The safest VPS kernel update is a planned package update followed by a normal reboot, with an out-of-band console, a recoverable snapshot or backup, and the previous bootable kernel kept in the boot menu. A newly installed kernel is inactive until the VPS boots into it, so an update without a reboot does not complete the switch. Livepatch can cover selected urgent fixes, but it does not replace a planned reboot for a newer kernel.
What a kernel update changes on a VPS
The Linux kernel is the layer that manages CPU scheduling, memory, networking, storage, device drivers and security boundaries. Updating it can fix vulnerabilities, correct bugs, improve hardware or virtual-device support, and change behavior that applications depend on. On a VPS, the provider’s virtual hardware, bootloader and rescue tooling add another dependency layer: a package can install successfully while the machine still runs the old kernel.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the active version before making any change:
uname -r
Record that value, the distribution release, the hostname, the provider’s instance identifier and the services that must be available after maintenance. Keep the record with the change ticket so you can prove which kernel was active before and after the reboot.
Why a reboot is normally required
Installing a kernel places a new image and its modules on disk. The bootloader selects a kernel during startup; it does not replace the running kernel in place. The new version therefore becomes active only after the VPS boots again. Firmware, CPU microcode, low-level libraries and other dependency updates can also independently require a restart.

A normal reboot is the default because it lets service managers stop workloads, unmount filesystems, flush data and hand control to the bootloader in the expected order. A forced reset can interrupt those steps and turn a routine update into filesystem or application recovery.
Prepare recovery before touching packages
Confirm the distribution and release
Identify whether the guest is Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL or another distribution supported by your provider. Check the release and architecture using the distribution’s standard release information tools. Do not assume that a generic VPS image can use packages from another distribution or release. Kernel packages are built with a particular userspace, bootloader layout and module set in mind.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Verify an out-of-band path
Test the provider’s web console, serial console, rescue mode or equivalent before scheduling maintenance. SSH is an in-band path: if the new kernel breaks networking, firewall rules or the SSH daemon, you cannot use SSH to repair it. Confirm that you know how to open the console, send keystrokes to the bootloader and attach the rescue environment.
Make a restorable backup
Create or verify a provider snapshot or backup that covers the system disk and the data required to boot and run the service. Check its completion status and retention period; an unverified or expired snapshot is not a recovery plan. If the provider offers several snapshot types, confirm whether the snapshot is crash-consistent or application-consistent and stop or drain stateful workloads when your service requires a clean application state.
Check space and boot files
Kernel images, initrds and modules consume space, especially in /boot. Check the filesystem before updating:
df -h /boot
df -h /
Leave room for the new package and its initramfs while retaining the current bootable version. If /boot is nearly full, stop and remove only obsolete kernels through the distribution’s package tools after confirming which entries are still bootable. Do not delete files manually during the update.

Inventory modules and services
List services that must pass health checks after startup: web servers, databases, queues, monitoring agents, VPNs, storage mounts and scheduled workers. Identify DKMS or other out-of-tree modules, such as vendor storage, encryption, network or filesystem drivers. A kernel update can require those modules to be rebuilt; a module that has no compatible build can leave a device or service unavailable.
Choose a supported update path
Use the distribution and provider repositories that match the VPS image. Avoid random mainline builds, unofficial repositories and copied kernel packages. They may omit provider-specific configuration, secure-boot metadata, signing keys or module dependencies. Keep the prior bootable kernel in the bootloader until post-reboot validation is complete.
| Platform | Supported approach | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu or Debian family | Use APT packages from the configured distribution or provider repositories. | Review the transaction, ensure the bootloader receives the new entry, and retain the previous entry. |
| RHEL family | Use the supported dnf or yum workflow and Red Hat’s documented kernel tooling. |
Check subscription and repository status, module compatibility and the bootloader entry before rebooting. |
| Provider-customized image | Follow the provider’s image and kernel instructions when they differ from the guest distribution defaults. | Provider notices may specify a required bootloader, virtual driver or rescue procedure. |
Review the change before applying it
First inspect available updates and the proposed transaction. On APT systems, list upgrades and use a simulation when you need to see package additions, removals and configuration changes without changing the machine:
sudo apt update
apt list --upgradable
sudo apt -s full-upgrade
On RHEL systems, use the equivalent repository refresh and a non-applying transaction review supported by your release, for example:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo dnf check-update
sudo dnf update --assumeno
Some releases return a non-zero status from dnf check-update when updates are available; that status is not by itself a failed update. Read the transaction rather than blindly chaining commands.
Confirm that the transaction does not remove the running kernel, the previous known-good kernel, required provider agents or storage and network modules. Check DKMS output or build status where applicable. If a module fails to build, postpone the reboot until you have a supported replacement or a tested recovery plan.

