You cannot perform an officially documented Linux Mint 27 upgrade yet. In its October 13, 2026 monthly news, the Linux Mint team said Mint 27 “Adrien” is scheduled for Christmas 2026, but described its features as previews still being developed. No Mint 27 upgrade guide has been published in the material currently available, so the supported starting versions, commands, prompts, and rollback requirements are unknown.
You can still prepare safely: make an independent copy of irreplaceable personal files, keep track of your installed Mint edition and version, and create a Timeshift system snapshot when the release-specific instructions call for one. A system snapshot helps roll back the operating system; it is not a substitute for a separate copy of your documents, photographs, projects, credentials, and other personal data.
What is known about Linux Mint 27
The Mint team’s October 13, 2026 announcement says the next release is planned for Christmas and will be called Linux Mint 27 “Adrien.” That is a target schedule, not a guarantee that the release or its upgrade tool will be available on a particular day. The same announcement presents the feature set as work in progress.

The team says Mint 27 will be based on Ubuntu 26.04 and is planned for at least the Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE desktop editions. Those are plans from a preview announcement, not final compatibility or upgrade specifications. The project also says it is moving to yearly releases without point releases; the release after 27 is planned to be 28.

Why “keeping your files” requires two protections
A Timeshift snapshot protects the system state
The Mint 22.3 upgrade guide recommends creating a Timeshift snapshot before changing the operating system. A snapshot is intended for system rollback: it records the operating-system files and configuration needed to return the machine to an earlier state, subject to the snapshot tool’s settings and storage location.
That is different from a personal-file backup. A snapshot can be stored on the same physical disk as the installation, may exclude user data depending on its configuration, and is not a replacement for a second copy of valuable files. A disk failure, theft, accidental deletion, or an incorrectly selected snapshot target can defeat the protection you expected.

A separate copy protects irreplaceable personal data
Before any major release change, copy irreplaceable data to a different storage location. Include the folders and files you would struggle to recreate, such as:
- Documents, spreadsheets, school or work projects, and source code.
- Photographs, videos, music projects, and other media.
- Browser bookmarks and exported password data, if your browser supports a safe export method.
- Email archives, virtual-machine images, game saves, and application profiles that matter to you.
- SSH keys, encryption keys, certificates, recovery codes, and configuration files needed to regain access to services.
- Hidden folders under your home directory when an application stores important data there.
Use a destination that is not the same filesystem as the Mint installation. An external disk, a second computer, or a trusted storage service can serve that role; the right choice depends on your threat model and the sensitivity of the data. Encrypt confidential copies where practical, and confirm that the files can actually be opened from the backup location.

Mintbackup’s “Include All” option is useful but not a completeness guarantee
Linux Mint 22.3 feature notes say Mintbackup added an “Include All” button that makes it easier to add hidden files and folders to a backup. This is a version-specific application feature. It does not prove that every application’s data, every mounted volume, or every personal file is included, so review the resulting backup rather than assuming the button makes it complete.
What to do now, before Mint publishes its guide
1. Record your starting point
Note the Mint version, desktop edition, kernel or hardware changes you rely on, and any software that is essential to your work. Keep this information with your backup. When the official guide arrives, its eligibility rules will be written in terms of supported starting versions and editions; knowing your starting point prevents you from applying the wrong path.

Do not remove anything merely because it is third-party. The purpose of the list is to identify items that may need a compatible replacement or temporary disabling when the official guide discusses them.
2. Make and verify the separate personal-file backup
- Gather the personal folders and application data you cannot recreate.
- Copy them to storage that is separate from the Mint system disk.
- Include hidden files and folders when they contain settings, keys, or project data you need.
- Open representative files from the copy and check that filenames, permissions, and directory structure are intact.
- Keep the backup disconnected or otherwise protected from accidental changes until the upgrade is complete.
If a file is encrypted, make sure you also have the key or recovery information required to decrypt it. A backup that cannot be read after a reinstall is not a usable recovery plan.
3. Prepare a system snapshot when the official procedure requires it
Use Timeshift according to the Mint guide for your release. The 22.3 guide places the snapshot before package and system changes; a future Mint 27 guide may specify a different storage location, schedule, or validation step. Keep enough free space for the snapshot and record where it is stored.

Do not describe the snapshot as a second copy of your personal files. Keep the independent personal backup even when Timeshift reports success. If the snapshot is on the same disk and that disk fails, both the installed system and the rollback point can be lost.
4. Bring the current system to a known, supported state
When Mint publishes the Mint 27 instructions, follow its required preparation checks before starting. These may include applying current updates, refreshing Update Manager metadata, updating Mint’s upgrade components, and checking that repositories or packages will not block the transition. Until those instructions exist, avoid copying a command sequence from the Mint 22.3 point-release guide and labeling it as a Mint 27 method.
5. Plan time for recovery
Do not begin on a machine needed for an imminent deadline. Arrange access to another computer or your backup storage in case you need to read documentation, copy files, or obtain recovery media. A laptop should be connected to reliable power. A desktop should not be upgraded during a period when an unexpected restart or power interruption is likely.
The documented Mint 22.3 procedure—and why it is not a Mint 27 procedure
The latest Mint upgrade guide found for this topic covers upgrading Linux Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 to 22.3. It is a useful example of how Mint structures a point-release upgrade, but it must not be reused as instructions for Mint 27.
| Documented 22.3 action | What it demonstrates | How to treat it for Mint 27 |
|---|---|---|
| Create a Timeshift snapshot. | Mint places a rollback preparation step before system changes. | Wait for the Mint 27 guide to confirm whether Timeshift, its settings, and its storage requirements are the same. |
| Update Cinnamon spices if they are installed. | Desktop extensions can have release-specific compatibility considerations. | Do not assume the same extension checks or wording will apply to Mint 27, especially on Xfce or MATE. |
Open Update Manager, refresh it, and apply relevant updates, including updates to mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info when offered. |
The upgrade tool itself may need to be current before it exposes a supported path. | Use the package names and update sequence specified by the Mint 27 documentation, not the 22.3 sequence by analogy. |
Select Edit->Upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3 Zena. |
A supported point-release upgrade can be launched from a named Update Manager menu entry. | There is no established Mint 27 menu label yet. Do not click a similarly named option unless Mint documents it for your system. |
| Follow the prompts and reboot. | The tool controls the package transition and requires a restart to load the updated system. | Follow Mint 27’s prompts exactly and read its warnings before accepting changes. |
Mint 22.3 receives security updates until 2029, according to its release information. That support statement applies to 22.3; it does not establish a support period for Mint 27.

