Use a calibrated portable CO₂ monitor in the occupied breathing zone, record readings during ordinary room use, and compare later measurements with a baseline for that same space. A rising or persistently high reading is a reason to check outdoor-air delivery and HVAC operation—not proof that a room is unsafe. CO₂ is an indirect ventilation indicator: it cannot identify infectious people, count airborne viruses, or confirm that every contaminant is being removed.

What a CO₂ monitor can—and cannot—tell you

People add carbon dioxide (CO₂) to indoor air when they exhale. In an occupied room, the concentration therefore reflects the relationship between occupancy and the outdoor air entering the space. If more people occupy the room while outdoor-air delivery stays the same, CO₂ generally rises. If outdoor air increases, the concentration can fall.

That relationship makes CO₂ useful as a practical signal for ventilation checks. It does not make CO₂ a complete indoor-air-quality measurement. A monitor measures the concentration at its sensor location. It does not measure respiratory viruses, identify an infectious occupant, estimate infectious-particle production, or prove that contaminants are being captured near their source. CDC/NIOSH says evidence is limited for a direct link between a particular CO₂ concentration and respiratory-virus transmission risk.

Use the instrument to find patterns: how quickly a room accumulates CO₂, whether the concentration falls when outdoor air is increased, and whether normal use repeatedly produces higher readings than the room’s established baseline. Treat every number as conditional on the room, occupancy, doors and windows, HVAC operation, and sensor placement.

Choose a calibrated portable monitor

Why calibration matters

CDC/NIOSH advises using calibrated, reliable instruments before drawing meaningful inferences from CO₂ readings. An inexpensive display that has not been calibrated or whose operating instructions are ignored can create false reassurance or unnecessary concern. The reviewed guidance does not validate a particular consumer model or brand, so choose by documented performance and usability rather than by a brand name.

Features worth comparing

  • Calibration approach: Look for a stated method and instructions for checking or correcting the instrument. Follow the maker’s setup and calibration directions exactly.
  • Stated accuracy and range: Compare the manufacturer’s published specifications, especially over the concentrations you expect indoors.
  • Logging: A device that records readings over time is more useful than one that only shows a momentary value. Logs help reveal peaks, recovery after airing, and differences between occupied and unoccupied periods.
  • Portability: A battery-powered unit can be moved between rooms, but allow it to stabilize according to the manufacturer’s instructions before treating a reading as representative.

No single specification substitutes for a sensible measurement plan. A well-specified meter in the wrong air stream is still giving you the wrong answer for the occupied room.

Place the sensor where people actually breathe

Use the occupied breathing zone

Place the monitor near the breathing zones of the occupied part of the room. The aim is to sample the air people are inhaling, not a convenient but unrepresentative surface. In a classroom, meeting room, bedroom, or office, that usually means positioning the unit in the area where occupants spend time rather than beside a wall, in a corridor, or on top of an HVAC unit.

There is no universal sensor height or distance that applies to every instrument. Follow the meter maker’s placement instructions and use practical judgment about where occupants sit or stand.

Avoid air streams that dilute the sample

Do not place the sensor directly in a heating or cooling supply jet, an exhaust stream, or a window’s incoming-air path. These currents can contain air that has not mixed with the room and may depress the displayed concentration. A wall-mounted reading can therefore be misleading, particularly in rooms that are not well mixed. If a window draft or supply jet crosses the sensor, move it and allow the reading to stabilize before recording it.

Check more than one location when the room is complex

Large rooms, rooms divided by furniture, and spaces connected to corridors can have different air patterns. A single monitor cannot establish that every occupied spot has the same concentration. Move the instrument to representative occupied areas at different times, or use more than one instrument if the decision depends on spatial differences. Keep the room conditions comparable when you compare locations.

Establish a room-specific baseline

Measure ordinary use, not an idealized test

Start by observing the room while it is being used normally and while the HVAC system is operating as intended. Record the number of occupants, whether doors and windows are open or closed, and the relevant HVAC state. A reading taken when a room is unusually empty or when windows are propped open for a one-off event may not describe ordinary operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use repeated observations or a time log instead of relying on one spot check. Note the starting concentration, the highest concentration reached during occupancy, and how the value changes after occupants leave or outdoor air is increased. The baseline is a description of this room under stated conditions, not a universal property of the meter or a promise that every room should have the same number.

Keep the comparison conditions visible

For each session, record:

  • Room or zone measured.
  • Approximate occupancy and whether people entered or left during the session.
  • Door and window positions.
  • HVAC operating mode and any unusual fan, damper, or thermostat setting.
  • Sensor location and whether it was near a supply jet or draft.
  • Time of day and the period over which the reading was observed.

