Relic upgrading in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is a two-part process: find Relics in Norgan, then take them to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement for appraisal. Appraisal converts a Relic into a weapon or armor piece that can have improved statistics and new or refined abilities. That system is separate from ordinary smithing enhancements, so the best results come from evaluating an appraised item for your vocation, Pawn party and weight limit before choosing any further upgrades.
What Relics are—and what they are not
Relics are loot tied to the Dark Arisen expansion’s Norgan region. They are not a generic name for every enhancement material in the base game, and collecting one does not directly add strength, magick or armor to equipment already in your inventory. A Relic must be appraised before you know which piece of gear it represents.
The reported loop is straightforward: explore Norgan, recover Relics from treasure chests or dangerous enemies, and deliver them to Jiera at Norgandian Settlement. The appraisal produces a weapon or armor item. Depending on its parameters, that result may outperform your current equipment or offer an ability that changes how your Arisen or Pawns handle a fight.

This is different from the normal enhancement menu used by blacksmiths. Base-game smithing applies a regional style to existing gear. Relic appraisal determines what the Relic becomes in the first place. The available descriptions do not establish that every appraised Relic accepts every base-game enhancement style, so inspect the live enhancement menu for each item instead of assuming compatibility.

Where to find Relics in Norgan
Treasure chests
Search chests throughout Norgan, including areas that require you to leave the main path or deal with a dangerous encounter first. The expansion description identifies chests as one of the normal sources, but it does not publish a complete chest-by-chest list or a guaranteed Relic schedule. Treat exploration as the reliable strategy rather than waiting for a specific chest to respawn a particular result.
Dangerous enemies
Relics can also be awarded by dangerous enemies. This makes combat routes useful when you are already hunting experience, materials or vocation practice. No verified drop percentage or enemy-specific table is available, so do not plan a build around a promised Relic from one named monster.
Freki’s search assistance
Freki, a Norgandian direwolf, can help search for Relics. The reported interaction requires meat and petting. Freki is an additional search aid, not the only way to obtain Relics: chests and enemy rewards remain part of the normal loop. If you are budgeting supplies, bring suitable meat before relying on Freki’s assistance and continue exploring rather than treating the interaction as a guaranteed drop.
How to appraise a Relic at Norgandian Settlement
Jiera is the named NPC for Relic appraisal. Use this sequence when you have returned from Norgan with one or more Relics:
- Travel to Norgandian Settlement in the Norgan region.
- Locate Jiera and begin the appraisal interaction.
- Select the Relic you want to process from the available inventory list.
- Confirm the appraisal and inspect the resulting weapon or armor before deciding whether to equip, store or enhance it.
- Compare the item with your current equipment on the Arisen and each Pawn who could use it.
The broad outcome is established, but there is no published recipe that lets you choose a precise weapon, armor slot or ability. A Steam-hosted Capcom announcement excerpt describes appraisal results as having random parameters, while the accessible information does not spell out every randomization rule or a method for targeting a particular roll. In practical terms, appraisal is an identification-and-generation step, not a conventional upgrade bar with a predictable level-by-level stat increase.
What an appraised Relic can give you
Weapons and armor
Jiera’s appraisal produces a weapon or armor item. Read the complete item card rather than judging it by its name or by the fact that it came from a Relic. Two results that occupy the same general equipment role can differ in attack, magick, defenses, weight and ability effects.

Improved statistics
An appraised item may improve statistics compared with ordinary gear you are using. Check the actual comparison screen for your vocation: a higher physical attack value is not automatically better for a spell-focused build, and a small defensive gain may be worthwhile if it keeps a heavily encumbered Pawn from losing mobility.

