Yes. A purpose-built 13.3-inch color E Ink monitor can operate as a normal computer display when it has a video input such as USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI. The DASUNG Paperlike 13K, for example, accepts USB-C and HDMI, has a 3200×2400 native resolution, supports a nominal 37 Hz mode, and works with Windows and macOS. Connect it directly to a video-capable port, select the display mode in your operating system, and then verify the negotiated resolution and refresh rate.

What a 13-inch color E Ink monitor actually does

A color E Ink monitor is an external display, not a USB document reader. The computer renders the desktop, applications, text, and images; the E Ink panel shows that video signal. You can use it as an extended desktop, mirror your main screen, or make it the primary display, subject to the monitor and operating system’s supported modes.

The DASUNG Paperlike 13K is the clearest example covered here. DASUNG describes its display as a 13.3-inch Kaleido 3 color E Ink panel with a 3200×2400 resolution and 300 PPI. Its inputs include USB-C and HDMI, and the manufacturer lists Windows and Mac compatibility. DASUNG also advertises a nominal 37 Hz high-refresh mode. Those specifications describe the monitor’s capabilities; they are not an independent measurement of latency or motion quality.

This type of display is best matched with content that stays on screen long enough to read or edit: documents, web pages, terminals, code, email, spreadsheets, PDFs, and reference material. Fast video, animated interfaces, scrolling-heavy applications, and games require more caution because the usable refresh rate depends on the selected mode and the connection.

Check compatibility before connecting anything

The most important requirement is a video signal. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee one. The computer’s USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the USB-C cable must carry video. A cable intended only for charging or USB data will not produce a picture even though its plug fits.

  • USB-C connection: The computer port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the cable must support video transmission. DASUNG specifically warns that both the computer USB-C port and the USB-C-to-USB-C cable need video capability.
  • HDMI connection: Use an HDMI output on the computer and the monitor’s HDMI input. Check how the monitor receives power, because the video connection and the required power connection may be separate for the exact model and included accessories.
  • Operating system: DASUNG lists Windows and Mac support. For this model, DASUNG documents Linux as extended-display-only, so do not assume every Linux display mode or control is available.
  • Power: Follow the monitor’s included documentation for its required power connection. Do not assume that a laptop USB-C port, a dock, or an adapter supplies all the power the display needs.

If you are buying a cable or adapter, verify its video specification rather than relying on the connector shape. A USB-C hub can also change the result: some docks negotiate a different display mode than a direct connection, and a dock may not expose the highest refresh option.

DASUNG Paperlike 13K specifications that matter for monitor use

Specification What is documented Why it matters
Panel 13.3-inch Kaleido 3 color E Ink Provides a color electronic-paper surface in a compact monitor format.
Native resolution 3200×2400 Use this as the starting point when the computer and connection can negotiate it.
Pixel density 300 PPI Indicates the panel’s specified pixel density; it does not by itself determine text size or application scaling.
High-refresh mode Nominally 37 Hz Useful for judging whether a connection can support smoother updates than a low-refresh fallback.
Video inputs USB-C and HDMI Allows a direct USB-C or HDMI connection, provided the computer, cable, and power arrangement are compatible.
Operating systems Windows and Mac listed by DASUNG These are the manufacturer’s stated platforms. Linux has a separate limitation described below.
Linux behavior Extended-display mode only, according to DASUNG Plan to use the panel as an additional desktop rather than assuming every mirroring or primary-display workflow is supported.

DASUNG’s own product wording calls it “The Paperlike 13K Color Version” and says it has “the cutting-edge 13.3-inch Kaleido 3 Color E-ink screen, boasting an Ultra-HD resolution of 3200×2400.” That is manufacturer copy, not an independently measured test result.

Connect the monitor over USB-C

  1. Identify a video-capable port. On the computer, look for a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. The presence of USB-C, a charging symbol, or a USB logo alone is not enough.
  2. Use a video-rated USB-C-to-USB-C cable. Connect the cable directly from the computer to the monitor. If the cable is charge-only or data-only, the monitor can remain blank even when it receives power.
  3. Provide any required power. Use the power arrangement specified in the monitor’s documentation. If the display has a separate power input, connect it before troubleshooting the video signal.
  4. Wait for the computer to detect the panel. Detection can take a few seconds after the monitor powers on. Open the operating system’s display settings if the desktop does not appear automatically.
  5. Select an arrangement. Choose an extended desktop for a second workspace or mirroring if the E Ink panel must show the same image as the built-in screen.

A direct connection is the best first test. Add a dock, hub, or adapter only after the monitor works directly; otherwise you will not know whether a blank screen comes from the cable, the adapter, power delivery, or the monitor.

