Update a smart refrigerator only through its manufacturer-approved app, on-screen menu, or a support-directed procedure for the exact model and region. Record the model first, confirm stable Wi-Fi and power, check storage and current software, back up photos or other data when advised, then leave the appliance connected until it confirms completion. A generic firmware file or an improvised USB installation can make the refrigerator unusable.

What a refrigerator firmware update does

Firmware is the embedded software that controls a refrigerator’s connected features and, on some models, coordinates sensors, displays, alerts, and appliance communications. A manufacturer may issue an update to correct a fault, improve performance, add a feature, close a security problem, or maintain compatibility with its mobile service. The update is tied to the appliance’s model, hardware revision, market, and current software version; there is no universal smart-refrigerator firmware package.

Connected models normally receive software over the home network. The refrigerator or its companion app checks whether an update is available, downloads the package, and installs it locally. During installation, the display, controls, cameras, notifications, or network connection may be unavailable temporarily. That is why a stable electrical supply and an uninterrupted network connection matter more than the speed of the download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update can have more than one stage: eligibility checking, download, verification, installation, restart, and reconnection. A notification that says the download is complete does not necessarily mean the appliance has finished installing. Treat the process as active until the app or refrigerator gives an explicit completion or failure message.

Before you start: a safety checklist

Complete these checks before selecting an update command:

  • Identify the exact appliance. Photograph or write down the model and serial numbers from the rating label or owner documentation. Menus, eligible releases, storage capacity, and support periods differ by model and country.
  • Use the correct account and app. A GE connected refrigerator uses SmartHQ; LG documents updates in the ThinQ app; Samsung Family Hub uses its on-device software screen and over-the-network prompts. Install the current official app from the normal app store, sign in to the account paired with the refrigerator, and do not substitute a file intended for another model.
  • Stabilize Wi-Fi. Confirm that the refrigerator is connected to the intended home network and that the phone running the app can reach the internet. If the appliance is at the edge of wireless coverage, move the router or use the manufacturer’s documented network procedure before starting.
  • Keep power available. Do not begin while the appliance is being moved, the circuit is unreliable, or a planned outage is imminent. Leave the refrigerator plugged in for the entire download and installation.
  • Check space and data. On Family Hub models, insufficient internal storage can prevent an update. Remove unneeded content first. If the appliance stores gallery photos, notes, or other personal data, follow the manufacturer’s backup instructions before updating or troubleshooting.
  • Plan for food safety. An update should not be treated as a reason to switch off cooling. Keep doors closed while the software installs and have a temperature check available for the verification step.

Do not schedule an update when you will be away for an extended period or when the refrigerator is packed with food that would be difficult to replace. The process should preserve normal cooling, but you need to be available to read an error, verify temperatures, or contact support if something goes wrong.

The safe update procedure

  1. Record the current state. Note the software version, Wi-Fi network, important temperature settings, alert preferences, and any unusual behavior. A photograph of the version screen can help support staff if the update fails.
  2. Open the official update location. Use the refrigerator’s notification or settings menu, or the manufacturer’s app paired with that appliance. Do not search the web for a supposedly newer firmware image.
  3. Read the release prompt. Check that the displayed model is yours, review any stated changes, and note whether the process warns about a restart, unavailable features, or required free storage.
  4. Start the download. Accept the update or choose the app’s equivalent command. Keep the phone near the network if the app is coordinating the process, but do not repeatedly tap the button if the screen appears slow.
  5. Let installation finish. Do not unplug the refrigerator, turn off its circuit, remove a connected cable, reset the appliance, or repeatedly press controls while the progress indicator is active. The screen or app may restart more than once.
  6. Wait for an explicit result. Continue waiting until the app or refrigerator reports completion, failure, or a request for a specific action. A blank or temporarily unresponsive display during a restart is not, by itself, proof that the appliance is bricked.
  7. Verify the version and connection. Reopen the software-version screen or app status, confirm that the new version is shown, and check that the refrigerator has rejoined Wi-Fi.
  8. Check essential operation. Confirm cooling, temperature readings, door and temperature alarms, ice or water functions where fitted, and the connected features you rely on. If a safety-critical function behaves abnormally, stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician.

If the app offers “later” or a similar choice, postponing is safer than starting during an unstable network connection. Choose a time when the appliance can remain powered and undisturbed. Never assume that closing the phone app cancels an update; follow the app’s status and the refrigerator display instead.

