Treat Google provider 8.0 as a breaking-change migration, not a routine version bump. Inventory every Google resource, data source, alias, and beta provider in your modules; read the complete v8.0.0 upgrade guide; replace removed types and revise changed arguments; pin the exact provider release; run terraform init -upgrade in an isolated branch or workspace; and review the complete plan before applying it. The provider release page listed 8.6.0 as the newest release on October 13, 2026, so choose 8.0 deliberately for compatibility or a staged rollout rather than assuming it is current.
What changes when you move to Google provider 8.0?
Version 8.0 removes several resources and data sources and changes defaults, collection types, validation rules, and state representations. A configuration that worked on 7.x can therefore fail during planning, produce a large diff, or propose replacements after the provider is selected.
The exact impact depends on the resource types, arguments, provider aliases, and state in your configuration. The release guide’s inventory is comprehensive for the release, but the examples below are not a prediction that every plan will contain every difference.
8.0 is not the newest 8.x release
As checked on October 13, 2026, the official releases page showed 8.6.0 at the top, followed by 8.5.0, 8.4.0, 8.3.0, 8.2.0, 8.1.0, and 8.0.0. If a project specifically requires 8.0.0, pin that version. If your objective is simply to adopt the 8.x line, evaluate the latest approved 8.x version and its own changes instead of stopping at 8.0.0.

Decide whether 7.x or 8.0 is the right target
Remaining on 7.x while you assess the migration can be the safer short-term choice when the configuration contains removed resources, preview features, or an unreviewed state change. Moving to 8.0 is reasonable when compatibility requirements, an organizational rollout, or a dependency explicitly calls for that major version.
| Decision factor | Stay on 7.x temporarily | Move to 8.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Removed resources | Useful while replacement design is being prepared. | Every removed resource or data source must be migrated first. |
| Goal | Preserves the current major-version behavior while you investigate. | Meets a deliberate 8.0 compatibility target; it is not the latest 8.x release. |
| Plan evidence | Existing plan remains a baseline for comparison. | Requires a fresh plan and resource-by-resource review of diffs. |
| Preview features | May avoid an immediate beta compatibility review. | Requires checking both standard and beta provider guidance. |
| Change control | Defers breaking changes but does not remove them. | Introduces a major-version change that should be pinned and reviewed. |
Do not use “latest” as a substitute for a migration decision. A later 8.x release may contain fixes you want, but it is a separate selection with its own release notes. Compare the approved target, the resources you actually use, the plan produced by that target, and the rollout window your team can support.
Prepare an auditable migration baseline
Do this work before changing the constraint. Record the Terraform CLI version, current provider constraints, selected versions in the dependency lock file, workspace and backend, and the current plan or state snapshot required by your team’s change controls. These records let you distinguish provider-induced changes from unrelated configuration drift.
Inventory root and child modules
- Search every root module and child module for
google_*resources and data sources. - Search provider blocks for aliases, explicit
providerassignments, and bothgoogleandgoogle-beta. - Record the module path, resource address, provider alias, and whether the object exists in state.
- Mark any type that appears in the v8.0 removal list before attempting initialization.
A practical inventory worksheet can have one row per address with columns for module path, type, alias, state presence, replacement type, changed arguments, and plan disposition. Include data sources: they do not create infrastructure, but an unavailable data-source type can still prevent a module from loading or planning.
Do not inspect only the root module. A child module can select a provider alias or contain a removed data source even when the root configuration looks unchanged. Also check generated Terraform, reusable modules pulled from other repositories, and separate environment directories if your delivery process renders configuration before planning.
Read the versioned guide completely
Use the official Google provider v8.0.0 upgrade guide and release notes as the authoritative migration checklist. The Registry guide may require JavaScript to render; if it does not display in your environment, use the release page’s breaking-change excerpt and verify each affected resource against the live versioned guide before applying anything.
Establish a clean comparison point
Generate or retain a plan with the currently selected provider using the same variables, backend, workspace, and credentials you will use for the migration. Save the configuration revision and lock-file selection associated with that plan. Comparing the old and new plans is more useful than comparing only the final state, because it shows whether a difference began as a provider default, a schema conversion, or an intentional code edit.

