You can upload an IPA to App Store Connect without using Xcode’s graphical uploader by running Apple’s iTMSTransporter command-line tool. Apple documents this workflow on macOS, Windows, and Linux. For Windows and Linux, the upload also needs an AppStoreInfo.plist file exported from an Xcode archive, so you may still need Xcode earlier in the build process.
What “without Xcode” means for an IPA upload
Apple’s Transporter app is a graphical uploader; iTMSTransporter is its command-line counterpart. Apple’s Transporter User Guide 4.2 documents app uploads through the command-line tool on macOS, Windows, and Linux. That lets you avoid the Xcode GUI for uploading, but it does not mean the IPA can be built without Apple’s toolchain or that all platform workflows are independent of Xcode.
In particular, Apple requires Windows and Linux uploads to include AppStoreInfo.plist, an export-description file generated when exporting an archive with Xcode. Apple’s archive export documentation describes the export files, including this plist when using xcodebuild. A practical workflow can therefore create the archive and export metadata on a Mac, then transfer the IPA and plist to a Windows or Linux machine for upload.

- Create an App Store Connect app record. Apple says to create the record before uploading a build. Follow Apple’s instructions for adding a new app.
- Have a prepared IPA. The command uploads an existing app package; it does not build or sign the app for you.
- For Windows or Linux, include
AppStoreInfo.plist. Export the archive with Xcode so the required metadata file is produced, then make both files available on the upload machine. - Set up Apple-supported authentication. The Transporter guide shows API-key arguments and a username-and-password example. Use credentials authorized for the relevant App Store Connect work, and do not put real secrets in scripts or commands that may be shared or logged.
- Check Apple’s current build requirements. Apple’s upload-builds page states that beginning in 2026 uploads require Xcode 14 or later and provides a platform-specific version table. Check that live table for the target platform and submission date.
Upload with Apple’s iTMSTransporter command
Apple’s Linux example uses -m upload for upload mode, -assetFile for the IPA, and the API-key options for authentication. Replace each placeholder with your actual values; do not publish or commit real credentials.
#1 Best Overall
/usr/local/itms/bin/iTMSTransporter
-m upload
-apiIssuer <issuer-id>
-apiKey <key-id>
-assetFile MyApp.ipa
-assetDescription AppStoreInfo.plist
Use the executable path for your operating system. Apple gives the Windows command as C:Program Files (x86)itmsiTMSTransporter.cmd; the Linux path above is Apple’s documented example, not a universal install location. Consult the Transporter guide for the supported command format and authentication alternatives.
The option for the app package is -assetFile. Do not substitute -f, which is not Apple’s app-upload option. On Windows and Linux, retain -assetDescription AppStoreInfo.plist and point the command to the exported plist. If the IPA or plist is elsewhere, use its correct path.

What happens after the upload
A successful transfer is not App Review approval or publication. Apple processes uploaded builds before they appear in App Store Connect. Once processing finishes, you can use the build for testing or select it for submission, as described in Apple’s build-upload guidance and App Store Connect workflow. The documentation does not establish a fixed processing duration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMac alternative: validate or upload with altool
On a Mac, Apple also documents xcrun altool --validate-app and xcrun altool --upload-app for validation and upload. xcrun is included with Xcode. Apple lists both Transporter and altool upload options on its upload-builds page. This is a command-line alternative to the graphical upload workflow, not a way to remove Xcode from a Mac-based toolchain.
