To use a controller with a browser game, first confirm that the particular game accepts gamepads. Connect a compatible controller by USB or Bluetooth, open the game in a current supported browser, click the game so its page is focused, and press a controller button. If the game still ignores it, the problem is usually game-level support, pairing, page focus, or an incompatibility between the controller, browser, operating system, and game—not the mere availability of browser gamepad APIs.
A browser can expose controller input through the Gamepad API, but the game must be programmed to read that input. Some browser games support controllers while others are designed only for mouse, keyboard, or touch controls. Check support for the specific game and device combination before buying a controller or cable.
Check whether the game supports a controller
Do this before changing browser settings or buying hardware. Controller support is implemented by the individual game or streaming service; it is not automatically added when a browser supports the Gamepad API.

Look in the game’s own information
Check the game’s instructions, settings, controls screen, help page, or product listing for terms such as controller, gamepad, or gamepad support. If the game shows only keyboard, mouse, or touch controls, a connected controller may have no effect. Look for an input or controls menu after launching, too: a game may offer a controller option or a control-scheme selector that is not obvious from its listing.

Xbox Cloud Gaming has a service-specific indicator
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft says the individual game page identifies controller support. Microsoft Edge’s guide, published April 11, 2023, says, “If you see a small controller icon on the page, it’s controller-ready!” That statement applies to Xbox Cloud Gaming product pages, not to every game portal or website. The guide also notes that availability and compatibility can vary by region.
Do not confuse browser support with game support
MDN describes the Gamepad API as a way for a web page to detect gamepads and read their state. A game still has to listen for that input and map it to actions. Therefore, all of these can be true at the same time:
- Your computer recognizes the controller.
- Your browser supports the Gamepad API.
- A browser-based game does not respond because it has no controller implementation.
Verify the game first, then troubleshoot the connection. This order matters: buying a different controller will not add controls to a game that was built only for keyboard, mouse, or touch input.
Choose a wired or wireless connection
The practical options covered here are USB and Bluetooth. Use whichever your controller and computer both support.
| Connection | What you need | Best first check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | A cable that fits the controller and computer | Connect the controller and confirm that the computer detects it | Connector types vary. Microsoft’s Xbox example uses micro-USB, but that is not a universal controller connector. |
| Bluetooth | A controller with Bluetooth and a computer with Bluetooth enabled | Put the controller into pairing mode and select it in the computer’s Bluetooth settings | The controller may need charging, and pairing steps differ by model. |
The cited Microsoft setup confirms USB and Bluetooth as options for an Xbox controller. The available documentation does not establish comparative latency, battery life, or reliability, so choose based on your hardware, cable access, and preference for a cable-free setup rather than an assumed performance advantage. A wired connection avoids the need to pair over Bluetooth; a wireless setup avoids a cable across your play area. Either way, the controller and computer must support the connection you choose.
There is no universal cable recommendation: check the connector on the controller and the available port on the computer. Microsoft’s micro-USB example applies to the Xbox controller setup described in its guide, not to every Xbox model or other controller. If you do not already own a suitable controller or cable, verify the game and device compatibility first; these sources do not specify a general purchase price.
Connect the controller to a computer
USB connection
- Identify the controller’s connector and an available matching port on the computer.
- Connect the cable firmly at both ends.
- Wait for the operating system to finish recognizing the device.
- Open the game only after the connection is established, or reload the game if it was already open.
Do not assume that a micro-USB cable is required. That connector appears in Microsoft’s Xbox-controller example, while other controller models may use a different connector. If the cable does not fit, check both ends rather than forcing it or buying an adapter without confirming the device’s requirements.

Bluetooth connection on Windows for an Xbox controller
Microsoft’s instructions describe this sequence for an Xbox controller and a Windows computer:
Rank #2
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds, until the Xbox button flashes.
- Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings.
- Choose Add device.
- Select the controller from the list of available devices.
These labels and steps are specific to the Microsoft example. Other controllers can use a different pairing button or menu, and other operating systems may present different settings. If the controller does not appear, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the computer, the controller is charged, and it is not already connected to another device. Once the computer shows it as connected, proceed to the game rather than assuming that pairing itself enables every game to use it.
Open, focus, and activate the game page
- Open the game in a current browser that the game supports.
- Navigate to the actual game screen rather than leaving focus in the address bar or another tab.
- Click or tap inside the game canvas or play area.
- Press a controller button once. If the game has an input or controller menu, follow that menu’s instructions.
- Try a movement control and an action button to confirm that input reaches the game.
MDN documents a visibility and interaction condition in Firefox: a page can receive gamepad visibility after the user interacts with a controller while that page is visible. Making the game page visible and pressing a button is therefore a sensible first detection check. Browser and platform behavior can differ, so this is not a complete diagnosis for every setup.
If you connected the controller after the game was already open and nothing happens, reload the game after saving any progress the game lets you save. Some pages may only check for devices during startup; reloading is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. If there is a controls screen, check for a prompt to select or configure the controller before testing movement.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What the browser is doing: the Gamepad API
The Gamepad API is an input interface between a web page and a controller. MDN describes it as widely available across browsers since March 2017. MDN’s Gamepad API page was checked October 13, 2026, and cautions that some parts have varying support. This is an API-level availability statement, not a percentage of games or controllers that work, and it does not mean a particular page has implemented controller input.
Connection and disconnection
A web game can respond to gamepadconnected and gamepaddisconnected events. A simplified diagnostic example looks like this:
window.addEventListener('gamepadconnected', event => {
console.log('Connected:', event.gamepad.id);
});
window.addEventListener('gamepaddisconnected', event => {
console.log('Disconnected:', event.gamepad.id);
});
Players do not need to run JavaScript to play. This example is useful for a developer or for someone diagnosing a web game with developer tools. If a developer uses it, the events can help distinguish a page that sees a connection from one that never sees the device; they do not prove that the game has mapped buttons to useful actions.
Reading controller state
MDN describes navigator.getGamepads() as returning the gamepads visible to the page. A returned Gamepad object can include:

