Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To move a dedicated server to the 2.0 build, stop it cleanly, back up saves and configuration, update Steam app 294420 with SteamCMD, pin the exact 2.0 branch if stable has moved on, merge settings into a custom XML file, and make sure every client runs the same build.
What you need before updating
This procedure applies to a self-hosted dedicated server. You need access to the machine that runs the server, its SteamCMD installation, the server directory, the launch script or service definition, and the location where world and player data are stored. Managed hosts expose equivalent controls through their own panels, but the names and branch options vary.

- Dedicated-server app: Steam app ID
294420. - Game-client app: Steam app ID
251570. This is the client installation, not the dedicated-server package. - Target: the 2.0-compatible branch and build, which may no longer be the default branch.
- Typical port: 26900 is the documented default; retain your existing port if you deliberately changed it.
- Backups: a separate copy of saves, XML files, launch scripts and useful logs.
- Maintenance window: enough time to download changed files, start the server, test a connection and restore the previous version if necessary.
Version 2.0 is a historical target rather than a promise that the current stable branch still contains that build. The public experimental phase began on June 16, 2025, with a planned stable release date of June 30, 2025. Those dates are historical orientation; use the branch manifest available in SteamCMD instead of assuming that today’s default branch is 2.0.
Record the current installation
Before stopping anything, create a short change record. Write down the reported server build, branch, absolute installation directory, launch command, custom configuration filename, mods, port, firewall or router rules, and save location. If the server is launched by a service manager, scheduled task or hosting panel, record that entry as well.

Knowing the old state makes a rollback possible and prevents a common mistake: updating one directory while the launch script still points to another. Check the process command line or script rather than relying on a remembered path.
Stop the server and create a real backup
- Warn players and stop the server through its normal shutdown command or console. Do not kill the process while it is writing world data.
- Wait until the process has exited and the log shows a clean shutdown.
- Copy the complete save directory to storage outside the server installation.
- Copy the shipped
serverconfig.xml, any custom XML such asmyserver.xml, launch scripts, service definitions and recent logs. - Label the backup with the date, old build and branch. Keep at least one copy that the update process cannot overwrite.
SteamCMD’s validate option checks installed files; it is not a save-game backup. A successful download therefore never substitutes for the backup above.

Choose the correct 2.0 branch
Steam distributes different builds through branches. If the default branch has advanced beyond 2.0, an ordinary update command will install the newer build, not the historical target. Obtain the exact branch identifier from the release or hosting documentation applicable to your installation, then verify that SteamCMD resolves it before replacing a working server.
Do not treat a label such as latest_experimental as a permanent synonym for 2.0. Branch names are changeable, and a name that once selected 2.0 can later point to another experimental build or disappear.
How to validate a branch without guessing
- Open SteamCMD and target the dedicated-server app, not the client app.
- Use the branch or beta-selection syntax documented for the exact 2.0 release. If the branch requires credentials, use the credentials specified by the release documentation; otherwise use the public branch method.
- Check the manifest or SteamCMD output for the selected branch and build before allowing files to be overwritten.
- Write the branch name and resulting build into your change record so the client installations can be matched later.
If no 2.0 branch is listed, do not substitute a similarly named branch. The practical choices are to use the current stable build, locate the exact pinned branch information, or restore the previous installation.

Update with SteamCMD
Run SteamCMD while the server process is stopped. The following commands use anonymous access, which is the normal pattern for a publicly downloadable dedicated-server package.
Windows
steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:7dtd-server" +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
Replace C:7dtd-server with the directory recorded earlier. If the 2.0 build requires a named branch, add the branch-selection argument supported by SteamCMD for that release to the app_update operation. Do not invent a branch value.
Linux
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
Run the command as the account that owns the server files, or use the same privilege model as the existing service. Mixing root-owned files with a non-root service account commonly produces permission errors on later updates.
What the command does
+force_install_dirselects the server installation directory.+login anonymouslogs into SteamCMD without a personal game account when the package permits anonymous access.+app_update 294420downloads or updates the dedicated-server files.validatechecks the downloaded installation and replaces damaged or missing files.+quitexits SteamCMD after the operation.
Rerunning the command is safe as an update mechanism: SteamCMD downloads only files it considers changed or invalid. It does not merge your XML settings and should not be used as a substitute for preserving them.
Preserve and merge server configuration
Updates can ship a revised serverconfig.xml. Treat that file as a template supplied by the new build, not as the permanent home for your custom settings.

- After the update, copy the newly shipped
serverconfig.xmlto a comparison file. - Keep your old custom configuration unchanged as a reference.
- Compare the old and new XML, including property names, allowed values and comments.
- Create or update a custom file such as
myserver.xmlby merging your desired values into the new schema. - Preserve newly added properties unless you have a documented reason to remove them.
- Check that the XML is well formed: every opening element has a closing element, quotation marks are paired, and special characters are escaped.
- Point the launch command at the custom file with
-configfile=myserver.xml.
Configuration schemas evolve between releases. Server-browser fields such as Region and Language have been added or changed in official updates, so comparing files is safer than copying the old XML over the new one wholesale.
Why a custom file is safer
A future validation or update may replace the shipped template. A separate custom file keeps your world name, difficulty, player limits, passwords, networking choices and other local decisions isolated from vendor defaults. Keep the custom file in a location that your backup routine includes, and make sure the launch script references the same filename after every update.
Launch the updated server
Start the executable or platform script with the custom configuration. A standard headless launch pattern is:
-quit -batchmode -nographics -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicated
Use the executable and path appropriate to your operating system. If your existing script already supplies additional required arguments, retain them and add the custom configuration switch rather than creating a second, conflicting launch command.
Do not start the server twice. Confirm that the old process is gone, start one instance, and watch its console or log from the first line through world loading. A server that appears in a process list but never completes initialization is not ready for players.

