You can install a replacement wireless card only if your specific laptop has a replaceable card and supports the replacement electrically, physically, and in its firmware. Start with the laptop maker’s service guide and compatibility information—not with a card that merely fits the socket. There is no universal disassembly sequence: the battery procedure, fasteners, antenna layout, and even whether the card can be replaced vary by model.
Check whether the Wi-Fi card actually needs replacing
Before opening the laptop, identify its exact model and check whether Windows has disabled the adapter or is missing its driver. A connection problem alone does not establish that the wireless card has failed.
- In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Note the wireless adapter’s name and check whether it appears disabled or has a warning icon.
- Check the adapter’s status and enable it if it has been disabled. Review the laptop maker’s or adapter maker’s driver guidance if the adapter is missing or showing an error.
- Use Windows’ network troubleshooting guidance to check adapter settings and drivers before deciding on a hardware replacement: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.
If the adapter remains undetected or unreliable after software checks, consult the laptop manufacturer or a qualified repair provider before buying a card. A hardware fault is only one possible cause.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Find the exact laptop’s service guide
Locate the service or repair guide for the laptop’s full model number. Confirm that the wireless card is replaceable, identify the approved part or compatibility rules, and read the complete disassembly procedure before purchasing parts or opening the chassis. The guide is the authority for your machine’s required tools, fasteners, battery and power-isolation steps, and antenna placement.

- 【Wi-Fi 6E】With Intel Wi-Fi 6E technology network adapter provides strong performance and good compatibility, while reducing power consumption and improving service life.
- 【AX210 NGW Wireless LAN Card】Provides tri-band (6GHz, 5GHz and 2.4GHz) signal. Maximum speed up to 5374Mbps(2400Mbps @6GHz + 2400Mbps @5GHz + 574Mbps @2.4GHz).
- 【Bluetooth 5.3】Based on Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth 5.3 adds LE enhanced connection/Host set Controller key length function/LE channel hierarchy function. Make Bluetooth 5.3 lower latency, stronger anti-interference, improve battery life.
- 【Installation Requirements】For motherboards with Intel CPU and M.2 network slot, NGFF M2 2230 A/E key.Not supported CNVIo2 protocol M.2 slot and mini PCIe slot laptops.
- 【Compatible System】Support Windows 11/10 64-bit, WiFi and Bluetooth drivers need to be installed on the running PC (search "AX210NGW" from Intel website to download and install wifi and Bluetooth drivers).
Some laptops do not have a user-replaceable wireless card. Do not assume that a visible access panel, a removable-looking component, or another model in the same product family means yours can be serviced the same way. For example, Microsoft’s self-repair guidance applies to selected Surface models and directs owners to consult model-specific service guides before purchasing parts or beginning repairs: Surface repair.
Check compatibility before buying a replacement
Use the laptop documentation and manufacturer compatibility information to verify every point below. A card’s dimensions or the fact that it fits into a socket do not prove it will work.

- Approved part and replaceability: Confirm the replacement part number or supported card family for the exact laptop model.
- Form factor and socket: Match the card’s dimensions and M.2 socket/key to the laptop. M.2 2230 describes a size, not complete electrical compatibility.
- Electrical interface and platform support: Check whether the system supports the card’s interface and whether its motherboard, BIOS, and M.2 port are compatible. Intel notes that AX210 compatibility depends on the computer design, motherboard, BIOS, M.2 port, and regulatory requirements: Intel wireless adapter compatibility.
- PCIe versus CNVi: Do not substitute a CNVi companion RF module for a conventional PCIe wireless card just because it fits. Intel says CNVi CRF modules work only in systems designed for CNVi, even when they can be inserted in a standard M.2 Key E socket: What Are the Intel Integrated Connectivity (CNVi) and Companion RF (CRF) Module?.
- Antenna connections: Verify the connector type and number of antenna leads against the original card and laptop guide. Intel’s adapter documentation describes the small RF connector standard used on its M.2 adapters and directs users to the equipment manufacturer for antenna integration, replacement, and regulatory guidance: Antenna connectors for Intel wireless adapters.
- Drivers and features: Confirm that a suitable driver is available for your operating system. Compare Wi-Fi bands and generation or Bluetooth support only after compatibility is established; features such as 6 GHz Wi-Fi also depend on the computer, drivers, regulatory region, and router or network.
AX210 illustrates why socket fit is not enough
Intel’s AX210 documentation calls for a compatible wireless M.2 2230 Key E connection and says the card cannot be installed in M.2 Key M or Key B sockets: Intel wireless adapter compatibility. Intel’s product brief describes M.2 2230 modules using a standard Key A or Key E socket and lists AX210 as Wi-Fi 6E, with Bluetooth 5.2 specified for AX210D2W: Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 product brief. Those specifications do not establish that AX210 will work in a particular laptop. Intel separately warns that CNVi CRF modules require a system designed for CNVi; a standard Key E socket alone is not sufficient.

Install the card using the laptop’s procedure
Once the exact replacement is verified and the guide confirms the card is replaceable, follow that guide from start to finish. Do not apply a generic sequence for battery disconnection, screw removal, card handling, or antenna leads: those details are model-specific.

- Prepare the work area and tools. Use the tools and precautions specified in the service guide. Do not guess the screwdriver size or pry open a chassis with an unapproved tool.
- Shut down and isolate power as directed. Follow the guide’s instructions for the charger, battery, and any other power source. Do not assume every laptop uses the same battery-disconnect step.
- Open the chassis and locate the card. Follow the model-specific order for removing covers and fasteners. Keep track of screws and parts as the guide directs.
- Remove the existing card and antenna leads as instructed. Note the original antenna routing and which lead attaches to each labeled connector. Avoid pulling on the cables; use the removal method specified by the guide.
- Fit the replacement and reconnect the antennas. Seat the card in the specified orientation and secure it as directed. Match each antenna lead to the correct connector and route the cables as shown in the service guide.
- Reassemble the laptop. Replace covers and fasteners in the prescribed order, then restore power according to the guide.
Install the driver and verify the connection
After reassembly, install the appropriate driver from the laptop maker or card maker for the laptop’s operating system. Then check Device Manager > Network adapters to confirm that Windows detects the adapter, and connect to a known Wi-Fi network.
If the adapter does not appear or cannot connect, check the driver and compatibility first, then power down and use the service guide to inspect card seating and antenna connections. If the card still is not detected, contact the laptop manufacturer or a repair provider rather than repeatedly reopening the laptop without a clear diagnosis.
