The normal PS5 update takes place from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. If a download fails, retry it from Downloads/Uploads first. If the console still will not update, move through Sony’s escalation path: check the displayed error and your connection, update in Safe Mode, then use an official update file on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Reinstalling system software is a last resort because it deletes user data.
This guide gives the exact menu paths, Safe Mode procedure, USB folder and filename requirements, error-specific checks, data-loss warnings, and the point at which official repair support is appropriate.
Update your PS5 from Settings
Use the standard network update whenever the home screen and Settings are available. It is the simplest route and avoids preparing a USB drive.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the available update.
Keep the console powered on while installation runs. Sony’s official guidance warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause the console to be damaged.” Do not disconnect power or deliberately restart the PS5 until the installation has completed and the console has returned to its normal interface.

Check whether the latest version is installed
To see the installed system software version, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony says the status Up to date under the version indicates that the latest version is installed. Firmware versions and the size of later update files can change, so use the current PlayStation Support page when you need the latest release details.
Before troubleshooting a failed update
Confirm the basic conditions before switching to recovery methods:
- Leave enough free console storage for the download and installation. Sony’s current update guidance specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file; treat this as an operational requirement, not a permanent size for every future release.
- Use only system software obtained from Sony’s official PlayStation source. Do not rename, modify, or combine firmware files from another source.
- Keep the PS5 connected to reliable power and do not interrupt installation.
- If you plan to use a computer for a USB update, have a PC or Mac with an internet connection available.
- For Safe Mode navigation, have a compatible controller and a USB cable so the controller can be connected directly to the console.
If the console can still reach its home screen, try the normal Settings route again before entering Safe Mode. Recovery steps are useful, but they should not replace a straightforward retry when the system is otherwise operating normally.

Retry a failed download from Downloads/Uploads
A failed download does not automatically mean that the PS5 needs a reset. Sony directs you to inspect the failed item and retry it first.
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control center or the location shown by the console for active downloads.
- Highlight the system software update that failed.
- Open the item’s options and view the displayed error information.
- Choose the command to try the download again.
Record the exact error code before dismissing it. The code determines which connection or file checks are relevant. If the same update fails repeatedly, Sony directs users to its manual update procedure rather than endlessly repeating the same download attempt.
Check the network and the displayed error
When the home screen is available after an unsuccessful update, Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the router with a LAN cable and trying the update from Settings again. A wired connection removes the wireless link as a variable; it does not prove that every update failure is caused by Wi-Fi.
What to do for error WS-116522-7
Sony provides specific suggestions for WS-116522-7. Apply them to that code rather than treating them as a universal diagnosis for every PS5 update problem:
- Restart the PS5 and try the update again.
- Prefer a wired LAN connection if one is available.
- If you must use Wi-Fi, check the console’s placement and reduce distance or obstructions between the PS5 and the wireless router.
- Restart the modem and router. After turning them off, wait at least five minutes before powering them back on, then retry the update.
- If you are updating from USB, verify the required filename, capitalization, and folder location described in the USB section below.
These steps address the connection and file conditions Sony associates with this error. They are not a guarantee that a different code has the same cause. For another code, follow the instructions shown by Sony for that exact code instead of substituting the WS-116522-7 procedure.

Update system software in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a limited set of maintenance commands. Use it when the regular Settings update is unavailable or repeatedly fails and you need the console’s recovery interface.
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep; the second beep occurs several seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. A wireless connection is not sufficient for Safe Mode navigation.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
- Select Update System Software from the Safe Mode menu.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for the available update method.
Safe Mode includes both maintenance commands and commands that can erase content. Select only the update command unless you have deliberately reached the later recovery stage and understand its data consequences.
Perform a manual PS5 update from a USB drive
A USB update is useful when the PS5 cannot complete a network download or when Sony’s instructions for your error direct you to a manual update. You need a PC or Mac connected to the internet, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller with a USB cable for Safe Mode.
Prepare the drive and update file
- Connect the USB drive to the PC or Mac and make sure it is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting can remove existing files, so copy anything important from the drive before reformatting.
- Create a folder in the root of the drive named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system software update file from Sony’s PlayStation system software page.
- Save the downloaded file inside the
UPDATEfolder with this exact name, including uppercase letters:PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Ensure the resulting path is
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not place the file in an additional folder and do not change the extension. - Keep approximately 1.1 GB of free space available for the update file, as specified by Sony’s current guidance. Check the live official page because file-size requirements can change.
- Eject the drive safely from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
Install the file in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.
- Allow the console to verify and install the file without turning it off.
The USB drive is an optional route; the PS5 can use the network update path when that path works. You do not need a particular brand, transfer speed, or advertised capacity beyond a drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and hold the official file with the required free space.
USB checklist before you return to Safe Mode
Before reconnecting the drive, verify the complete chain rather than checking only the file name. The drive should open to the PS5 folder, that folder should contain UPDATE, and UPDATE should contain the single official file named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Confirm the letters are uppercase and that your computer is not hiding an extra extension. If you reformatted the drive, recreate the folders afterward; formatting removes the previous folder structure. Safely eject the drive, then connect it directly to the PS5 before entering Safe Mode. These checks prevent a correct download from being rejected because it is stored in the wrong place.
When the PS5 does not recognize the USB update
If Safe Mode reports that no update file was found, check each condition in order. A single character, misplaced folder, or unsupported filesystem is enough to make the file invisible to the console.
- Filesystem: Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a different format.
- Root folders: The folders must be exactly
PS5and thenUPDATE, created at the drive’s root level. - Filename: The file must be exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP, with the capitalization shown. Check that the computer has not added a second extension such as.PUP.PUP. - Location: The file must be inside
PS5/UPDATE, not beside the folders, inside another nested folder, or in the computer’s Downloads directory only. - Official file: Download the file again from Sony’s official PlayStation system software page if its origin or integrity is uncertain.
- Safe Mode connection: Re-enter Safe Mode and connect the controller by USB before selecting the USB update command.
After correcting a folder or filename, safely eject the drive, reconnect it to the PS5, and repeat the Safe Mode USB steps. Do not use a renamed file simply because its name looks similar; the console’s check depends on the prescribed spelling and location.
Understand the data risk of Safe Mode recovery commands
Safe Mode is not synonymous with wiping the console. Sony identifies some commands as non-destructive and others as destructive, so read the label before confirming an action.

