There is no universally safe latest command. The correct upgrade depends on your Linux distribution, how MySQL was installed, the release series enabled in its repository, and the supported path from your current version. Take a tested backup or VPS snapshot first, verify the upgrade path, then use the package manager for your operating system and perform a full service and application check after MySQL restarts.
What “latest MySQL” means on a VPS
MySQL repositories expose several release series rather than one target shared by every server. The official APT repository currently presents choices such as MySQL 8.4, MySQL 8.0 and an innovation series. A Yum repository can expose a different set depending on the distribution and repository channel. A VPS image may also contain a distribution-maintained package instead of Oracle’s repository package.

Do not change a repository blindly because a package manager reports a newer package. In particular, never select a repository series lower than the version already running. Whether a 9.x series is available, supported on your distribution, or appropriate for your application must be confirmed in the repository configuration and the corresponding MySQL upgrade documentation.
Oracle’s guidance gives the governing rule for major upgrades: “As a general rule, to upgrade from one release series to another, go to the next series rather than skipping a series.” A jump from 5.7 directly to a much newer series can therefore require intermediate upgrades, an export and import, or a replacement server.

Pre-upgrade inventory: identify exactly what is installed
Log in with an account that can use sudo and record the current state before changing repositories or packages. Keep this information with the maintenance ticket so you can compare it after the change.
Record the server and MySQL versions
mysql --version
mysql -NBe 'SELECT VERSION();'
cat /etc/os-release
uname -mThe client version printed by mysql --version and the server result from SELECT VERSION() can differ, so capture both. The operating-system release and CPU architecture determine which repository packages can be installed.
Determine package origin
Find out whether the server is Oracle MySQL, MariaDB, Percona Server, a distribution build, or a previous installation from the MySQL APT or Yum repository. On Debian or Ubuntu, inspect installed packages and enabled sources with your normal package-query tools; on RHEL-family systems, inspect enabled Yum or DNF repositories and installed package names. Also note whether the service is called mysql or mysqld.
The MySQL APT in-place procedure assumes an installation from the MySQL APT repository. It is not a direct upgrade method for a nonnative repository distribution such as MariaDB or Percona packages. If you find a fork or a vendor build, follow that product’s migration instructions and do not mix its packages with an Oracle MySQL repository.
Map dependencies and operating conditions
Write down replication partners, read replicas, backup agents, scheduled events, monitoring checks, connection pools, and applications that use the database. Check free space on the data volume, the root filesystem, and any directory used for package caches or temporary files. Package unpacking, temporary tables, redo logs and a logical dump can all need space at the same time.
Set a maintenance window long enough for a restart and validation. A small VPS may spend considerably longer on system-table work than on package download, particularly after a major-version change.

Create a recovery point you can actually restore
Do not begin an upgrade without a verified recovery path. Create a logical dump or physical backup appropriate to your workload, and take a provider snapshot when the VPS platform supports consistent snapshots. A snapshot is useful for rapid rollback, but it does not replace a tested database backup: confirm what is included, when it was taken, and how to attach or restore it.

For a logical backup, include routines, triggers, events, users and grants when your backup method supports them. Record the commands, credentials and storage location needed for restoration. Check that the dump can be read and that its destination has sufficient capacity. If you rely on replication or a backup agent, verify that it has completed successfully rather than assuming a scheduled job ran.
Keep the old package and repository details in the change record. In-place downgrades across major MySQL versions are generally not a safe rollback technique; restoration from a snapshot or backup, or rebuilding a previous-version server and importing the data, is normally the recovery route.
Validate the supported version path
Use the official MySQL upgrade chapter for your exact starting and target series before selecting a repository channel. Check preparation requirements, removed features, authentication changes, reserved words, data-dictionary changes and storage-engine notes for every intermediate series.

For example, the documented APT example moves from 5.6 to 5.7 and then to 8.0 instead of skipping 5.7. Treat that as a path rule, not as permission to copy the same sequence to every version combination. A newer source release may have a different supported route.
If the required path involves an intermediate release, plan separate maintenance stages. Back up and verify after each stage, and do not remove the ability to boot the intermediate server until its SQL and application checks pass.
Choose an upgrade strategy

An in-place update is the shortest procedure, but it is not automatically the least risky. A replacement server gives you a clean rollback target and lets you test the new version while the old server remains available. The official manual includes copying databases to another machine as an alternative operational path.
Upgrade Debian or Ubuntu with APT
1. Select the correct MySQL APT series
Install or configure the official MySQL APT repository for your exact Debian or Ubuntu release, then select the intended MySQL series in its configuration dialog. Do this only after checking the supported path and confirming that the selected series is not older than the installed server. If the machine uses distribution packages or a fork, stop and use the matching vendor procedure instead of replacing its repository.

2. Refresh package metadata
sudo apt-get updateRead the output for repository errors, unsupported release names, signature failures and held packages. Fix those conditions before installing MySQL; proceeding with stale or partial metadata can leave related packages on inconsistent versions.
3. Explicitly install the server package
sudo apt-get install mysql-serverThe explicit mysql-server install matters. The MySQL APT documentation notes that a general apt-get upgrade may update only MySQL libraries and development packages. Installing mysql-server requests the server, client and common database files when newer versions are available.
Read any configuration-file prompts carefully. Preserve intentional local settings, but compare them with the new package’s recommended defaults. The package operation restarts MySQL automatically, so connections will be interrupted during the change.
4. Confirm the package result
After APT finishes, record the installed package versions and the server’s reported version. Do not treat a successful package transaction as proof that applications can use the database; complete the verification sequence below.
Upgrade RHEL-family systems with Yum or DNF
1. Enable the matching Yum repository channel
Configure the official MySQL Yum repository for the installed RHEL-family distribution and enable the release series that follows your supported path. Repository channels determine whether the server stays on a particular series or moves to another one, so inspect the enabled modules and repository priorities before updating.
2. Apply the update
sudo yum updateOn a DNF-based system, use:
sudo dnf upgradeTo update one component rather than every eligible package, target the installed server package, for example:
sudo dnf upgrade mysql-serverUse the package name actually installed on your machine if it differs. Review the transaction summary for removals, repository changes and dependency replacements before accepting it.

