To update an iPhone, back it up, connect it to power and Wi‑Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple’s current major release is iOS 27, but the exact update shown depends on your iPhone model and the iOS version already installed. If no wireless update appears or installation fails, update through Finder on a newer Mac or iTunes on a Windows PC or older Mac.
Before you update: check the model and make a backup
An iOS update changes core system software. Apple recommends backing up before installation so you have a copy of important information if something goes wrong. Use iCloud or a computer backup that you already trust; the essential point is to create the backup before tapping the install button.
Confirm that your iPhone supports the release
Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility list starts with the iPhone 11 family and includes iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 families, including the variants Apple lists for those generations. It also includes the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Older iPhones may not be eligible for iOS 27, although they can still receive the newest version that Apple offers for their model.
Do not assume that seeing “iOS 27” in an article means every iPhone can install it. The Software Update screen checks your model and current software and presents the compatible release. If your phone is older, install the newest version it offers rather than trying to force an unsupported major release.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use this preparation checklist
- Back up the iPhone and verify that the backup completed.
- Connect the iPhone to a charger before starting.
- Join a reliable Wi‑Fi network rather than relying on a mobile-data connection.
- Check available storage at Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- If you plan to update with a computer, locate a cable that fits both the iPhone and the computer.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, be prepared to disconnect it if the phone cannot contact Apple’s update servers.
There is no need to buy a cable for a wireless installation. A cable is relevant only if you choose the computer route, and the correct cable depends on the connector on the iPhone and the port on the computer. Match both ends before you begin; Apple does not identify one connector that fits every combination.
Update wirelessly from the iPhone
Wireless updating is Apple’s simplest installation method. The phone checks for the release that matches its model, downloads the package over Wi‑Fi and installs it on the device.
Step 1: open Software Update
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
Wait for the screen to finish checking. It will show the iOS version currently installed and, when available, the compatible update. Read the version and any storage or restart message before proceeding. Because availability can vary by model and starting version, this screen is the authoritative answer for your particular iPhone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 2: download and install
- Tap Download and Install when the update is offered.
- Enter your passcode if the iPhone asks for it.
- Keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi‑Fi while it downloads and prepares the update.
- Follow the onscreen prompts. The iPhone will restart as part of installation.
Do not interrupt the phone while it is installing. A download can take longer when the update is large or the internet connection is slow. Avoid starting other substantial downloads at the same time, and leave the phone connected to its charger until the process finishes.
The download, preparation and installation are separate stages. A progress bar that pauses during preparation does not necessarily indicate a failure. Keep the phone powered and give it time before closing Settings, changing networks or trying another update method.
Step 3: verify the installed version
After the restart, return to Settings > General > Software Update. The screen should report that the iPhone is up to date or show another compatible update. You can also open Settings > General > About to view the iOS version listed for the device.
Turn on automatic iOS updates
If you would rather not check manually, Apple provides automatic-update controls in Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

Automatic Download
Automatic Download lets the iPhone download an available update in the background. You can then install it when convenient instead of waiting for the download at installation time. This option is useful when your Wi‑Fi connection is available at home but you want to choose when the phone restarts.
Automatic Install
Apple describes automatic installation overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi. The phone notifies you before installation. Leave the setting enabled only if an overnight restart is acceptable for your work, travel or emergency-contact needs.
Automatic installation is not a promise that the phone will restart immediately after a release appears. The device needs power and Wi‑Fi, and it follows the conditions shown in the Automatic Updates settings. If you need to control the exact timing, use Automatic Download and install manually.
When automatic updates are not ideal
Manual installation gives you a chance to check storage, create a fresh backup and choose a time when a restart will not interrupt you. It is also the better choice when you need to troubleshoot a failed download or when the phone is used for time-sensitive work.

