale on the mini PC and confirm that it can remain powered and connected for the periods when other devices need to relay through it. The documentation supports a Tailscale node serving as a peer relay; it does not specify a minimum CPU, memory, Ethernet speed, or mini PC model. Choose hardware appropriate for your operating system, network, and sustained workload.
- Enable Peer Relay on that node. Use the current instructions in Tailscale’s Peer Relay documentation. Configuration details can depend on how the node is addressed and exposed on your network.
- Make the relay endpoint reachable. Configure the required UDP port so it can be reached by both sides of the intended connection. Check host and network firewalls, and use the address and endpoint settings appropriate to your deployment.
- Authorize use in tailnet policy. Set the access permissions so the intended devices are allowed to use the relay. Do not treat network reachability alone as authorization; policy controls which devices can use it.
- Verify the connection path. Check Tailscale’s status or debugging information on the participating devices to see whether the session is direct, peer-relayed, or DERP-relayed. Configuration by itself does not prove a particular transfer used the relay.
Tailscale says traffic remains end-to-end encrypted with WireGuard when it passes through a relay. Relay use therefore changes the route, not the stated end-to-end encryption model. See Tailscale’s connection-types documentation.
How to tell whether the transfer is using the relay
Inspect Tailscale’s status or debugging information on the devices involved. The connection details can identify a direct connection, a peer-relay path, or a DERP relay. Tailscale documents status and connection troubleshooting in its troubleshooting guide. If a transfer remains slow, first establish which path it is using; do not infer relay use merely because the mini PC is online.

- Direct: the devices found a peer-to-peer route. A relay is not carrying that session.
- Peer relay: the customer-managed relay is carrying the session.
- DERP: Tailscale’s relay infrastructure is carrying the session.
Connection paths can vary with network conditions. Check the path during the transfer being evaluated, rather than relying on an earlier status observation.

How to test whether it actually makes transfers faster
Compare like with like. A before-and-after result is useful only if the transfer conditions are sufficiently consistent and you record the path used each time. Tailscale’s performance guidance recommends investigating why devices are relayed and improving direct connectivity where feasible; Peer Relays are an option when direct connectivity cannot be achieved, not a universal optimization. See Tailscale’s connectivity guidance and its performance guidance.

This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
- 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
- Use the same two endpoints, the same file, and the same transfer application and protocol for each run.
- Keep network conditions as consistent as practical, and record whether each run is direct, peer-relayed, or DERP-relayed.
- Measure elapsed time or throughput for the completed transfer. Repeat runs if results fluctuate, and report the observed values rather than describing an unmeasured improvement.
- Compare the paths actually used. A faster peer-relayed run than a DERP-relayed run does not show that a peer relay is faster than a direct connection.
Tailscale’s official materials do not give a numeric transfer speed, percentage gain, or mini PC benchmark for this scenario. The claim that one setup changed a transfer from “crawling to instant” is therefore a personal result, not a published performance guarantee.
Is a Peer Relay the same as a subnet router or exit node?
No. These features solve different routing problems. A Peer Relay forwards Tailscale traffic between devices when a direct connection is unavailable. A subnet router advertises routes to devices on a private physical subnet, while an exit node routes a client’s internet-bound traffic through a selected Tailscale device. Tailscale explains the distinctions in its exit node documentation and subnet router documentation.

Use a Peer Relay when you need an alternate path for Tailscale device-to-device connections. Choose a subnet router to reach devices on a network that do not run Tailscale, or an exit node when you want a client’s outbound internet traffic to use another device’s connection.
When to troubleshoot direct connectivity instead
If a session is relayed, Tailscale recommends checking why direct connectivity is unavailable. NAT behavior, firewall rules, and network restrictions can affect whether devices establish a direct UDP connection. If the networks can be configured to permit direct connectivity, that may provide lower latency and higher throughput than a relay. If they cannot, a reachable Peer Relay can be a practical alternative, subject to endpoint reachability and tailnet policy.
