Yes. If you own It Takes Two for Nintendo Switch, Electronic Arts says you can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition at no charge. Digital owners start in Nintendo eShop; owners of a physical cartridge launch the game and select its in-game eShop icon. The Switch 2 edition was announced for October 15, 2026. Because eShop availability and product pages can vary by country, confirm that the listing appears in your regional store before starting.

The upgrade applies only to the Nintendo Switch edition. A copy bought for another platform does not qualify, although the Switch 2 edition itself supports online play with Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC players.

Who qualifies for the free upgrade?

Your eligibility depends on owning the Nintendo Switch version, not on where you bought the console or which other platforms you use.

Your copy Upgrade route What you need to know
Digital Nintendo Switch copy Nintendo eShop Open the eShop, select It Takes Two, and use the upgrade option shown for your account.
Physical Nintendo Switch cartridge Game menu, then Nintendo eShop Insert the cartridge, start the game on Switch 2, and select the in-game eShop icon. Keep the cartridge available for future play when it supplies the base entitlement.
Xbox, PlayStation or PC copy Not eligible for this Nintendo upgrade EA says the free path is tied to ownership of the Nintendo Switch edition.

The upgrade is an entitlement for the Switch edition you already own; it is not a second copy purchased through a separate retail transaction. Nintendo accounts, regional store settings and the ownership format still determine whether the upgrade appears.

Check the release and eShop listing first

EA’s support page lists October 15, 2026 as the release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and says preorders were unavailable. The information supplied for this guide was captured on October 13, before that date, so it did not establish that the listing was already downloadable. After launch, open your country’s Nintendo eShop and look for the Switch 2 edition or its upgrade option. A product page can appear at a different time in another region.

  • Use the Nintendo account that owns the digital Switch copy, or the account that is authorized to use the physical game.
  • Connect the console to the internet so Nintendo eShop can verify ownership and deliver the upgrade data.
  • Install current system and game updates before troubleshooting a missing upgrade.
  • If your entitlement is digital, make sure the relevant virtual game card is loaded on the Switch 2 console.

EA does not list a purchase price for the upgrade because the upgrade for existing Nintendo Switch owners is free. The price of a new physical game, if you do not own it, is separate and can vary by region and date.

Upgrade a digital Nintendo Switch copy

Digital ownership is handled directly through Nintendo eShop. The wording of the button can differ by region, but the process is the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
  2. Choose the Nintendo account that owns your digital copy of It Takes Two.
  3. Search for It Takes Two and open its product page. Check that the page identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 edition or an upgrade for an existing Nintendo Switch owner.
  4. Select the displayed upgrade option and follow the on-screen confirmation. The charge for an eligible owner should be zero.
  5. Allow the upgrade content and any required software update to download. Keep the console connected until the download finishes.
  6. Start the game from the HOME Menu and check the title screen. Nintendo’s support guidance says the title screen should identify the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition when the upgrade is active.

If the store shows only the original Switch version, do not buy another copy immediately. Verify the account, regional eShop and virtual game card status, then apply the troubleshooting sequence below.

Upgrade a physical Nintendo Switch copy

A cartridge owner reaches the upgrade through the game rather than relying only on an eShop search.

  1. Insert the original Nintendo Switch It Takes Two cartridge into the Switch 2 console.
  2. Start the game from the HOME Menu.
  3. Choose the in-game Nintendo eShop icon. EA directs physical owners to this icon to reach the upgrade listing.
  4. Confirm the Switch 2 upgrade shown by the store and complete the download.
  5. Install any additional game update requested by the console.
  6. Restart the game and verify that the title screen identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

The cartridge remains important after the download when it is the item that proves ownership of the base game. Keep it inserted whenever the console asks for the physical game. Downloading the upgrade does not turn a cartridge entitlement into a separate cartridge-free digital license.

What the Switch 2 edition changes

EA describes the Switch 2 version as a visual and performance upgrade rather than a different story or game. Its published specifications are limited to the points below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Nintendo Switch edition Nintendo Switch 2 edition Qualification
Docked frame rate 30 frames per second 60 frames per second EA presents this as the docked-mode comparison.
Native resolution Not stated by EA on the cited page 1080p native The 1080p figure is the Switch 2 specification supplied by EA.
Texture resolution Not stated Maximum texture resolution EA does not provide a numerical texture size.
Lighting and effects Original presentation Improved lighting and greater visual-effects complexity EA describes the improvement but does not give a benchmark or percentage.
Dynamic shadows Original presentation Improved dynamic-shadow quality No independent test result is available in the cited material.
Handheld frame rate and resolution Not stated in the cited comparison Not stated by EA on the reviewed page Do not assume the docked 60 FPS or 1080p figures apply to handheld play.

The original Switch edition is still a valid option on Switch 2. Nintendo’s product listing marks it as supported, with game behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. That compatibility matters if you need to match a friend who has not moved to the enhanced edition or if the upgraded download is not yet available in your region.

