To move a Windows PC world to a Space Engineers dedicated server, stop the destination server, copy the complete save folder from %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamID><WorldName>, and upload that folder to the server’s configured Saves directory. Start the server only after the folder name and configuration agree. Never upload only an individual .sbs file, and make a backup before replacing an existing server world.
What this transfer actually does
A Space Engineers world is a folder containing the terrain, grids, characters, settings, and references to any mods used by that save. A dedicated server reads that folder when it starts. You are migrating the complete folder, not exporting a map file.
This procedure applies to a world created on Space Engineers for Windows PC and a dedicated server that you can access through its files. A self-managed server normally uses the dedicated-server installation’s Saves directory. A managed provider generally exposes the same directory through a control panel, file manager, FTP, or SFTP. Console hosting and provider-specific Xbox workflows are not established by the available documentation, so do not assume the Windows paths below exist on those platforms.
Before you start
Check the access you have
- Local save access: You need access to the Windows PC on which the world was created or last saved.
- Server file access: For a self-hosted server, you need access to the machine’s files. For a managed server, you need the provider’s file manager or FTP/SFTP credentials.
- Administrative control: You must be able to stop and start the destination server. Overwriting a live save risks corruption and can leave an old process holding files open.
- Compatible software: The server should run a compatible Space Engineers version and have access to the mods referenced by the world.
Understand what will be replaced
If the destination already has a world, uploading a folder with the same name can replace its progress. Treat the operation as a restore or migration, not as an additive copy. Players, faction ownership, inventories, blueprints stored in the world, and world settings come from the uploaded save; anything created only in the previous server copy is absent unless you preserve and merge it separately.

Back up both sides first
Make two backups: the local source and the current server world. Stop the server before copying its files. Put each backup in a separate location with a date in the folder name so you can identify the pre-migration state.
Keen Software House’s backup guidance notes that Steam Cloud does not save Space Engineers worlds. Back up the relevant local Saves folder yourself. You can also publish a world to the Steam Workshop as private or unlisted when you need an additional, shareable copy; that is a backup option, not a substitute for retaining the original files.

- Copy the existing server world folder to storage outside the server’s active
Savesdirectory. - Copy the local source world folder before making any edits or renaming it.
- Record the original folder names, the server configuration’s world name, and the active mod list.
An external drive is optional; any storage location that is not being overwritten during the migration is sufficient.
Find the complete local world folder
- On Windows, open File Explorer and enter
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSavesin the address bar. - Open the folder named with your numeric Steam ID.
- Open the folder whose name matches the world you want to upload.
- Verify that you are looking at the world folder itself, not merely its parent Steam-ID folder.
A normal world folder commonly includes files such as SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs, Sandbox.sbc, and Sandbox_config.sbc. It may also contain additional save data and folders. The exact contents vary with the game version and the world, so do not delete files simply because their names differ from this example.

If the folder is missing, check that you are using the same Windows account that created the world and that the game has been run and the world saved locally. A cloud-synchronized game profile does not guarantee that the world exists in the server’s file system.
Upload to a self-managed dedicated server
On a self-managed installation, the conventional destination is %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves. The actual location can differ if you created a separate instance, changed the Windows account running the service, or selected another data path. Use the instance’s configured path rather than assuming the default.

- Stop the dedicated server. Confirm that the process has ended before touching the save.
- Open the active Saves directory. Navigate to the
Savesfolder belonging to the server instance that will load the world. - Preserve the old world. Rename the existing world folder with a date or move it to your backup location. Do not delete it until the new world has loaded successfully.
- Copy the entire source folder. Copy the folder from
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamID><WorldName>into the server’sSavesdirectory. Keep the folder one level belowSaves; do not place its files directly inSaves, and do not create an accidental second nested copy. - Check the configured name. Open the dedicated-server configuration and confirm which world folder name it is set to load. If your installation uses a configuration entry for the world name, it must correspond to the uploaded folder according to that installation’s convention.
- Start the server. Watch the startup log for the expected world name and for errors about missing files, mods, or permissions.
Keen’s dedicated-server guidance describes this operation as copying a previously saved world from AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineers to the corresponding dedicated-server folder. The dedicated-server wiki likewise identifies the server’s Saves directory as the source from which saved worlds are loaded.
Upload through a managed hosting panel or FTP
Provider interfaces differ, but the file operation is the same. Use the provider’s documented path and naming convention instead of assuming that the self-hosted Windows path is visible.