How to decide when the Mint 27 guide appears
Check the starting-version rule first
Read the first section of the official guide for your installed release. It should state which versions can move directly to Mint 27 and whether an intermediate upgrade is required. If your version is not listed, stop rather than inferring eligibility from the 22.3 process.
Choose in-place upgrade or a clean installation deliberately
An in-place upgrade changes the existing installation while preserving its configuration when the supported tool succeeds. A clean installation replaces the operating system and therefore demands a verified personal-data backup and a plan to restore applications and settings.
Mint’s installation documentation describes creating bootable installation media. A USB flash drive is relevant if you choose the clean-install route; it is not established as a requirement for an in-place upgrade. A clean install may be appropriate when the official guide does not support your starting version, when the current installation has accumulated unresolvable package problems, or when you deliberately want a fresh layout. Those are decisions to make after reading Mint’s compatibility guidance, not reasons to bypass it.
Review the proposed package changes
Before confirming the upgrade, inspect the tool’s summary of packages to install, update, or remove. Unexpected removals of applications, desktop components, drivers, or data-related packages are a reason to stop and investigate. Capture the exact warning or error text so you can compare it with Mint’s documentation or request help without guessing.

Do not erase the old snapshot or repurpose the personal-backup storage immediately after the first successful boot. Wait until you have checked your data, applications, networking, graphics, audio, printers, external drives, and the tasks you actually perform. The exact checks depend on your hardware and software; the important point is to preserve a recovery option while you verify the result.

A safe sequence once official instructions are published
- Read the release announcement and the upgrade guide for your edition. Confirm that Mint 27 is released, identify the supported source versions, and note any edition-specific instructions.
- Update the current system as directed. Use Update Manager and the package updates named by Mint. Do not substitute an older point-release sequence.
- Review third-party software and repositories. Follow Mint’s instructions for packages or repositories that are not part of the supported base. Record any changes so you can restore a needed repository after the upgrade in a compatible form.
- Complete both backups. Verify the separate personal-file copy, then create the Timeshift snapshot if the guide requires it.
- Start the documented upgrade tool. Read every prompt, especially proposed removals, held packages, repository warnings, and disk-space messages.
- Stop for unexpected errors. Do not force the process to continue, delete packages at random, or reboot repeatedly. Save the error details and consult the release-specific recovery instructions.
- Reboot only when the tool says the transition is ready. Keep the computer on reliable power and avoid interrupting package configuration.
- Validate the installation. Check that your user account, home-directory files, network, graphics, sound, printers, external storage, and essential applications work.
- Retain recovery materials. Keep the personal backup and Timeshift snapshot until you have completed validation and are satisfied that the system is stable.
What to do if the upgrade is not available for your machine
If Mint’s guide excludes your starting version or edition, do not force an unsupported in-place conversion. Continue receiving updates for your current supported release while you decide between a documented intermediate upgrade and a clean installation. The correct choice depends on the eligibility rules Mint publishes for 27.
If you choose a clean installation, use the official installation-media instructions, verify that your personal backup is readable, and make a written list of applications and settings to restore. Keep the original disk or a separate system snapshot untouched until the new installation has passed your checks. A clean installation can preserve your files only when you deliberately copy them back from a verified backup; the installer itself should not be treated as a data-preservation mechanism.
Common mistakes that put data at risk
- Upgrading before release: Mint 27 is still upcoming as of October 17, 2026, so unofficial commands may target development packages or an unsupported path.
- Confusing a snapshot with a file backup: Timeshift is a rollback measure, not proof that every personal file is independently preserved.
- Ignoring hidden files: Application settings, keys, and project metadata may live in hidden folders. Mintbackup’s 22.3 “Include All” button helps select them, but you still need to review what was copied.
- Assuming all editions behave alike: Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE can have different extension and configuration considerations.
- Accepting unexpected removals: A long package-removal list can indicate a repository or compatibility problem. Stop and investigate before confirming.
- Deleting recovery copies too soon: Keep both forms of backup until the upgraded system has been tested against your real work.
What remains unknown until Mint publishes the Mint 27 guide
The following details cannot be answered responsibly from the current announcement and 22.3 documentation:
- The exact supported starting versions and whether an intermediate release is mandatory.
- Whether the upgrade will be exposed through Update Manager, a separate upgrade utility, or both.
- The final menu labels, commands, prompts, package checks, and repository handling rules.
- Edition-specific requirements for Cinnamon spices, Xfce components, MATE components, graphics drivers, or other add-ons.
- The official Timeshift configuration, rollback procedure, and any additional backup requirements.
- Expected downtime, disk-space requirements, and handling of packages that the tool proposes to remove.
When those answers are published, use them to replace this preparation guidance with the release-specific procedure. Until then, the safest plan is to protect personal files independently, keep a system rollback option, and wait for Mint’s own eligibility and upgrade instructions rather than guessing.
