To use a ChatGPT Dot, first check that your account, region and workspace are eligible and that the gradual rollout has reached you. Then create it in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser, give it a clear goal and task-specific context, and connect only the apps or computer access it needs. Review its work and set rules for when it should act, ask you or hand a decision back.
What a ChatGPT Dot is
A Dot is a persistent agent feature inside ChatGPT, not a separate physical device. OpenAI describes Dots as agents that can work toward a project goal between conversations using a cloud computer and connected apps. Examples from OpenAI include preparing a presentation, creating content from an interview transcript and improving an app. A Dot can track progress, return results for review or ask you to make a decision. These are product descriptions, not guarantees about performance on a particular task. OpenAI Help Center
A Dot can continue work between conversations, and its profile can include scheduled or recurring tasks. You may also be able to message or call the same Dot through supported channels. Those ways of contacting it do not, by themselves, give it access to your other apps or computer.

Who can use Dots, and what to check if you cannot find them
OpenAI’s Help Center says Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro users over 18 in markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom; Business Premium users in supported ChatGPT regions; and Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare, when a workspace administrator enables the beta. Access is gradual and may take several days to reach an account. The rollout may not have reached every eligible account, and OpenAI has not specified here when other tiers will get access. - Check that you are signed into the intended ChatGPT account.
- If you use a work or school workspace, check that you are in the right workspace and ask its administrator whether the beta is enabled.
- Confirm that your account tier and market match the eligibility described by OpenAI.
- If you meet those conditions but still cannot find Dots, allow for the staged rollout; availability may take several days.
Where to create a Dot
As of the ChatGPT Learn update dated October 5–9, 2026, you can create a Dot in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser. Mobile web is not supported. An older Help Center article still describes creation as desktop-only and says mobile creation is unavailable, so its instructions may not reflect the newer rollout. OpenAI Help Center
- Sign in: Open ChatGPT using the account and workspace where you expect to use the Dot.
- Open Dots: Use the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser and follow the available onboarding flow. Do not use mobile web to create one.
- Name it: Choose a name that makes its purpose easy to recognize. You can optionally customize its appearance.
- Choose connections: Connect supported plugins or apps only if the Dot needs them. You can skip this during setup and connect them later.
- Describe the work: Give the Dot an outcome, the background it needs and the kind of updates or decisions you want it to bring back.
- Review activity: Open the Dot’s profile to inspect progress and results, then give any correction in the conversation for the relevant task.
How to give a Dot a useful task
State the result you want rather than asking it vaguely to “help with work.” Provide only the context needed for that task, such as relevant files, links, background and constraints. Say what a useful result should contain, how you want progress reported and which steps it may take without checking with you.

For example, if you want a Dot to prepare a presentation, specify the audience, purpose, source material, desired format and any facts it must verify. Tell it whether it should draft only, or whether it may also make changes in connected services. If an action requires your judgment, say that it should stop and ask.
Each task has its own conversation and does not automatically inherit every conversation you have had with the Dot. Include the necessary task-specific context each time. Open the Dot’s profile to see work marked In progress, Scheduled or Completed; review the result even when it is marked complete. Understand cloud work, apps and computer access
A Dot has its own cloud computer and browser, so cloud work does not require your personal computer to stay on. You can optionally connect a personal computer, but that access is separate: you grant it from the ChatGPT app on that computer, which must be online with the app open while the Dot uses it. You can revoke access. The Dot’s cloud browser has sessions separate from your personal browser. OpenAI Help Center
Keep three kinds of connection distinct:
- Messaging channel: A supported channel such as Slack or Teams can let you message the Dot. It does not automatically connect your inbox or grant computer access.
- Connected app: Services such as Gmail, Google Drive or GitHub use their existing account permissions. Check which actions are allowed and connect only what the task needs.
- Local computer: Access to your personal computer is granted separately; connecting a channel or app does not grant it.
Available apps and channels can differ by account. Check the options shown to you rather than assuming a particular connection is available.

Set boundaries, review work and pause or reset a Dot
Use the Dot’s custom rules to decide how it handles actions: it may act without asking, act after pre-approval, ask first or hand a step back to you. Rules help define your preferred workflow, but they do not override built-in safeguards or grant access to an app or computer you have not connected. Pause the Dot when you do not want it working; you can resume it later. OpenAI Help Center
Reset is more consequential than pausing: it deletes the Dot, its conversations, saved memories and scheduled tasks. Save any results you need and read the deletion notice before confirming.
