Update tvOS from Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software, then select Download and Install when an update is offered. Keep Apple TV connected to both power and the network throughout the download, restart and installation. You can enable automatic updates in the same screen, but a stalled update needs to be diagnosed by its exact on-screen message before you unplug or reset anything.
What a tvOS update does and what you need first
Apple TV downloads the software package, restarts, prepares the update, installs it and restarts again when finished. The process is not complete merely because the download has reached 100 percent. Leave the device plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet until the final restart. Apple’s instructions do not promise a standard installation time, so avoid judging progress against an assumed number of minutes.
Before starting, make sure the Apple TV remote can operate the menus, the television is showing the Apple TV input and your network is working normally. If the Software Updates screen says updating is unavailable, establish a network connection first; the device needs Wi-Fi or Ethernet to check for and obtain software. Apple’s current instructions are in Update your Apple TV and the Apple TV user guide’s Update Apple TV 4K software.

- Do not disconnect an Apple TV 4K while its update is in progress. Apple notes that its status light may flash slowly during the process.
Automatic or manual updates: which behavior fits you?
tvOS provides two update behaviors. Automatic updating minimizes maintenance, while a manual update lets you choose when a restart and installation will occur. Both controls are on the Software Updates screen.

| Automatic | Settings > System > Software Updates > Automatically Update | People who want Apple TV to maintain itself without checking regularly | Apple TV can download and install offered software without you starting each update. It still needs power and a working network connection. |

Automatic updating is a convenience setting, not a replacement for reliable networking. If the Apple TV is frequently offline, automatic installation may not occur; reconnect it and check the Software Updates screen manually.
How to update tvOS manually
- Open Settings. From the Apple TV Home Screen, select the Settings app.
- Open System. In Settings, choose System to reach device-management controls.
- Open Software Updates. Select Software Updates, then choose Update Software. Apple TV checks for an available tvOS update.
- Start the installation. If an update is offered, select Download and Install. Read the on-screen prompt before confirming.
- Leave connections untouched. Keep the Apple TV plugged into power and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Do not unplug it while it is downloading, preparing or applying the update.
- Allow both restarts. Apple TV restarts during the process and restarts again after the installation completes. Wait for the Home Screen or the normal sign-in prompt to return before using it.
The exact tvOS release number is intentionally not required for this procedure. Checking on the device avoids relying on a release number that can become outdated as Apple publishes newer software.
What the update screens mean
Downloading
During downloading, the Apple TV is obtaining the update from Apple. Keep the network stable and avoid changing routers, Wi-Fi passwords or network cables. If the connection drops, resolve the network problem before attempting another update rather than repeatedly interrupting the current one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreparing Update or Applying Update
These messages indicate that Apple TV is working through preparation or installation. A progress bar can appear to pause while this work continues. Give it time. If either message remains for more than one hour, Apple says to contact Apple Support before restarting or unplugging the device. The instruction is procedural, not a claim about a normal update duration. Use Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance when contacting support so you can describe the exact message shown.
Apple logo and progress bar with no text
This screen follows a different rule. If the progress bar under the Apple logo has shown no text and has not completed after more than one hour, Apple says to unplug and reconnect power to restart Apple TV. If the update still fails after that restart, contact Apple Support. Do not apply this power-cycle instruction to a screen that says Preparing Update or Applying Update; those messages call for contacting support before unplugging after the one-hour threshold.
An update error offers Restart, Reset All Settings or Restore
Use the least disruptive option first. Select Restart and see whether Apple TV can boot normally and update again. If the problem persists, Apple’s sequence is to try Reset All Settings and then Restore as a later step. These are recovery actions, not routine maintenance, so do not choose them simply because an installation is taking longer than expected. Follow the on-screen warnings and Apple Support’s instructions before proceeding.

When Software Updates says updating is unavailable
Start with connectivity rather than a reset. Apple requires Apple TV to be connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet to check for software. Confirm that another device can reach the internet through the same network, then check the Apple TV’s network settings and retry the update.

- Verify that the router is connected to the modem and that both devices have power.
- Check that the Apple TV has joined the intended Wi-Fi network, or that its Ethernet cable is fully seated at both ends.
- If the network name or password recently changed, forget the saved network and join it again.
- Restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart, then restart the router and modem by disconnecting their power, waiting briefly, and restoring power.
Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting sequence, including network rejoining and equipment restarts, is documented at If your Apple TV can’t connect to Wi-Fi.
Improve Wi-Fi reliability around Apple TV
Placement can make a marginal wireless connection fail during a large download. Apple recommends keeping Apple TV and the Wi-Fi router in the same room when possible, while avoiding direct contact or very close placement. Do not place Apple TV directly on the router or within 30 centimetres of it. Keep both devices clear of obstructions, especially metal surfaces that can interfere with wireless signals.
A practical placement check
- Move the router and Apple TV into the same room temporarily if the current signal is weak.
- Separate the two devices by more than 30 cm; do not stack one on the other.
- Remove metal objects or enclosed metal shelving between the devices.
- Retry the network connection and then check Software Updates again.
This is a troubleshooting arrangement, not a requirement that every home permanently place its equipment in the same room. Once the connection is reliable, you can return devices to a location that suits your coverage and cable layout.
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic option when your model supports it
A direct Ethernet connection can test whether Wi-Fi interference or signal strength is responsible for failed downloads. Connect Apple TV directly to the router, then retry the update. Ethernet is an option for troubleshooting, not a requirement for every Apple TV.
| Apple TV configuration | Ethernet guidance |
|---|---|
| Apple TV model with an Ethernet port | You can connect a network cable directly to the router to test or use a wired connection. |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi | This configuration has no Ethernet port, so an Ethernet cable cannot be used with it. Troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection instead. |
Check the ports on your exact model before buying or routing a cable. Apple documents the model distinction in Set up Apple TV 4K.

