Upload the complete world folder to the server’s GeneratedWorlds location (or the host’s documented Data/Worlds directory), set GameWorld to that folder’s exact name, and set GameName to the existing save folder if you want to keep progress. Stop the server before transferring files and restart it after saving serverconfig.xml.
Understand what you are uploading
7 Days to Die treats a generated map and a playable save as related but different data. The generation map supplies terrain and world layout. The saved world contains the chunks, player progress, structures, claims, vehicles and other changes made during play. A custom map download may include only the generation data; a migrated server may require both that map folder and the matching save folder.
Generation map
The generation map is normally a directory named after the world. It belongs under a GeneratedWorlds directory on the machine running the server, unless the hosting panel documents a different location. The folder name becomes the value used by GameWorld.
Saved world
The save is stored separately in a Saves directory. Upload it when you are moving an already-played world and need to preserve progress. A server can start a new save on the correct map, but that new save will not contain the old players, buildings or explored chunks.

Why the distinction matters
If only the save is copied, the server may not find the map data. If only the map is copied, the server can create a fresh game with no previous progress. Treat the map folder and save folder as separate assets and identify both before changing the server.
Find the world on the original computer
Make a complete copy while the game and any local server are shut down. Do not rename files inside the world directory. Preserve the directory hierarchy, including subfolders and files that may not be visible in a basic file browser.

On Windows, generated worlds are normally under:
%APPDATA%7DaysToDieGeneratedWorlds<World Name>
Open File Explorer, click the address bar, enter %APPDATA%7DaysToDie, and open GeneratedWorlds. The directory immediately inside it is the value you will later use for GameWorld. Copy that entire directory rather than copying only selected images or region files.
Linux location
On a Linux installation using the default user-data location, generated worlds are normally under:
~/.local/share/7DaysToDie/GeneratedWorlds/
The leading dot in .local means the directory is hidden in many graphical file managers. Enable hidden files or use a terminal file browser. Linux file systems commonly distinguish uppercase and lowercase letters, so record the world directory name exactly.

Identify the save name
Find the corresponding directory in the local Saves directory. The directory name used for the save is the text that belongs in GameName. If you cannot identify the save, launch the local game only long enough to confirm which world and save are selected, then exit before copying.

- Open the host control panel or your server console and issue a normal stop command.
- Wait until the panel reports that the server is stopped. Some panels explicitly show
Server is not running!; do not upload while the process is still shutting down. - Back up the existing
serverconfig.xml, the currentGeneratedWorldsdirectory and the currentSavesdirectory. A backup lets you return to the previous world if the new configuration fails. - Check the host’s file-access method. You may receive raw FTP/SFTP access, a web File Manager, or a restricted directory browser. The visible root in a panel is not necessarily the operating-system root.
Uploading while the server is running can leave partially written chunks or cause the running process to overwrite the files you just transferred. Stopping first is part of the migration, not an optional maintenance step.
Choose the destination directory
There are two layouts in common use. The correct one depends on the server build and host panel, so use the directory that the host exposes for generated worlds.

Some control panels place the target at a path such as <Home>/Data/Worlds and hide upload controls until an Advanced Mode is enabled. Do not create a second, similarly named directory merely because it is easier to see. If the panel’s documentation identifies a specific world directory, that path takes precedence over a generic Linux or Windows path.
Keep the folder level correct
After uploading, the destination should contain the world directory itself. For example, if the world is named DesertCoast, the expected structure is GeneratedWorlds/DesertCoast/, not GeneratedWorlds/DesertCoast/DesertCoast/ and not a loose collection of files directly in GeneratedWorlds. Double nesting is a common result of extracting a ZIP file one level too high or too low.

Upload with FTP or SFTP
- Connect to the server with the credentials supplied by your host.
- Browse to the server’s
GeneratedWorldsdirectory, or to the documentedData/Worldsdirectory. - Upload the entire custom world folder. Keep all subdirectories and file names unchanged.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and check the client’s transfer queue for failed files.
- If you are preserving progress, browse to the server’s
Savesdirectory and upload the matching save folder there. - Compare the remote folder names with your local copy character by character. On Linux, check capitalization as well as spelling.
Large worlds can contain many files. A completed directory listing is more reliable than a single progress bar: verify that the remote folder opens and contains the same major subfolders as the local copy.
Upload with a hosting control panel
- Stop the server and open the panel’s File Manager.
- Switch to Advanced Mode if the panel hides upload or extraction controls.
- Open the documented world directory, often a
Data/Worldspath or a user-dataGeneratedWorldspath. - Use the panel’s upload control to transfer the archive or folder. If you upload an archive, extract it in the target directory.
- Inspect the extracted result and correct any extra nesting before configuring the server.
- Upload the old save folder to
Saveswhen migration of progress is required.
A panel may present a home directory that is different from the game installation directory. The fact that a folder is visible does not make it a valid map destination; use the path the panel associates with worlds for that particular server instance.
Configure serverconfig.xml
The server reads serverconfig.xml at startup. Editing the file while the server is running does not change the active world; save the file, then restart the server.
Set GameWorld
Set GameWorld to the custom world folder’s exact name. If the folder is DesertCoast, the entry must use that spelling and capitalization:
<property name="GameWorld" value="DesertCoast" />
Do not enter the full path, a ZIP filename, or the display name shown in a map description. The value is the directory name directly under the server’s world directory. The built-in alternatives are Navezgane and RWG; selecting either one bypasses your custom folder.