Relic gear can grant new abilities or refine existing effects for the Arisen or Pawns. The available announcements do not provide a complete, verified bonus catalogue, so avoid assuming that a named Relic always carries one fixed skill. Evaluate the ability text on the item you actually received and test how it fits your vocation’s attacks, spells and stamina economy.
How to judge a Relic bonus for your party
“Best” is role-dependent. A bonus that is excellent on a front-line Fighter can be wasted on a Mage, while a weight increase that is manageable for the Arisen may push a support Pawn into a worse encumbrance tier. Use the following checks in order.
1. Match the item to the user
Start with the vocation that can equip the item and the job you want that character to perform. For a damage vocation, inspect the relevant attack or magick value first. For a tank or control role, prioritize survivability, resistance or knockdown-related effects. For a support caster, an ability that improves spell uptime or utility may matter more than a modest raw-stat increase.
2. Read the ability’s actual trigger
Determine whether the bonus is always active, tied to a specific weapon skill, dependent on a status condition or limited to a particular attack pattern. A theoretically strong effect is less useful if your current vocation rarely activates it. Put the item on the character who can trigger it consistently, not necessarily the character with the highest level.

3. Account for the whole Pawn group
For Pawns, consider overlap. If two characters already provide the same defensive or support function, a Relic that repeats it may add less value than one that fills a missing role. Conversely, a reliable defensive effect can be preferable to a narrow damage bonus when your party regularly loses a Pawn in the opening seconds of a difficult fight.

4. Check weight before committing
Weight affects how much equipment, loot and consumables a character can carry before encumbrance becomes a problem. Compare the Relic’s weight with the gain it offers. A small attack improvement that forces frequent inventory management may be a poor practical trade, especially for a travelling Pawn who gathers items during long expeditions.
5. Keep a useful alternative
Because appraisal parameters are not fully predictable, retain a second item when it serves a different role. A high-damage weapon and a lighter weapon with a useful control effect can both be valuable, depending on whether you are fighting a boss, clearing ordinary enemies or travelling through a region with a heavy loot load.
Relic appraisal versus ordinary smithing enhancements
Ordinary equipment enhancement starts with gear you already own and applies a smithing style. A guide updated March 31, 2024 describes five styles. Those descriptions are useful for understanding the trade-offs, but exact values and compatibility can change with patches, and the guide predates the Dark Arisen expansion. Confirm the current in-game figures before spending rare materials.
| Style | Main offensive effect | Defensive or handling effect | Weight trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vermundian | Balanced boosts to strength and magick | General-purpose profile | Small weight reduction |
| Battahli | Favors strength and physical attack | Best suited to physical damage priorities | Weight increases |
| Elven | Favors magick | Useful when spell power is the priority | Weight reduction |
| Dwarven | Balanced offensive boosts | Additional weapon knockdown power or armor resistance | Weight increases |
| Wyrmfire | Further stat boost after equipment is fully enhanced | Requires special monster materials | Described as halving weight |
These styles are not a universal ranking. Vermundian is a balanced option, Battahli suits physical attackers who can absorb extra weight, Elven favors magick users and lighter loadouts, Dwarven adds control or resistance at a carrying-cost, and Wyrmfire is a late investment for already fully enhanced equipment. Your vocation, existing stats and encumbrance target determine which trade-off is useful.
Choosing a smithing style after appraisal
Physical damage builds
Compare Battahli and Dwarven when strength, physical attack or knockdown is central to the build. Battahli is the more direct physical-offense choice but adds weight. Dwarven may be more valuable when staggering large enemies or improving armor resistance is part of your survival plan. If carrying capacity is already a problem, the extra weight can erase the practical benefit.
Magick-focused builds
Elven is the clearest orientation when magick is the priority and a lighter load matters. Vermundian can make sense for a hybrid character that needs both strength and magick rather than maximizing one stat. Compare the actual values shown by the current game version instead of relying on a fixed community table.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Balanced or defensive builds
Vermundian offers a general-purpose balance. Dwarven becomes attractive when the item’s role includes knockdown pressure or resistance and you can carry the added weight. A defensive choice is not automatically inferior: keeping a front-line character active can produce more damage over a full encounter than a fragile high-attack setup.
Fully enhanced equipment
Wyrmfire is described as an additional enhancement for equipment that has already been fully enhanced and that uses special monster materials. Because this is a later investment, check the material requirement and the resulting stat and weight changes in your current version before consuming rare drops.
A safe workflow for maximizing Relic value
- Set the role first. Decide whether the item is intended for damage, control, defense, support or travel efficiency.
- Record the baseline. Note the current weapon or armor’s attack, magick, defenses, resistances, weight and relevant ability before appraisal.
- Appraise at Jiera. Process the Relic in Norgandian Settlement and read every parameter on the resulting item.
- Compare across the party. Check the Arisen and eligible Pawns, including their current encumbrance and role overlap.
- Test the ability in ordinary combat. Confirm its trigger, range and usefulness before replacing a dependable item for a theoretical gain.
- Inspect the smithing menu. If the item can be enhanced, review the styles and material costs presented by the current game. Do not assume that every appraised Relic supports every base-game method.
- Choose the trade-off deliberately. Apply the style that supports the role you selected, not simply the style with the largest single number.
- Recheck encumbrance. Equip the finished item, then review carrying capacity and the rest of the inventory. Sell, store or redistribute weight if the upgrade creates a new travel problem.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing Relics with enhancement materials
Relics are expansion loot that must be appraised. They are not a universal currency that you feed into a blacksmith to raise any weapon. If you are searching for an enhancement menu, you are using the ordinary gear system rather than the Relic loop.
Expecting a guaranteed bonus
The available description of random parameters does not support a guaranteed bonus table or a published method for forcing a specific ability. Do not discard an item because it lacks a bonus you saw in an unverified list, and do not spend materials on the assumption that a particular Relic name guarantees a fixed result.
Ignoring weight
Attack and magick values are easy to compare, while weight is often noticed only after the character becomes encumbered. Include weight in the first comparison, especially when selecting Battahli or Dwarven-style enhancements that are described as heavier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