Connect the monitor over HDMI

  1. Connect the computer’s HDMI output to the monitor’s HDMI input. Use the monitor input selected in its on-screen controls, if the model provides more than one source.
  2. Attach the required power connection. HDMI carries video, but it may not provide all the power the display requires. Follow the model’s documentation rather than assuming the HDMI cable powers the panel.
  3. Open display settings and select the monitor. Configure it as an extended or mirrored display according to your workflow.
  4. Check the negotiated mode. DASUNG notes that some HDMI systems automatically fall back from 37 Hz to 27 Hz at 3200×2400. Record the actual refresh rate shown by the operating system instead of assuming the nominal maximum.

The 27 Hz fallback is not necessarily a fault. It means the computer, HDMI output, cable, adapter, or monitor has selected a lower supported mode at that resolution. If you need the higher mode, test a direct connection and a different known-compatible cable before changing resolution.

Configure the display in Windows

Choose extend or mirror

  1. Open Settings and choose System, then Display.
  2. Use Identify to determine which numbered display represents the E Ink panel.
  3. Open the multiple-display menu and choose Extend these displays for an independent workspace or Duplicate these displays to mirror the built-in screen.
  4. Drag the display rectangles so their physical arrangement matches your desk, then select Apply.

Set resolution and refresh rate

  1. In Settings > System > Display, select the E Ink monitor.
  2. Set Display resolution to 3200×2400 when that native option is available and usable.
  3. Open Advanced display for the selected panel and inspect the active refresh rate.
  4. If Windows shows 37 Hz, that is the nominal high-refresh mode advertised for the Paperlike 13K. If it shows 27 Hz over HDMI, the connection has negotiated the fallback described by DASUNG.

Keep scaling large enough for comfortable reading. A 300 PPI panel can make interface text physically small at 100 percent scaling, while a higher scaling percentage changes the size of menus and text without changing the panel’s native pixel count.

Configure the display in macOS

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings, then Displays.
  2. Select the E Ink monitor in the display list. If macOS shows an arrangement view, drag the display tiles to match their physical position.
  3. Choose whether to use the monitor as an extended desktop or mirror the built-in display. macOS exposes this through the display arrangement and mirroring controls, which can vary slightly by macOS release.
  4. Open the resolution controls and select the monitor’s native 3200×2400 mode when available.
  5. Inspect the refresh-rate control and note whether the connection negotiated 37 Hz or a lower value.

If the panel is not listed, disconnect and reconnect the video cable directly to the Mac, confirm that the USB-C port carries DisplayPort Alt Mode when using USB-C, and verify the monitor’s power connection. Test without a dock before changing several variables at once.

Configure the display in Linux

DASUNG documents the Paperlike 13K for extended-display use on Linux. The exact menu names differ among desktop environments, but the process is the same: connect the monitor, open the desktop’s display settings, identify the new panel, select an extended layout, and apply the native resolution if the system offers 3200×2400.

Do not infer from a successful Linux connection that every mode is supported. The manufacturer’s stated limitation is extended-display-only for this model. If your desktop offers mirroring, treat that as an environment-specific option rather than a documented Paperlike 13K capability.

Choose the right resolution and refresh rate

Start with 3200×2400 because it is the panel’s documented native resolution. Native output avoids unnecessary scaling by the computer, but it may not be available through every adapter or HDMI path. A lower resolution can be a useful diagnostic step if the image is blank, unstable, or reported as unsupported.

  • 37 Hz: The nominal high-refresh mode listed by DASUNG. It can make pointer movement and scrolling less limited than a lower mode, but it is still far below the refresh rates common on conventional computer monitors.
  • 27 Hz: A documented HDMI fallback at 3200×2400 on some systems. Use the operating system’s display panel to confirm whether this is the active mode.
  • Lower modes: If the computer cannot sustain the native combination, try a lower resolution or refresh rate temporarily. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which mode works.

Refresh rate is only one part of the experience. E Ink updates are visually different from LCD or OLED updates, and no independently measured response time, latency figure, or motion benchmark is established for this display.

What the display is well suited to

Reading and document work

PDFs, web articles, manuals, email, and long-form documents are natural uses because much of the content remains static while you read. A high native resolution gives the operating system room to render detailed text, although you still need to choose a practical scaling level.

Writing and office tasks

DASUNG positions the Paperlike 13K for typing, document editing, web browsing, and office or study work. An extended desktop can leave a document or reference page on the E Ink panel while the main display handles other applications.