- Stop the server in the control panel. Wait for a fully stopped state, not merely a restart countdown.
- Open the server’s configuration files. Many current hosting layouts expose the save location as
/config/Saves/; your provider may use another path. - Back up the existing folder. Download it through the file manager or FTP/SFTP, or rename it on the server if the panel allows that.
- Remove or move the old world only after the backup completes. Deleting first removes your easiest rollback path.
- Upload the local world folder as a folder. Transfer all files and subfolders. Large saves can take time; wait for the client to report completion for every file.
- Apply the provider’s required folder name. Some managed procedures require the uploaded folder to be named
World. Other hosts load the name specified inSpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. Rename the folder or edit the configuration only according to the host’s documented convention. - Start the server and inspect the console. Confirm that it loads the intended world rather than generating a new one.
Uploading through FTP/SFTP can preserve the folder hierarchy more reliably than dragging individual files in a browser. If you use a web file manager, verify that the result is Saves/World/<save files> (or the provider’s equivalent), not Saves/<save files> and not Saves/World/World/<save files>.
Folder names and dedicated-server configuration
The save folder’s name and the server’s configured world name are separate pieces of information that often must agree. A host may hard-code World, while another reads the directory named by World Name in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. When mods are installed, provider documentation specifically warns that this configuration value may need to match the uploaded folder name.
- Write down the exact capitalization and spacing of the uploaded folder name.
- Check for a configuration field such as
World Namebefore the first launch. - Do not rename the folder after editing the configuration unless you update both sides together.
- If the server generates a fresh world, stop it before making another change; repeated starts can create additional files that make diagnosis harder.
Verify the first launch
Join only after the server reports that loading has completed. Verify the migration in a deliberate order:
- World identity: Check the world name, seed or recognizable terrain, and a known landmark or grid.
- Player and faction data: Confirm that the expected player identity, ownership, faction membership, and spawn points are present.
- Settings: Check inventory and assembler/refinery speeds, environment settings, experimental mode, progression, and any other values that matter to your group.
- Content: Inspect a few known ships, stations, inventories, and saved blueprints.
- Mods: Confirm that every required mod is enabled and that no missing-mod warning appears.
- Persistence: Make a small harmless change, exit normally, restart the server, and verify that the change remains.
Keep the old server backup until this checklist passes. A server that starts is not necessarily a server that loaded the intended save.

Troubleshoot a world that will not load
The server creates a new or blank world
- Stop the server immediately so it does not overwrite the state you intended to preserve.
- Confirm that the uploaded folder is inside the active
Savesdirectory for the correct server instance. - Check the folder level. The save files must be directly inside the world folder, not one directory deeper.
- Compare the folder name with the server’s configured world name or required name such as
World. - Make sure you uploaded the complete folder rather than only
SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs. - Review the startup log for a path, permission, parsing, or missing-mod error.
The save loads but progress or ownership is wrong
You may have selected a different folder with a similar name, or the server may still be pointing at its previous world. Stop the server, compare the timestamps and recognizable files in both copies, and verify the configured path. Do not attempt to merge two live worlds by copying individual .sbs files; restore the known-good complete backup instead.
Mods prevent startup or objects are missing
A world stores references to its mods, but the server still needs to download or otherwise provide compatible versions. Compare the local world’s mod list with the server configuration. Check that the server can reach its mod source and that the installed game version supports those mods. Remove or replace a mod only after backing up the save, because removing content can permanently alter or delete dependent blocks.
The configuration appears to reset
Sandbox_config.sbc contains world-level settings, while the dedicated-server configuration controls how the server instance starts and which world it selects. Inspect both after the first launch. If a provider supplies a control-panel setting that regenerates the configuration file, make the change in that panel rather than editing a file that will be overwritten on restart.
The upload is incomplete
Interrupted FTP or browser uploads can leave a folder that looks present but lacks critical files. Compare file counts and sizes with the local source, retry the transfer while the server is stopped, and wait for the client to report completion. For a very large save, use a resumable FTP/SFTP client when the provider supports it.

Permission or access errors appear
On a self-managed server, the Windows account running the dedicated-server process must be able to read the save directory and write its logs and updated save files. On a managed host, use the provider’s file tools rather than changing permissions you do not control. An incorrect instance path can look like a permission problem because the server is reading a different directory.

A player-hosted world is different from a dedicated server: the player-hosted session normally stops when its host exits, whereas a dedicated server runs as a separate service. Uploading a save changes where that world runs; it does not turn a local session into a synchronized copy automatically. After the migration, choose one authoritative server copy and avoid continuing to play an old local copy unless you plan another deliberate transfer.
Safe rollback procedure
- Stop the server.
- Move the failed uploaded folder out of the active
Savesdirectory, preserving it for diagnosis. - Restore the pre-migration server folder from your backup with its original expected name.
- Restore the matching world-name configuration if you changed it.
- Start the server and verify the restored world before attempting another upload.
If the original server world was overwritten without a backup, there is no guaranteed file-level undo. A private or unlisted Workshop copy, when one was made beforehand, may provide another recovery source, but it should not be treated as a complete substitute for a local backup.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload only the .sbs file?
No. The world is represented by a folder and its associated files, including configuration and other save data. Upload the complete folder and preserve its hierarchy.
Will Steam Cloud restore this world for me?
Do not rely on it. Keen’s backup guidance states that Steam Cloud does not save Space Engineers worlds. Keep your own copy of the local Saves folder.
Should I keep playing the local world after uploading it?
Only if you understand that the local and server copies will diverge. Decide which copy is authoritative; otherwise a later upload can overwrite newer server progress with an older local state.
Is this method valid for console worlds?
The documented paths and file-copy workflow are for Windows PC saves and dedicated servers. Console and Xbox hosting implementations can use different storage and transfer systems, so obtain platform-specific instructions from the relevant service.
