You can upgrade the Framework Laptop 12’s memory without moving the operating system, files, or applications because the existing SSD stays installed. An SSD replacement is different: the Laptop 12 has one M.2 2230 NVMe slot, so removing that drive removes the installed Windows or Linux system unless you migrate it first. Back up your data, decide between cloning and a clean installation, and only then replace the drive.

This guide separates the memory, SSD, and mainboard procedures so you know exactly what remains intact, what must be migrated, and which Framework instructions apply to your job.

Choose the upgrade that matches your goal

The right procedure depends on whether you are adding capacity, increasing memory, or replacing the board that holds the computer’s core firmware and components.

Upgrade What happens to the existing system drive? Do you need to migrate files or apps? Key specification or warning
Memory It remains installed and unchanged. No. Windows, Linux, files, and installed applications stay on the SSD. One DDR5 SO-DIMM. Framework lists up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 for 13th Gen Intel and up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 for Core Series 3.
SSD replacement The original SSD is removed from the laptop. Yes, if you want the existing operating system and applications. Clone or otherwise migrate before removing the old drive, or perform a fresh installation and restore your data. One M.2 2230 NVMe slot. Confirm both the 2230 size and NVMe interface before buying.
Mainboard replacement The drive may remain, but Windows can require security and activation preparation. Back up first and follow the separate mainboard instructions. Framework’s mainboard guidance addresses BitLocker, Device Encryption, and Windows reactivation; those instructions are not automatically required for a simple RAM or SSD change.

If your only problem is running out of memory, start with the memory procedure. If you need more storage, treat the SSD work as a data-migration project rather than only a hardware repair.

What to prepare before opening the Laptop 12

Confirm the exact hardware

  • For storage, buy an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. “M.2” alone is not enough: many M.2 drives are longer than 2230 or use a different interface.
  • For memory, identify whether your Laptop 12 uses a 13th Gen Intel processor or a Core Series 3 processor. The supported capacity and speed differ by generation.
  • Have a T5 Torx bit available. Framework’s DIY quick-start materials list a Framework Screwdriver among the included items, so owners of that package may not need to purchase a separate tool.
  • Have a second storage location for backups, such as an external USB drive. Framework recommends backing up before storage work but does not endorse a particular drive.

Make a backup you can actually restore

Copy documents, photos, project folders, browser data, password-manager vaults, and any other irreplaceable files to a separate device or service. Open several copied files to confirm that the backup is readable. If you use application-specific libraries—such as a mail archive, virtual-machine image, game saves, or a creative-project catalog—export or copy those libraries as well; a generic document backup may not include them.

A backup protects personal data. It does not by itself preserve installed applications, their settings, or their activation state. Those require either a working copy of the original system or a documented reinstall and sign-in process.

Record your current setup

Before an SSD swap, note the operating-system edition, installed applications, license or subscription accounts, and any custom partitions. Save recovery keys where you can retrieve them without the laptop. This information makes a clean installation and application reinstall much faster if you decide not to clone.

Upgrading memory without moving your files or apps

Supported memory limits

Processor in Laptop 12 Framework-listed maximum Memory type and speed
13th Gen Intel Up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 SO-DIMM
Core Series 3 Up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 SO-DIMM

These are compatibility limits from Framework’s Laptop 12 memory guide, not performance benchmarks. A module rated faster than the platform’s supported speed may operate at the supported speed instead. Do not treat the Core Series 3 capacity as universal to every Laptop 12 configuration.

Memory installation procedure

  1. Finish your backup and shut down the operating system completely. Do not work on a sleeping or hibernating machine.
  2. Disconnect the charger and all peripherals. Framework’s opening instructions require the computer to be powered down and unplugged.
  3. Use the Laptop 12 memory guide and a T5 Torx bit to open the bottom cover. Follow the guide’s panel and connector sequence rather than forcing a cover or cable.
  4. Install a compatible DDR5 SO-DIMM in the documented slot. Align the notch, insert the module at the guide’s angle, and press it down until the retaining clips engage. Never force a misaligned module.
  5. Close the laptop, reconnect power, and start it. Check the reported memory amount in the operating system’s system information. A small difference between the physical capacity and the amount available to the OS can be normal because firmware and hardware reserve some memory.