There is no evidence for one best smithing style across all Arisen and Pawn builds. Physical attackers, spellcasters, tanks, hybrid characters and travelling parties have different priorities. Use the style table as a decision aid, then verify the actual values in your game.

Assuming old guide values are unchanged
The enhancement reference was updated March 31, 2024, while the Dark Arisen Relic reporting is dated September 2, 2026. Patches can change costs, values or compatibility. Treat precise figures from older guides as orientation and let the current item and smithing screens decide your purchase.
Troubleshooting the Relic loop
Jiera is not available
Confirm that you are in Norgandian Settlement in Norgan and that the Dark Arisen content is accessible on your character. Jiera, rather than a generic smith in another region, is the named appraisal contact.
You found no Relic while exploring
Search additional chests and continue fighting dangerous enemies. Freki can assist, but the reported system does not make Freki the sole source. There is no verified drop-rate table that can predict how many encounters are required.
The appraised item is weaker than expected
Compare the whole item card, including ability text and weight. A lower raw attack value can still be useful if the ability fills a missing party role, while a slightly higher value may be impractical if it causes encumbrance or does not match the user’s vocation.
The enhancement option is missing
Do not infer a bug from the absence of a particular style. The available material does not establish universal compatibility between appraised Relics and every base-game enhancement method. Check the current smithing requirements and item restrictions, then verify that you selected the correct piece of equipment.
What is currently known—and what remains uncertain
Capcom’s online manual, updated July 20, 2026, points players to official game information but does not provide a detailed public Relic-appraisal recipe in the accessible material. A September 2, 2026 report describes the Norgan, Freki, Jiera and appraisal loop, while a Steam-hosted Capcom announcement excerpt mentions random parameters. Together, these establish the location and broad behavior, not exact drop odds, a complete bonus list, guaranteed outcomes or a universal best-in-slot ranking.
For that reason, verify live behavior before committing rare materials: check the appraisal result, inspect the item’s ability text, confirm its smithing options and compare the final weight with your party’s loadout. Those checks are more reliable than treating an old list of numbers as permanent.