What to do when no update appears
A missing update does not necessarily mean the iPhone is broken. The phone may be unsupported for that release, the update may not be available wirelessly, or the device may be unable to reach Apple’s update service.
Check the model and current version
Return to Settings > General > Software Update and read the message shown there. An older model may simply have reached the end of the releases it supports. For iOS 27, Apple’s listed boundary is the iPhone 11 family and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), with the intervening iPhone families also supported.
Do not treat a major-release announcement as a guarantee that every phone receives the same point release. The version already installed can affect what the device offers, so use the on-device listing rather than a generic “latest iOS” number.

Check storage before retrying
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If space is low, the iPhone may offer to temporarily remove apps during the update and reinstall them afterward. You can also delete large, unneeded content or enable Offload Unused Apps. Review what will be removed before confirming, and make sure important files are backed up elsewhere.

Temporary app removal is an update-space measure, not a license to skip a backup. Confirm that essential app data is synced or included in your backup, then return to Software Update after creating enough room.
Check the network path
Stay on Wi‑Fi and keep the iPhone connected to power. Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections can prevent contact with its update servers, so disconnect one temporarily if the update cannot be found or verified. If the download is merely slow, avoid other downloads and allow more time; download duration depends on the package size and internet speed.
Update with a Mac or Windows PC
A computer is the fallback when wireless updating is unavailable, does not list the expected release or repeatedly fails. Apple’s computer method requires a cable connecting the iPhone to the computer. Match the connector at the phone end with the available port on the computer; Apple does not specify one cable type that fits every iPhone and computer combination.
This route can be useful when the iPhone cannot contact the update server over its current Wi‑Fi connection or when Apple directs you to update from a computer. It is not required simply because a new iOS version exists.
Choose the correct computer software
| Computer | App Apple documents | When this applies |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Finder | macOS Catalina or later |
| Windows PC | iTunes | Windows computer using Apple’s iTunes method |
| Mac | iTunes | macOS Mojave or earlier |
Update with Finder on macOS Catalina or later
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible cable.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the Finder sidebar.
- If prompted on either device, unlock the iPhone and choose to trust the computer.
- Open the device’s software-management view and select the option to check for an update.
- Choose the available update and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Keep the cable connected until the update and restart are complete.
The exact buttons can vary with the macOS version, but the device must remain selected in Finder while the update is prepared and installed.
Update with iTunes on Windows or an older Mac
- Install or open the current iTunes installation available for that computer.
- Connect the iPhone with a compatible cable.
- Unlock the iPhone and approve the trust prompt if it appears.
- Select the iPhone in iTunes, open its summary or device page, and choose Check for Update.
- Select the offered update and follow iTunes’ instructions.
- Do not disconnect the iPhone until iTunes reports completion and the phone has restarted.
If the computer does not recognize the phone, first check the cable connection and the trust prompt on the unlocked iPhone. The update itself should not be interrupted by removing the cable while the software is being prepared or installed.

Wireless versus computer updating
| Question | Wireless update | Computer update |
|---|---|---|
| Does the update appear on the iPhone? | Required; the phone lists the compatible release. | Useful when the wireless listing is missing or fails. |
| What connection is needed? | Wi‑Fi and power. | A computer, a data-capable cable and the appropriate app. |
| Which is simpler? | Usually the simplest route because no computer is required. | More setup, but a practical fallback for wireless problems. |
| What should you do if installation fails? | Retry after checking storage, Wi‑Fi, power and VPN/proxy settings. | Use Finder or iTunes after the wireless retry or when Apple directs you to a computer. |
Fix common iOS update problems
Apple identifies five broad causes of wireless-update problems: the iPhone does not support the software, storage is insufficient, the download is taking a long time, the device cannot reach the update server, or the installation does not complete. Use the branch that matches the message or symptom on your screen.
“Not enough storage”
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the largest apps and content categories.
- Delete items you no longer need, or enable Offload Unused Apps.
- If iOS offers to temporarily remove apps, review and accept that option if you are comfortable with it.
- Return to Software Update and try again.
Apple says temporarily removed apps can be reinstalled after the update. Personal data still deserves a backup before you proceed.
The download is taking a long time
Keep the iPhone on Wi‑Fi and power. Do not start other large downloads while the update is running. The time varies with the update’s size and the speed of the internet connection, so a slow progress indicator is not by itself proof of failure.
The iPhone cannot reach the update server
Confirm that Wi‑Fi is working, keep the charger connected and temporarily disconnect any VPN or proxy. Then return to Software Update and retry. A different reliable Wi‑Fi network can help distinguish a local network problem from an issue on the phone.
The update downloaded but will not install
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and look for the downloaded iOS update. Delete that update, restart the download from Software Update and try the installation again. Apple recommends this approach when an update does not complete.
The update is not listed in iPhone Storage or still fails
Use the computer route. Connect the iPhone by cable and update with Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or with iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier. If the update is not available wirelessly, Apple specifically directs users to try a computer.
The iPhone appears stuck during installation
Keep it connected to power and do not remove the cable during a computer installation. Give the process time to finish before trying another method. If the installation repeatedly fails after the storage, network and retry steps above, use Finder or iTunes rather than repeatedly starting the same wireless download.

