A ChatGPT Dot is a software agent you use inside ChatGPT—not a dedicated smart speaker. You create it in ChatGPT, connect only the apps it needs, then message or call it from desktop, the web, or mobile. Dots can work on delegated tasks and manage Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work, but they are not documented as general-purpose alarm clocks or always-listening room assistants. This guide shows how to set one up, use voice safely, schedule work, and review what it does.
What a ChatGPT Dot is—and what it is not
OpenAI describes a Dot as an agent that works through ChatGPT on desktop, the web, and mobile, with access also available through Slack and Teams. The launch material does not describe a required speaker, microphone accessory, or other dedicated hardware. Your phone or computer supplies the interface and, when you choose voice, the audio input and output.
A Dot can hold a conversation, ask questions while work is in progress, use its own cloud computer and browser, and work with connected apps. It may handle several projects rather than a single one-off prompt. You still remain responsible for approving sensitive or consequential actions: OpenAI warns, “Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work.”
Capabilities established in the launch material
- Message or call a Dot through ChatGPT on desktop, the web, and mobile.
- Delegate work that uses a Dot’s cloud computer, browser, and approved connected apps.
- Receive progress updates, questions, and decisions that need your attention.
- Review and edit Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work, including recurring tasks, according to the October 9, 2026 update.
- Set rules that allow an action, require your approval, or block it.
- Inspect work in Activity View and redirect or pause it.
Claims you should not infer
- A Dot is not presented as a physical smart speaker or an always-listening household device.
- The sources establish that you can call your Dot; they do not establish that a Dot can place ordinary telephone calls to other people.
- Scheduled Tasks do not automatically mean arbitrary alarms, kitchen timers, or every conventional reminder function.
- More than 4,000 apps is OpenAI’s description of the broader app ecosystem, not an independently verified count or a guarantee that every app is available to your account.
What you need before creating one
You need access to ChatGPT on a supported desktop, browser, or mobile app, plus an account and workspace eligible for the Dot rollout. OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 launch announcement describes the initial rollout as covering Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. It also describes an Enterprise beta that a workspace administrator must enable. The first Dot was included in Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost at launch; availability and entitlement can change, so check the current account and workspace notices.

Have the apps, files, or services for the first job in mind before setup. A Dot’s usefulness depends on what you connect, while its risk grows with every permission. Starting with one narrowly defined task makes it easier to test the result and remove access you do not need.
Create your first Dot
The setup route changed after launch. The original instructions used the desktop app or a desktop browser; an October 9, 2026 announcement says creation is now available directly in the ChatGPT mobile apps for iOS and Android as well.
Desktop app or desktop browser
- Open ChatGPT in the desktop app or in a desktop browser and start the flow to create a Dot.
- Give the Dot a name and complete the introduction prompts. Use a name that identifies its job, such as “Project updates,” rather than a vague label.
- Connect only the apps needed for the first outcome. You can add or remove access later through ChatGPT’s existing connected-app controls.
- Describe the desired result, the information it may use, and any boundaries. State whether it may act independently or must ask before changing, sending, purchasing, deleting, or publishing anything.
- Let the Dot introduce itself and explain how it will report progress or ask for decisions. Treat that explanation as a starting point, not as permission to bypass your rules.
iOS or Android ChatGPT app
- Update and open the ChatGPT mobile app, then use its Dot-creation flow.
- Choose a name and complete the introduction.
- Grant only the connected-app access required for the first task.
- Specify the result, limits, and approval points before delegating work.
- After creation, use the mobile ChatGPT app to message the Dot and, where the current interface offers it, start a voice conversation.
Because labels and controls can change between app versions, follow the current on-screen Dot and voice controls rather than relying on an old button name. OpenAI’s launch article does not establish a permanent, exact sequence for a call control.

Voice is a way to contact the agent through ChatGPT. It is useful when you want to think aloud, ask follow-up questions, give feedback while moving around, or discuss work without typing. OpenAI says users can message or call Dots on desktop, the web, and mobile.

A reliable voice workflow
- Open ChatGPT on the device you intend to use and select the Dot you created.
- Use the voice or call control currently shown by that ChatGPT app or browser. The exact label is not fixed in the launch documentation, so do not assume that a particular icon or phrase will remain unchanged.
- Begin with context: identify the project, the outcome you want, and the deadline or format that matters.
- Give one decision at a time. For example, ask the Dot to summarize an inbox, then ask it to propose replies, rather than granting a broad instruction to send messages immediately.
- When the Dot asks a question or requests approval, answer explicitly. If you need to stop or change direction, redirect or pause the work and confirm the new boundary.
- Review the resulting work in ChatGPT and in Activity View before accepting consequential changes.
Voice versus text

