Sometimes you can extend a laptop’s useful life by adding RAM, replacing its storage, or both—but only when the exact model was designed for those upgrades. Many laptops have accessible memory slots or a replaceable drive. Others use soldered RAM, omit a serviceable drive, or classify the relevant component as technician-only. Buying a physically similar part without checking the model can leave you with an incompatible component or a damaged computer.
Start with the complete model name, machine type or product number, and region. Then use the manufacturer’s current manual, specifications and parts lookup to confirm the memory arrangement, maximum capacity, storage interface, physical dimensions and service classification before ordering anything.
What a RAM or storage upgrade can—and cannot—solve
RAM and storage address different constraints. RAM is the working memory used by applications while they run. Storage holds the operating system, applications and files. An upgrade is worthwhile only when it addresses the limitation you actually experience.

|---|---|---|---|
| RAM | Replaceable slots, memory type and generation, installed modules, maximum supported capacity and whether any memory is soldered | Provides more supported working memory when the laptop is running short of RAM | There is no accessible slot, the maximum is already installed, or the slowdown comes from another component |
| Storage | Replaceable-drive designation, interface, physical form factor, slot availability and supported capacity | Increases available space and can provide a newer drive when the original is replaceable | The drive is soldered or not owner-replaceable, or the actual problem is unrelated to storage capacity |
Neither upgrade guarantees that a laptop will feel like a new machine. The available documentation establishes how to determine compatibility and perform a basic memory installation; it does not establish a universal percentage improvement, a guaranteed saving compared with buying a laptop, or a point at which every owner should replace the computer.

Identify the exact laptop before you buy anything
A family name is not enough. A single product line can contain revisions with different slots, drives and service procedures. Record all of the following:
- Complete model name, including any generation or screen-size suffix.
- Machine type, product number or equivalent identifier shown on the chassis label or in system information.
- Serial number, if the manufacturer’s parts tool accepts one.
- Region in which the laptop was sold, since specifications and parts listings can vary by market.
- Current operating system and the memory and storage already installed.
On a Windows laptop, the model appears in Settings > System > About; the memory total can also be checked in Task Manager > Performance > Memory. Treat those screens as identification aids, not as a substitute for the manufacturer’s documentation. For any operating system, the label, firmware information or the manufacturer’s support page should confirm the complete identifier.
Use the model identifier consistently
Enter the complete product name or serial number into the manufacturer’s support site. Lenovo’s support guidance specifically recommends using the product name or serial number to find compatible parts and memory specifications. Do not order from a listing that identifies only a broad series such as “15-inch model” or “business laptop.”
Read the official manual and parts listing
Open the exact owner’s guide, specifications page and service or hardware-maintenance manual for your identifier and region. Search the document for these terms:
- “Maximum supported RAM” or “maximum memory.”
- “Memory module,” “SO-DIMM,” “socket” or “slot.”
- “Soldered,” “onboard” or “integrated memory.”
- “Drive,” “SSD,” “storage,” “interface” and the physical size or form factor.
- “Customer-replaceable unit,” “optional-service CRU” or “field-replaceable unit.”
Compare the manual with the manufacturer’s parts lookup or schematic. The listing should identify compatible modules or drives for your exact machine, not merely parts that fit the same physical space. If the manual and parts tool disagree, stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified technician; do not resolve the conflict by guessing.
Check whether the RAM is replaceable
Look for slots, not just a memory total
A system can report a particular amount of RAM without telling you whether it is removable. The manual should state the number of sockets, the installed arrangement and whether any portion is soldered. Check both the current capacity and the number of available slots before choosing a module or kit.

- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
If all memory is soldered, there is no ordinary plug-in RAM module to install. If one socket is free, the manufacturer’s capacity and matching requirements still apply. If every socket is occupied, an upgrade may require replacing an existing module rather than simply adding one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Manual finding | Practical meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One or more accessible memory sockets and a stated maximum above the installed amount | A RAM upgrade may be supported | Match the documented memory type, capacity and slot arrangement |
| Memory described as soldered or onboard with no socket | No normal owner-installed RAM module is available | Do not open the laptop looking for a removable module; consider storage or a replacement system instead |
| Socket exists but the manual designates the work technician-only | The part may be physically replaceable but not classified for routine self-service | Use the approved service route or a qualified technician |
| Maximum supported capacity is equal to the installed capacity | Additional RAM is not supported even if a slot appears available | Do not exceed the stated maximum |
Match every RAM specification
“Laptop RAM upgrade kit” is a useful search phrase, but it is not a specification. Before purchasing, match the exact memory generation and type, module format, capacity per slot, total maximum and the number of modules the manual permits. Lenovo’s support material and Crucial’s laptop-memory guidance both stress that requirements are specific to each laptop.
Do not assume that a module from another laptop, a desktop DIMM, or a kit with a larger advertised capacity will work. Keep a record of the page or part number that the manufacturer lists as compatible. If the parts lookup gives several choices, select only those that fit the documented slot and capacity configuration.
Check whether the storage can be replaced
Confirm the interface and physical format
The drive must match both the electrical interface and the physical dimensions specified for the exact model. A connector that looks similar is not proof of compatibility. Check whether the manual lists a removable SSD, the slot type, the supported length or form factor, and any capacity restrictions. Also check whether the machine has one drive position or more than one; the schematic and service manual, rather than a generic product review, are authoritative.
A Dell Latitude 5520 teardown result identifies an M.2 SSD 2280 slot in that specific model. That example cannot be generalized to every Latitude, or to laptops generally. Your own model may use a different interface, size or a non-replaceable design.