Because the SSD was not removed, this upgrade does not require Windows installation, application reinstallation, or file migration. If the new capacity is not detected, shut down again and reseat the SO-DIMM; then verify that its capacity and DDR5 specification fit the processor generation.

Replacing the SSD while keeping the existing Windows or Linux setup

Understand the one-drive limitation

The Laptop 12 provides one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. There is no second internal slot in which to leave the old system drive while you install a larger one. The original drive must therefore be preserved externally or copied to the replacement before the old drive is removed.

Framework rates the physical SSD replacement guide as Easy and estimates 00:05:00–00:15:00. That estimate covers the physical replacement task only. It does not include backup, cloning, operating-system installation, troubleshooting, application reinstalls, or restoring data.

Choose a migration outcome

Outcome What you do What to expect
Clone or otherwise migrate the existing system Keep the old SSD available, copy its partitions to the new 2230 NVMe drive with a method suitable for your operating system, then boot and verify before treating the old drive as a backup. Designed to retain the existing OS, files, settings, and installed applications, but Framework does not publish or validate a Laptop 12-specific cloning recipe. A clone is not a guarantee that every application, activation, encryption arrangement, or license will continue unchanged.
Fresh Windows installation Replace the drive, install Windows 11 Home or Pro from installation media, install Framework’s Driver Bundle, restore backed-up files, and reinstall applications. Produces a clean system. It does not keep already-installed applications; those must be installed again.
Fresh Linux installation Install the distribution supported by your own workflow, then restore data and reinstall packages or applications. Exact bootloader, encryption, and package steps depend on the distribution and disk layout. Framework’s cited Laptop 12 material does not provide a universal Linux cloning procedure.

If you want a clone

Cloning is a possible approach, not a Framework-validated guarantee for the Laptop 12. The exact sequence depends on your operating system, partition layout, encryption, and the two drives’ capacities. Before starting, read the documentation for the migration software you choose and confirm that it supports your source format and boot mode.

  1. Back up irreplaceable files independently of the clone. A clone is another copy of the system, not a substitute for a tested personal-data backup.
  2. Keep the original SSD untouched until the replacement has booted and your important files and applications have been checked. If the new drive fails, the original is your fastest recovery path.
  3. Connect the replacement drive using hardware and software appropriate to an M.2 2230 NVMe device, then perform the migration according to the chosen tool’s instructions. Do not assume that a larger target will automatically arrange partitions correctly.
  4. Shut down, unplug the laptop, and install the replacement by following Framework’s physical SSD guide. Use the T5 Torx bit and observe the guide’s handling and screw instructions.
  5. Start the laptop and verify that the expected drive is selected as the boot device. Check your user profile, documents, application launchers, and any encrypted or secondary partitions.
  6. Only after successful verification should you repurpose or erase the original SSD. Retain it as a fallback until your normal backup routine has captured the new system.

Do not promise yourself that cloning will preserve every activation. Some applications tie licenses to hardware, accounts, or installation identifiers; others require a fresh sign-in or reactivation after a drive change. Keep license information and installer sources available.

If you want a clean Windows 11 installation

Framework’s Windows 11 installation guide is specifically for the Laptop 12 DIY Edition. It covers Windows 11 Home or Pro installation from installation media and says: “Before installing Windows 11 Home or Pro on your Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition, make sure you’ve installed memory, storage, and Wi-Fi.” The guide’s public release is 1.03, dated 2026-05-27.

  1. Create or obtain Windows 11 installation media using a separate working computer and a suitable USB drive. Confirm that you have the edition and account details you intend to use.
  2. Back up the old SSD and any files on it before removing it. If you want the option of returning to the previous system, label and store the original drive safely.
  3. Power down the Laptop 12, unplug it, and replace the SSD with the compatible M.2 2230 NVMe model using the official physical replacement guide.
  4. Boot from the Windows installation media and select the new drive for installation. The installer’s partition choices erase data on the selected target, so verify the drive identity before confirming.
  5. Complete Windows setup, connect to the network, and run Windows Update.
  6. Install Framework’s Driver Bundle. Framework specifically advises this because a fresh installation may not include every driver needed for full hardware support.
  7. Test the keyboard, touchpad, display, audio, wireless networking, Bluetooth, USB and expansion ports, sleep and wake, camera, and any other hardware you use.
  8. Restore personal files from your backup and reinstall applications from their original installers or official stores. Sign in and reactivate software as required by each publisher.

