A BOOX tablet becomes a calmer writing-and-reading tool when you deliberately limit its home screen, notifications, and installed apps, then build your day around NeoReader and Notes. E Ink does not block distractions by itself: current BOOX models support Android and third-party apps, so the low-distraction result depends on the setup you choose. This guide shows how to configure that workflow, read and annotate in NeoReader, write beside a document, manage ghosting, and decide between current models without assuming that every feature works on every device.
What a low-distraction BOOX setup actually means
The goal is not to turn the tablet into a device that is technically incapable of interruption. BOOX documents Android and third-party app support on current models, which means the same tablet can host focused reading tools or a large collection of attention-grabbing apps. A low-distraction setup is therefore a set of choices: keep only the tools needed for the current reading or writing task, suppress avoidable notifications, and make the reader and note tools easy to reach.
The built-in workflow matters because it keeps related work together. NeoReader opens books and documents, provides selection and annotation tools, and can place a note beside the document. Notes provides a separate writing space. A file-transfer method gets the next document onto the tablet. Everything else is optional. This arrangement is editorial guidance based on the capabilities BOOX documents, not a manufacturer-measured concentration result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteE Ink also changes how the screen behaves. It is a reflective display, so pages remain visible without the same continuously refreshing backlight behavior associated with conventional LCD or OLED screens. BOOX’s E Ink documentation also describes ghosting: faint remnants of earlier content can remain after a page or interface changes. Refresh controls manage that artifact, but no setting makes an E Ink panel behave exactly like a conventional display.

Choose a model by the work you intend to do
Do not assume that a feature shown on one BOOX product page applies to every tablet. The official product information establishes the following differences between two current families:
| Model | Screen information | Operating system and app support | Front light | Stylus information | Keyboard or case decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Note Air5 C | 10.3-inch color screen | Android 15; third-party app support is documented | Included according to the product description | Pen3 compatibility is documented | Optional accessory; choose only after confirming the exact model and connector or attachment system |
| Go 10.3 (Gen II) | Screen details beyond the product family name are not stated in the cited product information | Not stated in the cited product information | Not stated in the cited product information | InkSense Plus compatibility is documented | Optional accessory; verify compatibility before purchase |
Choose the Note Air5 C when a 10.3-inch color display, Android 15, a front light, and Pen3 compatibility match your reading and handwriting needs. Choose the Go 10.3 (Gen II) only after checking its current product specifications for the functions you need; the cited information confirms InkSense Plus compatibility but does not establish the other comparison fields above. If you mainly type, a compatible keyboard cover can be useful, but it is not required for the NeoReader-and-Notes workflow. A case is likewise optional protection, not a prerequisite for focus.
Set up the tablet for one-task access
1. Update, charge, and learn the model-specific controls
Start with the tablet charged and running the firmware supplied for your model. BOOX’s official guide covers app management, display settings, and file transfer, while individual help pages document reader and note functions. Menus can change with firmware, so use the labels visible on your tablet rather than assuming that a path shown for another model will match exactly.

Before loading a large library, open the system settings and identify where your device controls notifications, display refresh, split-screen multitasking, and file transfer. Knowing those locations first makes it easier to recover when an app or document behaves differently from the built-in tools.
2. Make the home screen task-specific
- Keep shortcuts for NeoReader, Notes, and the file-transfer tool you actually use.
- Remove or group unrelated shortcuts wherever your model’s launcher permits it.
- Move social, shopping, video, game, and other optional apps away from the first screen, or uninstall them if you do not need them.
- Review notification permissions and disable alerts that are not part of the current writing or reading task.
- Return to the home screen and check that the next action you want—opening the current book or note—takes one deliberate tap.
This is a practical reduction of choices, not proof that the tablet improves concentration for everyone. Because BOOX tablets can run third-party apps, the owner controls how many escape routes and interruptions remain visible.

3. Prepare a simple file routine
Use the transfer method documented for your tablet to place the documents you are currently reading in a predictable folder. Keep the active set small enough that NeoReader’s recent-document list remains useful. When a project ends, archive or remove its files rather than letting every past document compete for attention. If you work across devices, decide in advance whether you will transfer files manually or use BOOX’s synchronization features; neither is mandatory.
Read and annotate in NeoReader
Open the document and set its display
Open the file in NeoReader and adjust the document display for its format. A reflowable text document may offer different controls from a fixed-layout PDF, and a scanned page may not expose selectable text at all. Change only the settings that solve a visible problem—such as text size, page layout, or contrast—so the reading surface stays predictable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Create useful annotations
NeoReader supports text selection for highlights, underlines, and annotations. Select the passage, choose the annotation type offered by your device, and add a short note that explains why the passage matters. A useful annotation records a question, an action, or a connection; copying a paragraph into a note usually creates more material to review without clarifying anything.
BOOX documents an annotation list and export options, but the exact menu names and available export formats can vary by model and firmware. After making a few marks, open the document’s annotation management view and confirm that the marks are visible there. If you need a copy outside the tablet, use the export command available on that device and verify the resulting file before deleting the original notes.
Review instead of constantly interrupting the text
Reading becomes less fragmented when you finish a section before reviewing every mark. Use NeoReader’s annotation list at a natural stopping point to revisit highlights and handwritten marks. If a document is part of a larger project, export or transfer the reviewed annotations after the session, not after every individual highlight. This keeps the reading surface focused while preserving the information you intentionally captured.

