Do not assume every AM5 motherboard needs a BIOS update for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. First identify the exact motherboard model and hardware revision, then check that board’s official CPU-support list and BIOS notes for the minimum version that adds 9800X3D support. If the installed firmware is too old, update it with a currently supported processor, or use the board’s documented CPU-less flashback feature if it has one.

AMD says, “A BIOS update may be needed when a motherboard does not already support a newer AMD Ryzen™ desktop processor.” A processor unsupported by the installed BIOS can prevent the system from starting. Use AMD’s guidance as background, but treat the motherboard maker’s support page and manual as the authority for the exact file and procedure: AMD BIOS guidance.

First determine whether an update is necessary

BIOS support is board-specific. Two motherboards using the same AM5 socket can require different BIOS releases, and a board may already have compatible firmware from the factory. There is no universal “Ryzen 9000” or “9800X3D” BIOS version that can safely be applied to every model.

Identify the exact board and revision

  1. Read the full model name printed on the motherboard, its retail box, or the invoice. Marketing families such as “B650” or “X870” are not specific enough.
  2. Look for a hardware-revision marking on the PCB or box, such as “rev. 1.0” or “1.1.” A BIOS for another revision may be rejected or may cause a failure.
  3. Write down the manufacturer and model exactly, including suffixes such as WiFi, AX, M.2, or “E.”

If the computer currently boots, open its firmware setup and note the installed BIOS version. The entry is commonly shown on the first UEFI page, but the label and location vary. If the machine cannot boot, use the board printing or box; do not guess from the chipset name.

Use the official support page

On the manufacturer’s support site, open the page for the exact model and revision. Check both:

  • the CPU-support list, which should explicitly include Ryzen 7 9800X3D or the relevant Ryzen 9000 family entry; and
  • the BIOS download notes, which identify the first release that adds support or lists a required AGESA/firmware change.

For example, ASRock publishes model-specific versions, dates, methods, and Ryzen 9000/9800X3D notes on its A620M-HDVM.2 BIOS page. That page illustrates why its version numbers must not be copied to another ASRock model, let alone another manufacturer’s board.

BIOS pages change over time. Verify the current support list and release notes on the day you download the file. AMD’s official article, updated August 12, 2026, says to obtain the update and instructions from the motherboard or system maker: AMD’s processor and BIOS FAQ.

Choose the update route

What you have Recommended route What is required Main constraint
The system boots with a processor already supported by the current BIOS Use the board’s UEFI update utility Correct BIOS file, compatible USB drive if required, stable power, and access to UEFI Do not power off, remove the drive, or interrupt the update
The board has a documented CPU-less flashback feature Use the dedicated rear USB port and flashback button procedure Exact board file, the specified USB format and filename, 24-pin and CPU power, and the board’s indicator/button Only models that actually include the feature can use it
No supported CPU and no flashback feature Ask the retailer about BIOS service, borrow or obtain a supported CPU, or contact the board maker Service availability and any fee depend on the provider and location Do not assume AMD supplies a loan CPU for this AM5 installation

A flashback button is not a generic property of AM5 motherboards. Names and procedures differ: MSI calls its implementation Flash BIOS Button, ASUS calls its feature USB BIOS FlashBack, and GIGABYTE uses Q-Flash Plus. Confirm the feature on the exact rear-I/O panel, product page, and manual before removing the existing CPU.

Prepare before downloading or flashing

  • Record the exact model, revision, current BIOS version (if available), and the support-page URL.
  • Download only the BIOS listed for that exact model and revision. Do not use a similarly named board’s file.
  • Read the model-specific instructions before extracting or renaming anything. Some vendors provide a renaming utility; others require a particular filename.
  • Use a reliable USB flash drive when the board’s instructions require one. A FAT32 drive is required by MSI’s documented Flash BIOS Button procedure; another model may specify different requirements.
  • Connect the computer to dependable mains power. Avoid a switch, strip, or cable that could be accidentally disconnected.
  • Back up important data if you are updating a working system. A BIOS update normally targets firmware rather than user files, but the machine must not be interrupted while the firmware is being written.
  • Remove unnecessary USB devices so the board can identify the intended update drive and port.

Keep the downloaded archive until the process has completed. Extract it exactly as the manufacturer describes; do not flash the compressed archive unless the manual explicitly says to do so.

Method 1: update from UEFI with a supported processor

This is the normal path when an older AM5 processor lets the board start. Install the older, supported CPU and its cooler, connect the required power and display hardware, and boot into UEFI. The labels differ by manufacturer, but the sequence is generally:

  1. Download the BIOS file for the exact board from its official support page and copy it to the location specified by the manual, usually the root of a USB drive.
  2. Restart the computer and enter UEFI using the key shown on the startup screen, commonly Delete or F2.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s built-in update utility. As one concrete example, MSI documents M-FLASH in its UEFI update instructions: MSI M-FLASH guide.
  4. Select the downloaded file only after confirming its model and revision. If the utility displays a board identifier, compare it with the label you recorded.
  5. Start the update and wait for the utility to finish and reboot. Do not press reset, switch off the power supply, unplug the USB drive, or disconnect power while the progress indicator is active.
  6. After the reboot, re-enter UEFI and verify the new BIOS version. Load the manufacturer’s recommended defaults if the manual calls for it, then save and shut down.

MSI’s instructions specifically warn against powering down, disconnecting power, or removing the USB drive during M-FLASH. Other manufacturers express the same safety requirement in different words; the exact board manual controls.

