Treat any matchstick lamp that produces a flame as an open flame. Keep it where a child or pet cannot reach, pull, or knock it over; stay in the room while it burns; extinguish it before leaving or sleeping; and place it on a level, heat-resistant surface well away from anything combustible. If the lamp burns liquid fuel, secure that fuel separately and follow the maker’s instructions exactly.
The name “matchstick lamp” does not identify one standard design. It may describe different mechanisms, fuels, and clearances. Check the label and manual first. If you cannot keep the actual lamp and its fuel inaccessible, use a flameless LED candle instead.
First identify what your “matchstick lamp” actually is
“Matchstick lamp” is a descriptive phrase, not a universal product category. The evidence available for this topic does not establish a particular maker, model, fuel, wick, ignition system, or safety guard. Do not assume that it is an oil lamp, a candle lamp, or a particular type of decorative light.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore lighting it, inspect the product for a model name, fuel specification, warning label and operating instructions. Look for the required fuel, maximum fill level, approved replacement parts, lighting and extinguishing method, ventilation requirements, minimum clearances and cleaning instructions. If the label and manual disagree with generic candle advice, follow the product instructions and the stricter safety requirement.

- It produces a visible flame: apply the open-flame precautions in this guide.
- It uses liquid fuel: treat the fuel container as a separate child- and pet-access hazard.
- The mechanism or fuel is unclear: do not light it until the maker’s instructions identify the safe operating method.
- The lamp is damaged, unstable or missing instructions: do not use it around children or pets.
London Fire Brigade, Health Canada, Fairfax County and a UK government home-fire-safety guide publish general advice for candles, oil lamps and other open-flame devices. That advice cannot establish the permitted fuel or clearance for an unidentified lamp.
Use this go/no-go test before lighting
Lighting is reasonable only when every answer below is “yes.” A single “no” means postpone use or choose a flameless alternative.
- Can the lamp be placed where a child cannot touch, pull, climb to or reach it?
- Can no pet jump onto, brush against or knock over the lamp or its stand?
- Can you remain in the room and continuously see the lamp while it is burning?
- Is the surface level, stable and heat-resistant?
- Are curtains, clothing, paper, furniture, decorations, bedding and other combustible materials outside the manufacturer’s required clearance?
- Is the specified fuel available in the correct container, with all other fuel locked away or otherwise inaccessible?
- Do you know how to extinguish this exact model safely?
- Is the lamp intact, with no cracked glass, leaking reservoir, loose parts or damaged wick?
“Small,” “decorative” or “only burning for a minute” are not safety exemptions. A flame can ignite nearby material or be tipped before an adult can react.
Choose a location children and pets cannot reach
Use a stable, heat-resistant surface
Set the lamp on a level surface that will not wobble, slide or tip when lightly bumped. The surface must tolerate the lamp’s heat. Do not balance it on a stack of books, a narrow shelf, a tablecloth that can be pulled, a windowsill accessible from furniture, or any stand that a pet can move.
Keep the lamp away from the edge of a table or counter. A child can pull a cloth or reach up unexpectedly; a dog wagging its tail or a cat jumping onto furniture can produce the same result. If the manufacturer specifies a stand, base or minimum distance from walls, use it exactly as described.
Remove things that can burn
Maintain the stated clearance from curtains, blinds, clothes, paper, furniture, bedding, toys, decorations, packaging and any other combustible item. Do not place the lamp near a doorway, beside a sofa, under a shelf, or where a draft can move a curtain toward the flame. Keep it away from vents and fans if airflow can make the flame unstable.
Do not rely on height alone
A high shelf is not automatically safe. Children may climb, pull furniture toward it or use a nearby chair. Pets may jump from another surface. Check the entire route to the lamp, including cords, table runners, shelves and objects that could be used as steps. A barrier is helpful only if it prevents access and cannot itself be moved or climbed.

Stay with the lamp every moment it burns
Never leave a burning candle or oil lamp unattended. London Fire Brigade’s home guidance says to keep candles and all naked flames, including matches and lighters, out of children’s and pets’ reach. It also advises putting a flame out when leaving the room and before bed.
“Supervision” means an awake adult remains in the room, can see the lamp and can reach it quickly without crossing a hazard. Watching a monitor from another room, taking a shower, answering the door, cooking in a separate area or going outside does not meet that standard. If another adult takes over, make the handoff explicit.
A safe operating routine
- Clear the area. Move combustible objects, check the base and confirm that children and pets are excluded from the room or cannot reach the lamp.
- Prepare the fuel or ignition system. Use only the fuel and amount specified by the maker. Never improvise with a different oil, alcohol, solvent or household liquid.
- Light according to the manual. Keep hair, sleeves and loose clothing away. Do not carry the lamp while it is lit.
- Remain present. Keep the flame in direct view and prevent children or pets from entering the access zone.
- Extinguish before any interruption. Put it out before leaving the room, going to sleep, carrying it, refilling it or allowing a child or pet back into the area.
- Verify that it is fully out. Follow the model’s extinguishing method and wait for hot parts to cool before touching, moving or storing the lamp.
Do not refill a lamp while it is lit or hot. A fuel spill can ignite immediately. Wait for the product to cool for the period specified by its instructions, then refill in a controlled area away from children, pets, sparks and other flames.
If the lamp uses liquid fuel, add a separate fuel-safety plan
Liquid fuel creates a hazard even when the lamp itself is not burning. Health Canada advises keeping liquid-fuel products out of sight and reach of young children or locked away. It specifically advises: “Avoid using decorative oil lamps with liquid fuel if you have children under the age of five in your household.”

