The Framework Laptop 12 has one user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM slot and one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. Upgrading means replacing the existing memory module or drive rather than adding a second one. First identify whether your mainboard is Intel Core 13th Gen or Intel Core Series 3: the supported memory ceiling and speed differ. Then choose a correctly sized module, shut the laptop down completely, remove the input cover with a T5 Torx bit, install the component in its keyed socket, and verify that the firmware and operating system report the new capacity.

What you can upgrade

Framework’s product documentation describes the Laptop 12 as fully upgradeable, including memory and storage. The practical limits are set by the mainboard and the physical sockets: there is one DDR5 SO-DIMM slot and one M.2 2230 NVMe slot. Because each is a single slot, an upgrade replaces the installed part; it does not add a second memory stick or a second SSD.

Component Socket and format What the upgrade involves
Memory One DDR5 SO-DIMM Remove the existing module and install one compatible replacement
Storage One M.2 2230 NVMe SSD Remove the installed 2230 drive and install one replacement

The “2230” designation is important. It describes a drive approximately 22 mm wide and 30 mm long. A common M.2 2280 SSD is longer and should not be assumed to fit the Laptop 12. “M.2” alone is not enough information: the physical length and NVMe interface must both match.

Identify the Laptop 12 mainboard before buying RAM

Check whether your Laptop 12 uses an Intel Core 13th Gen mainboard or an Intel Core Series 3 mainboard. Framework’s replacement guide gives different supported memory limits for those generations.

Mainboard generation Replacement-guide ceiling Memory speed stated by the guide Important qualification
Intel Core 13th Gen Up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 Framework recommends native DDR5-5200 or DDR5-5600; DDR5-5600 operates at 5200 on this platform
Intel Core Series 3 Up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 Series 3 FAQ configurations are offered with up to 48 GB DDR5-5600, while compatible owner-supplied memory can reach 64 GB DDR5-6400

The configured-memory figure and the owner-installed maximum are not contradictory. A laptop configuration sold with up to 48 GB does not mean the single slot cannot accept a larger compatible module. Conversely, the maximum listed for one generation must not be applied to the other generation.

What to look for when selecting a SO-DIMM

  • Capacity: choose a capacity within the limit for your mainboard. A single-slot design means the capacity of the replacement module is the laptop’s total system memory.
  • Generation and speed: match the module to the 13th Gen or Series 3 requirements rather than shopping by the “DDR5” label alone.
  • Native speed: for 13th Gen, Framework recommends memory that natively runs at DDR5-5200 or DDR5-5600. A 5600 module is expected to run at 5200 on that platform.
  • Exact-module evidence: Framework lists or validates some modules, but compatibility evidence for one retail part should not be treated as proof for every module with similar specifications.

Why to avoid XMP DDR5 for this upgrade

Framework’s 13th Gen memory compatibility guidance recommends native-speed DDR5 rather than relying on XMP profiles. It reports customer cases in which some XMP modules failed to boot. XMP is therefore a compatibility risk, not a necessary feature for this laptop. Select a SO-DIMM whose rated operating specification is native to the platform, and check the applicable Framework compatibility guidance for the exact part before ordering.

“We recommend using DRAM that natively runs at DDR5-5200 or DDR5-5600 speeds (if using DDR5-5600, it will run at 5200 speed).”

Framework Knowledge Base, 13th Gen memory compatibility guidance

Choose a compatible M.2 2230 NVMe SSD

Framework’s 13th Gen FAQ says that any M.2 2230 NVMe drive can be used in the Laptop 12. The same FAQ describes Framework Marketplace options from 500 GB to 2 TB and other-brand options from 128 GB to 8 TB. Those ranges describe models referenced by Framework, not a guarantee that every retail SSD in every capacity will work in every configuration.