Method 2: update without the 9800X3D installed

Some boards can refresh firmware with no CPU in the socket. AMD describes this as a feature available on select motherboards and notes that each manufacturer uses its own procedure: AMD boot guidance. A board that lacks the feature cannot be converted into a flashback board with software.

Generic flashback checklist

  1. Confirm in the exact manual that the model has CPU-less flashback and identify the labeled rear USB port and button.
  2. Download the matching BIOS and apply the vendor’s required extraction and filename rules.
  3. Format or prepare the USB drive exactly as instructed. Do not assume FAT32, a particular capacity, or a particular filename unless the manual specifies it.
  4. With the system powered down, connect the 24-pin motherboard power and the CPU power connector required by the manual. Follow the manual regarding the CPU, memory, graphics card, and other components; some designs need only the board and power.
  5. Insert the drive into the dedicated flashback port, not an ordinary USB port.
  6. Press the flashback button once and watch the status LED or other indicator. Let the cycle complete, including any automatic restarts.
  7. When the indicator shows completion or the manual’s stated end condition, turn off the power and remove the drive. Never remove it while the indicator is still active.

MSI example: Flash BIOS Button

MSI documents a CPU-less process only for models that have a Flash BIOS Button. Its listed requirements are specific:

Read MSI’s current procedure before acting because port markings and model eligibility matter: MSI Flash BIOS Button guide. The filename MSI.ROM and FAT32 requirement are MSI’s documented example, not universal instructions for every board.

ASUS and GIGABYTE differences

ASUS publishes model-specific instructions for USB BIOS FlashBack and directs users to the support page for their particular board: ASUS FlashBack guidance. GIGABYTE’s AMD 800-series manual describes Q-Flash Plus as a powered-down route using the latest BIOS file, a dedicated port, and a button, while warning that an inadequate flash can cause malfunction: GIGABYTE AMD 800-series manual. These documents demonstrate the differences; they do not establish a single procedure for all ASUS or GIGABYTE models.

Install the Ryzen 7 9800X3D after the update

Once the board reports the required BIOS version, shut the system down completely and switch off the power supply before replacing the processor. Follow the motherboard and processor installation manuals for socket retention, cooler mounting, and thermal-interface material. Do not attempt to force the CPU into the socket. After reassembly, connect the cooler fan to the designated CPU-fan header and confirm that the cooler is firmly mounted before powering on.

The first start after a CPU change can take longer than a normal boot while the firmware trains memory. Allow the board the time specified in its manual before assuming it has failed. If it eventually reaches UEFI, verify that the processor is identified as a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, check CPU temperature and cooler-fan detection, and then save the intended settings.

What to do if the computer will not start

No display or repeated restart after installing the 9800X3D

  • Power off and reseat the 24-pin and CPU power connectors, memory modules, and cooler fan.
  • Clear CMOS only according to the motherboard manual, then try the default settings.
  • Check the board’s diagnostic LEDs or code display and compare the symptom with the manual.
  • Recheck the CPU-support list and the installed BIOS version. A board that still has an older firmware may simply lack 9800X3D support.

Flashback does not begin

  • Verify that the model has the feature and that the drive is in the dedicated BIOS port.
  • Re-download the file for the exact model and revision, re-extract it, and apply the required filename rule.
  • Check the required drive format and the connected power leads.
  • Try another basic USB drive if the manual permits it, then repeat the documented process without interruption.

The update was interrupted or reports an error

Do not repeatedly cycle power at random. Consult the board maker’s recovery instructions and support service. Vendor manuals warn that an inadequate or interrupted flash can cause malfunction, so the correct recovery path depends on the model’s recovery hardware and warranty process.

If you have neither a supported CPU nor flashback

AMD lists three practical alternatives when the new processor cannot boot with the installed firmware: use a processor supported by the current BIOS to perform the update, ask the retailer whether it offers a BIOS-update service, or contact the motherboard manufacturer: AMD’s official alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A retailer or local PC shop may charge for the service or limit it to boards purchased there; availability and turnaround depend on your location and provider. Arrange the service before disassembling a working system if you need the machine urgently.

Do not treat AMD’s temporary boot-kit article as a general AM5 loaner program. Its described loan process is limited to compatible AM4 systems and does not promise a temporary CPU for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D installation: AMD boot-kit conditions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Downloading a BIOS for the chipset family instead of the exact motherboard model.
  • Ignoring a hardware-revision suffix.
  • Assuming a board has FlashBack, Q-Flash Plus, or a similar feature because another model in the same product family has it.
  • Renaming a file with another vendor’s convention, such as using MSI.ROM on a non-MSI board.
  • Putting the drive in an ordinary USB port when the manual specifies a dedicated one.
  • Removing the drive or cutting power because the indicator appears to pause.
  • Copying a BIOS version number from an example board to your own model.
  • Expecting the new CPU to boot before confirming that the required firmware is installed.

Final pre-install checklist

  1. Exact motherboard model and hardware revision recorded.
  2. 9800X3D listed on the current official CPU-support page.
  3. Required minimum BIOS identified from the board’s release notes.
  4. Installed version checked, or the board’s inability to boot acknowledged.
  5. Update route selected: UEFI utility, documented CPU-less flashback, or service.
  6. Correct file, extraction method, filename, USB format, port, and power connections verified against the manual.
  7. Stable power available and no action planned that could interrupt the flash.
  8. New CPU installed only after the board has completed the update.
