You cannot upload an Xbox Game Pass save directly to a normal Abiotic Factor dedicated server. Game Pass uses Xbox/Microsoft Store container data, while a dedicated server expects the Steam-style world files and header data. The dependable process is: back up the complete wgs folder, convert the profile, place the converted world in the server’s save location (or use a host panel that performs the conversion), then verify the world and every player before deleting your backup.

The steps below cover both a managed-server import and command-line self-hosting. Paths can vary with your Windows drive, Microsoft account, package installation and hosting provider, so preserve the folder structure exactly rather than copying only files that look familiar.

What you need before migrating

Prepare the save and the destination before making any changes. A migration can be repeated safely only if the original Xbox data remains untouched.

  • An installed Xbox Game Pass/Microsoft Store copy of Abiotic Factor containing the world you want to move.
  • A dedicated-server destination, either a managed hosting panel with Game Pass import support or a self-hosted server installation.
  • Enough free storage for the original wgs folder, a compressed copy and the converted world.
  • For command-line conversion, the x64 .NET Runtime 8.0, which the AbioticSavePlatformConverter documentation lists as a prerequisite.
  • A separate backup location, such as another internal drive or a USB flash drive. A removable copy protects you if cloud synchronization or a failed conversion changes the working folder.

Close Abiotic Factor and the Xbox app before copying anything. Let the Xbox cloud status finish synchronizing first. The Abiotic Editor documentation warns that offline editing of Game Pass saves is highly experimental: cloud sync can undo edits, hide a world or leave it unable to load. Treat the untouched copy as your rollback point.

Managed panel or self-hosted conversion?

Both routes convert the same Xbox container data, but they place responsibility in different hands.

Decision point Managed-host panel import Command-line self-hosting
Manual file handling Upload a zip, unarchive it in the panel’s designated folder and set the world name. The provider’s startup process performs conversion. Find the Xbox profile, run the converter, inspect its output and copy or configure the resulting world for your server.
Control over files and naming Limited to the panel’s folder layout and startup settings. Full control over output location, server files and the world directory you select.
Backup and rollback Keep your local untouched wgs archive; panel backups depend on the provider. Keep the original archive and each converted output so you can restore a known-good server world.
Compatibility risk Provider automation may be updated independently of the game. You choose the converter version and can repeat conversion after a game or save-format update.
Best fit Players who want the fewest server-side operations. Administrators who need direct access to files, logs and startup configuration.

A managed import is not a different save format; it is automation around the same conversion requirement. If a panel does not explicitly document Game Pass importing, assume a Steam-folder upload procedure will not work.

For a managed destination, Godlike.Host lists Abiotic Factor game servers with its own game panel; confirm that the current service supports Xbox Game Pass conversion before uploading. Not on the Abiotic Factor dedicated server wiki’s list of Verified Server Providers (github.com/DFJacob/AbioticFactorDedicatedServer, 10 Oct 2026).

Back up the complete Game Pass save

1. Finish cloud synchronization

  1. Exit Abiotic Factor.
  2. Exit the Xbox app and wait until any pending cloud synchronization has completed.
  3. Do not launch the game again while you are copying or converting the save. A new launch can write a newer cloud state over your local files.

2. Copy the entire wgs folder

Copy the whole wgs directory, including every nested account, profile and world item, to a separate location. Do not rename individual files or select only the directory that appears to contain your world. Keep the original in place and work from a duplicate. A dated archive such as AbioticFactor-wgs-before-conversion makes rollback unambiguous.

If you use a USB flash drive, eject it safely after copying and do not format or reuse it until the server has been tested. The drive provides storage for the backup; it does not perform conversion.

Find the Xbox Game Pass save folder

The usual Microsoft Store location is:

%LOCALAPPDATA%Packages<AbioticFactor package>SystemAppDatawgs<account id>_<id>

Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages into File Explorer’s address bar, then locate the Abiotic Factor package. The package name is installation-dependent. BisectHosting’s example is:

PlayStack.AbioticFactor_3wcqaesafpzfy

Inside SystemAppDatawgs, the account directory usually combines an account identifier and another identifier separated by an underscore. Do not assume that directory name is your Windows user name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some installations instead expose the data under an XboxGames path:

<drive>:XboxGamesGameSavewgs<account id>_<id>

Use the location that actually contains your current profile and world. If both locations exist, compare their modification times only after closing the game and allowing synchronization to finish; copying an older, empty or partially synchronized folder is a common reason a converted world appears to be missing.

Why a direct server upload fails

Steam and dedicated-server saves are loose files organized with server-compatible headers. Game Pass saves are Xbox/Microsoft Store containers. CrystalFerrai’s converter documentation explains that the Xbox format must be parsed and converted because it does not include the Steam header data expected by the dedicated-server format.

Consequently, a tutorial that tells you to upload a Steam save folder, rename a world directory or drop the Game Pass files directly into a server’s SaveGames path is describing a different input. Generic Steam-only procedures published by Game Host Bros and GhostCap cannot transfer a Game Pass save without an additional conversion step. The reliable rule is Game Pass container first, Steam/dedicated-server files second, server upload third.

Route A: import through a managed hosting panel

Panel labels differ, but the documented BisectHosting workflow (published March 2, 2026) illustrates the sequence. Follow your provider’s current instructions if its folder name or controls differ.

