You can safely upgrade many mini PCs, but there is no universal RAM module or SSD that fits every model. First identify the exact manufacturer, model, revision and service manual. Then verify whether memory is socketed or soldered, which DDR generation and voltage it uses, the maximum supported capacity and speed, and whether the storage bay accepts NVMe, SATA, a particular M.2 length or a 2.5-inch drive.
Back up your data, disconnect every cable, control static electricity, open only the panels described for your model, and install modules without force. The procedures below cover removable SO-DIMM memory, M.2 SSDs and 2.5-inch SATA drives while showing where model-specific instructions take priority.
Start with the exact mini-PC model
Read the model number from the bottom label, original documentation, firmware screen or operating-system information. Record the revision, serial number, current RAM arrangement and every installed drive before buying parts. A product family can contain several board revisions with different sockets, mounting points or firmware limits.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance or user guide for that exact model. ASUS notes in its support material, updated March 20, 2026, that illustrations and operations can vary by model. Treat generic advice as a checklist, not as permission to install a part that merely looks similar.

Decide whether the RAM is upgradeable
Socketed SO-DIMM memory
SO-DIMM means a removable laptop-size memory module in the cited mini-PC guides. A socket has side latches and a removable board; you can replace an existing module or fill an empty slot, subject to the model’s capacity and speed limits.
Soldered LPDDR memory
LPDDR4X or LPDDR5 described as soldered, integrated or onboard is fixed to the motherboard. It cannot be replaced by removing a module. If the manual lists only onboard memory and no SO-DIMM socket, plan an external-storage or replacement-computer solution rather than forcing the chassis open in search of a slot.
How many slots and what limit?
Do not infer a maximum from the processor name or from another mini PC using the same processor. The model manual is authoritative. For example, the Intel NUC7i3DNHNC guide documents two 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets, 1.2-volt, 2,133 MHz, non-ECC memory, with one 4 GB DDR4 2,133 MHz SO-DIMM pre-installed. ZOTAC’s MAGNUS ONE documentation, dated February 4, 2021, says its two SODIMM slots support up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM. Those figures apply to those models, not to mini PCs generally.

|---|---|---|
| Technology | DDR4 or DDR5; LPDDR4X/LPDDR5 onboard versus removable SO-DIMM | Different generations and package types are not interchangeable. |
| Voltage | The exact voltage in the manual, such as 1.2 V for the cited Intel model | Voltage and signaling must match the board. |
| Speed | Supported frequency and whether faster modules will downclock | The system may run at the platform limit; unsupported profiles can prevent booting. |
| Capacity | Maximum per slot and total system capacity | There is no universal mini-PC maximum. |
| Error correction | ECC or non-ECC requirement | The Intel example requires non-ECC SO-DIMMs. |
| Channel layout | Two equal modules, unequal modules or one module | Capacity matching affects channel mode and usable bandwidth. |
Check channel matching and speed
Two equal-capacity SO-DIMMs generally provide the most straightforward dual-channel configuration when the platform supports it. HP states in the Z2 Mini G9 Maintenance and Service Guide that equal capacities in channel A and channel B enable the higher-performing dual-channel mode. Unequal capacities use flex mode, in which part of the memory operates in dual channel and the remainder does not. HP also states that the slowest SO-DIMM sets the maximum operating speed.

Therefore, mixing a new module with an old one is not automatically unsafe, but it can reduce speed, prevent the intended channel arrangement or expose compatibility differences. Match capacity, DDR generation, voltage and rated speed whenever practical. If the manual recommends a specific module organization, follow it instead of relying on the labels alone.
Identify the storage interface before buying
M.2 NVMe
NVMe drives communicate over PCI Express. An M.2 connector that accepts NVMe is not necessarily compatible with every M.2 drive: keying, protocol and length must all agree. Confirm the standoff position as well as the connector key.
M.2 SATA
M.2 SATA drives use the SATA protocol even though they have an M.2 shape. A slot wired only for NVMe will not recognize an M.2 SATA drive, and a slot wired only for SATA will not provide NVMe operation. The manual must identify the supported protocol.

