To drive screws without stripping them, use the exact bit profile and size, seat it squarely and fully, apply steady pressure along the screw’s axis, and begin at low speed. On a drill/driver, start with a low clutch setting and increase it only until the screw reaches the intended depth. On an impact driver, feather the trigger and use a lower-speed or precision mode when available. Stop as soon as the head is flush or the planned depth is reached.

Stripping is not prevented by the tool alone. The screw head, bit condition, alignment, material, pilot hole, torque setting, speed and operator control all interact. The procedures below show how to control each factor, choose between the two tools and recover when a screw starts to cam out.

What causes a screw to strip?

A screw strips when the driver bit loses firm contact with the recess and rounds its edges. The bit can then cam out, spin in place or damage the surrounding workpiece. The most common causes are a mismatched bit, a worn bit, an angled tool, insufficient forward pressure, excessive speed or torque, and continuing to drive after the screw has reached its intended depth.

  • Wrong profile or size: Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, square and other recesses are not interchangeable. Even within one profile, a bit that is one size too small can appear to fit while contacting only the corners.
  • Worn or damaged bit: Rounded tips and chipped edges cannot transmit torque evenly. Replace the bit rather than compensating with more pressure or speed.
  • Misalignment: Holding the driver at an angle loads one side of the recess and encourages cam-out.
  • Low axial pressure: Rotation can push the bit out of the head unless you press straight toward the fastener.
  • Too much torque or speed: A screw can bottom out, break or spin the bit against the recess before you release the trigger.
  • Material resistance: Dense wood, hardwood, metal or a long fastener may require a pilot hole, a different screw or a more capable tool.

Fixing the first cause you notice is often not enough. For example, an impact-rated bit will still strip a screw if it is the wrong size or held crooked.

Drill/driver or impact driver: which is better?

Choose based on the amount of control and force the job requires, not on the name of the tool. A clutch-equipped drill/driver applies continuous rotation and lets you limit torque. An impact driver adds rapid rotational hammering, which helps with long or demanding fasteners but can deliver force quickly.

Consideration Drill/driver Impact driver
Control Adjustable clutch provides a repeatable torque limit; variable speed gives a gradual start. Trigger control is primary. Some models add low-speed, precision or fastening modes.
Best fit Delicate assembly, smaller screws and jobs where consistent seating matters. Longer or tougher screws and fasteners that need pulsing rotational force.
Risk to a screw Over-tightening is reduced when the clutch is set correctly, but a high setting can still damage the head or material. Impacts can seat a screw rapidly; uncontrolled use can strip, break or overdrive it.
Technique Start at low speed and a low clutch number, then raise the setting only as needed. Start with the trigger barely engaged, watch the run-down and release immediately at the target depth.

Tool capabilities and mode labels vary by model. The exact manual for your tool controls the meaning of its clutch numbers, speed modes and safety warnings. Neither tool guarantees that a screw will not strip.

Prepare the screw, bit and workpiece

Match the bit to the recess

Read the screw packaging or inspect an undamaged screw to identify the profile. Push the bit into the recess by hand before fitting it to the tool. It should fill the recess with minimal side-to-side play and no rocking. A full, even contact patch keeps torque distributed across the recess instead of concentrated on a few corners.

Use a fresh bit when the tip is visibly rounded, polished, chipped or twisted. For an impact driver, choose a bit designed for impact use; its construction is intended to tolerate repeated impacts. That designation does not make an incorrect profile fit correctly, so match the exact size first.

Secure the work

Clamp the board, panel or bracket whenever practical. A moving workpiece makes it difficult to keep the bit square and can pull the fastener sideways. Keep the free hand away from the rotating bit and from the line where the tool could twist. Wear eye protection, especially when working overhead or with brittle materials.

Decide whether to drill a pilot hole

A pilot hole can make a wood screw easier to start, reduce driving resistance and help prevent splitting. Its diameter depends on the screw and the material; there is no single size that fits every wood screw. Use the screw manufacturer’s guidance or a size chart for the specific fastener, and test on scrap when the material is valuable or unfamiliar.

In thin stock, a clearance hole through the top piece can let the screw pull the pieces together while the lower piece receives the threads. In hardwood or near an edge, drilling a pilot hole is especially useful. Do not assume that a pilot hole intended for one screw length or material is correct for another.