Manufacturer-specific update paths

Manufacturer and connected range Normal delivery Documented path or behavior Important qualification
GE Appliances connected refrigerators SmartHQ app notification; critical updates may be pushed automatically SmartHQ shows an update notification. Choose to update immediately or later, select Apply, and wait for the download and installation to finish. GE says refrigerators generally do not require updates. Non-Wi-Fi models should be registered and owners should follow direct manufacturer communications if an update is needed.
LG connected refrigerators ThinQ app upgrade notice Open Menu → UP Appliance Center, select the available upgrade, then choose Upgrade. LG states that upgrade timing and functions vary by product and model.
Samsung Family Hub Over-the-network prompt on a Wi-Fi-connected appliance Check Settings → About Family Hub → Software version. When a rollout reaches the appliance, follow the on-screen update prompt. Storage can block an update. Samsung’s USB instructions concern backing up gallery photos on supported models; they do not establish a universal USB installation method.

This comparison reflects delivery method, connectivity requirement, storage and backup behavior, and the limits of each manufacturer’s documentation. A menu name can change with a model generation or regional software release, so use the wording shown on your own appliance rather than forcing a different path.

GE Appliances and SmartHQ

For a Wi-Fi-enabled GE refrigerator, pair the appliance with SmartHQ and wait for the update notification. GE describes an Update Available notification for performance updates; critical updates may be pushed automatically while the refrigerator is connected. The notification lets you update immediately or postpone it. When you proceed, select Apply and allow several minutes for the download to complete before interacting with the appliance.

If Wi-Fi drops during the process, GE says the appliance should reconnect when the connection becomes available and that features already downloaded remain available. Do not interpret that behavior as permission to cut power or force a reset. If the refrigerator is not a Wi-Fi model, GE says owners should register it and follow direct manufacturer communications rather than trying to install connected-appliance software.

LG ThinQ

LG’s documented ThinQ route is in the app: open Menu, choose UP Appliance Center, select the upgrade shown for the refrigerator, and tap Upgrade. The notice appears only when LG has made a compatible upgrade available for that product. LG notes that both timing and resulting functions differ by product and model, so an absent notice is not evidence that a different model’s package should be installed manually.

Samsung Family Hub

On Family Hub, open Settings → About Family Hub → Software version to identify the installed release. With Wi-Fi connected, Samsung describes an over-the-network prompt appearing after the update is rolled out to the appliance. Follow that prompt and leave the refrigerator powered until it reports completion.

If the update will not start, inspect available internal storage. Samsung support identifies insufficient storage as a reason an update can be blocked and advises freeing space. Remove content only after deciding what must be preserved, and back up gallery photos before deleting them.

Can you update a Family Hub refrigerator with a USB drive?

Do not assume that a USB flash drive is a general firmware installer. Samsung’s documented USB use for Family Hub includes connecting USB memory to back up gallery photos on supported models. That is a data-backup function, not proof that any USB drive containing a downloaded file can install software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A USB-based recovery or installation is safe only when the exact model’s current manual or Samsung support instruction explicitly requires it and specifies the file, formatting, port, and sequence. Model numbers that look similar can use different hardware and software. A package for the wrong appliance can fail validation or leave the control system unusable. Never obtain a refrigerator firmware file from an unofficial download site, forum attachment, or generic “latest version” page.

If you buy a USB flash drive for photo backup, treat it as an accessory for that specific supported function, not as insurance that firmware can be installed manually. Confirm the model’s compatibility and backup instructions first. Eject the drive using the appliance’s normal procedure, and keep the backup in a safe place before removing or deleting originals.

Will an update delete photos or settings?

A normal manufacturer-delivered update is not the same operation as a factory reset, but the effect on personal data is model- and release-specific. Read the update notice for your appliance and back up anything important when the manufacturer advises it. For Family Hub, Samsung documents USB backup for gallery photos and warns that a full reset deletes personal data.

Record settings that would be inconvenient to recreate, including temperature targets, alert choices, connected accounts, and custom routines. If the refrigerator offers an export or backup option, complete it before troubleshooting. Do not choose a factory reset merely because an update is slow; reset is an escalation step that can erase data and does not fix a network or storage problem by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a successful update, compare the settings with your notes instead of assuming every preference survived unchanged. Reauthorize an account only through the official app or appliance screen. If a setup screen unexpectedly asks for a reset, stop and contact support before accepting it, especially when photos or other personal data are not backed up.

What to do if the update is stuck

First determine whether the appliance is still working. A progress screen, a known restart, or a temporarily offline app can be normal. Do not interrupt power while installation activity is visible.

If the percentage or status has not changed

  1. Leave the refrigerator connected to power and wait through the period specified by the on-screen message. Avoid pressing the same update control repeatedly.
  2. Check the household router from another device. If the whole network is offline, restore the internet connection without unplugging the refrigerator.
  3. Look for a completion message, a reboot, or a return to the home screen. Then verify the software version rather than assuming failure from a temporary blank display.
  4. If the appliance eventually reports failure, capture the exact error, model, serial number, and version for the manufacturer’s support team.