Choose the right edition for playing with friends

The edition selected on your console affects which players you can join. Decide based on your friend’s device and edition before launching an online session.

Online multiplayer also follows the subscription rules of the platform being used. Confirm that each participant has the applicable online service and an account permitted to play online before troubleshooting the game software. The upgrade itself does not remove those platform requirements.

How to downgrade temporarily for an original-Switch friend

Upgrading does not permanently lock you to the enhanced edition. If a friend is playing the original Switch version online, EA says you should use the original edition for that session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2.
  2. Open the It Takes Two product page associated with your account.
  3. Choose the option to download or launch the original Nintendo Switch edition when the store presents both editions.
  4. Start that edition and invite or join the friend using the original Switch version.
  5. When the session is over, return to the Switch 2 edition from the HOME Menu. The enhanced edition remains available; the downgrade is described by EA as free.

The exact labels can vary between regional eShops. If the original edition is not visible, check that the Switch 2 console is using the account that owns the game and that the correct virtual game card is loaded.

Use GameShare for a local Switch player

EA identifies Nintendo GameShare as a way for a Nintendo Switch player to join a local session hosted by someone using the Switch 2 edition. This is separate from ordinary online cross-platform play. Keep the consoles together and follow the GameShare prompts shown by the host’s Switch 2 system. The cited EA guidance describes this option for local play; it does not establish GameShare as a method for remote online sessions.

What to do when the upgrade does not appear

Nintendo’s general Switch 2 Edition support guidance provides a fixed order for missing upgrade content. Work through every step before assuming that your ownership is invalid.

  1. Update Switch 2 system software. Open System Settings and run the console’s system update. An outdated system can prevent an upgrade pack from being recognized.
  2. Check for a game update. Highlight It Takes Two on the HOME Menu, open the software options, and check for an update. Nintendo notes that a software update in addition to the Switch 2 upgrade pack may be required.
  3. Confirm the virtual game card. In the virtual game card area, verify that the purchased digital game is loaded on the Switch 2 console you are using. A purchase attached to another console will not necessarily be available until its virtual card is loaded there.
  4. Restart the console. Close the game completely, restart Switch 2, and reopen Nintendo eShop or the game. This forces the system to refresh ownership and update information.
  5. Check the title screen. Launch the game and look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition identification. If the title screen still shows only the original version, the upgrade has not been applied even if a download completed.

If you own the digital version but see no upgrade

  • Sign out of any secondary Nintendo account and reopen eShop with the purchasing account.
  • Check the account’s purchase history and virtual game card assignment.
  • Confirm that your regional store has passed the announced October 15, 2026 launch date and is displaying the Switch 2 product.
  • Install the game’s separate software update if the store offers one.

If you own the cartridge but the upgrade is missing

  • Insert the cartridge before starting the game; the in-game eShop route depends on the console recognizing the physical copy.
  • Use the eShop icon inside the game rather than searching only for a standalone upgrade listing.
  • Leave the cartridge inserted after downloading because it may still be required to launch the base game.
  • Restart Switch 2 with the cartridge inserted and check the title screen again.

If the game launches but looks unchanged

First verify the title-screen edition label, then check for a pending game update. The published EA specifications specifically promise 60 FPS in docked mode, 1080p native resolution and visual improvements for the Switch 2 edition; they do not specify handheld performance. Testing in handheld mode therefore cannot be used to conclude that the upgrade failed solely because a particular frame rate or resolution was not observed.

Can you keep playing the original version?

Yes. Nintendo lists the original Switch game as supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. You can therefore keep using the original edition when coordinating with an original-Switch friend, while using the Switch 2 edition for its listed docked performance and visual improvements. The two editions are a practical compatibility choice, not a requirement to repurchase the game.

Quick decision checklist

  • Own digital Switch copy: open Nintendo eShop with the purchasing account and select the displayed Switch 2 upgrade.
  • Own physical Switch copy: insert the cartridge, start the game, select its eShop icon, and retain the cartridge for play.
  • Own only another platform’s copy: the Nintendo upgrade path does not apply.
  • Want the enhanced presentation: use the Switch 2 edition for EA’s listed 60 FPS docked mode, 1080p native resolution and visual upgrades.
  • Joining an original-Switch player online: select the original Switch edition on Switch 2; EA says the downgrade is free.
  • Playing locally with a Switch player: use the GameShare method described by EA.
  • Upgrade missing: update system software, update the game, load the virtual game card, restart, and verify the title-screen label.

Bottom line

For an existing Nintendo Switch owner, upgrading It Takes Two to the Switch 2 edition is a free eShop process: digital owners begin in eShop, while cartridge owners enter through the game’s eShop icon. Check the regional listing after EA’s October 15, 2026 release date, keep a physical cartridge available when required, and switch back to the original edition whenever an online friend is still using the original Switch version.