BeyondCorp resources and data sources
The release guide removes BeyondCorp app connection, app connector, and app gateway resources and their matching data sources. It identifies google_beyondcorp_security_gateway and google_beyondcorp_security_gateway_application as replacement resource types for the affected app-oriented configuration.
Map each old address to the replacement model, then check names, parent relationships, and arguments. A replacement resource is not automatically a one-for-one schema match; expect to revise references and, where necessary, state addresses according to your team’s normal migration procedure. Review every output and dependency that referred to the old address, including module outputs and policy expressions.
IAP brand and client objects
Version 8.0 removes the IAP brand resource, IAP client resource, and IAP client data source. The release excerpt identifies the removals but does not specify replacement resource types for these objects. Do not invent a replacement block. Determine whether the object is still required, whether it can be represented by another supported resource, or whether the surrounding configuration should be redesigned before upgrading.

ML Engine model deployments
The google_ml_engine_model resource is removed. The guide directs ML deployments toward google_vertex_ai_endpoint or Vertex AI Model Garden resources. Review the deployment lifecycle, model reference, region, traffic settings, and any outputs consumed by other modules before selecting the destination. Treat this as a design migration, not a rename: verify that the destination models the same serving or registry behavior your workload needs.
Schema, default, and validation changes to inspect
Even when a resource remains available, its schema may produce a plan difference or reject a configuration that was valid on 7.x.
Argument constraints
- A BigQuery Data Transfer sensitive parameter changes from allowing at least one value to requiring exactly one.
- Cloud Run worker pool HTTP header names become required when headers are configured.
- SCIM tenant
claim_mappingis required when creating the tenant. secret_data_wo_versionis required whensecret_data_wois set.
Validate these conditions in configuration before running a full apply. A plan-time validation error is preferable to discovering the issue in a shared workspace. Check conditional expressions as well as literal arguments: a value that becomes non-null only for one environment can still trigger the new requirement there.
Write-only secret-version fields
The BigQuery Data Transfer write-only secret version and the Secret Manager write-only secret version change from integer to string. The release guide describes state migration for both. Review state-related diagnostics and avoid interpreting a type migration alone as evidence that the remote secret changed. Confirm that modules, variables, and validation rules pass the new string representation rather than coercing it back to a number.
BigQuery dataset collation
default_collation no longer has default_from_api. Explicitly setting default_collation to an empty string clears collation. Check modules that previously relied on the removed behavior and decide whether the desired result is an explicit collation or a cleared value. Make that choice visible in code so a future refresh does not reintroduce ambiguity.

Collection types and ordering
Cloud Security Compliance cloud_control_details changes from a list to a set. GKE logging and monitoring enable_components also changes from a list to a set. Set semantics do not preserve positional order, so remove index-based assumptions and review any expressions that compare or render these collections. A cosmetic reorder in a plan can be expected, but an expression such as var.items[0] has a different meaning when order is no longer part of the schema.
Compute service attachments and load balancing
Compute service attachment fields and collections change in 8.0. The default load_balancing_scheme changes from EXTERNAL to EXTERNAL_MANAGED for backend service and global forwarding rule resources. If the previous behavior is required, set the argument explicitly after confirming that the value is valid for the resource and intended API. Review dependent forwarding rules, health checks, and consumers before accepting a default-driven change.
Pin the provider before initialization
Provider versions have their own release cadence, separate from Terraform itself. Declare the intended constraint in terraform.required_providers rather than relying on an unconstrained selection. The version argument in an individual provider block is deprecated.

