To use a controller with an iPhone or iPad, put a compatible wireless controller into its model-specific pairing mode, then choose it in Settings > Bluetooth. For a wired connection, use a cable that supports data and charging; your device and controller may also require an adapter. Pairing only connects the hardware: the game itself must support controller input.
How do I connect a controller to my iPhone or iPad?
- Turn on the controller and follow its manufacturer’s instructions to enter Bluetooth pairing mode. The button combination varies by model.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed.
- Tap the controller when it appears in the nearby devices list.
- Open a game and test the controls. If the game does not respond, check that it supports controllers and look for controller options in the game’s settings.
Apple lists specific Xbox and PlayStation controller families as compatible. That does not mean every controller from either brand—or every controller feature—will work in every setup.
Pairing a listed Xbox controller
Apple documents the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708), Xbox Wireless Controller Series S and Series X, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Turn on the controller, hold its Connect button for a few seconds to enter pairing mode, then select it in the iPhone or iPad Bluetooth settings. Apple documents the PlayStation DualShock 4, PlayStation 5 DualSense, and DualSense Edge wireless controllers. If a controller is on, turn it off first and disconnect its USB cable. Hold PS + Share on a DualShock 4, or PS + Create on a DualSense or DualSense Edge, until the light flashes. Then select the controller in Bluetooth settings. How to connect a controller with a cable
Some controllers pair and connect automatically when plugged directly into an Apple device with a USB cable that supports both data and charging. A charging-only cable will not meet that requirement. Depending on the iPhone or iPad model and controller, you may also need an adapter; there is no single adapter established as suitable for every combination. Check whether the game supports controllers
A successful Bluetooth or USB connection does not make a game controller-compatible. Developers implement controller support in individual games, so check the game’s current App Store listing and settings before buying a controller or troubleshooting one that appears to be ignored.

Apple’s App Store editorial page, “Play With a Game Controller”, is a place to discover games selected for controller play. It is not a complete compatibility guarantee: support can vary by game, controller, and feature. Apple’s developer documentation explains how developers add the Game Controller capability to a game.

Customize controls and combine two controllers
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Game Controller to customize default controls or add a game-specific configuration for supported games. Apple describes these customization settings for iOS 16 or later and iPadOS 16 or later in its controller guide.

Buddy Controller lets two connected compatible controllers work together as input for one player in a supported game. Apple describes it as a way for another person to help with challenging parts of a game. Whether this setup works as intended depends on the game and controls involved.

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Confirm it is powered on and in the correct pairing mode for that exact model.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on, then check the nearby-device list again.
- Install current software updates for the Apple device and controller, as applicable. Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping software current.
The controller pairs but does not connect
For the listed PlayStation controllers, press and release the PS button. If the connection still fails, forget the controller in Bluetooth settings and pair it again, following Apple’s general controller troubleshooting steps.

The game ignores the controller or some controls do not work
First confirm that the game supports controller input; then inspect its control settings. Apple notes that support for specific buttons and features, such as a controller’s audio jack or lights, varies by controller and app. A controller can connect successfully even when a particular game does not use all its controls or features.

The Bluetooth connection is intermittent
Apple recommends reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices to help with interference-related connection problems. If the issue continues, review Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.