Restart Apple TV and network equipment in the right order
A restart clears a temporary software or connection state without immediately changing settings. Use the menu command first:
- On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Restart and confirm.
- Wait for the Home Screen to return.
- Disconnect power from the router and modem.
- Restore power to the modem and wait for it to reconnect to the service.
- Restore power to the router and wait for its network indicators to settle.
- Reconnect Apple TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if necessary, then test the Software Updates screen again.
If Wi-Fi credentials are the issue rather than a temporary outage, use the network controls to forget the current network and join it again with the correct password. Avoid using Reset All Settings or Restore as a first response to an ordinary connection failure.
Keep the HDMI connection suitable for your television
Updating tvOS does not change the cable requirement for displaying video. Apple’s setup guidance says Apple TV 4K needs an HDMI cable to connect to a television, and a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is needed for a 4K HDR television. Check the capabilities of your television before replacing a cable; a 4K HDR setup is the case that calls for the Ultra High Speed specification. The setup requirements are listed in Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide.
Symptoms of a connection problem after updating
- No picture: confirm the television is on the HDMI input used by Apple TV and reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Intermittent picture or HDR not appearing: verify that the television supports the selected format and that the cable meets the compatible Ultra High Speed requirement for 4K HDR.
- Network works but video does not: treat the HDMI path and television input as a separate check; a successful software download does not prove the display connection is good.
A maintenance routine that avoids unnecessary resets
Check Software Updates periodically if automatic updating is disabled. When you schedule a manual update, choose a time when losing access to the television for a restart is acceptable. Keep the Apple TV in a ventilated, unobstructed location and avoid moving its power or network connections during installation.
When something goes wrong, record the exact screen text before taking action. “Preparing Update,” “Applying Update,” and an Apple logo with a text-free progress bar have different Apple instructions. Recording the message, whether the bar is moving, and whether the device has already restarted gives Apple Support useful information and prevents an inappropriate unplug or reset.

- Confirm the Apple TV is plugged into a stable power outlet and that its power connection is not loose.
- Confirm the television is set to the HDMI input used by the Apple TV so you can recognize the normal restart screens.
- Test the network from another device, then verify Apple TV’s Wi-Fi connection or seated Ethernet cable.
- If the Wi-Fi password or network name changed, forget the old network and join the current one before starting.
- Move the box and router apart if they are touching or within 30 centimetres, and remove nearby metal obstructions.
- For a wired test, confirm that your particular Apple TV actually has an Ethernet port; the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi model does not.
- If you use Apple TV 4K with a 4K HDR television, verify that the HDMI cable is compatible with the Ultra High Speed requirement.
- Plan to leave the device alone through downloading, preparation, installation and both restarts. There is no official standard duration to use as a countdown.
Why the exact screen matters
It is tempting to unplug a box when a progress bar appears motionless, but the correct action depends on the label. Preparing Update and Applying Update are installation stages for which Apple recommends waiting and, after more than an hour, contacting Support before removing power. An Apple logo with a text-free bar has a separate power-reconnection instruction after more than an hour. Treating these displays as interchangeable can turn a recoverable pause into a more complicated failure.

Likewise, an unavailable update is usually a connection-check problem, not proof that the Apple TV needs to be erased. Restore the network path, restart the equipment, and check again. Reserve Reset All Settings and Restore for the error flow that specifically presents those choices or for instructions from Apple Support.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support when Apple’s one-hour rule applies to the Preparing Update or Applying Update screen, when a text-free Apple-logo progress bar still fails after the instructed power reconnection, or when the Restart, Reset All Settings and Restore sequence does not resolve the error. Have the Apple TV model, the exact on-screen wording, the point at which the progress bar stopped and the network connection type available. This information helps distinguish an installation state from a network or display problem.
For ordinary failures, work from the least disruptive action to the most disruptive: verify network and power, restart, retry, and only then consider settings reset or restore. That order protects your existing configuration while following Apple’s documented troubleshooting path.

What should I do if Preparing Update or Applying Update is stuck?
Wait rather than unplugging immediately. If the message remains for more than one hour, contact Apple Support before restarting or removing power. Do not use the separate Apple-logo power-cycle instruction for these text-labeled screens.
What if an Apple logo and progress bar have no text?
If that text-free screen has not completed after more than one hour, Apple says to unplug and reconnect power to restart Apple TV. Contact Apple Support if the update still fails afterward.
Why does Apple TV say updating is unavailable?
Apple TV needs Wi-Fi or Ethernet to check for and download software. Verify the router and modem have power, rejoin the saved network if credentials changed, restart Apple TV and the network equipment, and try again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use Ethernet to fix an update problem?
Ethernet is a useful troubleshooting test only on a model with an Ethernet port. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi has no Ethernet port, so that configuration must use Wi-Fi.
Which HDMI cable does Apple TV 4K need?
Apple TV 4K needs an HDMI cable for the television. A compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is needed for a 4K HDR television; check the television’s capabilities before replacing a cable.
When should I choose Reset All Settings or Restore?
Neither is routine maintenance. If an update error offers Restart, try it first. If the problem persists, follow Apple’s sequence of Reset All Settings and then Restore, paying attention to the warnings or Support’s instructions.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > System > Software Updates to update tvOS, keep power and network connected through both restarts, and let automatic updates handle future offers if that suits you. If progress stops, read the exact screen: text-labeled preparation stages require patience and Support after an hour, while a text-free Apple-logo bar has a specific power-reconnection step. Check router placement, model-specific Ethernet availability and 4K HDR HDMI compatibility before resetting anything.