Set GameName
GameName selects the save on that map and contributes to the save name and decoration seed. To continue an existing game, use the save directory’s exact name:

If no matching save exists, the server may create a new save on the selected map. That behavior is useful for a clean start but does not restore an old base or player inventory.
Do not change RWG settings for a fixed custom map
WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize apply when the server generates a new random world with RWG. They do not replace a copied custom map and do not repair a wrong GameWorld value. Leave them alone unless you are intentionally creating a new random world.

Keep the existing XML structure intact. A misspelled property name, an extra character, or stray spaces in a value can prevent startup or cause the server to use a default. Make one change at a time and retain the original file as a rollback copy.

UserDataFolder controls where the server stores generated data. When it is not set, a Linux server commonly uses ~/.local/share/7DaysToDie/ under the server user’s home directory. Your host may expose a different home or mount point.

Community reports differ on whether every game build honors UserDataFolder for generated worlds. If the server log behaves as though the custom folder is missing even though the directory is present, verify the actual path used by the running process rather than assuming the setting moved the world files.
Use a separate configuration file when necessary
Some operators work around a user-data path conflict by starting the server with a separate configuration file through the -configfile argument. The argument must point to the configuration file that contains the intended GameWorld, GameName and path settings. The exact launch command is host-specific, so use the control panel’s documented startup-parameter field or the service definition rather than replacing the host’s entire command line.

- Save
serverconfig.xmland close the editor. - Start the server from the panel or service manager.
- Watch the startup console and log for the selected world and save names.
- Connect with a client and inspect the terrain, spawn area and known landmarks from the custom map.
- For a migrated save, verify one unmistakable item such as a player base, storage container or explored location.
Checking only that the server reaches an online state is not enough. A server can start successfully while loading a new default world, so compare both the map identity and an existing save feature.
Fix the most common failures
The server loads Navezgane or another default
- Open the uploaded directory and confirm it is inside the active
GeneratedWorldsor host-designatedData/Worldspath. - Compare
GameWorldwith the folder name, including capitalization. - Remove accidental double nesting such as
World/World/. - Check that the server is using the configuration file you edited. A panel may launch a different file or profile.
- Stop and start the server after every configuration correction.
A reported migration failure was resolved only after the world was moved into the correct directory and the names matched. The symptom was a fresh Navezgane world, not a file-transfer error.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backed-up
serverconfig.xmlto confirm that the edit caused the failure. - Inspect the changed lines for misspellings, added characters, unmatched quotation marks or malformed XML.
- Ensure that the configured folder actually exists on the server and is readable by the server account.
- Reapply the settings one at a time, restarting after each successful change.
The map loads but progress is missing
- Confirm that the old save folder was uploaded to the server’s
Savesdirectory, not only the generated-world folder. - Set
GameNameto the save folder’s exact name. - Check for an extra directory level created during archive extraction.
- Make sure you did not intentionally or accidentally point to a newly named save.
The files are present but the server appears to ignore them
- Check whether the host uses a separate instance directory or startup profile.
- Verify the effective user-data path, especially when
UserDataFolderis configured. - Try the host-supported
-configfilemethod if generated worlds are not being found in the configured location. - Ask the host which directory its current game build scans; paths and behavior vary by host and version.
Migration checklist
Use this list before allowing players to connect:
- The server is stopped and a backup exists.
- The complete custom world folder is on the server.
- The folder is in the host’s active
GeneratedWorldsorData/Worldslocation. GameWorldmatches that folder name exactly.- The old save folder is present when progress must be retained.
GameNamematches the save folder exactly.- Any
UserDataFoldersetting points to the path the running server actually uses. - The XML file contains no accidental syntax changes.
- The server was restarted after the file was saved.
- A client confirmed both the custom terrain and an expected saved-world feature.
Version and host caveats
Instructions for this game are not perfectly uniform across builds. Available guides span roughly weeks to about two years and describe older versions as well as current hosting layouts. Some hosts place pre-generated maps in the installation’s DataWorlds directory, while others scan a user-data GeneratedWorlds directory. Linux case sensitivity and panel-specific permissions add further differences.
Use the installed game version and your host’s current documentation as the final authority for the destination path and startup parameters. The concepts remain consistent: copy the world directory, preserve the save separately when needed, match GameWorld and GameName exactly, and restart so the server reads the changes.