Common lengths include 2242 (42 mm) and 2280 (80 mm), but the available length is model-specific. Intel documents both 42 mm and 80 mm support on one NUC model. ASUS documents separate 2242 and 2280 mounting positions on the PB60S. A drive that fits the connector but lacks a matching standoff can flex or be damaged; never leave a long module unsupported.

2.5-inch SATA
A 2.5-inch bay requires more than an empty cavity. Check for the bay, bracket, SATA daughterboard or ribbon cable, connector orientation and supported drive thickness. Intel and ZOTAC document 2.5-inch installation on particular models, but those provisions are not universal.
| Storage option | Verify in the model guide | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| M.2 NVMe | NVMe support, key, 2242/2280 length, standoff and thermal clearance | Fast boot or application drive where the slot is PCIe-enabled. |

| 2.5-inch SATA | Bay, bracket, cable or daughterboard, thickness and screw points | Additional or replacement bulk storage when the chassis provides the hardware. |
Prepare a safe work area
Back up and document first
Back up important files to a separate, verified destination. If replacing the boot drive, decide whether you will clone it or perform a clean operating-system installation before removing the original. Keep the original drive untouched until the new installation has booted and your data is verified.
Record the current RAM amount, drive model and partition arrangement. A photograph of every connector is useful when a fan, SATA ribbon or shield must be moved.

Shut the mini PC down completely. Disconnect the power adapter, network cable, display cable, USB devices and every other connection. ASUS’s support guidance states: “Before performing any steps, disconnect the computer from the power source and all network connections.” A power button showing the off state does not prove that every circuit is inactive.