- A browser-recognized standard mapping, when one is available.
- Button objects with pressed or analog values.
- Analog axes.
- Connection status.
The mapping value can indicate a standard layout, but it does not guarantee that every game will use the buttons as you expect. The final behavior depends on the controller, browser, operating system, and game code. A web game can recognize the device yet interpret its controls differently from the player’s expectations; look for an in-game control scheme or remapping option if one is available.

Browser compatibility tables have a limited purpose
Can I Use lists Gamepad API support by browser and version. Such a table can answer whether a particular browser release exposes the API, but it cannot prove that a particular game implemented controller controls. Browser support data changes, so consult its live table when a version-specific answer matters. The practical sequence remains: check the game, check that the computer sees the device, then check the browser and page.
Diagnose a controller the game ignores
1. Confirm game-level support again
Return to the game’s instructions or listing and look for explicit controller support. If the game accepts only keyboard, mouse, or touch input, no browser setting can add controls that the game has not programmed. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, use the individual game page’s controller indicator; do not apply that indicator to unrelated sites.
2. Confirm the computer connection
Check whether the operating system lists the controller as connected. For USB, confirm that the cable and ports fit. For Bluetooth, verify that the controller is paired rather than merely powered on. This check isolates a connection problem from a game-level limitation.
3. Make the page visible and focused
Close or minimize other tabs that might be receiving input, click the game area, and press a button. This is especially relevant to Firefox’s documented page-interaction behavior. If the game is in a background tab, bring it to the front before testing again.
4. Reload after connecting
Some games inspect available devices only when they load. Connect the controller first, then reload the game page. Save progress if the game supports saving before reloading. Reloading can prompt a page to check the device again, but it cannot make an unsupported game compatible.
5. Check the game’s own input screen
If the game offers a controller or key-binding menu, open it and look for a detected device. Some games require selecting a control scheme before movement or actions work. Compare any button prompts with what you are pressing; a recognized controller may still use a layout or mapping the game interprets differently.
6. Test another known-compatible game
Use a different browser game that explicitly advertises gamepad support. If the controller works there, the original game is the more likely limitation. If it fails everywhere, investigate pairing, the cable, operating-system recognition, or browser compatibility. This comparison is more informative than testing a second game whose controller support is unknown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Re-pair or reconnect
Disconnect the controller, restart Bluetooth pairing or reconnect the USB cable, and then repeat the focus-and-button step. A controller connected to another device may need to be disconnected there first. Reconnect only after confirming that the computer’s Bluetooth or USB connection is available.

