To change a 7 Days to Die dedicated server version, stop the server, back up saves and configuration, then run SteamCMD against dedicated-server app ID 294420. Leave out -beta for the current stable branch; add the exact published branch name for an experimental build or rollback. Start the server, confirm its reported build, and make every player use the same branch. If SteamCMD reports success but files remain old, refresh Steam product information with +app_info_update 1 and retry.

What the version change actually does

A 7 Days to Die server version is determined by the Steam branch installed in its server directory. The public branch receives stable releases. Experimental and pinned branches contain specific development or historical builds. A downgrade is therefore not a generic “restore old files” operation: it means selecting a branch that Steam still publishes and downloading that branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dedicated server and the retail game are separate Steam applications. SteamCMD must update app ID 294420. App ID 251570 is the retail game and is not the dedicated-server target. Using the wrong ID can leave the server directory unchanged while making the command appear to have completed normally.

As of 5 October 2026, version V3.3.0 is the current stable build on the default branch. That status can change, so verify the branch shown by Steam before scheduling a maintenance window.

Choose an update strategy before touching the installation

Approach Branch control Rollback options Backup and downtime Client coordination
Self-hosted SteamCMD, in place Full control; you specify the branch in the command Any still-published branch; no access to branches removed from Steam Back up saves, configuration and mods; stop the process during the update Every player must select the identical branch and compatible build
Self-hosted SteamCMD, separate directory Run stable and test branches side by side Switch by changing the service path or startup script Requires extra disk space; enables shorter cutover downtime Players still need to move to the branch used by the active instance
Managed hosting panel Choose the branch exposed by the provider’s panel Limited to branches the provider offers Provider handles SteamCMD; still export your own saves and settings Restart after setting the branch, then coordinate client changes
Mod-pinned server Must follow the overhaul’s supported game line Use the supported branch, even if it is older than stable Backups are essential because updates may replace configuration files Game branch and mod versions must match on server and every client

If you are changing versions to support a mod, check the mod or overhaul’s documented branch first. Moving to the newest stable build can break a modded world even when the server itself updates correctly.

Prepare a self-hosted server

Announce maintenance and stop cleanly

Tell players when the server will be unavailable. Save or shut down from the server console using the normal graceful-stop procedure, then confirm that the dedicated-server process has exited. Updating while files are locked can produce partial downloads or a corrupt installation.

Back up data outside the installation directory

Copy the entire world-save location, server configuration files and every mod folder to a separate disk or directory. Keep at least one dated backup that the update process cannot overwrite. Older installation guidance warns that updates can replace configuration files, so do not rely on Steam’s installation directory as your only copy.

  • World data: copy all saves, player data and generated-world metadata.
  • Configuration: preserve server settings, permissions, whitelist and startup scripts.
  • Mods: archive the complete mod folders and record their versions.
  • Deployment details: note the server path, ports, service account and launch arguments.

Check prerequisites

  • Ensure enough free disk space for a new build and Steam’s temporary files.
  • Run SteamCMD as the operating-system account that owns the server files, or correct ownership afterward.
  • Confirm that the path you will pass to +force_install_dir is the actual dedicated-server directory.
  • Record the branch currently installed so you can identify an unintended change.

Upgrade to the stable branch with SteamCMD

For the public stable branch, omit any beta selector. Replace <server-path> with the absolute path to the server installation:

steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
  1. Open a terminal on the machine that hosts the server.
  2. Run the command exactly as shown, with your real server path.
  3. Wait for SteamCMD to finish. Re-running the command is safe and downloads only changed files when the installation is already current.
  4. Review the output for download errors, disk-space failures or permission errors rather than relying only on the final success line.
  5. Start the dedicated server with your usual service or launch script.
  6. Read the server console or log and record the reported build number.

Do not use app ID 251570 in this command. That ID represents the retail game client, not the dedicated-server package.

Install an experimental or pinned branch

Steam branch names are exact strings. Use the branch currently listed by Steam, not a name copied from an old guide. The command format is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quit

Documented examples include latest_experimental, v3.2.0, v1.0 and older alpha names. These are examples, not a permanent catalog. Branches can be renamed or removed; the inventory checked on 17 September 2026 may no longer be identical when you perform the change.

Find the live branch name

Open the dedicated server’s Steam properties and inspect the Betas list, or print the application’s current Steam information with the Steam tools available on your host. Copy the branch name character-for-character, including punctuation and capitalization. If Steam no longer lists the desired branch, SteamCMD cannot download it.

Switch from stable to experimental

  1. Stop the server and create the backup described above.
  2. Confirm the exact branch name in Steam’s current Betas list.
  3. Run the beta command with -beta <branch_name> on the +app_update 294420 operation.
  4. Start the server and verify the build in its console or log.
  5. Have every player select that same branch before connecting.

Downgrade or roll back to an older build

A rollback uses the same beta command. The only supported targets are branches that Steam still publishes.

  1. Stop the server and preserve a backup of saves, settings and mods.
  2. Identify a still-published branch that matches the client or mod requirement.
  3. Run:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quit
  1. Start the server and verify that the reported build is the requested one.
  2. Move every client to the identical Steam branch and compatible mod set.

To return to the public stable branch, run the stable command again and omit -beta. If the historical branch has been removed, there is no SteamCMD switch that can retrieve it; choose a supported branch or obtain an independently maintained installation archive from a source you trust.

