The safe way to update an Onkyo AV receiver is model-first: read the firmware notice for the exact model and production version, use only the method that notice permits, prepare the required USB drive or network connection, and leave the receiver untouched until its documented completion message appears. Do not assume that another Onkyo model uses the same menu path, file system, update route, or restart behavior.

Why the exact model matters

Onkyo publishes firmware instructions and release notes by receiver model. Two receivers that look similar can have different update routes, storage requirements, completion indicators, and warnings. The TX-NR5100 documentation permits network and USB updates, while the documented TX-SR494 update is USB-only. Treat those as model-specific facts, not as a universal Onkyo procedure.

Start with the model number printed on the receiver chassis, front-panel label, carton, or original purchase record. Record the complete designation, including suffixes or regional variants. Then open that model’s product or support page on Onkyo’s regional website and read the current firmware notice, update instructions, and release notes before downloading anything.

  • Confirm that the notice is for your exact model, region, and production version.
  • Check the publication date and firmware version so you do not follow an obsolete notice when a newer one is posted.
  • Read every warning about network connections, USB formatting, file extraction, power, and connected HDMI equipment.
  • Keep the receiver’s current firmware version available for comparison after installation.

Check whether your receiver actually needs the update

Firmware notices can apply only to a particular production run. The Onkyo TX-SR494 update PDF dated 29 May 2019 is a useful example: it says the update applies to older production units and that units marked with a “B” on the serial label do not need that update. That limitation belongs to that historical TX-SR494 notice. It is not a rule for every receiver, and the presence or absence of a “B” must not be used to decide another model’s status.

Compare the version shown in the receiver’s firmware-information screen with the version named in the current notice. If the notice says your production version is excluded, stop there. Installing an unrelated file can leave the receiver unusable and may complicate service support.

Understand the available update routes

Use the route explicitly supported for your model. If both network and USB are listed, choose based on the receiver’s connection and the instructions’ cautions rather than assuming one method is always superior.

Route Use it when Requirements and cautions Evidence from the documented models
Network The exact receiver’s notice permits a network update and the receiver has a stable connection. Do not change LAN or wireless connections during installation. Keep the receiver powered and avoid using prohibited connected equipment. Permitted for the TX-NR5100. The TX-SR494 document discussed here does not use this route.
USB The exact receiver’s notice provides a USB package and procedure, or network updating is unavailable. Prepare the drive exactly as stated: capacity, file system, extraction, folder layout, and connection timing all matter. Supported by the TX-NR5100 with USB storage of at least 128 MB. The cited TX-SR494 procedure is USB-only and calls for an empty FAT-formatted drive with at least 128 MB available.

The TX-SR494 instructions recommend USB for the update they cover, describing it as faster and more reliable for that procedure. That recommendation should not be generalized to every Onkyo receiver. Conversely, the TX-NR5100 notes explicitly list both routes, so a network-connected owner can follow the network procedure if the receiver’s own instructions allow it.

Prepare a USB update safely

For a model that supports USB updating, use a USB flash drive that meets the notice’s minimum capacity. The two documented examples specify at least 128 MB: the TX-NR5100 notes require USB storage of 128 MB or larger, while the TX-SR494 instructions require at least 128 MB available. A larger drive is not automatically better; compatibility depends on the model’s instructions and the drive’s formatting.

  1. Back up the receiver’s settings if the manual provides a backup function. Firmware installation can reset settings on some products, but the supplied model documents do not establish that behavior for every Onkyo receiver. Record speaker distances, levels, crossover points, input assignments, network credentials, and custom sound settings so you can restore them if necessary.
  2. Download only the package linked from the exact model page. Check the model name, version, region, and production-version limitation in the notice before opening the file.
  3. Format the drive as instructed. For the cited TX-SR494 procedure, the drive must be empty and FAT-formatted, with at least 128 MB available. Do not substitute a different file system unless your model’s manual explicitly says to do so.
  4. Extract the update package. Copy the extracted update contents to the drive in the location and folder structure specified by the receiver’s instructions. Do not copy only the downloaded archive if the notice tells you to extract it.
  5. Safely eject the drive from your computer. A partially written or still-mounted drive can contain incomplete files.
  6. Disconnect connections only when the model’s instructions require it. The TX-SR494 USB procedure says to disconnect wired or wireless networking before starting. Do not apply that instruction to another model unless its documentation says the same.