Control electrostatic discharge
Work on a clean, non-carpeted surface. Use a grounded antistatic wrist strap connected as directed by its manufacturer, or touch grounded metal before handling the board and modules and repeat that contact as needed. Intel warns in the NUC7i3DNHNC User Guide that “Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components.” Intel specifies an ESD workstation, wrist strap and conductive pad where available.
Organize screws and panels
Use the correct screwdriver and place screws in separate labeled containers by location. Remove only the screws and panels shown in the exact service manual. Some bottom covers conceal fan or SATA cables; lift the cover slowly and disconnect a cable by its connector rather than pulling the wire. Never force a connector, shield or module.
Install or replace SO-DIMM RAM
- Open the documented access panel. Follow the model guide’s sequence. If a fan, shield or bracket blocks the sockets, note its orientation and disconnect only the connectors necessary for access.
- Release the existing module. Push the socket’s side latches outward. The SO-DIMM should rise. Hold it by the edges, remove it without touching the gold contacts and place it in an antistatic bag.
- Align the notch. Compare the module’s keyed notch with the raised key in the socket. The notch prevents insertion in the wrong orientation; do not try to reverse it.
- Insert at the specified angle. Intel shows about a 45-degree insertion angle in the NUC7i3DNHNC guide; HP shows approximately 30 degrees for its system. Use the angle in your own manual, because the mechanical geometry can differ.
- Lock the module down. Once the contacts are fully engaged, press down on the outer edges until both latches click into the module’s notches. If a latch does not close, remove the module and realign it rather than applying more pressure.
- Reinstall moved hardware. Replace any shield or fan and route cables exactly as photographed. Ensure no cable is trapped under the cover or across a fan.
Install an M.2 SSD
- Confirm the replacement drive. Before opening the case, match its NVMe or SATA protocol, connector key, 2242 or 2280 length and intended standoff to the model documentation. Check that any heatsink or label will fit beneath the mini-PC cover; a tall heatsink can prevent the cover from closing.
- Remove the retaining screw. Keep it with the drive hardware. Do not remove unrelated motherboard screws.
- Insert the drive at an angle. Align the keyed edge with the socket and slide the contacts in evenly. If it does not slide in with light pressure, stop and recheck keying and orientation.
- Lower it onto the standoff. Press the free end down only after the contacts are seated. Install the retaining screw into the correct standoff and tighten it snugly without overtightening.
- Protect the original boot drive. If this is a replacement, leave the original installed or stored safely until cloning or the clean installation has been completed and verified. Do not initialize or format the wrong disk.
Install a 2.5-inch SATA drive
- Expose the bay or bracket. Follow the model guide; a bracket may be attached to the cover or an internal frame.
- Secure the drive. Use the original screws and the documented mounting holes. Confirm that the drive thickness and connector position match the bay.
- Seat the cable or daughterboard. Fully insert the SATA connector or ribbon cable in the documented orientation. A partially seated cable can make a correctly mounted drive appear dead.
- Reinstall the bracket and cover. Check that the cable has its intended bend radius and is not pinched by the panel or fan.
Reassemble and verify before changing data
Refit the cover and all screws before reconnecting power. Reconnect only the essential cables for the first test. Enter the firmware setup if needed and confirm the expected RAM amount and drive model. If the firmware does not list a drive, do not initialize or format it in the operating system yet.
Once the hardware appears in firmware, start the operating system and check that the drive is visible before cloning, partitioning or moving files. Verify the installed memory amount and, where the operating system exposes it, the channel arrangement and operating speed. The cited manuals document installation and recognition behavior, but they do not define one universal diagnostic sequence for every mini PC.
Best Value
- PCIe Gen4 performance improves slow boot times and launches apps faster at speeds up to 5,000MB/s. (Based on read speed, unless otherwise stated. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance will vary depending on host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Storage up to 2TB* keeps your photos, videos and other important files within reach. (1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1 TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less, depending on operating environment.)
- Slim M.2 SSD design utilizes a single-sided M.2 2280 to be compatible with thin laptops and small PCs.
- Multitask with breathtaking responsiveness, transfer files faster, and improve your workflow with NVMe and Western Digital nCache 4.0 Technologies.
- Move your data to your new drive with free downloadable Acronis True Image for Western Digital data migration software.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The mini PC will not start or shows less RAM
- Power down, disconnect the adapter and reseat one module at a time.
- Confirm the notch, insertion angle and latch engagement.
- Test each module in each documented socket if the manual permits it; this can distinguish a seating problem from a module or socket problem.
- Recheck DDR generation, voltage, capacity and supported speed against the exact model guide.
- If mixed modules are installed, try the matched pair alone. Unequal capacities may use flex mode, and the slowest module controls maximum speed according to HP.
The M.2 SSD is absent
- Confirm that the slot supports the drive’s protocol: NVMe and SATA are not interchangeable merely because both use M.2.
- Check the connector key and ensure the drive is fully inserted before it is lowered onto the standoff.
- Verify that the module length matches the available 2242 or 2280 mounting point.
- Reinstall the retaining screw in the correct standoff without bending the board.
- If the drive is behind a shield or thermal pad, check that the pad or shield is positioned as documented and that the cover is not preventing contact.
A 2.5-inch drive is not detected
- Confirm that the model actually includes a bay, bracket and SATA daughterboard or ribbon cable.
- Reseat both ends of the SATA connection and inspect the cable for pinching.
- Check the drive thickness and mounting orientation.
- Use firmware detection first; only then initialize or format the drive in the operating system.
The cover will not close
Stop rather than tightening screws against resistance. Look for a tall SSD heatsink, a displaced shield, a cable routed over a fan or a module not fully seated in its socket. The manual’s clearance guidance outranks generic heatsink recommendations.
Plan capacity and performance without overgeneralizing
Choose capacity from the model’s documented maximum and your workload, not from a universal mini-PC specification. A socketed design offers a future memory path; soldered LPDDR does not. For two-slot systems, equal-capacity modules are the simplest route to dual-channel operation when supported. A single larger module may leave a slot empty, while unequal modules can invoke flex mode.
For storage, decide whether the new drive replaces the boot drive or adds a separate volume. Replacement requires a cloning or clean-install plan and a rollback path using the original drive. An added drive requires an available slot or bay, the correct cable and enough physical clearance. NVMe performance claims are irrelevant if the mini PC’s M.2 connector is SATA-only, and a fast drive cannot overcome a platform’s interface limit.