Shared HVAC systems can connect conditions across rooms. A change in another zone, a central-air schedule, or a recirculation setting can alter your measurement even when the local door and window positions have not changed.

Interpret the numbers without treating them as a safety score

Use 800 ppm only as a possible baseline target

CDC/NIOSH identifies CO₂ readings below 800 parts per million (ppm) as one potential baseline concentration used to represent good ventilation. The same guidance warns that a single concentration may not be appropriate for every space and occupancy. Therefore, 800 ppm is not a universal legal limit, health threshold, or guarantee of low infection risk. Use it as a reference point while considering the room’s baseline and operating conditions.

A value above 800 ppm is not, by itself, proof that a room is dangerous. It is a prompt to ask whether the measured conditions represent normal use and whether outdoor-air delivery is adequate for the current occupancy.

Compare later readings with the room’s baseline

When ventilation airflow and occupancy capacity have not increased, CDC/NIOSH describes readings above 110% of the room’s baseline concentration as a potential problem to investigate. Calculate that comparison from the baseline for the same room and comparable conditions. Do not apply the 110% figure to a baseline taken in a different room, with different occupancy, or with windows and HVAC operating differently.

For example, if a meeting room’s baseline was established during ordinary occupancy with doors closed and the HVAC on its normal schedule, compare a later meeting measured under those same conditions. If the later session has twice as many people or an open window, the result is not a like-for-like test; document the difference before interpreting it.

Look at trends and recovery

A steadily rising concentration during occupancy can indicate that outdoor-air delivery is not keeping pace with the number of people. A concentration that falls after outdoor air is introduced provides evidence that the room responds to that change, but it still does not prove that all contaminants are controlled. A brief peak, a sensor disturbed by a draft, or a reading taken during a door opening should not be treated as the room’s normal condition without additional observations.

A practical measurement procedure

  1. Select the instrument. Use a calibrated, reliable portable CO₂ meter and read its operating instructions before the first session.
  2. Define the room and normal scenario. Decide which occupied zone you are assessing and what ordinary occupancy, door and window positions, and HVAC operation look like.
  3. Position the sensor. Put it in an occupied breathing-zone location away from direct supply airflow, exhaust, or window drafts. Record the location.
  4. Allow the instrument to stabilize. Follow the manufacturer’s stated setup procedure. Do not record an immediate value if the device has not reached its normal operating state.
  5. Log the conditions. Note occupancy, doors, windows, HVAC state, time, and any unusual event alongside the CO₂ value.
  6. Observe through representative use. Capture readings over the period in which people normally use the room, rather than relying on a single instant.
  7. Build the baseline. Repeat the observation when the HVAC is operating as intended and use the resulting pattern as the room’s reference.
  8. Repeat under comparable conditions. Compare future sessions with the same room, occupancy pattern, sensor placement, and HVAC and opening conditions whenever possible.
  9. Investigate persistent elevations. If readings remain elevated or exceed 110% of the established baseline under comparable conditions, check the measurement setup first, then investigate outdoor-air delivery and HVAC operation.
  10. Document the response. Record any change—such as increased outdoor air, a schedule adjustment, or added filtration—and measure again to see how the room responds.

What to do when readings stay high

First, verify the measurement

Before changing equipment, repeat the reading with the sensor in the breathing zone. Check for a supply-air jet, window draft, unusual occupancy, a changed door position, or a shared HVAC condition. Confirm that the meter is operating and calibrated according to its instructions. If the result changes substantially when you move the unit only a short distance, the room may not be well mixed; collect measurements from representative occupied locations rather than choosing the lowest display.

Review outdoor-air delivery and HVAC operation

Ask whether the system is actually bringing in the intended amount of outdoor air during occupied periods. Check schedules, fan operation, outdoor-air dampers, and controls through the building’s normal maintenance process. A CO₂ target cannot substitute for confirming that the ventilation system operates appropriately and meets or exceeds applicable code-minimum outdoor-air requirements for the building’s current use and occupancy. The relevant code depends on jurisdiction and building type.

If you need a definitive assessment, engage a qualified HVAC professional who will evaluate outdoor-air delivery, system operation, and conditions in occupied rooms—not merely read a wall display or replace a filter without checking compatibility.

Increase outdoor air where practical

When the building system permits it, increasing outdoor-air delivery is the direct response to a ventilation shortfall. Coordinate changes with the person responsible for the HVAC system; opening windows, changing controls, or increasing fan operation can affect comfort, humidity, energy use, pressure relationships, and equipment performance.

