You can upgrade a PS4 without losing progress, but the safe method depends on whether you replace the internal drive or add a USB extended-storage drive. For an internal replacement, sync trophies, make a complete USB backup (or copy saves to USB/cloud), install the new 2.5-inch drive, reinstall PS4 system software, then restore your data. For the least invasive expansion, connect a compatible USB hard drive and format it as extended storage; your applications can move there, while saves, themes, and captures remain on the PS4’s system storage.

What “without losing your games” requires

A PS4 internal-drive swap is not a simple plug-in upgrade. Sony requires the operating system to be reinstalled after the old hard drive is removed. Your games and saves are protected only if you copy or back them up before opening the console, then restore them after setup.

There are two safe approaches:

  • Replace the internal drive: gives permanent capacity inside the console, but requires model-specific disassembly, a system-software reinstall and a restore process.
  • Add USB extended storage: expands application capacity without opening the PS4. It is quicker, but the drive must remain connected for games installed on it, and it cannot hold saved data, themes or screenshots and video clips.

Sony Interactive Entertainment puts the reason for the preparation plainly: “It is important to back up saved data to avoid losing any game progress.”

Choose the right upgrade route

Route Best for What it stores Main trade-off
Internal 2.5-inch HDD or SSD replacement A permanent increase in the console’s internal capacity System storage, applications, saves and settings after restoration Requires opening the PS4, reinstalling system software and restoring data
USB extended-storage HDD The fastest, least-invasive way to add room for games Applications and add-ons; applications can be moved between storage locations Saves, themes and captures stay outside extended storage, and the drive must stay connected to run its applications

Choose the internal route when you want a self-contained console, have a safe place to store a full backup and are comfortable following the instructions for your exact PS4 model. Choose extended storage when you mainly need more room for installed games and do not want to open the console.

Prepare before removing anything

Identify the PS4 model

The replacement procedure differs by hardware family. Sony’s internal-drive guide covers the CUH-7000 series (PS4 Pro), CUH-2015 series (PS4 Slim) and CUH-1200, CUH-1110 and CUH-1000 series. Check the model designation on the console before ordering a drive or following a removal diagram; do not assume that instructions for one family apply to another.

Gather the required equipment

  • A compatible 2.5-inch replacement HDD or SSD for the internal route.
  • A long Phillips screwdriver, which Sony specifies for the internal-drive procedure.
  • USB storage for the backup and a separate USB device for the system-software reinstallation file if needed.
  • A computer for preparing the official full reinstallation file.

Keep the original drive until the new installation has booted and your games and saves have been verified. It is your fallback if a backup is incomplete or the replacement drive is not recognized.

Use a suitable backup USB drive

The PS4 Backup and Restore tool can include games and applications, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. The USB backup drive must use FAT32 or exFAT, and it must have at least twice the space occupied by the backup file. The PS4 will not be able to complete a backup when the destination is too small, even if its advertised capacity appears close to the amount of data on the console.

Before starting, check the free space on the backup drive and remove or move unrelated files if necessary. Do not disconnect it during the backup.

Sync trophies separately

Trophies are handled through PlayStation Network rather than the normal backup selection. On the PS4, open the Trophies area, press the OPTIONS button and choose Sync Trophies With PSN. Complete this step while the old drive still works. A trophy list that has not synchronized may not be recoverable from a drive backup alone.

Internal-drive replacement: the complete sequence

1. Make the backup

  1. Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
  2. Select the data categories you want to include. For the closest like-for-like migration, include games and applications, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings when the backup drive has enough room.
  3. Start the backup and wait for the PS4 to report completion before removing the USB drive.

If you do not want to create a full backup, at minimum copy saved data to USB or make sure your PlayStation Plus cloud saves are current. A full backup is more convenient because it can also carry applications and settings, but any games or applications absent from the restored backup will need to be installed again.

2. Power down and remove the old drive

Shut down the PS4 completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, unplug the cables and follow the Sony removal instructions for the model family you identified. The internal drive sits in a mounting bracket. Remove the bracket, transfer it to the replacement drive and reinstall the mounting screws without forcing them. Keep the original drive and its screws together until the migration is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not begin the hardware work while the console is powered or while a USB backup is still running. A drive that is not seated correctly can prevent the PS4 from starting or cause the reinstall process to fail.

3. Prepare the system-software USB

After the swap, the PS4 needs the official full system-software reinstallation file. On a computer, place that file on a USB storage device with at least 1 GB of free space, following Sony’s folder and file instructions for the reinstallation package. This is the full reinstall file, not merely a routine update file.

Keep the reinstallation USB available when you first power on the console. The PS4 cannot complete initial setup with an empty replacement drive until its system software has been installed.

  • 1TB Capacity, 9.5mm High, Rotation Speed of 5400RPM
  • 16MB Buffer, SATA 6.0Gb/s Interface, 2.5inch Hard Drive
  • Works for PS4 (Pro, Slim, Original) Game Console HDD replacement / upgrade (835GB available storage space on PS4, rest capacity is used for System)
  • PS4 Hard Drive installation & Playstation firmware download instruction included

4. Install the system software

  1. Connect the USB device containing the full reinstallation file to the PS4.
  2. Start the console and enter the system-software reinstallation process as described in Sony’s model-specific guide.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the installation to finish without removing power or the USB device.
  4. Complete the initial setup and sign in to the PlayStation account you used before the drive replacement.

