Spread food in a single layer with visible gaps between pieces. If the food touches, overlaps, or has to be piled up to fit, cook it in batches instead. For larger loads, stir or rearrange food during cooking only as your appliance’s instructions direct. Basket capacity, accessories, and controls vary by model, so follow the manual for your exact microwave air fryer combo.
How much food should you put in the basket?
Use enough food to cover the basket without forcing pieces together or stacking them. There is no universal fill line or capacity for microwave air fryer combos: basket shape and the manufacturer’s food guidance differ. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 instructions put it plainly: “For best results, place food in a single layer and leave space between pieces.” Panasonic NN-CD87 air-fry instructions
If a full load leaves no gaps, split it into batches. Adding more cooking time is not a reliable substitute for spacing; check doneness using the food and appliance instructions.
Load the combo in the order its manual specifies
Before cooking, find the Air Fry instructions for your exact model and identify the approved basket, rack, and tray. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 setup is specific: put food in the air-fry basket, place the basket on the wire rack, put the rack on the enamel tray, and set the enamel tray on the glass tray. Do not assume another model uses the same stack.

Preheating is also model-dependent. Breville’s BMO870 manual directs users to preheat with the Combi Crisp pan in the high position for three minutes, then add food in a flat, single layer. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 support sequence does not give that same preheat step. Follow the procedure for your appliance rather than combining instructions from different models. Breville BMO870 manual
Arrange, monitor, and finish the food
- Check the Air Fry procedure. Use the control-panel and manual instructions for your model, including its accessory arrangement and any preheat requirement.
- Spread food in one layer. Leave gaps between pieces; arrange larger items so they are not stacked and can be turned if the instructions call for it.
- Stir, shake, or turn only as directed. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 guidance recommends stirring or rearranging several times for a larger amount. GE’s guidance may prompt users to flip food, and Breville’s program has its own prompts. GE air-fry guidance
- Cook a second batch if needed. If you cannot maintain a single layer with gaps, remove some food and cook it separately.
- Handle hot parts carefully. Use oven mitts for the basket and trays; Panasonic warns that food, accessories, and the oven can become very hot.
Use food-chart quantities as model-specific examples
Panasonic’s NN-CD87 chart lists 8–16 oz (225–450 g) of thin frozen fries with a suggested cooking time of 20–30 minutes, and 16–36 oz (450–1000 g) of chicken wings with a suggested time of 25–30 minutes. The chart includes a turn-or-stir note. These are recommendations for that model, not general capacity limits or guaranteed times for other appliances, food sizes, or starting temperatures. Check accessory rules before changing modes
A basket or metal rack allowed during Air Fry may not be suitable for microwave-only cooking or every combination mode. Panasonic says its NN-CD87 enamel tray is not for microwave-only cooking; its separate CV87/CV88 accessory guidance says included air-fry accessories should be used only in the specified modes. Panasonic’s NN-CV88QS documentation also distinguishes Combo 1 (microwave plus broil) from Combo 2 (microwave plus convection bake), with separate tray guidance. Consult your own manual before moving accessories between Air Fry, convection, combination, and microwave-only modes.