Do not infer replaceability from appearance
If the drive is not listed as replaceable, or the manual provides no owner procedure, do not assume that a physically similar SSD will work. Manufacturer documentation distinguishes supported customer service from work intended for trained technicians. Ask the manufacturer or a technician before opening a system whose storage path is undocumented.

Understand the service classification before opening the case
Lenovo’s user documentation defines the category plainly: “CRUs are computer parts that a user can upgrade or replace.” It also separates service levels:
- Self-service CRU: intended for ordinary customer replacement using the published procedure.
- Optional-service CRU: potentially replaceable by the owner, but it may require more skill or simple tools such as a screwdriver.
- FRU (field-replaceable unit): intended for trained technicians rather than routine owner replacement.
Legion guidance directs owners to the model’s Hardware Maintenance Manual for warnings, safety instructions and warranty information. The same principle applies to other product families: read the exact service guide first. A general RAM guide cannot override a model-specific warning or a component’s FRU designation.
Decide whether the proposed upgrade addresses your problem
Write down the symptom before ordering. A laptop that runs out of memory while multitasking has a different need from one that cannot hold a large photo library. Use the system’s own resource information to see whether memory or storage is the limiting resource, then compare that finding with the upgrade the manual permits.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Your constraint | Evidence to gather | Potential path | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory pressure during normal workloads | Current RAM, occupied slots and documented maximum | Add or replace RAM only if the model has supported sockets | Memory is soldered or already at the maximum |
| Insufficient space for files or applications | Current drive, available slot, interface, form factor and supported capacity | Replace or add a documented compatible drive | No supported owner-replaceable drive is listed |
| General slowness with no clear memory or storage constraint | Resource usage, thermals, operating-system condition and hardware status | Diagnose the actual bottleneck before buying parts | The proposed part does not address the observed limitation |
Do not assume an upgrade is cheaper than a new laptop. The price comparison depends on the exact component, local market and whether professional service is required. The available evidence does not support a universal savings claim or a guaranteed performance gain.
Prepare safely
Before opening the laptop, gather the exact service guide, a clean work surface, a container for screws and any tool the guide specifies. A precision screwdriver may be needed for an optional-service CRU; do not select a bit size from a generic video when your manual specifies something else.
For general RAM handling, Crucial’s installation guidance recommends:
Rank #4
- Capacity – 32GB RAM KIT (2 x 16GB Modules) Speed up to 2666MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 260-Pin 1.2V SODIMM.
- Specs – PCB Color (Green or Black) and Rank (1Rx8 or 2Rx8) may vary depending on production batch. Performance and quality remain consistent across all Timetec products.
- Compatibility – Designed for selected DDR4 Laptop, Notebook, Mini PCs, and All-In-One systems(AIO) that support 260-Pin SODIMM memory. NOT compatible with Desktop DIMM slots.
- Installation – Plug-and-Play Upgrade, Quick and Easy to Install, no expertise required (please refer to your system's manual for guidelines).
- Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
- Shut the computer down completely.
- Unplug the power adapter and all peripherals.
- Remove a removable battery only when the laptop’s own manual instructs you to do so.
- Protect against electrostatic discharge by touching unpainted metal or wearing an ESD wrist strap.
- Handle a memory module by its edges, never by the contacts or chips.
These precautions are not a substitute for the manufacturer’s opening procedure. Storage replacement may have additional battery-disconnection, cover-removal or firmware instructions, so follow the model-specific service guide rather than copying the RAM procedure.
Install replaceable RAM: a cautious general sequence
The following sequence describes the general logic of a supported RAM replacement. The exact screw locations, battery procedure and module layout come from your service manual.
- Back up important files. A RAM installation should not erase storage, but a backup protects you from mistakes or unrelated failure.
- Shut down and disconnect power. Do not work on a sleeping or hibernating laptop.
- Read the manual’s opening warnings. Confirm that the memory socket is a customer-replaceable or approved optional-service component.
- Open the enclosure as instructed. Keep screws organized and do not force a panel or cable.
- Ground yourself and locate the memory socket. Touch unpainted metal or use an ESD strap before handling the module.
- Remove an existing module only if the documented configuration requires it. Release the retaining clips and lift the module by its edges.
- Align the replacement module with the socket key. The notch and contacts must match the socket; never force the module.
- Seat the module using the angle and pressure shown in the manual. The retaining clips should secure it without bending the board.
- Reassemble the laptop. Replace covers, reconnect the battery if the guide requires it and reinstall screws in their original locations.
- Start the computer and verify recognition. Check firmware or the operating system’s memory information and confirm that the expected capacity is visible.
If the laptop fails to start, shut it down, disconnect power and recheck the module seating and documented configuration. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a machine with an unverified installation.
Replace storage only with the model’s procedure
Storage work varies more widely than basic RAM installation. Before removing the original drive, make a complete backup and determine how the operating system and recovery data will be transferred to the replacement. The service manual should tell you how to disconnect power, remove the cover, release the drive and reinstall the retaining hardware.
- Confirm the exact compatible drive. Match the manufacturer’s interface, physical size and supported capacity listing.
- Back up files and plan the operating-system transfer. A replacement drive may require cloning, reinstalling the operating system or using the manufacturer’s recovery process.
- Follow the power-isolation procedure. Use the battery-disconnect instructions in the model’s manual, not a generic video.
- Remove the existing drive without forcing connectors. Keep screws, brackets and thermal parts together.
- Install the replacement in the documented orientation and position. A drive that fits physically but is not listed for the interface or firmware may not function.
- Reassemble and verify detection. Check firmware storage information first, then confirm that the operating system sees the drive and that files or recovery tools work.
If the manual classifies the drive as an FRU or does not describe replacement, stop before opening the case and use the approved technician route.