Questions to answer before choosing a method
- Is my phone eligible for iOS 27? Apple lists iPhone 11 and later families and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). The device itself remains the final authority for the compatible update.
- Do I need a cable? No for a wireless update. You need one only for the computer method, and it must fit both the iPhone and computer.
- Can I update over mobile data? Apple’s documented wireless sequence calls for Wi‑Fi, so connect to Wi‑Fi before downloading.
- Will the iPhone restart? Installation includes a restart; choose a time when the phone can be temporarily unavailable.
- What if I only see an older release? Install the newest version the Software Update screen offers for that model and current iOS version. Do not treat a major-version announcement as a promise that every phone receives it.
- Does automatic updating install immediately? Apple describes installation overnight while the phone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi, with notification beforehand. Use manual installation if the timing matters.
- Can I keep using the iPhone while it downloads? You can leave it connected while it downloads, but avoid other substantial downloads and do not interrupt the phone during preparation or installation.
- What if I do not have enough free space? Review iPhone Storage, delete unneeded content or enable Offload Unused Apps. iOS may also offer to remove apps temporarily and reinstall them after the update.
A safe, repeatable update routine
- Identify the iPhone model in Settings > General > About and compare it with Apple’s compatibility information.
- Complete an iCloud or computer backup.
- Check storage in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Connect to power and Wi‑Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Read the version offered and tap Download and Install.
- Leave the phone undisturbed through download, preparation and restart.
- Verify the result in Software Update or Settings > General > About.
- If wireless updating is unavailable or fails after the documented retry steps, connect the iPhone to a computer and use Finder or iTunes.
Apple’s current major-release guidance covers iOS 27, but “latest” is device-specific: point releases and compatible versions can differ by model and by the software already installed. Checking the Software Update screen on the iPhone is therefore more reliable than relying on a generic version number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to update an iPhone?
Back up the phone, connect it to power and Wi‑Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install when an update appears.
Which iPhones support iOS 27?
Apple’s list starts with the iPhone 11 family and includes later iPhone families, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Your Software Update screen determines what your specific model can install.
Why is an iOS update not showing?
The phone may be unsupported, unable to reach Apple’s update servers, short on storage, or the release may not be available wirelessly. Check storage and network settings, disconnect a VPN or proxy, and try Finder or iTunes if necessary.
Can I update without Wi‑Fi?
Apple’s documented wireless process calls for Wi‑Fi. Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network before downloading, or use a computer update when wireless updating is unavailable.
What should I do if the update fails?
Check power, Wi‑Fi, storage and VPN or proxy settings. If a downloaded update will not install, delete it from Settings > General > iPhone Storage and download it again. Use Finder or iTunes if it still fails.
Do I need to purchase a special cable?
Not for a wireless update. A computer update requires a data-capable cable that matches both the iPhone connector and the computer port; Apple does not specify one universal cable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Back up first, use Settings > General > Software Update over power and Wi‑Fi, and install the version your iPhone offers. If storage, network or verification problems block the wireless route, retry after the documented checks or use Finder on a newer Mac or iTunes on Windows or an older Mac.