Use a plain USB flash drive for this task. The documented requirements establish a minimum of 128 MB, not a particular brand, speed rating, or capacity beyond that minimum.

Prepare a network update

A network update is available only when the exact receiver’s notice and firmware menu support it. Before starting, confirm that the receiver has a stable wired or wireless connection and that you know how to restore that connection if the update changes network settings.

  • Use the receiver’s own network test or status screen if provided.
  • Stop downloads, streaming, or other activity that could destabilize the connection.
  • Leave the network cable or wireless association unchanged once the update begins.
  • Keep the receiver connected to reliable power; do not use a switched outlet that might turn off unexpectedly.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts exactly, including any consent, download, or restart step.

The TX-NR5100 notes identify network updating as a supported route. The TX-SR494 instructions for the 2019 update instead describe USB-only installation and specifically tell the user to disconnect networking for that procedure. Those instructions cannot be interchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the update from the receiver

Once the medium or network is ready, use the firmware-update function exposed by the receiver’s own menus or front panel. Menu names and navigation differ by model, so use the exact manual rather than a generic button sequence copied from another receiver.

  2. Open the model’s firmware or setup menu and select the update option named in its instructions.
  3. If using USB, insert the prepared drive only when the instructions call for it. If using network, select the network update route only when it is listed for your model.
  4. Read the displayed version and confirmation screen. Cancel if the model, version, or update method does not match the notice you read.
  5. Approve the installation and watch the receiver’s display for its progress or restart instructions.

Never improvise by loading a file intended for a different model, renaming files to force recognition, or selecting a recovery option that the notice does not describe.

What to avoid while firmware is installing

Interruptions are the most avoidable source of update failure. During the TX-SR494 procedure, Onkyo warns against removing receiver power or the USB memory device and says not to change a LAN connection during a network update or operate HDMI-connected components while the process is running. Follow equivalent or stricter warnings in your own model’s manual.

  • Do not press the receiver’s power button unless the instructions explicitly tell you to.
  • Do not unplug the receiver, switch off its power strip, or allow a household breaker or timer to cut power.
  • Do not remove or reconnect the USB drive after installation starts.
  • Do not change wired or wireless network connections during a network installation.
  • Do not operate HDMI-connected players, televisions, game consoles, or other components when the model’s instructions prohibit it.
  • Do not insert another drive, browse media, change inputs, or launch a second update.

“Do not shut the unit off until ‘Complete’ is shown on the front display.”

Wait for completion, then verify the installed version

Do not judge completion by a temporary blank screen, a fan stopping, or a single automatic restart. Wait for the exact completion indication in the model’s instructions. For the documented TX-SR494 update, the instructions say the process can take up to 30 minutes, require “Complete” to appear on the front display, and then direct the user to inspect the firmware version in the firmware menu.

  1. Leave the receiver and update medium alone until the documented completion message or final restart has occurred.
  2. After completion, allow the receiver to return to its normal operating state before removing a USB drive.
  3. Open the firmware-information screen specified by the manual and record the installed version.
  4. Compare that version with the release notice. If it did not change, do not repeatedly restart the process; review the model’s troubleshooting instructions first.
  5. Reconnect networking or HDMI equipment only after the procedure permits it.
  6. Test basic operation: power, audio output, video pass-through, inputs, and any feature named in the release notes.

Model example: Onkyo TX-SR494

The TX-SR494 example demonstrates why dated instructions need boundaries. Its official update PDF is dated 29 May 2019 and applies only to older production units. Units marked with “B” on the serial label are identified in that document as not needing the update. Before using any historical file, check the current TX-SR494 product or support page to determine whether a newer notice supersedes it.