Run the update in a controlled maintenance window
Choose a window long enough for package installation, reboot, console troubleshooting and rollback. The actual interruption depends on the provider, boot path and workload; do not promise a fixed number of seconds. Announce the window to users and operators, and put monitoring into maintenance mode only if you can still receive alerts about a failed boot or unreachable host.
- Drain or stop stateful work. Finish database writes, pause queue consumers, remove the node from load balancers and stop jobs that cannot tolerate an interruption. Stateless services can usually be restarted by the service manager, but verify that assumption for your application.
- Capture the pre-change state. Save
uname -r, package history, mounted filesystems, routes, firewall configuration and the status of critical services. Note the snapshot identifier and console location. - Apply the repository update. On Ubuntu or Debian, run the reviewed APT transaction, commonly
sudo apt full-upgrade. On RHEL, run the reviewedsudo dnf updateor the release’s supportedyumequivalent. Read prompts about configuration files and bootloader installation. - Confirm package completion. Wait for initramfs generation and bootloader configuration to finish. Treat errors, interrupted package states or failed DKMS builds as a stop condition; repair the package state before rebooting.
- Schedule the reboot. Warn users again, verify that console access is open, and use the normal reboot path, such as
sudo systemctl rebootorsudo reboot.
Do not use a provider power-cycle or hard reset as the first reboot method. If the normal path hangs, use the console to determine whether a service is blocking shutdown before escalating to a forced action.
Validate the VPS after it starts
Keep the console session available until SSH and application checks pass. Validate in layers rather than assuming that a reachable login proves the update succeeded.
- Kernel selection: run
uname -rand compare it with the intended package version. If it still shows the old version, inspect the bootloader entry and package status instead of repeatedly rebooting. - Failed units: run
systemctl --failed. Investigate every failed unit; a failure in a provider agent, mount, firewall or monitoring service can be more serious than a harmless optional unit. - Boot errors: inspect the current boot’s high-severity messages:
journalctl -b -p err..alert
- Networking and SSH: verify interfaces, addresses, routes, name resolution, firewall rules and SSH access from an independent network. Check both inbound and outbound connectivity.
- Storage: confirm that expected filesystems are mounted, permissions are correct and application data is readable. Check for filesystem errors or missing virtual disks.
- Time and scheduled work: verify the system clock, time synchronization and timers. A clock or timer failure can break certificates, jobs and distributed systems even when login works.
- Applications: run the service’s real health checks, not only a process listing. Test database connections, background workers, TLS endpoints, queue flow and representative user requests.
- Operations: confirm monitoring, log shipping, backups and alert delivery. Remove maintenance mode only after these checks are green.
Record the active kernel, validation results, warnings and any changed configuration. This creates a useful baseline for the next update and preserves evidence if a delayed failure appears.
Rollback when the new kernel is unhealthy
If the VPS boots but services fail
Use the console to select the previous kernel from the bootloader’s advanced or previous-version menu. Booting the known-good entry separates a kernel regression from an application or package problem. Once the service is stable, keep the new packages installed while you collect logs and identify the incompatible module, driver or configuration. Do not erase the new kernel until the provider or distribution support path tells you which package state is safe.
If the VPS does not boot
Open the provider console and capture the boot error, kernel panic, initramfs message or filesystem warning. Select the previous bootable kernel if it is offered. If no entry works, boot the provider’s rescue environment, attach the system disk, preserve logs and package metadata, and repair the filesystem or bootloader according to the provider’s documented procedure.