Write beside a document: two different methods
BOOX provides two parallel-reading arrangements, and they are not interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
NeoReader Split View: an associated note
NeoReader Split View places the document and a note in two windows. BOOX’s help documentation describes it this way: “Split View in NeoReader allows you to use two windows on a screen for multitasking, like reading, handwriting, and typing.” The note is associated with the document, which is useful when marginal thoughts belong to one specific book or PDF.
- Open the document in NeoReader.
- Choose the Split View function offered by your model.
- Select handwriting or text input, depending on whether you want to use the stylus or an on-screen or attached keyboard.
- Write beside the relevant passage, then return to the document when you are ready to continue.
- Use the document’s note or annotation management tools to review what was captured.
Split View, stylus handwriting, and AI Read support are not available on every BOOX model. If you do not see the function, do not treat its absence as a fault until you have checked the model and firmware documentation.
System Split Screen: a separate Notes document
Use the operating system’s Split Screen function when you want Notes to remain independent from the document. Open NeoReader as one app and Notes as the second app. This arrangement is better for a meeting record, a research outline, or a reusable journal page that should not be tied to one source document. The trade-off is organizational: the note is separate, so you must name and file it yourself.
Choose one method before starting a session. Switching between an associated note and a separate note halfway through a project can scatter your material and make later review harder.

Control ghosting with deliberate refresh settings
Ghosting is the faint residue of earlier content that can appear after a page turn, scrolling, or an app change. BOOX recommends choosing a refresh mode in EinkWise and optionally enabling Auto Full Refresh to manage it. The best setting depends on what you are doing: a mode that looks clean during fast scrolling may refresh differently from one chosen for still text or handwriting.
- Open EinkWise on the tablet.
- Choose the refresh mode exposed for your model.
- Read or write for several minutes and look for residue, flashing, or delayed updates.
- Enable Auto Full Refresh if the available control improves the balance between clarity and refresh interruptions.
- Recheck the setting after a firmware update, because available controls and behavior can vary by device and firmware.
Do not interpret a visible full refresh as a hardware failure. It is a normal part of managing an E Ink display. If text remains unreadable after a refresh, first return to the device’s documented refresh controls before changing unrelated reader settings.
Keep synchronization optional and verify exports
BOOX documents synchronization of reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, underlines, annotations, and handwritten notes across BOOX devices. That can be convenient when you alternate between tablets, but it should not be the only copy of important work. A focused workflow can remain local: keep the source files on the tablet, use NeoReader’s annotation management, and export material where the device supports it.
Decide what “finished” means for each session. For a reading session, it may be a reviewed annotation list. For a writing session, it may be an exported note or a file transferred to another device. Open the exported file once to check that handwriting, text, and page references survived. If synchronization is enabled, allow it to complete before switching devices, and retain a local or transferred copy of work you cannot recreate.

Before reading
- Put only the current document and the note template you need on the home screen or in the active folder.
- Set a refresh mode in EinkWise that you have already found comfortable for the document type.
- Silence notifications that are unrelated to the session.
- Choose NeoReader Split View or system Split Screen before opening the first page.
During reading
- Mark only passages you expect to revisit.
- Write short, specific notes rather than transcribing whole sections.
- Pause at a chapter or section boundary to review the annotation list.
- Use a full refresh when ghosting interferes with reading and let the tablet complete it.
After reading
- Review and name separate Notes documents so they can be found later.
- Export annotations or notes when the project requires an external copy.
- Transfer or synchronize intentionally; do not leave unfinished copies in several locations.
- Remove completed files from the active folder and restore the home screen to the next task.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
Notifications or apps keep breaking the session
Return to app-management and notification settings. Remove nonessential shortcuts, disable alerts that are not needed, and check whether a third-party app is running in the background. Because BOOX supports third-party apps, distraction usually reflects the selected software and permissions rather than an unavoidable property of the tablet.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Split View is missing
Check whether your model and firmware support NeoReader Split View. BOOX states that Split View and stylus handwriting are not universal. If the feature is unavailable, use system Split Screen with Notes when your operating system provides it, or read first and write in a separate session.
Annotations cannot be found or exported
Reopen NeoReader’s annotation-management view and confirm that the marks were saved to the expected document. Export using the option exposed by your device, then open the exported result to verify it. Menus and formats can differ by firmware, so a tutorial for another model may not describe your screen.
The page looks dirty after scrolling
That is usually ghosting. Open EinkWise, try another available refresh mode, and consider Auto Full Refresh. Expect some visual trade-off between faster updates and a cleaner page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm that the pen is compatible with the exact tablet. The Note Air5 C product information documents Pen3 compatibility, while the Go 10.3 (Gen II) information documents InkSense Plus compatibility. Do not infer that one pen standard works across the entire BOOX range.
A note appears in the wrong place
Determine whether you used NeoReader Split View or system Split Screen. Split View creates a note associated with the document; system Split Screen opens Notes as a separate app. Move or rename separate notes deliberately rather than expecting the reader to attach them automatically.
What this setup can—and cannot—promise
A BOOX tablet can consolidate reading, highlighting, handwriting, and typed notes on an E Ink device, with optional synchronization and third-party app support. Those capabilities make a low-distraction routine possible when you configure the home screen, notifications, and app list around one task.
They do not establish a quantified improvement in concentration, comprehension, productivity, or eye strain. BOOX’s general E Ink explanation describes reflective display behavior and ghosting, but the cited material does not provide an independent clinical measurement for those outcomes. Treat the setup as a controllable workflow, not as an automatic focus treatment.