How to drive a screw with a drill/driver

  1. Install the bit. Open the chuck, insert the bit fully and tighten the chuck evenly. Pull the bit by hand to confirm it is held securely.
  2. Select the gear. Use the lower-speed, higher-torque gear for screwdriving unless your manual specifies otherwise. The high-speed gear is easier to overrun when the screw seats.
  3. Set the clutch low. Start near the low end of the numbered collar. On many models, higher numbers allow more torque; the DCD708/DCD709 manual describes the collar this way and recommends advancing the setting as needed.
  4. Start square. Place the tip in the recess before pulling the trigger. Keep the tool in line with the screw and press straight forward.
  5. Run slowly. Begin with a light trigger pull. Increase speed only after the bit is fully engaged and the screw has started straight.
  6. Watch the head. As the head approaches the surface or the planned depth, ease off the trigger. Release it when the clutch slips or when the screw reaches the mark you made.
  7. Check the result. The head should be flush, countersunk to the intended depth or at the specified height. If it is too high, raise the clutch one step and make a short correction; if it is too deep, lower the setting for the next screw.

Make practice runs in scrap or an inconspicuous area. The DCD708/DCD709 instructions specifically recommend starting low and increasing the collar setting only as necessary. The useful setting is the lowest one that reliably reaches the required depth, not the highest number that the tool offers.

How to drive a screw with an impact driver

  1. Fit an impact-rated bit. Insert it completely into the quick-change holder and verify that the collar has locked. A bit that is not fully seated can wobble and cam out.
  2. Choose the gentlest mode. If the tool has a low-speed, precision or assist mode, select it for small screws, soft materials and visible surfaces. Makita’s T-mode on the XPT02Z, for example, downshifts rotation and impact speed before seating; that feature is specific to that model, not universal.
  3. Place the switched-off tool on the screw. Keep the bit straight and apply forward pressure before touching the trigger. Bosch safety instructions warn that rotating driver tools can slide off a fastener.
  4. Feather the trigger. Use short, controlled pulls at first. Let the impacts build only after the screw is tracking straight and the bit remains fully engaged.
  5. Anticipate reaction torque. The housing can twist opposite the bit as the fastener seats or is removed. Hold the tool with both hands when the manual recommends it, brace your wrist and keep your body clear of a sudden movement.
  6. Release before bottoming out. Impact action can continue to drive after the head looks nearly seated. Stop the trigger as soon as the head reaches the planned depth; finish a delicate final adjustment with a hand screwdriver if necessary.
  7. Inspect the head. If the recess shows fresh damage, stop and replace the bit or screw rather than trying to force the fastener farther.

An impact driver’s extra force is useful for resistance, not a substitute for alignment. DEWALT describes impact drivers as using rotational hammering for screws and bolts, but that category description is not an independent comparison or a promise of strip-free driving.

How to choose a clutch setting

Clutch numbers are relative to the tool, not a universal torque scale. A setting that seats one screw in soft pine may stall before the same screw reaches depth in hardwood. Use this adjustment loop:

  1. Choose the lowest setting likely to start the screw.
  2. Drive one screw into scrap of the same material and with the same fastener.
  3. If the clutch releases before the head reaches the target, increase the setting by one step.
  4. Repeat until the screw reaches the target without excessive sinking, spinning or material damage.
  5. Use the established setting for the batch, then recheck when the screw length, material, bit or pilot-hole size changes.
Observed result Adjustment for the next screw
Clutch releases while the head is still high Increase torque one step and retest.
Head is flush and the material is undamaged Keep the setting.
Head sinks too far or the surface crushes Lower the setting; slow the trigger and inspect the pilot hole.
Bit slips before the clutch releases Stop. Check profile and size, replace the bit if worn, realign and restart at lower speed.
Screw breaks or the driver stalls repeatedly Stop forcing it. Check pilot-hole size, screw suitability, material resistance and tool mode.

Speed, pressure and alignment techniques

Keep the bit on the screw’s axis

Imagine a straight line extending through the screw. Your hands, the driver and the bit should stay on that line. If the bit is visibly leaning, release the trigger, reposition and restart. Correcting angle while the bit is spinning is more likely to damage the recess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use pressure without leaning your body into the tool

Apply firm, controlled forward pressure so the bit stays seated, but do not push so hard that you cannot release the trigger instantly. A two-handed grip can improve control on long screws or when the tool produces strong reaction torque.