3. Account for the automatic restart
The Yum procedure restarts the MySQL server as part of the update. Existing client sessions will disconnect, and applications that do not reconnect automatically can remain offline even after the service is running. Keep the maintenance window open until SQL and application checks have passed.
Verify MySQL after the restart
Check the service and startup log
sudo systemctl status mysql
sudo systemctl status mysqld
sudo journalctl -u mysql --since '30 minutes ago'
sudo journalctl -u mysqld --since '30 minutes ago'Only one service name will normally apply. Use the one shown by your distribution. Read the MySQL error log as well, using the path configured on the server. Look for failed InnoDB recovery, permission errors, incompatible options, plugin-loading failures, aborted upgrades and tables that need attention.
Confirm the running version and basic SQL access
mysql -NBe 'SELECT VERSION();'
mysql -NBe 'SELECT @@version_comment, @@default_authentication_plugin;'Connect with the same administrative method used by your applications and test representative reads and writes in a non-destructive way. Confirm that expected schemas, tables, views, routines, events and scheduled jobs are present. Check users, grants and authentication plugins because a major release can expose clients that cannot negotiate the new authentication method.
Exercise the application path
Run a health check through each important application, worker and reporting process. Test connection-pool recycling, transactions, writes, background jobs and any code that uses prepared statements or stored routines. A command-line login proves that the server accepts one client; it does not prove that every application driver, character set and privilege still works.
Recheck replication, backups and monitoring
For replicated installations, inspect source and replica status, relay-log errors, replication lag and GTID or position continuity using the topology’s normal commands. Confirm that backup agents can connect and that the next backup completes. Ensure monitoring sees the new service process, disk usage, replication state and error rate. Save the final SELECT VERSION() result and package list in the change record.
Do you still need to run mysql_upgrade?
Not as a routine step on MySQL 8.0.16 and later. The server performs the former mysql_upgrade work during startup, so adding a separate command can be unnecessary and misleading.
Older MySQL installations may still require the utility after the server restarts. Follow the manual for that exact version and run it only when the documented procedure calls for it. Do not copy an old runbook that always invokes mysql_upgrade onto a current 8.0 installation without checking the release behavior.

Common failure modes and recovery actions
The package manager proposes a fork or removes MySQL
Stop the transaction if the candidate package changes from Oracle MySQL to MariaDB, Percona Server or another fork, or if it removes the existing server unexpectedly. Restore the original repository configuration, refresh metadata and consult the package vendor’s migration guide. Mixing repositories can replace client libraries and server files in ways that a normal rollback cannot undo.

APT or DNF reports held, excluded or conflicting packages
Inspect held packages, version locks, enabled modules and repository priorities. Resolve the conflict deliberately, then rerun the package-manager simulation or transaction preview. Do not force removal of database packages while the data directory is mounted unless the documented recovery plan covers it.
MySQL will not start
Keep the old server stopped while collecting the service status, journal and MySQL error log. Typical causes include an invalid option, changed file ownership, a full filesystem, an unavailable plugin or an upgrade that requires an intermediate release. Do not delete redo logs or system tables as an experiment. If the supported fix is not clear, restore the snapshot or rebuild the previous-version server from the verified backup.
Applications fail authentication after the upgrade
Compare the affected account’s authentication plugin with the capabilities of its connector and framework. Upgrade the client library or apply the documented account-migration method for your MySQL release; do not weaken authentication globally just to make one old client connect. Test every service account separately.
There is not enough disk space
Check the data volume, root filesystem, package cache, temporary directory and backup destination. Package downloads, unpacked files, logs and temporary upgrade tables can require additional space even when the data directory itself has not grown. Free space safely or extend the volume before retrying, and verify that no partial package transaction remains.

Check credentials, service names, network endpoints, binary-log settings, replication coordinates and agent logs. Restart only the affected component after recording its error. If a replica has diverged or a backup chain is invalid, pause the cutover and repair it from a known-good position or rebuild it rather than declaring the upgrade complete.
When an in-place upgrade is the wrong choice
Use dump-and-restore or a replacement VPS when the current installation is a fork, the required version jump is not supported, the operating system is too old for the target packages, or the application cannot tolerate uncertainty about rollback. A blue-green build also makes it easier to test configuration, authentication, schema checks and application behavior before changing production traffic.
For a replacement, install the target series on the new VPS, harden it, restore a copy of the data, run the full application test suite, and synchronize changes with replication or a final controlled dump. During cutover, stop writes on the old server, complete synchronization, switch connection endpoints, and retain the old machine until monitoring and backups confirm normal operation.
A practical change record
Document the operating-system release, architecture, current and target MySQL versions, package origin, enabled repository series, backup or snapshot identifier, free-space readings, maintenance start and end times, package transaction output, service-log result, SQL test result, application checks, replication state and the person who approved the change. This record turns the next upgrade into a known procedure instead of a guess.
The safest definition of success is not that APT, Yum or DNF completed. Success means the server is running the intended series, its logs are clean, administrative and application connections work, representative data operations succeed, replication and backups are healthy, and a tested recovery point still exists.
