Open the Epic Games Launcher, select the Settings icon beside your profile, and choose RESTART AND UPDATE (or UPDATE AND RESTART, depending on the launcher state). Accept the Windows User Account Control prompt if it appears. After the restart, Early Preview users can confirm the installed version at Epic Games logo > Settings > About > Check now.
If the update control is missing or an outdated-version error appears, completely exit and relaunch the launcher, reconnect to the internet, and check Settings again. A launcher update is separate from updating a game that uses another publisher’s launcher.
What the Epic Games Launcher update controls do
Epic distributes launcher updates through the application itself. The control is normally in the top-right Settings menu, next to your profile. Depending on the release and the launcher state, Epic labels it either RESTART AND UPDATE or UPDATE AND RESTART. Both labels perform the same basic job: close the current launcher session, install the available launcher update, and open the updated application.

An update may be required before the library, store, installs, or game verification work correctly. The launcher does not have one permanent version number that can safely be used as a universal “latest” reference. Epic’s support articles use version checks and state-specific instructions instead, so verify from inside your own installation.

Before you start
- Keep the computer connected to the internet. Epic specifically tells users with outdated-version errors to reconnect before trying again.
- Save work in other applications. The launcher will restart itself while applying the update.
- On Windows, be prepared to approve a User Account Control (UAC) prompt. Without that approval, installation may not complete.
- If you are offline, bring the computer online before checking for an update. Offline mode can prevent the launcher from obtaining the required version.
- Close a game or another Epic process if the launcher says it cannot restart. A clean exit gives the updater access to files that may otherwise be in use.
How to update the launcher in the normal interface
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Look at the top-right corner and click the Settings icon beside your profile.
- Scroll or look through the Settings page for RESTART AND UPDATE. Some releases show UPDATE AND RESTART instead.
- Click the available update-and-restart control.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes to allow the installer to make changes.
- Wait for the launcher to close, install the update, and reopen. Do not terminate the process while the update is being applied.
- When the launcher returns, open Settings again if you need to verify its version or confirm that the update control is no longer present.
If neither update label appears, Epic is not presenting an update through that screen at that moment. That can mean the installed launcher is already current, the application has not refreshed its status, or the launcher is in an error state. Use the recovery steps below rather than repeatedly clicking unrelated library controls.
How to verify that the installed launcher is current
Early Preview interface: use About and Check now
Epic’s Early Preview interface has a direct version check:
- Click the Epic Games logo in the top-left corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select About.
- Next to Version, click Check now.
The check tells the launcher to compare its installed version with the version available to it. If an update is available, follow the resulting restart-and-update prompt. If no update is offered, the launcher has completed its own check for that installation and interface.
When the About screen is not available
Epic’s instructions for an “all games unavailable” situation say to scroll to the bottom of the launcher and read the light-grey version text. The first four numbers identify the launcher version shown in that support scenario. That article describes a value lower than 20.2.4 as out of date for its troubleshooting case.

20.2.4 is not a universal current-version number. It is a diagnostic threshold used by that particular Epic support article, not proof that 20.2.4 is the newest release today. Use it only in the context of that article; rely on the launcher’s own update control or Early Preview’s Check now for a current status.
What “up to date” can and cannot tell you
A successful launcher check confirms the launcher installation, not every game in your library. A title may still have a game update waiting, may require a separate publisher launcher, or may be unavailable for another account or connectivity reason. Treat the launcher version and each game’s update state as separate checks.
Choose the fix that matches the message or screen

Fix LS-0002 and other outdated-version errors
LS-0002 means the running launcher is considered outdated for the operation you are attempting. Epic’s documented recovery is deliberately short:

- Start it again.
- Open the top-right Settings menu.
- Select UPDATE AND RESTART if that control appears.
- If you are attempting to play or manage games offline, connect to the internet and retry.
After the restart, try the original action again. If the error returns, note whether the update control is still offered. A persistent prompt indicates that the self-update did not finish; a missing prompt with a working launcher points instead to a different library, account, or game-specific problem.