There is no universal completion time or failure rate for refrigerator firmware. A screen that appears unchanged does not justify guessing, repeatedly restarting, or installing a second package. Follow any wait instruction shown by the manufacturer and preserve the error details if escalation is needed.

If no update appears

  • Recheck the model, country or region, and current software version; rollouts are not simultaneous for every appliance.
  • Confirm that the refrigerator is actually online, not merely that the phone has internet access.
  • For Family Hub, free internal storage and retry from the software-version screen.
  • For GE, check SmartHQ for an Update Available notice; critical updates may arrive automatically while the appliance is connected.
  • For LG, use Menu → UP Appliance Center in ThinQ and confirm that the refrigerator is the selected appliance.

An absent notice can mean the appliance is already current, the rollout has not reached that model or region, the appliance is offline, or the model is outside the supported range. It is not a reason to download a file from another owner’s refrigerator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If cooling, alarms, or controls behave abnormally afterward

Check the displayed temperatures and whether the appliance has reconnected to Wi-Fi. Keep doors closed and avoid repeated resets. If cooling, temperature alarms, or another safety-relevant function is abnormal, contact the manufacturer promptly or arrange a qualified appliance technician. Firmware troubleshooting should not become an attempt to repair an electrical or refrigeration fault.

Checking support life and eligibility

Software availability ends by model and market; a refrigerator that is still physically sound may not receive every newer feature. Samsung announced that Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung home appliances are eligible for software updates for up to seven years after launch for models launched from 2024. Samsung also qualifies that statement: hardware limitations can restrict updates, and service availability varies. The seven-year figure is therefore an eligibility policy for the specified launch group, not a promise that every feature will run on every appliance or that older models receive the same period.

GE and LG guidance likewise directs owners to the model-specific app or support channel rather than promising one universal support duration. Keep the model and serial number available when asking whether an update is still offered. Ask support whether the release is appropriate for your country and hardware revision, and whether a service visit is required if the appliance cannot complete an official update.

Mistakes that create avoidable risk

  • Installing a firmware file found on a third-party website.
  • Using a USB drive because another refrigerator model supports USB installation.
  • Unplugging the appliance or switching off the circuit during installation.
  • Starting with weak Wi-Fi and assuming a phone’s strong signal means the refrigerator has the same connection.
  • Ignoring an internal-storage warning on a display appliance.
  • Factory-resetting before backing up photos and recording settings.
  • Continuing to experiment after cooling or temperature alarms become abnormal.
  • Assuming that a similar model number, neighboring country, or newer app listing makes a package compatible.
  • Deleting photos or disconnecting the refrigerator from its account before confirming that a backup exists.

Printable update checklist

  1. Write down the exact model, serial number, region, and current software version.
  2. Pair the refrigerator with its official app or open its official update menu.
  3. Confirm reliable Wi-Fi, internet access, and uninterrupted electrical power.
  4. Check available storage and back up photos or other personal data as directed.
  5. Start only from the official notification or documented menu path.
  6. Leave the refrigerator alone until the software reports completion.
  7. Verify the new version, Wi-Fi reconnection, cooling, alerts, and important functions.
  8. Compare settings and personal data with your notes and backup.
  9. Escalate with the manufacturer if the update is unavailable, fails, or leaves an essential function abnormal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update my smart refrigerator firmware?

Identify the exact model and region, connect the refrigerator to reliable Wi-Fi, check the current version, and use only the manufacturer’s official app or on-device update menu. Keep power connected until completion is confirmed.

What should I do if the refrigerator update is stuck?

Do not unplug or reset it while installation is active. Check whether the home network is online, wait for the appliance’s stated instruction, and record any error, model, serial number, and software version before contacting the manufacturer.

Will a refrigerator software update delete my photos or settings?

The result is model- and release-specific. Back up important photos and record settings first. A factory reset is different from a normal update and can delete personal data, so do not use reset as the first troubleshooting step.

Why is no update available in my refrigerator app?

The appliance may already be current, offline, outside the rollout for its model or region, short on storage, or beyond its supported period. Verify the model, connection, storage, and current version through the official support channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will my smart refrigerator receive updates?

Support is model- and market-specific. Samsung says eligible Wi-Fi-enabled home appliances launched from 2024 can receive updates for up to seven years after launch, subject to hardware and service-availability limits.

The Bottom Line

Use the exact model’s official app or refrigerator menu, not an improvised file or USB method. Stabilize Wi-Fi and power, check storage, back up personal data, wait for an explicit completion message, and escalate to the manufacturer if cooling, alarms, connectivity, or installation status remains abnormal.