  • Unlimited hours of gameplay
  • Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
  • Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
  • Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
  • Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes

Fix “already up to date” when the server is still old

SteamCMD can print “Success! App already up to date” or “Success, No Error” while leaving an old build in place when Steam product-information (PICS) metadata is stale. Force a fresh metadata update:

steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_info_update 1 +app_update 294420 validate +quit

For an experimental branch, keep the beta selector on the app-update operation:

steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_info_update 1 +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quit

After the command finishes, start the server and check its actual console or log build. Do not treat SteamCMD’s success wording as proof until the running process reports the expected version.

Verify compatibility before allowing players back in

Check the server

  • Read the startup banner or log for the build number and branch.
  • Confirm the expected configuration, world and mods loaded.
  • Watch for missing assemblies, mod-load exceptions or world-conversion warnings.

Check the clients

A fully updated client can still be incompatible if it is on a different branch. Every player must select the same Steam branch as the server, then allow Steam to finish downloading that branch before launching the game. “Both updated” is not sufficient when one side is stable and the other is experimental or pinned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test with a controlled connection

Join with an administrator account first. Confirm that the world loads, permissions work and a player can enter and leave without errors. Only then announce that the server is ready.

Managed hosting: change the branch in the panel first

Many managed hosts run SteamCMD automatically whenever the server starts or restarts. In that environment, editing files manually may be undone on the next restart.

  1. Open the server control panel and locate the game version, branch or beta selector.
  2. Choose the exact stable or experimental branch you intend to run.
  3. Save the setting before restarting. The hosting guide updated 16 June 2026 documents this order because a restart can otherwise preserve an unintended experimental or pinned line.
  4. Restart the server and wait for the provider’s update task to finish.
  5. Read the panel log or server console to verify the resulting build.
  6. Tell players to select the same branch and update their clients.

Export saves, configuration and mods even when the provider advertises automatic backups. Provider retention periods and restore procedures vary, and a branch change can still overwrite settings.

Mods and world compatibility

Version alignment has two dimensions: the game branch and the mod versions. A modded server requires compatible files on the server and every client. Overhaul projects may intentionally pin to an older branch; that is a compatibility requirement, not evidence that SteamCMD failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before upgrading a modded server

  • Check the overhaul’s supported 7 Days to Die branch.
  • Confirm that each dependency has a release for that branch.
  • Back up the world before allowing any conversion or migration.
  • Schedule client mod updates for the same maintenance window.

After changing branches

Compare the server’s mod directory with the versions distributed to players. Remove or replace incompatible files according to the mod author’s instructions, then test on a copy of the world when possible. If the world fails to load, stop the server and restore the pre-change backup rather than repeatedly starting it on an unsupported branch.

When an in-place update is risky

Use a separate installation directory when you need to test a branch, preserve a known-good production build or reduce cutover time. Install the alternate branch into a different path, copy only the configuration and world data you intentionally want to test, and point a test launch script at that directory. Keep the production directory untouched until the test passes. This consumes additional disk space but makes rollback a path change instead of a second download.

Do not run two instances against the same live world-save files. Give each instance its own save location, ports and logs, or shut one instance down before starting the other.

Failure recovery checklist

SteamCMD cannot write files

  • Check free disk space, including the filesystem used for temporary downloads.
  • Run SteamCMD as the account that owns the server directory.
  • Verify that no server process is still holding files open.
  • Confirm that <server-path> is correct and writable.

The installation manifest appears inconsistent

If repeated attempts leave the installation in an inconsistent state, the troubleshooting guidance recommends removing appmanifest_294420.acf and retrying the update. Stop the server first, keep your external backups, delete only that manifest from the Steam installation metadata, and rerun the appropriate stable or beta command. Steam will rebuild the manifest while validating the files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server starts but players receive an incompatible-version error

  • Compare the server’s reported build with the client’s build.
  • Check that both sides selected the same branch, not merely the newest available update.
  • Verify that a managed-host panel did not switch branches on restart.
  • For modded play, compare mod versions and dependencies as well as the game branch.

The desired old branch is missing

SteamCMD cannot install a branch that is no longer published. Choose a currently listed branch that satisfies the mod or client requirement, or retain a separate known-good installation you created while that branch was available. Do not promise a rollback based solely on an old branch name from a guide.

Operational habits that prevent version outages

  • Record the active branch, build number, mod set and update date after every maintenance window.
  • Keep backups outside the installation directory and test that a world can actually be restored.
  • Use a staging directory for experimental builds before changing production.
  • Schedule client updates immediately after the server change and publish the exact branch name to players.
  • Review Steam’s current Betas list before planning a downgrade; availability changes over time.
  • Keep the dedicated-server app ID (294420) in scripts and documentation so nobody substitutes the retail app ID.

Quick command reference

Task Command Use when
Stable update steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit Installing or returning to the public stable branch
Experimental or pinned branch steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quit The exact branch is currently published and required by your clients or mods
Refresh stale product information steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_info_update 1 +app_update 294420 validate +quit SteamCMD claims success but the running server remains on an old build
Refresh and install a beta branch steamcmd +force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_info_update 1 +app_update 294420 -beta <branch_name> validate +quit Switching branches while correcting stale Steam metadata

Final decision rule

Use the stable command for a normal upgrade, the beta form for an experimental build or supported rollback, and the metadata-refresh form when SteamCMD’s success message conflicts with the running server. In every case, stop first, back up externally, verify the build after startup and put the server and all clients on the same branch before reopening the world.