If the filesystem or package state is damaged
Stop making changes that overwrite evidence. Restore the pre-change snapshot when rapid service recovery is more important than in-place diagnosis, then retain the failed instance or its logs for investigation if the provider permits. After restoration, verify the restored kernel and application state before returning traffic.
Can you update without downtime?
A conventional kernel upgrade cannot activate a newer kernel without a transition away from the running one. You can reduce service interruption with redundancy, live patching or specialized kernel handoff, but each option has narrower support and a larger validation burden than a normal reboot.
| Method | Does it install and activate a newer kernel? | Interruption | Support and risk profile | Rollback considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal package update and reboot | Yes, after the reboot. | Requires a maintenance interruption; duration varies by provider and workload. | Broadest supported path when using distribution/provider packages; normal shutdown and firmware initialization occur. | Boot the previous kernel through the console or restore the snapshot. |
| Ubuntu Livepatch | Applies selected kernel fixes to the running kernel; it does not turn it into a newer kernel release. | Can avoid a reboot for supported high- and critical-severity fixes. | Limited to supported Ubuntu releases, architectures, kernel versions and flavours; personally rebuilt and unsupported kernels are outside coverage. | Requires the normal package and reboot plan for a newer kernel; keep the prior boot entry. |
kexec or a live-update framework |
Loads a kernel and initramfs directly and transfers execution without a full firmware initialization. | Can be shorter than a conventional reboot, but is not interruption-free. | Advanced, provider- and workload-dependent; forced paths can bypass normal shutdown handling and may leave devices or resources in an unexpected state. | Console access and a tested fallback remain essential; a failed handoff may require a hard reset or rescue boot. |
Using Livepatch responsibly
Livepatch is useful when an urgent, supported security fix is available and a reboot must be scheduled later. It matches patches to the exact running kernel version and supports only the release, architecture, flavour and kernel combinations in its support matrix. It does not automatically install ordinary APT security updates, and it cannot cover every kernel change.
Use it as a risk-reduction layer, not as permission to skip maintenance. Continue applying normal package updates, monitor patch status, and schedule a reboot for a newer kernel or any update outside the live-patch coverage. A personally rebuilt kernel, an unsupported development variant or an incompatible flavour can leave the VPS unpatched by the service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding kexec and live-update approaches
kexec loads a new kernel and initramfs from the running system and executes it directly, avoiding normal firmware initialization. That can shorten a transition, but it also changes the shutdown and hardware-initialization assumptions on which ordinary reboot procedures rely. A forced execution path may skip normal service shutdown, so stateful workloads and devices need explicit testing.
The Linux kernel’s Live Update Orchestrator is a specialized, kexec-based process intended to preserve selected resources and keep designated devices operational during a kernel transition. Treat it as an engineered platform capability, not a universal VPS command. Confirm provider support, workload compatibility, console recovery and monitoring before using it in production.

Ubuntu and RHEL operational differences
Ubuntu and Debian-family systems
Stay with released APT kernel packages from the configured updates repositories. Review the transaction, allow initramfs and bootloader hooks to complete, and verify that the bootloader offers the prior kernel. Livepatch coverage depends on the exact Ubuntu release, architecture, kernel version and flavour, so check eligibility for the individual VPS rather than assuming every Ubuntu image qualifies.

Follow the release-supported yum or dnf workflow and Red Hat’s kernel and live-patching boundaries. Subscription, repository and module state can affect which kernel is offered. Live patching is intended for supported security and bug-fix updates that do not require an immediate reboot; it does not make every kernel or userspace update reboot-free.
Common failure branches
The update says there is not enough space
Do not force installation by deleting arbitrary files. Inspect /boot, package caches and old kernel entries, then remove only obsolete packages through the distribution’s package manager. Re-run the transaction review and confirm that both the running and previous bootable kernels remain available.
SSH disappears after reboot
Use the provider console first. Check the active kernel, interface configuration, routes, firewall rules, SSH service status and failed units. If networking or a module is broken only under the new kernel, select the previous boot entry and investigate from the stable system.
A DKMS or vendor module fails
Read the build log and identify whether the module supports the target kernel and architecture. Obtain a supported module package or provider instruction before relying on the new kernel. A module that is essential for storage, networking or encryption is a reason to postpone the reboot, not to continue and hope for recovery.
The VPS boots but applications behave differently
Compare logs and health checks with the pre-change baseline. Kernel changes can expose timing, filesystem, networking or driver assumptions without producing an obvious boot error. Roll back to the previous kernel if service impact is material, then reproduce the issue in a non-production instance or maintenance window.