A clean installation gives you a known-good software baseline, but it is not a way to retain the applications already installed on the old drive. Keep the old SSD until you have confirmed that the restored files and newly installed applications meet your needs.

Check Why it matters
Form factor: M.2 2230 A physically longer M.2 drive will not fit the Laptop 12’s slot.
Interface: NVMe The slot is specified for an NVMe SSD; a SATA M.2 drive is a different interface.
Capacity Choose enough space for the operating system, applications, files, and free working room. If cloning, the used data and partition layout must fit the target.
Warranty and endurance terms These affect long-term risk and are vendor-specific. Read the terms for the exact model and region.
Price Prices vary by capacity, seller, and date. Compare current offers for the exact 2230 NVMe model rather than assuming a larger or faster-looking drive is compatible.

Framework does not publish a Laptop 12 performance benchmark that would justify ranking drives by advertised sequential read or write numbers. Treat those figures as vendor specifications, not as tested Laptop 12 results.

Mainboard replacement is a separate job

Do not apply the mainboard guide’s security instructions automatically to a RAM or SSD replacement. A mainboard change can alter the hardware identity used by Windows security and activation; a memory or storage swap is a different operation.

For a Laptop 12 mainboard replacement, Framework’s guide tells Windows users to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up their data.
  • Suspend BitLocker when using Windows Pro, if BitLocker is enabled.
  • Turn off Device Encryption on Windows Home, if it is enabled.
  • Locate the Windows product key or link the license to a Microsoft account in case Windows needs reactivation after the board change.

Follow those instructions only when you are actually replacing the mainboard, and record any recovery keys before beginning. If your project is limited to memory or the SSD, use the corresponding upgrade guide instead of changing encryption settings unnecessarily.

After the upgrade: verification and recovery

The laptop does not see the new SSD

  • Shut down and unplug the computer before reopening it.
  • Verify that the drive is an M.2 2230 NVMe model and is fully seated in the slot.
  • Check the mounting screw and the physical alignment described in Framework’s guide; do not bend the module.
  • If you performed a clone, confirm that the migration completed without errors and that the target contains the expected boot and system partitions.
  • If you performed a clean installation, recreate the installation media if the installer cannot detect the target, then check the drive in the installer’s disk list before deleting partitions.

The system starts, but applications are missing

This is expected after a fresh installation. Restore your files, then reinstall the applications and sign in or reactivate them. A clone may retain applications, but each application’s licensing and hardware checks can produce a different result; consult the application publisher if an activation is rejected.

Windows hardware is incomplete after a clean install

Run Windows Update and install Framework’s Driver Bundle as directed by the Laptop 12 Windows installation guide. Recheck wireless networking, audio, input devices, display behavior, and ports after the driver installation. Do not assume that the generic drivers included with Windows provide full Laptop 12 support.

New memory capacity is not reported

Power off, unplug, and reseat the DDR5 SO-DIMM. Confirm that the module’s capacity and speed are within the limit for your processor generation. A module rated above the supported speed may run at the supported speed, but a capacity beyond the listed platform limit is not guaranteed to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need to return to the old system

If you kept the original SSD, reinstall it only after shutting down and unplugging the Laptop 12, then follow the same physical guide in reverse. If the original drive was erased, recovery depends on the backup you made and the reinstall media you retained; this is why an independent backup and a verified post-upgrade copy matter.

A practical checklist

  • Identify whether the job is memory, SSD, or mainboard work.
  • Confirm the Laptop 12 processor generation before selecting memory.
  • Confirm M.2 2230 NVMe before purchasing an SSD.
  • Back up personal data and verify that the backup opens.
  • Record application installers, accounts, licenses, and recovery keys.
  • For an SSD swap, choose cloning or a fresh installation before removing the old drive.
  • Keep the original SSD until the replacement has booted and your files and applications have been checked.
  • Use a powered-down, unplugged laptop and the T5 Torx procedure in Framework’s guide.
  • After a clean Windows installation, install the Framework Driver Bundle.
  • Apply BitLocker, Device Encryption, and reactivation steps only when replacing the mainboard.