terraform {
required_providers {
google = {
source = "hashicorp/google"
version = "= 8.0.0"
}
}
}
Use an exact constraint when you must test precisely 8.0.0. A deliberately bounded 8.x constraint can be appropriate only when your change policy permits later 8.x releases and you have reviewed their release notes. Pin aliases and beta providers separately when they are declared. Every module should express compatible requirements; a root constraint cannot make an incompatible child-module requirement disappear.
The provider maintainers’ major-release guidance recommends pinning because a major version contains breaking changes. Commit the resulting lock-file update with the configuration so other operators and automation resolve the same provider package. Review the lock-file diff rather than replacing it wholesale, and make sure the selected platform packages are the ones your automation environments require.
Run the upgrade in a controlled sequence
- Create an isolated change. Use a branch, disposable workspace, or other controlled environment that cannot apply to production accidentally.
- Apply configuration replacements. Remove or migrate BeyondCorp and ML Engine types, resolve IAP design questions, and fix changed required arguments before selecting 8.0.
- Set the provider constraint. Add the intended 8.0 version to
required_providersand ensure every module’s provider requirements are compatible. - Initialize with upgrade enabled. Run
terraform init -upgrade. The Google provider does not upgrade automatically after you have started using it; this command tells Terraform to reconsider the selected package under your declared constraint. - Check initialization output. Confirm that the selected Google and, if applicable, Google Beta versions match the intended constraints and that the lock file changed as expected.
- Format and validate. Run your normal formatting and validation checks, then resolve schema and validation errors before planning.
- Generate a complete plan. Use the same variable files, backend, workspace, and provider credentials as the controlled environment. A partial module plan is not enough for a provider migration.
- Review every proposed action. Investigate replacements, deletions, unexpected default changes, collection churn, and state or schema diagnostics. Stop if the plan contains an unreviewed destructive action.
- Apply only after approval. Apply the reviewed plan through your normal change-control path, then inspect state and workload behavior.
Keep initialization, planning, and approval as separate checkpoints. Successful initialization only proves that Terraform selected and installed packages; it does not prove that removed addresses, changed defaults, or remote behavior are safe.
How to read the v8.0 plan
Start with the resource address, not the size of the diff. A changed collection order can be harmless when the field is now a set, while a changed load-balancing scheme can alter service behavior. For each difference, classify it as an intentional configuration edit, a state/schema migration, a provider default change, or an unexplained remote drift.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Plan symptom | Likely area to inspect | Action before apply |
|---|---|---|
| Resource type no longer recognized | Removed BeyondCorp, IAP, or ML Engine type | Migrate to the documented destination or redesign the dependent configuration. |
| Validation says exactly one value is required | BigQuery Data Transfer sensitive parameter | Leave one value and remove conflicting alternatives. |
| Header name is required | Cloud Run worker pool headers | Provide names for every configured header. |
| Missing SCIM claim mapping | SCIM tenant creation | Set claim_mapping before planning again. |
| Write-only version type or state diagnostic | BigQuery Data Transfer or Secret Manager secret version | Use the string representation and let the documented state migration complete; verify the resulting plan. |
| Large collection diff without item changes | List-to-set conversion | Check for ordering assumptions and confirm that membership, not position, is intended. |
| Backend or forwarding rule scheme changes | load_balancing_scheme default |
Set the intended scheme explicitly and confirm the resulting API behavior. |
| Unexpected replacement or deletion | Any resource with changed schema or identity | Stop, compare state and configuration, and resolve the address or argument mismatch before apply. |
For each replacement, identify whether Terraform is changing only its representation or will destroy and recreate a remote object. For each deletion, verify that the address is genuinely obsolete and not merely missing because a child module, alias, or conditional expression was edited. Ask the owner of the affected workload to review behavior-sensitive changes such as forwarding rules and Vertex AI traffic settings.

Using google and google-beta together
The standard google provider contains generally available features. google-beta supports preview features, which may have limited support and may not remain compatible across pre-GA versions. The two providers can be used together, but they are separate selections that must be inspected.
If any module uses google-beta, review its release page and beta upgrade guidance in addition to the standard provider’s v8.0 guide. Confirm which resources use each alias and ensure resource blocks retain the correct explicit provider assignment after refactoring. A resource silently switching from beta to standard, or the reverse, can look like an unrelated provider error when it is actually an alias change.
State, lock-file, and rollback considerations
Keep the lock-file change with the provider constraint and record the pre-upgrade state or plan according to your operational controls. Do not delete state merely to make initialization succeed. State removal can abandon Terraform’s knowledge of managed objects and turn a schema problem into an avoidable recreation or orphaning event.