The reinstallation initializes the replacement drive as the PS4’s system storage. It does not, by itself, bring back your games or saves; those come from the backup, USB saved-data copy or PlayStation Plus cloud storage in the next stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Restore your data

For a full migration, open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore, select the backup USB device and choose the backup set. Let the restore finish before launching games or changing storage settings.

If you copied only saved data, use the PS4’s saved-data copy workflow to copy it from USB to the console. Sony’s USB saved-data process requires you to sign in with the same account that was used when the data was copied. Using a different account can make the files unavailable to the profile that needs them.

PlayStation Plus cloud saves are another recovery path. Sign in with the same PlayStation account, open the saved-data controls and download the cloud copies to the replacement system. Cloud availability depends on having previously uploaded the saves; it is not a substitute for a backup that was never synchronized.

6. Reinstall anything missing and verify the result

  • Check the Games library and confirm that important titles appear.
  • Start a few games and verify that their expected save slots and progress are present.
  • Check screenshots, video clips and settings if those categories were included in the backup.
  • Reinstall games or applications that were not included in the backup, or move them from a prepared extended-storage drive.

Do not erase or repurpose the old internal drive until the titles you care about launch and show the correct progress. This verification is the point at which you can still return to the original hardware if a backup or restore was incomplete.

Adding a USB drive as extended storage

Check the compatibility limits

For PS4 extended storage, Sony specifies an external HDD using SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, with a capacity from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Sony also warns that operation is not guaranteed for every HDD model, even when its headline capacity appears to fit the range.

  • Use a direct connection to a PS4 USB port; Sony does not support a USB hub for extended storage.
  • Use a drive within the 250 GB–8 TB range and with SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
  • Expect applications and add-ons to use the extended drive, not saved data, themes or screenshots and video clips.

Format the drive

  1. Connect the external HDD directly to the PS4.
  2. Open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices.
  3. Select the drive and choose Format as Extended Storage.
  4. Confirm the warning. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.

The PS4 controls the drive after formatting. A drive used as extended storage is not a general-purpose USB backup disk until it is reformatted for another use, so do not keep unique personal files on it.

Set the install location and move games

  1. Open Settings > Storage.
  2. Press the OPTIONS button and choose Application Install Location.
  3. Select Extended Storage for future application installs.
  4. Use the storage-management controls to move existing applications between system storage and extended storage as needed.

Moving an application does not move its saved data into the extended drive. Saves remain governed by the PS4’s system-storage and cloud/USB backup workflows.

Disconnect it safely

Stop using the drive through the PS4’s storage menu before unplugging it. If an application is installed on a disconnected extended-storage drive, that application will not start until the drive is reconnected. Repeatedly unplugging the drive without using the console’s stop function risks data corruption and can force the PS4 to repair or reformat the device.

Which route preserves the least hassle?

Choose an internal replacement when

  • You want one self-contained console with no external drive attached.
  • You are willing to perform a model-specific hardware swap and a system-software reinstall.
  • You can create a full backup and have time to restore or reinstall content.
  • You need the replacement drive to hold the PS4’s system storage, applications, saves and settings after restoration.

Choose extended storage when

  • You want additional game capacity without opening the PS4.
  • You can leave the drive connected whenever you play titles installed on it.
  • You are comfortable keeping saves, themes and captures on the console’s system storage or in separate USB/cloud backups.
  • Your drive meets Sony’s direct-connect, USB-speed and 250 GB–8 TB capacity requirements.

Troubleshooting after an upgrade

The PS4 cannot see the internal replacement drive

Power the console down, disconnect it and reseat the drive in its mounting bracket. Confirm that the bracket and screws are installed as required for your model. If the console still cannot proceed, reinstall the original drive to determine whether the issue is the replacement hardware or the installation media. Keep the model-specific Sony instructions in front of you; the CUH-7000, CUH-2015 and CUH-1200/1110/1000 procedures are not interchangeable.

The system-software reinstall does not start

Check that the USB contains the official full reinstallation file, that the device has at least 1 GB of free space and that the file and folder layout matches Sony’s instructions. Try a different USB storage device if the PS4 cannot read the first one. Do not substitute a normal update package for the full reinstall required after an internal-drive replacement.

The restore finishes but a game has no progress

Confirm that the save was included in the backup or copied separately before the old drive was removed. Then sign in with the same PlayStation account used for the original save. If the save was stored in PlayStation Plus cloud storage, download the cloud copy after signing in. A game installation alone does not recreate a missing save.

Games are missing after a full restore

Review the backup contents and available space. The Backup and Restore tool can include applications, but a backup that omitted them will restore settings and saves without recreating every installation. Reinstall absent games or move them from a prepared extended-storage drive. Keep the console online if the title requires a digital download or update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external drive reports an error

Connect it directly rather than through a USB hub and verify that it falls within Sony’s 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum and uses SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later. If the PS4 asks to format the drive, stop and confirm that no files still need to be copied from it; formatting erases its contents. Use the PS4 menu to stop the device before disconnecting it in the future.

Capacity and performance expectations

The documented benefit of either route is more usable storage. Sony’s support guidance does not provide an official percentage for loading-time improvement from installing an SSD, so a specific speed increase should not be promised. An SSD can be selected as the internal replacement if it is compatible with the PS4’s 2.5-inch internal-drive requirements, but the evidence here does not establish a guaranteed loading-time percentage.

Extended storage is often the simpler answer when the goal is to keep more applications installed. Internal replacement is the cleaner long-term arrangement when you do not want an attached drive, but it creates a migration project: backup, hardware work, reinstallation and restore. In both cases, preserving saves depends on a separate, verified backup path rather than on the drive’s capacity alone.