Add filtration when outdoor air cannot meet the objective

CDC building guidance recommends MERV-13-or-higher filters when possible, along with appropriately sized air cleaners. Confirm that the existing HVAC equipment can accommodate the selected filter: a higher-resistance filter is not automatically compatible with every system. A room-sized HEPA air cleaner can be an additional measure when outdoor air cannot be increased enough, but it does not remove CO₂ and is not a substitute for outdoor-air ventilation. Select a unit appropriate for the room and operate it according to its instructions.

Troubleshoot common misleading readings

The value is unexpectedly low

  • Move the sensor out of a supply-air jet or window stream.
  • Check whether the room was less occupied than usual.
  • Confirm that doors or windows were open when they are normally closed.
  • Compare with another occupied location if the room has strong air currents.
  • Review the meter’s calibration and stabilization instructions.

The value is unexpectedly high

  • Count occupants again, including people who entered during the measurement.
  • Check whether a door or window was closed when it is usually open.
  • Verify that the HVAC fan and outdoor-air controls are operating on schedule.
  • Consider whether a shared recirculating system or another zone changed operation.
  • Repeat the measurement at the same location under documented conditions.

Different locations disagree

Do not automatically select the lowest number. Strong mixing, supply jets, window drafts, partitions, and occupant movement can create real spatial differences or sampling artifacts. Map readings to the places people occupy and investigate the air pattern with the building operator.

How to use readings in schools, offices, homes, and meeting rooms

Classrooms and training rooms

Measure during a normal lesson or session, recording class size, door and window positions, and the HVAC schedule. A value from an empty room says little about the occupied period. If readings repeatedly rise during lessons, discuss outdoor-air delivery and scheduling with facilities staff rather than treating the monitor as a pass/fail device.

Offices and conference rooms

Conference rooms can change from empty to crowded quickly. Log the occupancy transition and observe how fast CO₂ rises and falls. Compare meetings of similar size and duration. A portable monitor can help identify rooms that need a ventilation review, but it cannot establish that a short meeting is risk-free.

Bedrooms and living areas

Measure during the periods people normally sleep or gather. Keep window and mechanical-ventilation settings in their usual state. If the room is served by a shared system, note whether the central fan or ventilation schedule changes overnight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small, crowded rooms

In a compact room with several occupants, placement matters especially because people may sit close to the sensor or to an air outlet. Keep the unit in representative occupied air, not directly in a person’s exhalation plume and not in a supply jet. Record the arrangement so later sessions are comparable.

Use a log that supports decisions

A useful log connects every number to its conditions. For each session, keep the room name, date and time, sensor location, occupancy, door and window status, HVAC status, observed CO₂ range or trend, and any intervention. Note whether the value came from a stabilized display or a logged time series. When you change outdoor-air settings or add an air cleaner, start a new comparison period and document the change.

Review the log for repeated patterns rather than reacting to one unusual value. Look for consistent rises during normal occupancy, consistent differences between rooms, and whether concentrations fall after outdoor-air changes. Preserve the original conditions so a later reviewer can tell whether two readings are genuinely comparable.

Limits that should change your decision

  • Not a pathogen detector: CO₂ cannot tell you whether anyone is infectious or how many airborne viruses are present.
  • Not source control: A room-average concentration cannot show whether contaminants are being removed near the person or process generating them.
  • Not a code inspection: Meeting a chosen CO₂ reference does not prove that a ventilation system meets applicable building requirements.
  • Not a universal threshold: The 800 ppm reference is one potential CDC/NIOSH baseline target, not a legal or health boundary for every occupancy.
  • Not proof of uniform air: Rooms may be poorly mixed, and a wall or ceiling reading may differ from occupied breathing-zone air.
  • Not a replacement for maintenance: The monitor should support, not replace, inspection of fans, dampers, filters, controls, and outdoor-air delivery.

A decision framework for everyday use

  1. Is the measurement credible? Confirm calibration, stabilization, breathing-zone placement, and the absence of direct drafts or supply jets.
  2. Are the conditions comparable? Match room, occupancy, openings, HVAC state, sensor location, and timing to the baseline.
  3. Is the pattern persistent? Repeat the observation and examine the trend instead of acting on one spot reading.
  4. Does the pattern suggest an outdoor-air issue? If comparable readings stay elevated or exceed 110% of baseline, ask facilities staff to investigate the system.
  5. What control is feasible? Increase outdoor air when the system and conditions allow; otherwise consider compatible filtration and an appropriately sized room air cleaner as complementary measures.
  6. What remains unknown? State clearly that the result describes ventilation under measured conditions, not infection risk or complete contaminant control.