8. Check the cloud service’s requirements
For a cloud game, consult that service’s current information for supported browsers, games, and controllers. Microsoft points Xbox Cloud Gaming users to compatible-controller information and says availability may vary by region. A controller that works with a local browser game is not automatically supported by every cloud service or game.
Fix common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The game never reacts | The game does not implement gamepad input | Check the game’s controls and support information; use keyboard or mouse if those are the only supported methods. |
| The controller is not visible at first | The page is hidden, unfocused, or has not received an interaction | Make the game visible, click its play area, and press a controller button. |
| Bluetooth pairing fails | Bluetooth is off, the controller is not in pairing mode, or it is connected elsewhere | Enable Bluetooth, repeat the model-specific pairing sequence, and disconnect other devices. |
| A cable does not fit | The connector on the controller differs from the computer port or cable | Check both ends and use a cable that fits; do not generalize the micro-USB example to every model. |
| Buttons are in the wrong places | The controller layout is not being interpreted as the game expects | Check the Gamepad API mapping, select a standard layout, or remap controls in the game if available. |
| A cloud game rejects the controller | The service, game, region, or controller is outside its supported combination | Use the service’s current browser, game, and compatible-controller information. Microsoft notes that Xbox Cloud Gaming availability can vary by region. |
| The computer sees the controller but the game does not | The page may lack gamepad support, may need focus, or may not have refreshed after connection | Focus the visible game page, press a button, check the game’s input menu, and reload after saving if needed. |
| The controller works in one game but not another | Controller support differs by game | Check the second game’s own controls rather than assuming browser-level support guarantees compatibility. |
Understand controller and game compatibility as separate checks
Compatibility has several layers. Passing one layer does not establish the next.
- Physical layer: The controller can connect by a compatible USB cable or Bluetooth.
- Operating-system layer: The computer recognizes the device.
- Browser layer: The browser exposes the Gamepad API and allows the page to see the device.
- Game layer: The game reads gamepad events, axes, and buttons.
- Service or region layer: A cloud-gaming service permits that controller, browser, game, and region combination.
When a setup fails, identify the first layer that fails instead of changing every setting at once. If the computer does not see the controller, focus on the cable or pairing. If the computer sees it but a particular game does not, look at page focus and game support. If it works in one game but not another, the games’ implementations may differ. This narrows the cause and avoids buying a new controller for a game that never supported controllers.
Before buying a controller or cable
- Check the exact game’s controller statement, not just the browser’s feature list.
- Check the controller’s connection options and the computer’s available ports or Bluetooth capability.
- For cloud gaming, check the service’s current compatible-controller information and regional availability.
- Confirm the connector before buying a cable. A cable suitable for one controller may not fit another.
- Treat an Xbox controller as an optional example supported by Microsoft’s browser-game guidance, not as a universal requirement.
Compatibility is more useful than a generic “works with browser games” claim. Verify the game and the controller/platform combination you intend to use. Microsoft cautions that not all controllers work with browser games and points Xbox Cloud Gaming users to compatibility information. The cited material does not establish prices for controllers or cables, so there is no reliable universal cost estimate here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When browser choice matters
Use a current browser supported by the game or cloud service. The Gamepad API has broad browser availability, but MDN notes that individual parts can vary. A compatibility table such as Can I Use can help with a browser-version question; it cannot answer whether the game itself has controller code.
If one browser fails while another works, compare the game’s documented browser requirements, update the failing browser, reconnect the controller, and repeat the visible-page interaction. Avoid concluding that the controller is defective until it has been checked at the operating-system level or with another explicitly compatible game. Browser API availability and a game’s own compatibility information answer different questions.
A compact setup checklist
- Read the specific game’s controls and confirm gamepad support.
- Check the controller and computer for a compatible USB or Bluetooth connection.
- Connect the controller before starting or reloading the game.
- Open the game in a current supported browser.
- Click the game area so the page is active and visible.
- Press a controller button and test movement plus an action button.
- If nothing happens, verify operating-system recognition, reload, inspect the game’s input menu, and test another known-compatible game.
- For cloud gaming, verify the service’s controller, browser, game, and regional requirements.
What successful setup looks like
The computer shows the controller as connected, the game page is active, and the game’s own controls or on-screen prompts respond to buttons and axes. If the computer sees the controller but the game does not, the remaining issue is generally game support, page visibility, input mapping, or a service-specific compatibility rule. The browser’s ability to expose gamepad data alone is not a promise that every browser game will accept it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will any controller work with any browser game?
No. The computer, browser, controller, and game all need to work together, and the game must implement gamepad controls. Check the particular game’s instructions or listing before assuming support.

Do I need a special browser to use a controller?
Not necessarily. MDN describes the Gamepad API as widely available across browsers since March 2017, while noting that some parts vary. A browser exposing the API does not mean every game uses it; use a current browser supported by the game or cloud service.
Why does the controller work on my computer but not in the game?
Operating-system recognition confirms only that the computer sees the device. The game still needs controller support. Make the game page visible and focused, press a button, check its input menu, and confirm that the game advertises gamepad controls.
Should I use USB or Bluetooth?
Either can work if both the controller and computer support it. USB requires a suitable cable and matching ports; Bluetooth requires a Bluetooth-capable controller and computer and model-specific pairing steps. The cited guidance does not establish a general performance or reliability advantage for either.
What should I do if Firefox does not detect the controller?
Bring the game page to the foreground, make sure it is visible, click its play area, and press a controller button. MDN documents a user-interaction and visible-page condition for gamepad visibility in Firefox, though behavior can vary by platform.
Does the Xbox controller icon mean every website supports controllers?
No. Microsoft’s small controller icon guidance refers to Xbox Cloud Gaming game pages. Other game portals have their own listings and support information.
Do I need to buy an Xbox controller or a particular cable?
Not necessarily. Xbox is an example in Microsoft’s setup guidance, not a universal requirement. Check the game’s support and your controller-computer connection options first; connector types vary, so confirm both ports before buying a cable.
The Bottom Line
Start with the game’s own controller-support information, then connect a compatible controller by USB or Bluetooth. Open the game in a supported browser, focus the visible page, and press a button. If the controller works on the computer but not in the game, check game-level support, the game’s input menu, browser and service compatibility, and any regional limits before buying different hardware.
