WhatsApp updates are installed through your phone’s app store. You do not normally need to uninstall WhatsApp, and your chats remain in the app when you install an in-place update.
On Android, use Google Play Store. On iPhone, use the App Store. The menu names differ from older guides: Android no longer uses My Apps & Games, while iPhone updates are found under your account page rather than an Updates tab.
How to update WhatsApp on Android
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, tap See details.
- Find WhatsApp Messenger and tap Update.
If WhatsApp is not listed, it may already be up to date. You can also open the WhatsApp Messenger listing in Google Play. If an update is available, the listing displays an Update button.

From Google Play Store → profile icon → Manage apps & device, tap See details under Updates available, then tap Update all. This installs WhatsApp along with the other pending app updates.

Turn on automatic WhatsApp updates on Android
You can enable automatic updates just for WhatsApp:
- Open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Manage.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap the More button, usually shown as three dots.
- Turn on Enable auto update.
To control automatic updates for all apps, go to Google Play Store → profile icon → Settings → Network Preferences → Auto-update apps. Google provides options for updating over Wi‑Fi or mobile data, using a limited amount of mobile data, updating over Wi‑Fi only, or disabling automatic updates.
How to update WhatsApp on iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the My Account button or your photo at the top of the screen.
- Tap App Updates.
- Find WhatsApp and tap Update.
To install every available app update, tap Update All on the same screen.

Turn on automatic WhatsApp updates on iPhone
Open Settings → Apps → App Store, then turn on App Updates. This setting applies to App Store apps, including WhatsApp.
If you are following an older guide that says to open an Updates tab in the App Store, the current iPhone path is your account page → App Updates.
What is the latest WhatsApp version?
There is not always one version number shared by Android and iPhone. WhatsApp releases can be platform-specific, and stores may display different version information.

Store listings change frequently, so the most reliable check is the listing for your own device. If it shows Open rather than Update, the store is reporting that the installed version is current for your account and device.
WhatsApp update stuck or not installing
Android troubleshooting
Work through these checks in order:
- Check the connection. Switch to a strong Wi‑Fi connection or confirm that mobile data is working.
- Check free storage. Open Settings → Storage. Google identifies less than 1 GB of available space as a possible cause of downloads and installations failing.
- Update Android. Open Settings → System → Software update → System update, then install any available system update.
- Restart Play Store. Close Google Play Store completely, reopen it, and try WhatsApp again.
- Restart the phone. Some app updates require a device restart before installation can finish.
- Check date and time. Go to Settings → System → Date & time and enable Set time automatically and the automatic time-zone option.
- Check your Google account. A Google account sign-in error can prevent automatic updates. Open Play Store and resolve any account warning shown under your profile.
iPhone troubleshooting
- Restart the iPhone, then try the update again.
- If the update is waiting behind other downloads, touch and hold the WhatsApp icon on the Home Screen and choose Prioritize Download.
- Check for an App Store message such as Billing problem with previous purchase or Verification required. Apple may require a valid payment method even for a free app, and an unresolved billing issue can block app updates.
- In some countries or regions, Apple may require confirmation that the user is an adult before certain apps can be downloaded.
Do you need to back up or reinstall WhatsApp?
You do not need to uninstall WhatsApp to install a normal store update. The Android and iPhone procedures both use the store’s Update button.
A current backup is still sensible before major troubleshooting or changing phones. However, deleting WhatsApp to force an update can create unnecessary risk: if a recent backup is unavailable, restoring chats after reinstalling may not produce the result you expect. Try the store update and connection, storage, account, and billing checks first.

Why WhatsApp may not show an Update button

FAQ
Will updating WhatsApp delete my chats?
A normal Google Play or App Store update is an in-place update and is not intended to delete chats. Do not uninstall the app as a first troubleshooting step, particularly if you are unsure whether your latest backup completed.
Why does WhatsApp say Open instead of Update?
The store usually shows Open when it believes you already have the latest version available for your device. The Android and iPhone store listings can also receive different releases, so do not compare one platform’s version number directly with the other.
Can I update WhatsApp without Wi‑Fi?
Yes. Android’s Google Play settings can allow updates over mobile data, although your carrier charges and data limits may apply. Wi‑Fi is preferable for a large download or an unreliable mobile connection.

What should I do if WhatsApp will not update on Android?
Check the connection and available storage, install pending Android system updates, reopen Play Store, restart the phone, verify automatic date and time, and resolve any Google account sign-in error.
What should I do if WhatsApp will not update on iPhone?
Restart the iPhone, try Prioritize Download from the WhatsApp Home Screen menu, and check for App Store billing or verification warnings. Those warnings can block updates even though WhatsApp is free.