Terminals and coding

A terminal, editor, or code review window is generally more suitable than a rapidly animated development dashboard because the important information is text and the screen often changes in discrete updates. Use an extended layout to keep reference documentation visible while editing on the primary display. This is a workflow recommendation based on the display’s documented suitability for text-oriented work, not an independently tested coding benchmark.

Reference and secondary-monitor duty

The 13.3-inch size can work as a compact second screen beside a laptop. Place stable reference material, a checklist, or a document there and keep frequently animated applications on the other display.

Where expectations need to be lower

Fast video and animation

Video playback, animated web pages, rapid scrolling, and games can look less fluid than on a conventional high-refresh monitor. The nominal 37 Hz mode and possible 27 Hz HDMI fallback describe signal-update options, not a promise that every animation will appear smooth.

Connection-dependent behavior

The same monitor can behave differently through direct USB-C, direct HDMI, a dock, or an adapter. Resolution and refresh choices are negotiated by the complete path. If a dock selects 27 Hz or fails to show an image, test the computer’s port and the monitor directly before concluding that the panel is incompatible.

Color-critical work

The panel is documented as a color E Ink display, but no independent color-gamut, color-accuracy, calibration, or professional-proofing test is provided for it. Treat it as a color-capable reading and productivity display rather than assuming it is suitable for color-critical design decisions.

Recover from a blank screen or wake problem

No image immediately after connection

  • Confirm that the monitor is powered and on the correct input.
  • For USB-C, verify DisplayPort Alt Mode support on the computer port and video support in the cable.
  • For HDMI, check both the HDMI cable and the monitor’s separate power requirement.
  • Open display settings and force detection or select the monitor manually.
  • Try a direct connection without a dock or adapter.
  • Temporarily select a lower resolution or refresh rate to determine whether the native mode is the negotiation problem.

Image disappears after sleep

DASUNG lists reconnecting the video cable as a possible recovery for manufacturer-specific sleep/wake signaling. Wake the computer, wait for the monitor to power up, then disconnect and reconnect the video cable. If this happens repeatedly, test a direct connection and note whether USB-C and HDMI behave differently.

Native 3200×2400 mode is missing

Check the entire signal path: computer output, cable, dock or adapter, monitor input, and power. HDMI systems can fall back to 27 Hz at 3200×2400. A missing native option can therefore reflect the connection’s negotiated capabilities rather than a defective panel.

Text is too small

Leave the panel at its native resolution and increase operating-system scaling or application zoom. This preserves the monitor’s available detail while making menus and text easier to read.

Phones and tablets are not a supported shortcut

DASUNG says the Paperlike 13K cannot be connected directly to an iPhone or iPad. Do not plan a mobile-device workflow around a USB-C cable simply because the phone or tablet has a USB-C connector. The stated computer compatibility and the stated iPhone/iPad limitation are different cases.

How to evaluate another 13-inch electronic-paper monitor

If you are comparing the Paperlike 13K with another electronic-paper display, compare documented capabilities rather than assuming that every 13-inch product has the same behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison point Questions to answer
Color capability Is the panel explicitly documented as color, or is it monochrome?
Resolution and density What are the native pixels and specified PPI?
Refresh modes What modes are listed, and do HDMI, USB-C, or adapters impose different limits?
Inputs Does it accept HDMI, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, DisplayPort, or another signal?
Operating-system support Are Windows, macOS, and Linux all supported, and are any modes restricted?
Front light or touch Are these features documented for the exact variant rather than a related model?
Portability and stand How is the panel supported on a desk, and can it be positioned for your setup?
Warranty and service What coverage and regional support apply where you live?

For context, Philips separately documents a 13.3-inch electronic-paper display with HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode/Power Delivery inputs. Philips’ documentation does not establish that this display is color, so its existence should not be treated as evidence of a color alternative or as proof that its specifications match the Paperlike 13K.

A practical two-screen workflow

  1. Connect the E Ink monitor directly by video-capable USB-C or HDMI and confirm that the computer detects it.
  2. Set the panel to 3200×2400 if that mode is offered reliably; then record whether the connection is running at 37 Hz or 27 Hz.
  3. Choose an extended desktop rather than mirroring when you want a document, terminal, or reference page to remain visible independently.
  4. Move static or moderate-motion applications to the E Ink panel and keep video, animation, and rapidly changing dashboards on the conventional display.
  5. Adjust scaling and application zoom for readable text instead of lowering the panel’s native resolution immediately.
  6. After the computer sleeps, verify that the image returns. If it does not, reconnect the video cable as DASUNG recommends for this wake condition.

This setup treats the E Ink panel as a specialized productivity display rather than a universal replacement for every monitor. It can add a high-detail, color-capable surface for reading, writing, coding, and reference work while the primary display handles motion-intensive tasks.