Check Requirement Why it matters
Physical size M.2 2230 A 2280 or other-length card will not match the Laptop 12’s socket and retention point
Interface NVMe The slot is specified for NVMe storage; “M.2” by itself does not identify the interface
Capacity Choose the capacity you need, subject to the exact model’s compatibility evidence Framework cites examples from 128 GB through 8 TB, but does not establish independent validation of every retail model
Model evidence Prefer a drive with compatibility information for this laptop or its exact mainboard Framework says its own compatibility testing has focused on the Western Digital SN770M; that is a statement of the company’s testing focus, not an independent ranking

Do not buy on capacity alone. Confirm the product listing says both “M.2 2230” and “NVMe.” If a listing says only “M.2 SSD,” ask the seller or manufacturer for the physical size and protocol before purchasing.

Prepare for the upgrade

Framework’s replacement guides classify the memory and SSD jobs as easy and estimate five to fifteen minutes for each. That is a vendor estimate, not a guarantee; first-time work, a tight input cover, or a drive migration can make the overall project longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up important files before opening the laptop.
  • For a boot-drive replacement, decide whether you will migrate the old drive’s data and operating system or perform a fresh installation. The physical replacement does not automatically copy anything to the new SSD.
  • Shut the laptop down fully. Do not use sleep or hibernation.
  • Unplug the charger and all peripherals.
  • Work on a clean, stable surface with the laptop’s display and input cover protected from scratches.
  • Use a T5 Torx bit. The Framework screwdriver supplied with the DIY laptop is the tool named by the guides, so an owner who has that screwdriver does not need to buy a separate one solely for this procedure.

Open the Laptop 12 safely

  1. Power off and unplug. Wait until the laptop is completely off, then disconnect power and accessories.
  2. Turn the laptop face down. Place it on a clean surface so the bottom cover is facing up.
  3. Loosen all eight captive bottom screws. Use the T5 Torx bit. The screws remain captive in the bottom cover; loosen each one rather than trying to remove it from the chassis.
  4. Turn the laptop face up and open the display flat. This exposes the input-cover edge and gives the cover room to lift.
  5. Lift the input cover from its hinge cutouts. Magnets hold the cover down. If it resists strongly, stop and check that all eight bottom screws are loose instead of forcing the cover.

Once the input cover is lifted, keep it controlled so no cable or edge is strained. The memory and SSD occupy separate areas and use different retention mechanisms.

Install or replace the SSD

Seat the M.2 2230 drive

  1. Hold the SSD by its edges. Avoid touching the gold contacts. If the contacts are touched accidentally, the quick-start guidance recommends cleaning them with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Find the notch in the connector edge and match it to the key in the socket. The contacts should face into the connector in the keyed orientation.
  3. Insert the drive at a shallow angle until most of the contacts are covered by the socket. Do not push the card straight down into the connector.
  4. Hold the black latch open, then press the free end of the SSD down until the card lies flat.
  5. Close the latch. It should click and hold the drive down. If the card springs up or the latch will not close, remove it and check the notch, insertion depth, and alignment rather than applying force.

The SSD latch is distinct from the memory clips. The drive is not properly secured merely because its connector is inserted; it must also lie flat under the black latch.

Install or replace memory

Seat the DDR5 SO-DIMM

  1. Locate and open the memory flap.
  2. Hold the SO-DIMM by its edges and align its notch with the key in the memory socket.
  3. Insert the module at a shallow angle. The gold contacts should slide into the socket before the module is pressed down.
  4. Press down on both edges until the side clips lock into the module’s cutouts. The clips should hold the SO-DIMM flat.
  5. Check that the module is even and fully engaged on both sides. A partially inserted SO-DIMM can produce a no-boot condition or an incorrect memory reading.

Series 3 orientation warning

Framework notes that Core Series 3 mainboards have the RAM flipped relative to the images in the guide. On Series 3, the shorter connector side is on the left. Follow the guide for your exact mainboard and use the socket’s key as the final orientation check; do not copy a photograph from a different generation.

Close the laptop and verify the upgrade

Use the complete official replacement procedure for the final reassembly sequence. In general, the input cover must sit back into its hinge cutouts and magnets, and the eight captive bottom screws must be tightened evenly without forcing a screw that is not aligned. Inspect the perimeter for a cover edge that is sitting high before turning the laptop over.