| Safe Mode command | Data consequence stated by Sony | When it belongs in the process |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Does not erase data. | Use for the storage-repair situation described by the console or Sony’s support instructions; it is not a replacement for the update command. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data. | Only after less-invasive update and troubleshooting steps have failed and you have accepted the loss. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and reinstalls the system software. | Last-resort troubleshooting when Sony’s instructions call for a complete reinstall. |
Back up important data using the console’s available backup options before choosing either reset command, if the PS5 can still access those options. A reset can remove saved data, captures, settings, and other user content, so do not select it merely to force a routine update.
Reinstall system software only as a last resort
Sony treats Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a final troubleshooting step, not a normal update method. It is appropriate only when the official update and recovery procedures have failed, you understand that user data will be deleted, and you have backed up what you can.
- Confirm that the normal Settings update, retry procedure, Safe Mode update, and applicable USB checks have not resolved the problem.
- Back up important user data if the console still permits it.
- Prepare the official reinstall file using the same FAT32 or exFAT USB requirements and exact
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPpath specified for the manual update. - Enter Safe Mode by powering off, holding the power button until the second beep, and connecting the controller by USB.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only after reading the warning and confirming that deleting user data is acceptable.
- Leave the console powered on while the reinstall runs.
If reinstalling fails, Sony says the console may need repair. Do not improvise firmware modifications or unverified hardware repairs; move to official PlayStation repair support.
Choose the next step based on what you can still access
| What you see | Next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen and Settings work; update has not been tried | Use the normal Settings update path. | It is the least complicated route. |
| Download failed once | Inspect Downloads/Uploads, view the error, and retry. | A transient download failure may clear without recovery mode. |
| Several downloads fail | Check the exact code, try wired networking where possible, and follow Sony’s manual-update guidance. | Repeated failure warrants a different route and error-specific checks. |
| Settings update is unavailable or continues to fail | Use Safe Mode’s Update System Software command. | Safe Mode provides a separate update interface. |
| Network updating cannot complete | Prepare the official file on a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive and choose Update from USB Storage Device. | The console reads the update locally instead of downloading it. |
| Official reinstall fails | Contact official PlayStation repair support. | Sony identifies repair as the escalation when reinstalling does not work. |
Common mistakes that prolong an update problem
- Turning off the PS5 during installation because the progress screen appears slow. Interrupting installation can damage the console.
- Using a USB file from an unofficial source or changing the required filename.
- Putting
PS5UPDATE.PUPin the drive root instead of inPS5/UPDATE. - Using a USB filesystem other than FAT32 or exFAT.
- Choosing a reset command before trying the non-destructive update routes.
- Applying advice for WS-116522-7 to a different error without checking that error’s official instructions.
- Repeating wireless retries without testing a LAN connection when the console and router support one.
What to document if you need support
If the official steps do not resolve the problem, keep the exact error code, the route that failed, and whether the console still reaches the home screen. Note whether you retried Downloads/Uploads, tested a LAN connection, entered Safe Mode, and prepared the USB path exactly as specified. This information helps you follow the matching Sony instructions instead of repeating unrelated fixes. Do not erase the console while you are still trying to identify the failure unless Sony’s instructions specifically call for that step and you have accepted the data loss.
Following the routes in order preserves the most data and changes only one major variable at a time: first the normal update, then a retry and connection check, then Safe Mode, then a correctly prepared USB file, and finally reinstall or repair when Sony’s guidance requires escalation.
