To upload a YouTube Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer or the YouTube app on a phone, select a square or vertical video up to three minutes long, complete its details, check its audience and visibility settings, and publish. You can make the upload valid and improve its chances of reaching interested viewers, but no title, hashtag, posting time, or schedule can guarantee that a Short will go viral.
How do I upload a YouTube Short?
YouTube’s current Help instructions allow square or vertical videos up to three minutes long to be uploaded as Shorts. Choose the workflow that fits your device; either way, finish the details and settings before making the video public.
Upload from a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select a square or vertical video that is no longer than three minutes.
- Complete the video details, including an accurate title and the audience selection.
- Choose the visibility you intend to use.
- Review the copyright checks. If the video includes protected audio or footage added outside YouTube, make sure you have permission to use it.
- Publish when the details are complete. You can select multiple Shorts in the computer upload flow, but you still need to complete the details for each draft.
Upload from a phone
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create, then Upload a video.
- Choose a square or vertical video. Trim it in the editor if needed. If it is longer than three minutes, the mobile flow offers Edit into a Short to trim it to three minutes or less.
- Continue to the editor if you want to add text, filters, music, or other audio.
- Add a title and other details, choose privacy, and set the correct made-for-kids audience designation.
- Tap Upload. You can also upload through the YouTube Studio mobile app.
Uploading imports a file to YouTube; publishing makes it available according to its visibility setting. Use private or unlisted if you want to review or test a Short before sharing it publicly. A private or unlisted video is not publicly available in the same way as a public Short.

How long can a YouTube Short be?
The cited YouTube Help upload instructions allow square or vertical videos up to three minutes long as Shorts. For a longer video in the mobile upload flow, use Edit into a Short to trim it to three minutes or less. Check YouTube’s current instructions if you are uploading after the documentation changes, since platform requirements can change.

How do I make my YouTube Shorts go viral?
There is no reliable viral formula. YouTube says it does not favor a particular type of Short: recommendations are personalized and depend on how viewers respond, along with their interests and history. The system considers whether a viewer chooses to watch, ignores a Short, or marks it “not interested”; whether they keep watching; and satisfaction signals such as likes and post-watch surveys. These are factors in recommendations, not a promise of reach.
Reach can also vary with how much interest a topic attracts, how popular that interest is at a given time, competition from other Shorts, and seasonality. A video can perform well on its own metrics and still receive fewer impressions if competing videos perform better. Search is a separate way viewers may find Shorts: relevance to a viewer’s query and whether people click and watch can matter there. Trends and sounds can offer additional discovery routes, but neither guarantees distribution.

Make choices you can learn from
- Give the Short an accurate title and make its subject clear to the audience you want to reach.
- Study which Shorts your own audience chooses to watch and how long they continue watching. Use what you learn to shape future videos rather than assuming one format works for everyone.
- Choose a posting schedule you can sustain. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for a video to perform well; daily uploads or a particular posting time are not guaranteed advantages.
- Use a phone if that is what you have. YouTube says no special equipment is needed to get started. A phone tripod may help steady hands-free filming, but it is optional and is not a ranking factor established by the guidance.
Does posting every day help Shorts go viral?
YouTube does not require a minimum posting frequency for Shorts to perform well. Posting daily is therefore not a guaranteed route to virality. A sustainable schedule that leaves room to make videos your audience wants to watch is a more useful starting point than chasing a fixed posting streak.

Interpret the metrics in context. YouTube changed the Shorts view definition on March 31, 2025: a view now counts each time a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time threshold. The former Shorts views measure remains in Analytics as Engaged views, which measures viewers who chose to continue watching. YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing continue to use Engaged Shorts views.

Because the view definition changed, raw views are not directly equivalent to the former measure of people who chose to keep watching. To compare creative performance, look at Engaged views alongside viewer-retention context, including average view duration and average percentage viewed. Also consider whether viewers chose to watch rather than ignore the video, and satisfaction signals. These measures describe different parts of audience response; none alone guarantees future reach.

What should I check before publishing?
- Format and length: square or vertical, and no longer than three minutes under the cited upload guidance.
- Title and details: accurately describe the Short and are complete.
- Audience: the made-for-kids setting is correct.
- Visibility: public, unlisted, or private matches who should be able to watch during review and after publishing.
- Rights: protected audio or video used in a video made elsewhere is cleared for use. Copyright checks are useful, but do not assume they settle every rights question.
- Expectations: a successful upload makes the Short available as intended; it does not guarantee recommendations or a viral outcome.
