Yes—you can use a Fire TV Stick without owning a television. Connect it to an HDMI computer monitor or an HDMI-equipped projector, provide power, select the correct HDMI input, join Wi‑Fi, and finish setup with the Fire TV remote. The stick still needs a display; it cannot show a picture by itself.
What you need
- A Fire TV Stick with its power cable and adapter
- An HDMI monitor or projector with an HDMI input
- Wi‑Fi access
- An Amazon account and the included Alexa Voice Remote
- Speakers, headphones, or another audio solution if the display has inadequate sound
Amazon’s setup process requires an HDMI display and on-screen instructions, so a display is not optional even when you do not use a television.
Use a computer monitor as the screen
An HDMI monitor is usually the simplest substitute for a TV. It works well on a desk, in a bedroom, dorm, or office where you want a relatively small fixed screen.

- Connect the Fire TV Stick’s power cable to the included power adapter and a suitable power outlet.
- Turn on the monitor and choose the HDMI input used by the stick. The monitor’s input control may be labelled Source, Input, or HDMI.
- Insert batteries in the Alexa Voice Remote if necessary and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Connect the Fire TV Stick to Wi‑Fi, sign in to your Amazon account, and complete the remaining setup screens.
Many monitors do not include speakers, and some have no headphone or audio output. Check the monitor’s specifications before relying on it for sound.

Use a projector for a large picture
An HDMI projector turns the Fire TV Stick into a portable, large-screen streaming setup. Projector instructions commonly identify the HDMI or HD port as the connection for a Fire TV Stick and streaming services.
- Place the projector where it can throw a clear image onto a suitable wall or screen.
- Connect the Fire TV Stick to the projector’s HDMI/HD input.
- Power both devices, then select that HDMI input on the projector.
- Focus and size the projected image, if required.
- Complete Wi‑Fi, Amazon-account, and remote setup on the projected screen.
A projector needs more physical setup than a monitor: you must control placement, focus, projection distance, and room lighting. Bright ambient light can make the image look less contrasty, while a monitor generally remains easier to see in ordinary room light.

Monitor or projector: which fits your space?
| Decision | HDMI monitor | HDMI projector |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Usually plug-and-play at a desk | Requires placement, focus, and a wall or screen |
| Image size | Smaller, fixed size | Much larger image possible |
| Room lighting | Generally usable in normal room light | Bright rooms can reduce perceived contrast |
| Audio | Some have speakers; many do not | Built-in speakers vary widely |
| Portability | Easy to move around a desk | Portable models can be carried but need projection space |
| Best fit | Bedroom, office, dorm, or desk viewing | Movie nights and large-screen viewing without a TV |
Make the audio work
Check whether the monitor or projector has usable built-in speakers or a headphone/audio output. If its speakers are weak or absent, pair compatible Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker with the Fire TV. Bluetooth headphones are particularly useful when you want private listening or are using a display with no speakers.
Can a laptop be the screen?
Do not assume that a laptop can display the Fire TV Stick. A laptop’s HDMI connector is usually an output for sending the laptop’s picture to another screen, not an input for receiving video from a Fire TV Stick. Use an HDMI monitor or projector unless your specific laptop model explicitly provides HDMI input and the required display software.

Screen mirroring is optional
Fire TV can mirror compatible devices when the source device and Fire TV are connected to the same Wi‑Fi network and Display Mirroring is enabled under Settings > Display & Sounds. On compatible models, open the mirroring option on the source device and select the Fire TV.
This feature does not remove the need for a display connected to the Fire TV Stick: the stick still needs a monitor or projector for its own setup and viewing. Amazon’s compatibility guidance also states that iOS and macOS are not supported through this Fire TV mirroring path, and the Display Mirroring option may be missing on incompatible Fire TV models.

Common problems and fixes
The screen says “No signal”
- Confirm that the stick is fully inserted into the monitor or projector’s HDMI port.
- Use the display’s input menu to select the exact HDMI port in use.
- Check that the Fire TV Stick is connected to its power adapter, not merely relying on the HDMI connection.
You see video but hear nothing
- Raise the display’s volume and verify that it is not muted.
- Check whether the monitor or projector actually has speakers.
- Use compatible Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker when built-in audio is unavailable.
The remote will not complete setup
- Install or replace the remote batteries.
- Keep the remote near the Fire TV Stick while pairing.
- Follow the on-screen pairing prompts before attempting to navigate through setup.
Mirroring is unavailable
- Put both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Open Settings > Display & Sounds and check for Display Mirroring.
- Confirm that the source device and Fire TV model support Amazon’s mirroring feature. iOS and macOS are excluded from this documented path.
Bottom line
An HDMI monitor is the easiest television replacement for compact, everyday viewing. An HDMI projector is the better choice when you want a portable, much larger image. In either case, the Fire TV Stick still requires power, Wi‑Fi, an Amazon-account sign-in, the remote, and a connected display.