After reassembly, start the laptop and verify both components:

  • Open the operating system’s storage or disk-management view and confirm that the new SSD is detected at its expected capacity.
  • If the SSD is a replacement boot drive, detection alone is not enough: the computer still needs a valid operating system on that drive, either through a planned migration or a fresh installation.

These checks are sensible post-upgrade verification steps. They are separate from the physical seating instructions and should be performed only after the cover is secured.

Troubleshoot a failed boot or missing component

The laptop does not boot after a RAM upgrade

  • Power the laptop off and unplug it again.
  • Reopen the input cover and confirm that the SO-DIMM is inserted at the correct angle, its notch is aligned, and both side clips are locked.
  • Confirm that the module is appropriate for the mainboard generation and is not relying on an XMP-only profile.
  • If the module is DDR5-5600 on a 13th Gen board, remember that Framework states it will operate at 5200; that behavior is expected.
  • If the problem remains, reinstall the original module if available. A successful boot with the original part points toward module compatibility or seating rather than the opening procedure.

Installed memory is reported incorrectly

  • Shut down and reseat the module, pressing evenly on both edges until the clips engage.
  • Check the operating system and firmware after a complete power-off rather than relying on a sleep-wake cycle.
  • Confirm that you have not applied the Series 3 64 GB ceiling to a 13th Gen board, or vice versa.

The SSD is not detected

  • Power off, reopen the cover, and verify that the drive is an M.2 2230 NVMe model.
  • Remove and reinsert it at a shallow angle so most contacts enter the socket.
  • Make sure the black latch is open while pressing the drive flat and that it clicks closed afterward.
  • Check for contamination on the contacts and clean with a lint-free cloth if needed.
  • If the SSD is visible in firmware but the operating system cannot boot, the drive may simply lack a migrated or freshly installed operating system.

The input cover will not lift

Do not pry aggressively. The cover is held by magnets, but the guides require all eight captive bottom screws to be loosened first. Turn the laptop over and check each screw, then try the hinge cutouts again.

Plan the data move when replacing the boot SSD

Replacing storage is a hardware operation; it does not transfer the old drive’s files. Before removing a boot drive, choose one of two plans:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan What you must arrange When it fits
Migration or cloning A method to copy the old drive’s operating system, applications, and files to the replacement, plus a way to connect or otherwise access both drives during the process Useful when you want to preserve the existing installation
Fresh installation Installation media, backups of personal files, and any required account or license information Useful when you want a clean software setup

The sources for the physical replacement do not provide a migration procedure, so select a migration or installation method separately and confirm that your backup is readable before removing the original drive.

Buying checklist

  • Identify the mainboard as Intel Core 13th Gen or Intel Core Series 3.
  • For RAM, buy one DDR5 SO-DIMM matched to that generation’s capacity and native-speed guidance.
  • Avoid XMP-dependent DDR5 unless you have specific compatibility evidence for your exact board and module.
  • For storage, confirm both M.2 2230 dimensions and NVMe protocol.
  • Check the exact SSD model rather than assuming every drive in a capacity range is validated.
  • Back up data and make a boot-drive migration or reinstall plan before opening the laptop.
  • Have a T5 Torx bit available; the DIY Framework screwdriver is suitable if you received it with the laptop.

What this upgrade can and cannot promise

The documented limits are straightforward: one memory slot, one 2230 NVMe slot, a 48 GB DDR5-5200 ceiling for 13th Gen, and a 64 GB DDR5-6400 ceiling for Core Series 3. Framework’s SSD guidance describes broad 2230 NVMe compatibility and cites tested focus on the SN770M, but it does not establish independent validation of every retail model. No performance ranking, benchmark result, or universal guarantee follows from the socket specifications.

For a reliable upgrade, prioritize exact fit and generation-correct memory over a larger number on a product listing. Install slowly, verify the latches, and confirm recognition in firmware and the operating system before treating the job as complete.