Fix a required-update notice
When a dialog says an Epic Games Launcher update is required, do not try to bypass it by launching a game directly. Open the launcher’s top-right Settings menu and select RESTART AND UPDATE. On Windows, approve the UAC request. Wait for the launcher to reopen before starting a game.
If the notice returns immediately, repeat the clean exit-and-relaunch sequence, make sure the computer is online, and check whether Windows blocked the installer at the UAC stage. A declined UAC prompt leaves the existing launcher in place, so the required-update message can appear again.
Fix a blank library or unavailable games
A blank library does not necessarily mean that your games have been deleted. Epic says an older launcher can prevent games from being displayed correctly and can block installation or updating. Start with the launcher update:

- Choose UPDATE AND RESTART if available.
- Allow the launcher to restart and complete installation.
- Wait for the library to load again before starting an installation.
If the library remains unavailable, distinguish a launcher-version problem from a service or account problem. The version text at the bottom of the launcher can show what is installed, while Early Preview users can use About > Check now. Do not interpret the absence of a game update as proof that the launcher is current; game availability and launcher currency are different states.

Windows automatic updates: what Epic Games Updater does
On Windows, Epic installs a service called Epic Games Updater. Epic describes it as the component that delivers automatic Epic Games Launcher updates. It is installed during a fresh launcher installation or during a later launcher update.
The service is not continuously active. It runs during the launcher’s self-update process, then stops when that update work is complete. This explains why you may not see it operating all the time in Windows. It also means that disabling or removing the service can interfere with automatic self-updating.
This updater applies only to Windows. Epic says it does not affect other platforms, so a Windows-specific service description should not be used to infer how launcher updates are delivered on macOS or another platform.

Launcher updates versus game updates
Updating the Epic Games Launcher does not guarantee that every installed game is updated. Some games require an additional, native launcher supplied by the game publisher. Epic states that those games cannot be updated or verified from the Epic Games Launcher itself.

When a separate launcher controls the game
If a title uses another launcher, open that native launcher and perform the update or file verification there. Epic gives Ubisoft Connect and Origin as examples of external launchers. The Epic library may still show the game, but the external application owns the game’s patching and verification tasks.
How to identify the boundary
- If Epic updates successfully but the game reports that its files are outdated, open the game’s native launcher.
- If Epic offers no verify or update operation for the title, check whether the game was installed through a publisher launcher.
- If the external launcher reports an error, troubleshoot that launcher separately; repeating the Epic launcher update will not change its files.
Platform and interface differences
The location and wording of the update control can vary with the launcher release and whether you are using the Early Preview interface. In the standard interface, start in the top-right Settings menu. In Early Preview, the direct version check is under the top-left Epic Games logo, then Settings, About, and Check now.
Windows has the documented Epic Games Updater service and may display a UAC prompt. Epic’s support description of that service is Windows-only; it does not establish an identical background updater for macOS or other platforms. On another platform, follow the update control presented by that platform’s installed launcher rather than assuming the Windows service or wording exists.
A complete recovery sequence when updating still fails
Use this order when the launcher will not update, the update button disappears, or an outdated-version message keeps returning:
- Confirm that the computer is online and that you are not intentionally using offline mode.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Relaunch it and wait for the home or library screen to finish loading.
- Open top-right Settings and select RESTART AND UPDATE or UPDATE AND RESTART if shown.
- Approve the Windows UAC prompt when requested.
- After the restart, check the version: Early Preview users should use Settings > About > Check now; other users can read the light-grey version text at the bottom.
- Retry the original operation, such as opening the library or installing a game.
- If only one game fails, determine whether it uses a separate native launcher and move the update or verification task there.
This sequence separates the documented launcher remedies from game-specific troubleshooting. It also creates a useful symptom record: whether the update button appeared, whether UAC was accepted, whether the version check completed, and whether the failure affected the whole library or only one title.
