To update a motherboard BIOS from USB, download the firmware for your exact board model, prepare the drive as its manufacturer specifies, then use either the board’s in-BIOS update utility or its dedicated USB Flashback feature. These methods are not interchangeable: Flashback is available only on supported boards and can require a specific USB port, filename, power setup, and button sequence. Follow the instructions on your exact motherboard’s official support page and manual.
Before you start: identify the board and update method
Confirm the motherboard’s full model name and, if the manufacturer distinguishes them, its hardware revision. Find the matching product support page and manual. Check the BIOS release notes for prerequisites and confirm which update methods your board supports. ASUS, MSI, and ASRock all provide board-specific files or procedures; firmware for a similar-looking model is not a safe substitute.
Choose the method the manual supports. An in-BIOS utility runs from the firmware setup environment and requires you to enter that utility. USB Flashback is a separate hardware feature found only on some boards. It may allow an update without a normal system boot, but its exact requirements differ by model.

Prepare the USB drive and BIOS file
- Back up the drive. Formatting erases its contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
- Use the format specified by the board instructions. The cited ASUS and MSI procedures use FAT32; ASUS’s FlashBack FAQ also refers to FAT16/32. Do not assume a different format will work.
- Download the BIOS for the exact motherboard. Use the manufacturer’s official support page for that model and revision. Read any release notes or preparation requirements.
- Extract and place the file as instructed. Some procedures require a particular filename or the file to be in the USB drive’s root directory. Rename it only when the model’s instructions say to do so; names used in one manufacturer’s example are not universal.
Choose the correct USB update route
| What to check | In-BIOS utility | Dedicated USB Flashback |
|---|---|---|
| Board support | Confirm the board’s firmware setup includes the utility and follow its manual. | Requires a supported board with the feature, designated port, and button. |
| System state | Enter the firmware environment and run the update utility. MSI’s M-FLASH is one example. | Some supported boards can update without a normal system boot. ASRock describes its Flashback procedure as working without a CPU, RAM, or graphics card. |
| USB setup | Use the format and model-matched BIOS file specified by the board instructions. | Follow the model-specific format, filename, port, power, button, and indicator directions. |
| Completion signal | Follow the utility’s on-screen instructions and wait for it to finish. | Use only the status indicator and completion directions documented for that board. ASRock says its Flashback LED stops blinking when the update is complete. |
Update from an in-BIOS utility
- Prepare the USB drive and BIOS file using the instructions for your exact board.
- Restart and enter the motherboard’s firmware setup. Open the manufacturer’s documented update utility; for MSI boards using M-FLASH, follow MSI’s M-FLASH instructions.
- Select the BIOS file specified for your board and confirm the update only after checking that the model and file match.
- Leave the USB drive connected and keep the computer powered. MSI explicitly warns: “Do not turn off the computer, disconnect the power, or remove the USB drive during the update process.”
- Wait for the utility to report completion and follow the board’s directions for restarting or entering setup afterward.
Update with a dedicated Flashback button
Use this route only if the motherboard manual confirms it supports a dedicated BIOS Flashback feature. Button-based procedures are model-specific, even when two boards are from the same manufacturer. Check the required USB port, file format and name, power connections, button timing, and meaning of the status light before starting.

For ASRock boards, consult the ASRock BIOS Flashback instructions; the documented completion signal is that the LED stops blinking. For MSI boards that support a Flash BIOS Button, use the exact model’s directions, such as MSI’s Flash BIOS Button instructions. ASUS provides its own BIOS FlashBack FAQ. Do not transfer one board’s filename, port, LED interpretation, or button sequence to another.

Do not guess at a recovery sequence or interrupt a firmware write just because it is taking longer than expected. The cited manufacturer procedures do not establish a universal update duration or a cross-brand recovery method. Use the board’s own indicator and completion criteria.

- Recheck that the BIOS file matches the full motherboard model and revision.
- Verify the drive format, extracted file, required filename, and root-directory placement against the exact manual.
- For Flashback, confirm you used the designated USB port and followed the required power and button procedure.
- Use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions. ASUS advises checking the FlashBack steps and contacting local support if the issue persists.
ASUS’s FlashBack FAQ, MSI’s M-FLASH instructions, and ASRock’s Flashback instructions illustrate procedures for their supported boards, not every motherboard or OEM computer.