Verify the result before reopening the server
- Build: confirm the startup output reports the intended 2.0-compatible branch and build.
- Configuration: check that the custom XML was loaded and that there are no XML parse or unknown-property errors.
- World: verify that the expected world, player data and settings appear. Do not create a test world with the same name if you are unsure; stop and inspect the save path first.
- Network: confirm the configured port, firewall rule and router forwarding still match the server settings. The documented default is 26900.
- Listing: check the server browser name, region and language fields if you use them.
- Client: connect from a client running the same compatible branch and build.
- Gameplay: join with a test account, move through the world, verify inventory and player progression, and check that a clean shutdown writes data.
Keep the backup until players have connected successfully and the server has completed at least one normal save cycle.
Client and server compatibility
Every player must use a client build compatible with the dedicated server. A client on the current stable branch will generally not connect to a server pinned to an older 2.0 branch, and the reverse is also true. Have players select the same Steam branch, allow the client to finish downloading, and restart Steam if the displayed build does not change.
When a connection fails, compare the exact branch and build on both sides before changing ports or deleting saves. A version mismatch is a more common explanation than corrupted world data.

Mods are tied to game builds and can fail even when the unmodified server starts. For the first launch, disable nonessential mods or move them temporarily outside the active mod directory. Confirm that a 2.0-compatible version exists for each required mod before reinstalling it.
Re-enable mods one at a time, restarting and checking the log after each change. If the server stops loading after a particular mod returns, remove that mod, restore the last working backup if it altered data, and contact the mod author for a build-specific release. There is no complete compatibility matrix covering every mod.

Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamCMD reports an update or subscription error
- Confirm that you used app
294420, not client app251570. - Check that
force_install_dirpoints to the directory actually launched by the server. - Run SteamCMD with an account that can write to that directory.
- Retry without the server process running, then inspect the SteamCMD output for the first error rather than the final summary.
The server starts, but players cannot connect
- Compare the client and server branch and build exactly.
- Confirm that the launch script loaded the intended custom XML.
- Check the configured port against firewall and router rules; 26900 is only the documented default.
- Test from the host machine and from an external connection to distinguish a local startup problem from an inbound-network problem.
The server loads a new or empty world
- Stop the process immediately to avoid saving over the wrong state.
- Inspect the custom XML for changed world or save-location properties.
- Verify that the service account can read the original save directory.
- Check that the launch script is not using a second configuration file or a different working directory.
- Restore the known-good backup if the original data cannot be identified confidently.
Startup fails with XML errors
- Read the first parse error and note the property or line number.
- Compare that property with the newly shipped template.
- Remove duplicated elements, repair quotation marks and restore required newly introduced fields.
- Start with the shipped template plus a small number of known settings, then add remaining settings in groups.
The server crashes after mods are enabled
Disable all nonessential mods and confirm the unmodified 2.0 server starts. Reinstall only versions that explicitly support the selected build. If the crash persists without mods, inspect the server log and restore the pre-update installation before attempting another branch change.
Self-hosting or managed hosting for a pinned build
Self-hosting gives you direct control, but it also makes you responsible for every operational detail. A managed service can simplify routine administration, yet its branch list and file access may be limited. Compare the two approaches against the requirements of a historical target such as 2.0.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Branch pinning | You can select the Steam branch directly, subject to its availability. | Depends on the provider’s panel and supported branches; verify before purchasing. |
| Files and logs | Full access to SteamCMD output, XML files, saves and logs. | Access varies; some providers expose only selected files or log views. |
| Backups | You design, schedule and test them. | The provider may offer backups, but retention and restore scope must be confirmed. |
| Networking | You administer ports, firewall rules, router forwarding and uptime. | The provider normally handles public networking, while you configure the game server. |
| Restart automation | Available through scripts, services or scheduled tasks that you maintain. | Often included in a control panel, subject to the provider’s limits. |
| Cost | Uses your existing hardware, power and bandwidth. | Recurring hosting charges apply; exact prices and resources differ by provider. |
| Support | You diagnose SteamCMD, XML, networking and mod problems. | Support can reduce administration, but it may not cover third-party mods or obsolete branches. |
For either model, ask specifically whether the exact 2.0 branch can be selected, whether you can download saves and XML files, and how a complete restore works before migrating an established world.
Rollback plan
If the updated server fails verification or players cannot connect, stop it before making additional changes. Record the failed build and preserve the logs. Restore the backed-up installation files, custom XML and saves, then launch with the previously recorded command. Do not mix binaries from one branch with saves or mods from another while diagnosing the problem.
Once the old server is online, decide whether to retry with a verified branch, test the update in a separate directory, or remain on the working build. A parallel test directory lets you validate the 2.0 executable and configuration without risking the production world.
Final checklist
- Server stopped cleanly.
- Saves and configuration copied to separate storage.
- App ID 294420 selected.
- Exact 2.0 branch verified instead of assumed.
- SteamCMD update and validation completed in the correct directory.
- New XML compared with the old configuration.
- Custom file such as
myserver.xmlused at launch. - Build, world, ports, listing and logs checked.
- Clients moved to the same compatible branch and build.
- Mods tested only after the unmodified server works.
Bottom line
An update is safe when it is treated as a controlled migration: preserve the data, select the exact server branch, update app 294420, merge configuration into a custom XML file, and test compatibility before players return. If the default branch has moved past 2.0, pinning and verifying the historical branch is the critical step; no generic “latest” label guarantees that result.