Apply it conservatively when your lamp has a liquid reservoir or uses bottled fuel.
- Store fuel in its original, labelled container, tightly closed and upright.
- Keep it in a locked cabinet or other location children and pets cannot access; do not leave it beside the lamp.
- Use only the fuel named by the manufacturer. Never mix fuels or transfer them to an unlabelled drink bottle.
- Inspect the reservoir, cap and seals for leaks before each use.
- Clean spills immediately using the product’s instructions, keeping all ignition sources away until vapour has dissipated as directed.
- Do not let a child hold the fuel bottle, help refill the lamp or handle a used wick.
If a child under five lives in the home, visits regularly or can enter the room, the safest choice for a decorative liquid-fuel lamp is not to use it. Select a flameless LED light instead.
Account for children’s changing abilities
Babies and toddlers
Assume that a toddler can reach farther, pull harder and climb more quickly than expected. Place the lamp outside the room during play, not merely on a higher part of the same furniture. Secure furniture that could be climbed or tipped and remove tablecloths and cords that invite pulling.

Preschool and school-age children
Explain that the lamp is hot and must never be touched, but do not treat the explanation as a control. Children may forget rules when excited, tired or trying to retrieve a toy. Keep the lamp inaccessible and supervise every burn.

Older children
An older child may be able to follow instructions, but lighting, refilling and extinguishing still require an adult unless the manufacturer explicitly permits a supervised procedure and you have assessed the child’s maturity. Matches, lighters and fuel remain locked away.
Account for pet behaviour, not just reach
Dogs can knock a stand with a tail or leash, and cats can jump onto furniture or pull at decorations. Birds and other small animals may be attracted to a flame or hot surface. Consider the pet’s normal movement, not its position at the instant you light the lamp.
- Keep the lamp out of rooms where pets roam freely unless an adult is present.
- Block launch points such as sofas, shelves, cat trees and counters.
- Keep toys, treats and food away from the lamp so a pet has no reason to approach it.
- Do not leave a pet alone with a lit lamp even inside a crate or playpen; the enclosure may be moved or the animal may be injured by heat or smoke.
What to do if it tips, spills or behaves unexpectedly
If the flame is knocked over
Move children and pets away immediately. Do not pick up a burning lamp with bare hands. If it is safe and you know the model’s extinguishing procedure, smother or extinguish the flame as directed. Do not throw water onto burning oil or an electrical device. If fire spreads beyond your ability to control it instantly, leave, close doors behind you if possible and call emergency services from outside.
If liquid fuel spills
Keep everyone away and remove ignition sources only if you can do so without crossing the spill or vapour. Do not operate switches or create sparks in the contaminated area. Follow the fuel and lamp manufacturer’s spill instructions and contact local emergency or poison information services if someone is exposed. Ventilate only as the instructions and local emergency advice permit.

When a child or pet could reach the light, removing the flame is the most reliable way to remove the ignition and burn hazard. London Fire Brigade describes flameless LED candles as a much safer alternative to real candles and notes that they avoid concerns about children or pets knocking them over. An LED product still needs its own instructions: keep batteries away from children, inspect damaged wiring and follow charging guidance.

| Decision factor | Flame-producing matchstick lamp | Flameless LED candle |
|---|---|---|
| Open flame | Yes; treat as a naked flame | No open flame |
| Child or pet knocking it over | Can cause burns or ignite nearby material | Cannot ignite material through a flame, although the unit can still be damaged or swallowed if small |
| Supervision | Continuous adult presence while lit; extinguish before leaving or sleeping | Follow the LED product’s operating and battery instructions |
| Fuel access | Liquid-fuel models add storage and spill risks | No lamp fuel; batteries require child-safe storage |
| Best use when access cannot be controlled | Do not use | Preferred alternative, subject to its instructions |
An LED candle is an alternative, not a guarantee of childproofing. Do not describe any particular model as universally safe, and keep button-cell batteries locked away because swallowed batteries can cause severe injury.
Maintenance, storage and end-of-use checks
Use the inspection schedule in the manual. Before each use, check the base, reservoir, wick, glass, cap and any guard for damage, looseness or residue. Keep the lamp clean without using an unapproved solvent. Replace only parts specified by the maker.

What the historical fire figures do—and do not—show
Health Canada reported an estimate of nearly 800 candle fires per year in Canada on average from 1999 through 2008, using data from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. The same estimate gave annual averages of 8 fire deaths, 115 fire injuries and $26.2 million in property damage. Health Canada published the figures approximately in 2013 and stated that Canada-wide candle-fire statistics were not available.
These are historical estimates for candles and specified provincial data, not current nationwide counts and not statistics for matchstick lamps specifically. They demonstrate why unattended flames deserve serious controls, but they cannot predict the risk of a particular lamp, fuel or household.
A practical decision framework
Use the lamp only when all controls are available
- The exact product instructions are present and understood.
- The lamp and fuel can be kept inaccessible to every child and pet who may enter.
- The surface and clearance meet the maker’s requirements.
- An awake adult can stay with it for the entire burn.
- The lamp is intact and can be extinguished safely.
Choose the LED option when any control fails
Use a flameless LED candle when you cannot guarantee continuous supervision, when a child under five lives in a home with a decorative liquid-fuel lamp, when a pet can reach or knock the lamp, when the product’s fuel or instructions are unknown, or when the lamp must remain on while everyone sleeps or leaves.
Quick Recap
Key rules to post near the lamp
- Keep every naked flame out of children’s and pets’ reach.
- Use a stable, heat-resistant surface and clear all combustible materials.
- Stay in the room and watch the flame continuously.
- Extinguish it before leaving, sleeping, moving or refilling.
- Lock away liquid fuel, matches and lighters.
- Follow the actual lamp’s label and manual; never guess the fuel or clearance.
- When safe access cannot be maintained, remove the flame and use a flameless LED alternative.