Use a staged run-down

For a long screw, drive most of the length at moderate speed, then slow down as the head nears the surface. This gives you time to recognize rising resistance and stop before overdriving. For a short screw, a brief trigger pulse may be all that is needed.

Common problems and recovery steps

The bit repeatedly cams out

  • Stop immediately; continued spinning rounds the recess.
  • Compare the bit to a new one and confirm the profile and size.
  • Clean debris from the screw recess.
  • Place the tool squarely, increase forward pressure slightly and restart at low speed.
  • If the recess is already damaged, replace the screw when possible rather than trying to finish it.

The screw will not start straight

Back it out and make a starter dimple with the bit or a pilot hole appropriate to the material. Do not use the driver to force a visibly angled screw into the workpiece. A crooked start increases side loading and makes later stripping more likely.

The head is too deep

Lower the clutch, reduce trigger speed and verify that the bit is not slipping. For countersunk screws, confirm that the countersink matches the head shape. If the material is soft, a washer or a different head design may be more suitable than simply reducing torque.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screw stops before reaching depth

Do not immediately switch to maximum torque. Check for a missing or undersized pilot hole, an unsuitable screw for the material, a dull bit or an obstruction. Increase a drill/driver clutch setting one step at a time. With an impact driver, use short trigger pulses and stop if the bit begins to climb out.

The screw head is already stripped

Stop driving and remove the bit. If any edges remain, try a new, correctly sized bit with strong axial pressure at low speed. If the head cannot hold a bit, use a removal method suited to the fastener and material, such as gripping an exposed head or using a screw extractor. Protect the workpiece from slipping tools and wear eye protection. Do not keep hammering the damaged recess deeper.

Material-specific decisions

Softwood

Softwood often accepts a screw without a pilot hole, but splitting remains possible near an edge or end. A pilot hole can improve straightness and reduce the force needed. Use a low clutch setting because the head can sink quickly.

Hardwood

Hardwood usually benefits from a pilot hole sized for the screw and from a slower final run-down. Test on an offcut because species and moisture change resistance. If the driver stalls, do not respond by forcing the trigger while the bit is slipping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Composite panels and thin stock

These materials can crumble or strip when overdriven. Use a pilot hole where appropriate, keep the screw perpendicular and stop at flush rather than burying the head. A clearance hole in the top piece can help draw two panels together without excessive torque.

Metal

Use a screw and drill bit intended for the metal and thickness involved, and follow the fastener maker’s hole-size guidance. Clamp the work, use eye protection and clear chips safely. The drill/driver clutch can help prevent over-tightening, but it does not replace the correct pilot or clearance hole.

Safety checks before and during driving

  • Read the exact tool manual for clutch, speed, mode and bit-holder instructions.
  • Inspect the bit, chuck or quick-change holder and screw before starting.
  • Secure the workpiece and keep cables, clothing and fingers away from the rotating bit.
  • Wear eye protection; drilling and driving can eject chips or broken fragments.
  • Expect reaction torque, particularly with an impact driver and long fasteners.
  • Keep the tool switched off while placing it on the fastener or moving to the next screw.
  • Release the trigger before the head bottoms out, the clutch slips repeatedly or the bit starts to climb out.

A repeatable workflow for a batch of screws

  1. Sort screws by profile, size and length; do not mix visually similar bits.
  2. Prepare a fresh bit and mark the target depth on the bit or use a depth stop when appropriate.
  3. Make one test hole in scrap from the same material.
  4. Set the drill/driver clutch at the lowest successful value, or select the lowest controlled impact mode.
  5. Drive the first production screw slowly while watching the head and material.
  6. Inspect the result before continuing the batch.
  7. Pause after several screws to check bit wear and confirm that the setting still suits the material.
  8. Recalibrate whenever the screw, bit, material, pilot-hole size or joint changes.

This process is faster than repairing a row of damaged heads because it finds an incorrect bit or torque setting before the mistake is repeated.

Key takeaways

  • Fit matters first: use the correct profile, exact size and an undamaged bit.
  • Alignment and axial pressure keep the bit engaged; speed cannot compensate for a poor fit.
  • Start a drill/driver at a low clutch setting and raise it only in small steps after a test.
  • Control an impact driver with the trigger and any precision mode; its impacts increase force but do not remove the need for care.
  • Use a material-appropriate pilot hole, secure the workpiece and stop at the intended depth.
  • When a bit slips, release the trigger immediately, diagnose the cause and replace the damaged screw or bit before continuing.