| Symptom after installation | Likely checks | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| New RAM capacity is unchanged | Module seating, occupied-slot arrangement, soldered-memory limitation and maximum capacity | Power off, follow the manual to reseat or reconfigure; do not exceed the documented maximum |
| Laptop will not start | Power isolation, module alignment, covers and connectors | Disconnect power and undo the last step carefully; seek service if the manual does not cover the condition |
| Replacement drive is not detected | Interface, physical size, connector seating, firmware support and service classification | Recheck the exact parts listing; do not assume the drive is defective |
| Operating system starts but files are missing | Whether the original data was transferred and whether the correct recovery procedure was used | Restore from backup or use the documented recovery process |
| Cover or screw will not fit | Incorrect part orientation, trapped cable or misplaced screw | Stop and inspect against the service manual; never force the enclosure closed |
Recognition by firmware or the operating system confirms that the component is visible; it does not by itself prove that every application, recovery partition or workload is configured correctly. Check the manufacturer’s diagnostics and your backup before returning the laptop to normal use.

A model-specific buying checklist
Use this checklist immediately before ordering a component:
- Exact model name, machine type or product number recorded.
- Region and serial number checked where the parts tool supports them.
- RAM confirmed as socketed rather than soldered.
- Number of occupied and available RAM slots recorded.
- Memory generation, module format, per-slot capacity and total maximum matched.
- Storage replacement explicitly listed for the exact model.
- Storage interface, physical form factor, slot count and supported capacity matched.
- Service classification confirmed as self-service CRU, optional-service CRU or technician FRU.
- Current manual and Hardware Maintenance Manual reviewed.
- Backup completed and the required tools identified.
- Return policy checked in case the manufacturer’s parts lookup changes the compatible choice.
If any line is unanswered, postpone the purchase. A component verified against the exact laptop is safer than a cheaper part selected from a generic compatibility claim.
When buying a new laptop is the better route
Choose replacement rather than an upgrade when the needed component is soldered, the supported maximum is already installed, the storage path is not owner-replaceable, or the work is classified as a technician FRU and service cost is not justified. Replacement is also the clearer choice when diagnostics show that the actual limitation is unrelated to RAM or storage. That decision should be based on the documented upgrade path, your workload and current local prices—not on a universal promise that upgrading always saves money.
Frequently asked practical questions
How do I know whether my laptop RAM is soldered?
Search the exact manual and parts listing for “soldered,” “onboard,” “memory module” and “socket.” A stated memory total alone does not prove that a removable slot exists.
Which SSD fits my laptop?
Use the exact model’s manual and parts lookup to match the interface and physical form factor. The M.2 2280 drive documented for a Dell Latitude 5520 is a model-specific example, not a general rule.
How much RAM can my laptop support?
Use the manufacturer’s model-specific maximum, slot count and installed configuration. Do not infer the limit from the laptop’s family name or from a module listing.