  1. Stop the server. Do not upload or replace save data while the server process is running. A running process can hold files open or write an empty world over your import.
  2. Compress the backed-up Xbox data. Create a zip containing the required wgs data, preserving its internal folders. Zip the copy, not the untouched backup.
  3. Upload the zip to the panel’s GamePassSaves location. This folder is part of the provider’s documented importer workflow; it is not a universal folder name for every host.
  4. Unarchive the upload. Use the panel’s file manager or extraction control. Check that extraction did not add an unwanted extra directory level, such as GamePassSaveswgswgs....
  5. Set the startup World Name. Enter the world name required by the panel after extraction. Use the name shown by the importer or its instructions rather than guessing from the zip filename.
  6. Start the server once. The panel performs the Game Pass conversion during startup. Watch the console for completion or an explicit conversion error.
  7. Join and verify the imported world. Do not overwrite your local backup until the world, base, progression and player data have all been checked.

This automation is provider-specific. A host that offers only a Steam save upload has not necessarily implemented the Xbox parser. Ask for explicit Game Pass-to-dedicated-server support before uploading a valuable save.

Route B: convert and self-host with AbioticSavePlatformConverter

CrystalFerrai’s AbioticSavePlatformConverter is a command-line program that converts Abiotic Factor saves from the Xbox/Microsoft Store version to the Steam/dedicated-server version.

Install the required runtime

Install the x64 .NET Runtime 8.0 before launching the converter. The runtime architecture matters: use the x64 prerequisite listed by the converter, not an unrelated runtime version or an x86-only installation.

Discover the available profile

Open a terminal in the converter’s directory and run its profile-discovery option:

AbioticSavePlatformConverter --find

The command is intended to locate profiles in the Xbox save data. Record the profile identifier it reports. If no profile is found, return to the path section: the converter may be pointed at the wrong installation, the game may still be open, or cloud synchronization may not have finished.

Convert the selected profile

Run the converter with the profile identifier and a separate output directory:

AbioticSavePlatformConverter --profile <id> --out <folder>

Replace <id> with the identifier returned by --find and <folder> with a new, empty destination. Keeping output separate from the original wgs tree makes it possible to repeat the conversion without damaging your source.

AbioticFactorSavedSaveGamesServerWorlds

Use the output produced by your converter version and configure the server to load that converted world. Preserve the directory hierarchy the converter creates; moving only a few visible files can discard the header or player records that made the conversion successful. If your server installation uses a different root drive or instance directory, mirror the same relative SavedSaveGamesServerWorlds structure there.

Start the server and retain the source

Start the server only after the converted output is in place. Keep the original wgs archive and the converter output until you have completed an in-game check. If the first conversion fails, do not repeatedly run it over the same output; create a fresh output directory and review the error against the converter version and game update level.

Verify the migration before declaring success

A server that starts is not necessarily a correctly migrated server. Perform a deliberate checklist with the original owner and each regular player who can test their data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. World selection: Confirm that the intended world appears, not a newly generated blank world.
  2. World loading: Enter the world and move through more than the spawn area. A world that loads briefly and then disconnects may have an incomplete conversion.
  3. Base state: Check the main base, containers, placed objects and any important construction.
  4. Progression: Verify the expected quests, unlocks and other world progression.
  5. Player records: Have each player check their character, inventory and personal progress. A world can look correct while one or more player records are absent.
  6. Persistence: Make a harmless change, stop the server cleanly, start it again and confirm the change persists.
  7. Backup retention: Keep the untouched Xbox backup until every check passes and players have accepted the result.

Compatibility can depend on the Abiotic Factor game update, save headers, converter version and the hosting provider’s implementation. Record those versions with your backup so a later failure can be traced to a specific change.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Recovery action
The converter finds no profile. The wrong wgs path was selected, the game is still running, or synchronization has not completed. Close Abiotic Factor and Xbox, wait for sync, then check both the %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages...SystemAppDatawgs path and the possible XboxGamesGameSavewgs path.
The world disappeared after editing. Xbox cloud synchronization replaced the edited state or hid the world. Stop editing, restore the untouched backup, finish synchronization before another attempt and work from a duplicate.
The server starts with a blank world. The panel world name is wrong, extraction added an extra folder level, or the server is pointed at an unconverted directory. Stop the server, inspect the extracted tree, set the documented World Name and confirm the converted output—not the raw wgs container—is selected.
The server refuses to load the converted world. Incomplete conversion, incompatible game/converter versions or damaged source data. Restore the original backup, create a new output directory, repeat conversion with the required x64 .NET Runtime 8.0 and check the converter’s error output.
The base loads but a player’s data is missing. Only part of the profile was copied, or the converter/provider did not preserve that player record. Compare the complete source backup with the uploaded archive, verify that all nested profile data was included and contact the provider if its importer reports partial conversion.
The panel rejects the upload. The archive is in the wrong folder, still compressed, or the host supports Steam saves only. Stop the server, place the zip in the provider’s documented GamePassSaves folder, unarchive it as instructed, or use a host that explicitly supports Game Pass conversion.

Updates, rollback and future moves

Keep three items until the migration has been stable: the untouched Xbox wgs archive, the converted server world and a note of the game, converter/runtime and provider versions. If a game update or converter update introduces incompatibility, stop the server before experimenting and restore the last known-good converted world. Never use the live server as the only copy of a save.

For a second migration, repeat the same order: stop the current server, make a fresh backup, allow cloud synchronization to finish, convert into a new output directory and test before replacing the working world. This avoids confusing a new conversion problem with damage from an earlier attempt.

Key rule

Xbox Game Pass saves are not interchangeable with Steam server folders. Back up the entire wgs directory, convert the Xbox container with a Game Pass-aware importer or AbioticSavePlatformConverter, then upload or place the converted world. Verify the world, base, progression and every player before discarding the backup.