Do not hand-edit sensitive state values unless your established procedures explicitly require it and you understand the consequences. If the plan cannot be made acceptable, return to the prior configuration and provider selection in the isolated environment, diagnose the specific resource or state issue, and repeat the migration with the required code changes. A rollback of the provider package does not automatically undo configuration edits or remote API changes, so treat any applied change as a separate recovery event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate after apply
- Run a fresh plan and confirm that only expected drift or no changes remain.
- Inspect state for migrated addresses, secret-version fields, collection values, and provider aliases.
- Check workloads affected by backend services, forwarding rules, Cloud Run worker pools, SCIM tenants, data-transfer jobs, and Vertex AI deployments.
- Verify that outputs consumed by downstream modules still resolve and have the expected type and value.
- Record the selected provider versions and any resource-specific migration notes for the next upgrade.
These checks validate your particular configuration; the provider documentation does not promise a risk-free migration or guarantee that every workload behaves identically after an apply.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 8.0 is latest. It was not latest on October 13, 2026; 8.6.0 was listed first.
- Running
terraform init -upgradewithout a constraint. Terraform may select a later release than the one you intended to evaluate. - Searching only root files. Removed resources often reside in child modules or are selected through aliases.
- Treating a list-to-set diff as harmless formatting. Set semantics can invalidate index-based expressions.
- Assuming replacement names imply identical schemas. BeyondCorp security gateway resources require deliberate argument and reference mapping.
- Ignoring beta usage. Preview resources need their own compatibility review.
- Applying because initialization succeeded. Initialization proves package selection, not that the configuration plan is safe.
- Deleting state to bypass an error. This can discard object tracking and create avoidable recreation or orphaning.
- Reviewing only changed files. Provider schema effects can appear in untouched child modules, generated code, and outputs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Terraform Google provider 8.0 the latest version?
No. The official releases page listed 8.6.0 as latest on October 13, 2026, with 8.0.0 among earlier 8.x releases. Pin 8.0.0 only when compatibility, rollout, or another explicit requirement makes that version the target.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the safest provider constraint for testing exactly 8.0.0?
Use an exact constraint in terraform.required_providers: version = "= 8.0.0". Commit the resulting lock-file update. A broader 8.x constraint can select a later release and should be used only when your change policy allows that.

Which resources are removed in Google provider 8.0?
The release guide removes BeyondCorp app connection, app connector, and app gateway resources and matching data sources; IAP brand and client resources and the IAP client data source; and google_ml_engine_model. BeyondCorp app configurations move toward security gateway resources, while ML deployments move toward Vertex AI endpoint or Model Garden resources.
Does 8.0 provide replacements for the removed IAP resources?
The release excerpt identifies the IAP removals but does not name replacement resource types. Do not guess. Determine whether the object is still needed, can be represented by another supported resource, or requires a redesign before selecting provider 8.0.
Will every 8.0 upgrade show a large Terraform plan?
No. Impact depends on the resources, arguments, aliases, and state you use. A plan may show no meaningful changes, schema migrations, collection ordering differences, default changes, replacements, or errors. Review it resource by resource rather than assuming the release examples apply to every configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should I handle a list-to-set change?
Review Cloud Security Compliance cloud_control_details and GKE logging or monitoring enable_components for index-based or ordering assumptions. Sets represent membership rather than position, so adjust expressions that depend on a stable index and confirm that any plan churn is only a representation change.
Can I use google and google-beta during the migration?
Yes, they can be used together, but they are separate provider selections. Map each resource to its alias, retain explicit provider assignments, and review the beta release page and upgrade guidance when preview features are present. Pre-GA features may have limited support or compatibility across versions.
What should I do if initialization succeeds but the plan proposes deletion?
Stop before applying. Compare the address with configuration and state, check for removed types, aliases, conditional modules, changed identity arguments, and default changes, then resolve the cause and generate a new complete plan. Successful initialization confirms package selection, not migration safety.
Can I delete Terraform state if provider 8.0 will not initialize?
Do not delete state simply to bypass an initialization or schema error. State removal can abandon Terraform’s record of managed objects and cause recreation or orphaning. Diagnose the specific constraint, resource, or migration issue in an isolated environment and use your established state procedures.
Does rolling back the provider undo an apply?
No. Returning to the prior provider package does not automatically reverse configuration edits or changes already made to remote services. Treat an applied change and any recovery as separate controlled operations, and retain the pre-upgrade plan and state records for comparison.
The Bottom Line
Upgrade deliberately: inventory every module and alias, read the v8.0.0 guide, migrate removed resources, correct schema and validation changes, pin the intended provider and lock file, run terraform init -upgrade in isolation, and approve only a fully reviewed plan. Validate state and workload behavior after apply, especially where defaults, collections, write-only fields, or preview providers are involved.