For a task involving names, amounts, account changes, or legal or customer-facing text, use voice for discussion and provide the final instruction in writing. That reduces ambiguity and leaves a clear approval record.
Use a Dot for everyday tasks without giving it too much freedom
A good delegation request contains five parts: the outcome, the source of information, the permitted tools, the boundary on actions, and the way you want progress reported. For example: “Review the project-status app, identify items without an owner, draft a list in ChatGPT, and ask me before changing any records.”
One-off task pattern
- Define the outcome. Say what finished work looks like, not merely “handle my project.”
- Name the sources. Identify the connected app, folder, conversation, or data set the Dot may read.
- Separate reading from changing. Permit research or drafting first; require approval before sending, editing, deleting, or publishing.
- Set a stopping condition. Tell the Dot when to pause, such as when information conflicts or a decision affects an external person.
- Choose a report format. Ask for a concise result, a list of unresolved questions, and links or records it relied on where available.
Useful everyday examples
- Ask the Dot to collect action items from a connected project workspace and draft, rather than send, a follow-up message.
- Have it compare notes from approved apps and prepare a brief for your next meeting.
- Ask it to monitor a project for changes and message you when a decision is needed.
- Give it a research question and allow read-only investigation, then review the cited material before acting on the conclusion.
- Use voice to explain a messy idea, then ask for a written plan with assumptions and open questions.
These examples use the documented ability to work with connected apps and report progress. They do not imply that every app supports every action or that the Dot can safely complete a sensitive change without your review.
Scheduled Tasks: what “reminders” currently means
The clearest reminder-related capability in the October 9, 2026 update is management of Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work. A Dot can review and edit those tasks, including recurring tasks. That is scheduled-task management inside ChatGPT Work, not proof of a universal alarm, timer, or standalone phone-reminder service.

Set up a scheduled task responsibly
- Tell the Dot the recurring or one-time outcome, the schedule, the time zone if relevant, and the source it should check.
- Specify what it should produce or message you when the task runs.
- Set approval requirements for any action that changes data or contacts another person.
- Ask the Dot to show the task details back to you so you can check the timing, scope, and connected app.
- Use ChatGPT Work’s Scheduled Tasks controls to review or edit the task later. If the task is no longer needed, disable or remove it rather than assuming it will stop on its own.
When to use another reminder method
Use your operating system’s alarm or calendar when you need a guaranteed audible alert, a timer, or a personal reminder that does not depend on a Dot, ChatGPT Work, a connected app, or an eligible account. The documented Dot material does not specify delivery guarantees, offline behavior, or every alarm and timer option.
Connect apps and set action rules
Connected apps determine what a Dot can see and do. OpenAI says permissions are managed through ChatGPT’s existing app controls. Grant the smallest useful scope, and revisit it when a task ends.
Permission checklist
- Connect only the app required for the current job.
- Check whether the app access is read-only or permits changes.
- Remove an app connection that no longer serves an active task.
- Do not provide a password or secret in a conversation when the app’s normal authorization flow is available.
- Keep sensitive actions—such as changing a password—with yourself.
Custom Rules
Custom Rules let you allow actions, require approval, or block actions. Use them as explicit guardrails rather than relying on a general instruction such as “be careful.” A practical rule set might allow reading a project board, require approval to edit a task, and block deletion or external messages entirely.

Monitor work in Activity View
Activity View is the place to follow delegated work. OpenAI says it shows the Dot’s activity and lets you redirect it. Check it when the Dot reports a decision, encounters conflicting information, or reaches a consequential step.
What to check before approving
- Whether it used the intended connected app and source.
- Whether its interpretation matches your instruction.
- Whether a draft has become an external action.
- Whether names, dates, amounts, and recipients are correct.
- Whether the task is still within its original purpose.
If the Dot begins moving in the wrong direction, redirect or pause it promptly. A polished summary is not evidence that every underlying action was correct.

OpenAI says a Dot’s cloud computer is separate from your own computer unless you choose to connect it. Connecting an app or service is therefore a deliberate access decision, not an automatic mirror of everything on your device.

For personal plans, OpenAI says users can control whether Dot conversations and work are used to improve models. Content from business, enterprise, and education workspaces is not used for model improvement by default, according to the launch material. Check your current data-control settings and your organization’s policy before connecting confidential information.

Plans, rollout, and usage limits
Launch-era access and limits have several qualifications:

Treat these as dated rollout and support statements, not permanent entitlements. Your market, plan, workspace administrator, and current product settings can change what appears in ChatGPT.
Troubleshoot the most likely problems
You cannot find Dot creation
Confirm that you are using an eligible account and market, then check whether your workspace administrator must enable an Enterprise beta. If you are following launch-era desktop instructions, try the current mobile app as well: mobile creation was announced on October 9, 2026. A missing control can also reflect a staged rollout or an app version that needs updating.

Review the connected-app permission, confirm that the requested operation is supported, and check whether a Custom Rule is blocking it or requiring approval. Narrow the request to a read-only step first, then add a separate approved change if necessary.
The result is wrong or incomplete
Use Activity View to identify the source and decision where the work diverged. Correct the instruction with the exact boundary, ask for a fresh result, and verify names, dates, amounts, and recipients yourself. Do not approve consequential work solely because the response sounds confident.
You expected a normal alarm or phone call
A Dot is not documented as an always-listening speaker, and the sources establish calling the Dot—not ordinary outgoing telephone calls. For alarms, timers, and guaranteed device alerts, use a dedicated calendar or operating-system feature unless your current ChatGPT interface explicitly documents the function you need.

The safest starting point is a small, reversible job: connect one app, ask for a draft or summary, inspect Activity View, and only then consider a recurring task or broader permissions.