Requirements stated for that update

  • USB-only installation for the update covered by the PDF.
  • An empty, FAT-formatted USB drive with at least 128 MB available.
  • Extracted update contents copied to the drive as instructed.
  • Wired and wireless networking disconnected before the USB procedure.
  • No power removal, USB removal, LAN change during a network update, or operation of HDMI-connected components contrary to the warnings.

Completion and timing

The document says the update may take up to 30 minutes. Wait until “Complete” appears on the front display, then use the firmware menu to verify the version. That duration and display wording are specific to the cited TX-SR494 instructions; they are not a promise for other Onkyo receivers.

Onkyo’s TX-NR5100 firmware notes dated 3 March 2026 identify version R142-1219-0290-0034. Those notes state that the receiver can be updated over the network or by USB and that USB storage must be 128 MB or larger. The notes refer users to the instruction manual for the detailed USB procedure, so do not import the TX-SR494 formatting or network-disconnection steps unless the TX-NR5100 manual says to do so.

How to choose between network and USB when both are offered

Question Choose network when Choose USB when
Is the route documented for this exact receiver? The model’s current notice explicitly supports network updating. The notice supplies a USB package and procedure.
What connection is available? The receiver has a stable network connection that can remain unchanged. You can prepare the required drive and keep it connected for the entire process.
What does the notice warn about? You can comply with its LAN or wireless and HDMI-use restrictions. You can meet its capacity, formatting, extraction, and networking requirements.
How do you verify success? Use the model’s stated completion indicator and firmware-information screen. Use the same model-specific completion and version checks; safely remove the drive only afterward.

There is no portfolio-wide winner. The TX-SR494 document favors USB for its particular update, while the TX-NR5100 notes permit both methods. Reliability depends on the receiver, release, connection, and compliance with the instructions.

Troubleshoot without making the problem worse

The receiver does not detect the USB drive

  • Stop and confirm that the drive meets the exact capacity and file-system requirements.
  • Check that the downloaded package was extracted and that the files are in the required location, rather than still inside an archive or an extra folder.
  • Verify the package belongs to the exact model, region, production version, and release listed in the notice.
  • Do not rename files or try a different firmware file simply because it looks similar.

The update stops or reports an error

Do not remove power or the USB drive while the receiver is still displaying an installation state. Note the exact message, leave the receiver in the state required by the manual, and consult the model’s official support instructions. If the manual provides a defined retry procedure, follow it exactly; otherwise, contact Onkyo support rather than attempting an unlisted recovery sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The receiver restarted but the version did not change

Wait for the final completion indication and check the firmware-information screen again. If the version remains unchanged, confirm that the update was actually intended for the installed production version. A historical notice may exclude newer units, as the TX-SR494 “B” production example illustrates. Do not repeat an installation until the support documentation explains why.

The receiver will not start normally after an interruption

Stop cycling the power and do not load another file. Record what happened, including whether power or USB was removed and what the display shows. Use Onkyo’s regional support destination or an authorized service route for model-specific recovery. The supplied procedures do not establish a universal reset or recovery command, so inventing one can cause further damage.

After the update

Restore only the connections and settings that the manual permits. Re-enter network credentials if necessary, restore your recorded audio and input settings, and test the functions named in the release notes. On the TX-NR5100, for example, test the relevant Chromecast behavior, tagged music files, DSD playback, and Standby Through if those features matter to you. Keep the downloaded notice and the installed version in your records so future support conversations have a precise starting point.

When to contact Onkyo support

Use Onkyo’s official regional support site for product and warranty assistance when the correct file is unclear, your production version is excluded, the update fails, or the receiver does not recover normally. Have the exact model, serial information, current firmware version, update version, region, update route, and any on-screen error available. A service center is safer than an improvised firmware file or an unlisted recovery procedure when the receiver remains inoperable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
